he roadThe new toilet block built by Barwon Coast in the

ridge car parkThe upgraded Pirate Park. It seems to have

omething for everyone and particularly for the moredventurous primary age children. There are no signsrging caution which is always a bit dispiriting in any

adventure playground'. It is actually adventurous andafe as well. The double flying fox is a particular triumph.he children seem to me very good at taking turns andeing kind to smaller players. I am very glad to have a

hance to say this. The Talking Heads Facebook site

NegativesThe dirty footpaths why don't all traders clean

utside their businessesThe smell of rubbish along Hitchcock Ave why isn't

here a regular rubbish pick up for traders during theusy and hot summer

    - Wide pushers taking up all the footpath space- Cyclists on the footpaths (in particular adults with nochildren); cyclists on the pedestrian path going up to theBluff- People who don't pick up after their dogs- Not being able to walk our dogs on the beaches (onthe Mornington Peninsula we understand dogs areallowed on lead from sunrise until 9:00am and from 7pmon designated beaches)- The people who disobey the signs and walk theirdogs on the beaches- There is no carnival this year (2 comments)- The very ugly Barwon Water pumping station (Iassume that what it is), with its cyclone fence, on the lefthand side as one approaches BH. Where are the trees?- This leads into the poor signage, as one gets closerto BH why can't we do better than this for the entrance toour village- The large Safeway trucks that go over the bridgetowards Geelong, we don't have a Safeway here andthere is no reason for them to go through our little town.

All the other LARGE TRUCKS that go through town.- People who smash glass bottles on the footpaths.- The lack of Myki facilities in Barwon Heads andOcean GroveENOUGH!!! AREN'T WE LUCKY TO LIVE HERE

Other follow up business from 2015

    - The BHA, with the support of the Trader'sAssociation and the Senior Citizens will continue tolobby the CoGG for funds to replace the dangerousuneven footpaths in Hitchcock Rd.In 2005/06 Barwon Heads was promised a newstreetscape from Bridge Rd to Ozone Rd. This grandvision put electricity underground, built new footpaths, planted new trees and a new garden arrangement nearBridge Rd. However, due to funding considerations onlypart of the original project was completed and now adecade later footpaths well over thirty years old havedeteriorated and are presenting a danger to both youngand elderly pedestrians. As business has grown northtowards Ozone Rd so too has foot traffic. We are allentitled to walk on safe well-maintained footpaths and

we will continue to lobby CoGG to address our concernsarising from their unfinished streetscape project.- The BHA Committee has made a preliminarysubmission to the Victorian Electoral Commissionreview of City of Greater Geelong council structure.

We look forward to the preliminary report, which wethunderstand will be released on the 20 January, and toparticipating further in the discussion on the evolution ofa new structure for the City of Greater Geelong. Weanticipate that a new structure for representation willprovide the basis for fair and equal representation andalso enable a funding structure that ensures thatratepayers' money is equally distributed. We encourageall CoGG ratepayers to inform themselves and getinvolved.- What's happening with the Pedestrian Safetyproject? The BHA Committee is pleased with the finalplans of this project and commends the SteeringCommittee for its work throughout the various stages ofthe project's development. We expect construction to

commence in March. To review photo montages of theproposed works see the BHA websi te atwww.barwonheadsassociation.com- Traffic Management in Flinders Pde and OzoneRd. The BHA website has a more detailed report fromCoGG for your further information.- The newly formed Bellarine Community SafetyGroup. BHA is representing the Barwon Headscommunity on this newly formed group, with othercommunity associations from Portarlington, PointLonsdale, Queenscliff, St Leonards, Indented Heads,Ocean Grove and Drysdale. It is chaired by The HonLisa Neville our state MP and Tess Walsh AssistantCommissioner, Western Region Victoria Police. We willreport after the next meeting. We will see you at our first meeting for 2016 on the 15thFebruary. 7:00pm at the Senior Citizens Centre. close the doors if the heat becomes unbearable, sincefew customers come then. The eagerness with whichmany of those who were on holidays had swooped onour cheap, good quality clothes, books, pictures andornaments, was just wonderful. Many are holidaypeople who we are delighted to see again at this time ofthe year. Those who camp over the water happily walk over, andothers are grateful that provided they can get in, there isusually a place to park behind our shop. We do stressthat this parking is for church and Op Shop, (or JigsawLibrary customers) only, as we know that during the

week, others visiting nearby use the area as a privateparking space. I have once or twice left carefully wordednotes under wind-screen wipers reminding people thatthis is really NOT public parking. In a similar fashion, although we are always willing toshow customers where our toilet facilities are, we dostress that these are for volunteers and customers use,NOT for the general public.Of course the toilet is locked when church and Op Shopare not in operation, and there is a notice remindingpeople of the public toilets over the road, but sometimesthat message is not heeded.

