Alert Raised at Colombia Volcano (December 5, 2011)

Colombia's Galeras volcano is stirring again. Officials raised the volcano's alert level to code "orange" after an increase in earthquake activity at the summit. The increased alert means the volcano _______(1) erupt within weeks or days. The quakes could be a sign that magma is rising again inside the volcano. Similar increases ______(2) detected before previous eruptions between 1992 and 2010.

Galeras lies in the Andes Mountains of southwestern Colombia, 335 miles (540 km) from the nation's capital Bogota and close to the Ecuador border. Scientists consider it one of ________(3) dangerous volcanoes in South America. The volcano woke up from dormancy in 1989 and _________(4) active since then. In 1993, the volcano _________(5) without warning. The explosion killed nine scientists measuring gas levels within the crater. More recent eruptions forced thousands to flee their homes to escape clouds of hot ash.

The denser Nazca plate subducts or dives under the lighter South American plate along the Pacific coast of South America. Crust from the subducting plate melts and forms magma as it slides into the hot upper mantle. Eventually, some of the magma finds________(6) its way back to the surface through the continent's many volcanoes.
