Tall Stories - Designing and Building Mankind’s Tallest Creations Hosted by: Engineers Australia Civil & Structural Panel, Sydney This talk will explore the art and science of mankind’s eternal quest to build tall. It will be given through the eyes of an Australian Engineer Dr Andy Davids who has had the rare privilege of joining that journey around the world over the past 20 years. The hidden forces at work shaping these endeavors and the lessons learned along the way will be shared to give context on current innovations and trends in Engineering the next Generation of ‘Building Tall’. Engineering is a mixture of Art and Science, of Intuition and Rigor in equal measure. The real skill is knowing which to allow to dominate at any time during a collaborative creation process. Super tall mixed use towers need to incorporate a range of crafts which must be explored, weighed and eventually blended to achieve the Business Case. The final product of the collaborative effort must be Tender Packages which have a sequence and content tuned to meet the needs of the Construction Procurement Strategy. This comes from experience in the marketplace, and being playful with serious intent. The guiding principles of Andy’s designs are to consider the design of Super Tall buildings in a holistic way, and to then weave the best construction system into the fabric of the design. His wider team is also undertaking research in material science, construction methods and the effects of atmospheric physics and climate change as required for the design of the next generation of projects over 1000 metres tall being developed for Clients in the Middle East and China. About the Speaker

Dr Andy Davids

Andy has been responsible for many of the Super Tall projects undertaken in the Middle East and around the world. These include the beautiful 355m tall Emirates Towers in Dubai and the 400m tall CMA HQ Tower in Riyadh. He was Director of Design for the 828m Burj Khalifa, which is the current tallest building in the world, and has recently collaborated with the celebrated Designers Santiago Calatrava and Jean Nouvel on the next generation of Super-Tall Buildings in The Middle East and Asia. An Australian Engineer by training and passion he holds a PhD in Engineering and served as an Adjunct Chair in Architecture at the University of Sydney, and serves on several International Code Committees. He received the RW Chapman medal and Engineering Excellence Award from the Institution of Engineers for his work.

Andy has spent the last 20 years living overseas with his family designing and building some of the tallest buildings built by mankind. He and his family have recently returned to Sydney to continue that international journey with some of the most celebrated Architects in the world.
