Message from the President

Dear Friends,

Year 2005 is certainly breezing right on by. I can’t believe we havecompleted the second quarter.. This past quarter was certainly eventful and I must proudly say that the Jaycees contributed much

to our Filipino community both here and back in the Motherland. Our recent Fun-raiser project raised money for the P. BurgosPublic School in Sta. Mesa, Manila. The very next day, the chapter organized Kid’s Day America with Dr. Arnil Neri. We also participated in the Philippine Independence Day by marching and helping the PIDC committee prepare and organize the event. All the while, supporting a US Jaycees initiative to assist Big John’sWalk. Big John is a foundation which helps uninsured cancer  patients. Our members also organized Project Sayaw which wasgreat fun and provided dance instruction to young leaders.

The first half of the year finished, I would like to challenge you tomake the rest of this Philippine-New York Jaycees year one that

stands out in you own Jaycees experience. Is there a project you always dreamed of doing? A cause you’ve always wanted toassist? Is there something you have always wanted share withother mebers? How long will you allow such ideas to brew in you mind? When would be the best time to do it? As leaders, I challenge you to do it now! Just let one of the officers know of your ideas…. about your dream and together, we can make it happen.

I am looking to another eventful second half!

In Jaycees Spirit,Christina Corcuera2005 President Philippine-New York Jaycees

PIDC Parade, A great day…(From Page 1)

The Philippine Independence Day Commemoration, held on June 5, 2005,consisted of a parade and a street fair. Being volunteers for the street fair, Almor and I reported for duty early morning in the command center at 25 th Street andMadison Avenue. We helped vendors find their respective booth and we madesure that the vendors are in the right spot by putting their names on their assigned areas. After helping them find their booths, I panicked when I realizedthat I haven’t reserved the Jaycees spot yet! Fortunately, we found a perfectumbrella and held on to it with our lives!

Under the high noon sun, we came to the assembly area at 38 th Street between

Madison and Park Avenues where we set up our banner and flags. Quickly,Jaycees marchers started coming in and soon enough, the street was madebrighter with the flaming orange shirt!

After hours of waiting and under the scorching heat of the sun, the Jayceesmembers, officers, family and friends, joined by Junior Chamber InternationalDirector of Growth And Development of the Americas, Edmond Sakai, marchedalong Madison Avenue, while cheering “Go Jaycees! Go Jaycees Go!!!,” beamedwith pride and applauded by the adoring crowd!

After the exceptional parade, we all headed to the Jaycees booth where we w joined by NYC Jaycees President Uche Udensi and LI Jaycees President MaDekom. Our simple booth, adorned with the Jaycees Banner, Jaycees shirt,Jaycees Creed, pamphlets and give-away, where visited by several Jayceesalumni, families and friends who showed support by purchasing the orange swhich has truly caught the eye and praises of people in the parade and streeEven though the sun was shining bright, the color of our shirts, our voicescheering altogether and the spirit of Jaycees shone brighter on that momento

day!

When Excitement Stayed and Nerves Ran AwayBy: Elaine Magalona-Dayoan

May 7,2005 was a thrilling day for me. I’ve planned several activities for the dand was hoping to get most of it done. The first stop and the highlight of the dwas my very first meeting/social with the Philippine-New York Jaycees. I wasexcited and nervous about this one; excited because I’ll finally get to meet thmembers of the famous Jaycees, and nervous because I was worried that thmembers might “snub” me , so to speak. Upon meeting the group, “excited” wthe only feeling that stuck; “nervous” pretty much scuttled in a snap! The grouwas absolutely accommodating and very nice! They all made us feel so

welcomed and there was no awkward moment, not to mention the food wasfabulous! (The beef with lemon grass of Tito Serg was a yum!)

The getting to know each other part went by pretty fast and everyone wastreating us like we’ve been in the group for quite a while already. I was asked tosing and so is Almor, my husband who’s also a new member of Jaycees, whohas never sung in any of our family parties. I guess President Christina Corcuerawas just very convincing! Unfortunately, we had to leave early because of a

family dinner but we absolutely had a blast! It made us realize that joining theJaycees was just a great decision we made!
