Préparez-vous, ils arrivent ! Les petits hommes verts seront bientôt de retour ! Mais non il ne s’agit pas d’extra-terrestres, mais des nom-breuses personnes célébrant la Saint Patrick ! C’est tout de suite plus rassurant !
Get ready, they’re back! These little green men will soon be around for only one day ! We’re not talking about aliens from a far away planet, don’t worry !
Un peu d’histoire : au tout début du Vème siècle, Saint Patrick, alors âgé de 16 ans, fut enlevé et envoyé en Irlande en tant qu’esclave. Au cours d’un rêve Dieu lui dit de s’échapper afin de retourner en Grande-Bretagne. Dès son retour, il rejoignit l’Eglise Catholique, devint prêtre et retourna en Irlande, mais cette fois ci pour la christianiser. Le célèbre Trèfle sym-bolisant la Saint Patrick viendrait lui du fait qu’il l’ait utilisé pour illustrer la Trinité. Après presque 30 années en Irlande, il décéda le 17 Mars 461. C’est ce jour qui fut choisi pour honorer sa mémoire.
Saint Patrick’s Day is coming up, and it’s time to take your green outfits out of the closet. Back to history : at the beginning of the 5th century, Saint Patrick, the most commonly recognised patron saint of Ireland, was kidnapped and sent to Ireland as a slave. He was at the time only 16 years old, and in a dream, he was told by God to flee from captivity and return to Brit-
ain. Upon returning, he joined the Catholic Church and became a priest. Later he was called back to Ireland to Christianize the Irish people. This is when he started using the shamrock to explain the Trinity. After about 30 years of evangelism he died on March 17, 461. This day was cho-sen to honour his memory.
À l’origine une fête religieuse, le 17 mars devint vite une célébration de la culture Irlandaise. Célébrée par les Irlandais du monde entier, la Saint Patrick offre de nombreuses festivités. Que ce soit en Irlande, à New York, dans la Caraïbe, et même au Japon, certains se proclament même Irlandais d’un jour ! Défilés, mets et boissons traditionnels, et couleur verte étant de rigueur !. Alors Irlandais de souche ou juste d’un jour, préparez-vous à un moment de fête !
Originally a religious holiday, Saint Patrick’s Day has quickly become a celebration of the Irish culture. Celebrated by Irish people world-wide, it is spent attending church services, and enjoying many other festivities such as Parades, traditional meals and beverages. Whether in Ireland, New York, Caribbean island, or even Japan, some even choose to be Irish for the oc-casion. So, don’t hesitate ! Dress up and join the celebration.