So now, it will gradually become quieter with Easteralready in our sights. There is still such an incredible

amount of stuff being donated, and we are alwaysgrateful.Sometimes, the markings anything in this pile for 50c.,

alerts us to the fact that we have the left-overs from aGarage Sale. Most of this is quite sale-able, but I cannot reiterate toooften that we cannot accept electrical goods of any kind,or cots, strollers, or bike helmets. The Diocese of Melbourne will not allow any Anglican OpShop to on-sell these goods for safety reasons. After thetragic death of a child who was placed in a cot boughtfrom an Op Shop, it was recognised that the above-mentioned items are not always safe, and we cant takeany risks.

Meanwhile, I cannot credit the number of pictures whichhave been donated recently. Certainly, we have hadmany house-sales in Barwon Heads, and perhapspeople know that the home to which they will move willnot suit, or accommodate the pictures they haveenjoyed. It is sad when I am putting very minimal prices onpictures, because we are just inundated with them, torealise that some would have cost fifty times more whennew.Conversely, since I rarely get time to visit $2 shops, thereare some things I have priced at a far greater amountthan they should be. As I say to customers, The joy offossicking in an Op Shop is that YOU find the bargains. We look forward to seeing you all soon, and God bless

    you.Helen Edwards

    Busy, Busy, Busy!

Of course, we all know that summerholidays in Barwon Heads are verybusy times, but this year!

was sitting on the beach on one of my few days off as Iwatched two grandchildren playing the shallows of theiver. I could scarcely believe that in the two hours we

were there, the procession of cars crawling across thebridge just did not stop. So it was hardly surprising thatwe have been even busier this January than in previousyears.Thank God we have had plenty of volunteers, and thathe new air-conditioner in the Sorting Room meant that

our hard workers and customers were able to keepgoing even on those really awful days. On these kinds ofdays, for once, the customers come early, then we DO

    Dear Editor,

On January 27, driving from Geelong

at the peak of the once in a lifetime

    downpour, an unknown woman

probably saved my life on the Barwon

Heads road. My car aquaplaned but I

could not see the verge to get off the

road, and had to stop. A car came

around beside me, the driver asked if I

wanted to follow, guided me to the

    town with her tail-lights and

continued past the Village Park where

    I lost her.

I went home safely. I will always

    remember what she did.

If you read this, I would love to meet

you and thank you for this act of grace

Nippers 2016The 2016 Nippers Summer Intensive Program was a great success with around150 Nippers graduating after the final carnival day held in perfect conditions.

An unprecedented number of Nipper parents will obtain their Bronze Medallion before next season and wehave had a great response to the reintroduction of competition for our Nippers, with a large team competing atOcean Grove on 13 February.

The 2016/2017 season will see further changes with to the Program with a full competition program for ourNippers team, a revised Summer Intensive Program format and a range of other events planned. Our Nippers also now have an expanded and highly successful senior summer competition team at the Club tolook up to and who will be helping out with training and developing our Nippers team.

We have many people to thank for helping to make Nippers a success this summer: Benno's Meating Place,Barwon Heads IGA, our Nipper leaders and water safety team, the parents who help out, our hardworking

Committee members and, of course, our wonderful 2016 Nippers. It's a great time to be part of your town's Nippers Program and we would love to hear from families who wouldlike to know more at [email protected] or on 0419 396 903.

Adult Bronze CampWe are holding a residential Bronze Medallion camp for adults at the Club onFriday 26 February (from 7 pm), Saturday 27 February, Sunday 28 February,Saturday 5 March and Sunday 6 March (to finish by lunchtime).

We will complete the Camp while the weather and water is still warm and the Camp, which represents theminimum number of hours that we can run a Bronze program over, means that it is completed quickly.

Obtaining your Bronze is an achievement in itself and a lot of fun, especially in a camp format, but it also sets agreat example for our kids. If you obtain your Bronze it will be more likely that your kids will get their Bronze andexperience all of the benefits that being part of the surf lifesaving movement brings.

Our rock pool holds 10 years of secrets andmemories. And as each passing seasontakes with it another moment of time, wehave embraced different shades of theoceans rocky walls. Our secret rock poolhas been a place to simply float. Or a placeto dive for treasure. More recently, a place towear a snorkel to look and see. Lastsummer, we shared the excitement ofspotting our first small fish and watching ourfirst hermit crab. An amazing world under the

surface began to open in my small oneshearts and minds.

This summer, we again took ourselves down

to our secret hidden heaven. Where 3wetsuit-clad small ones, complete withsnorkelled faces and zinced noses, bombedinto the welcoming waters of our rock pool. But as I said, my 3 smalls are now not sosmall. Whereas the contours of our secretrock bath have kinda stayed the same.Meaning:

    We just didnt fit.

So, we have a secret rock pool up along on13th beach.

Being about 4 metres wide and around a

metre deep, its not so much of a rock pool, but more like a rock bath. As the summershave quietly passed over this little pool, my3 love-babes have grown into my 3 school-aged loves. Not only have they jumped, splashed and swam in this secret piece ofheaven, they have all had their bumschanged, been breast fed, and then sleptalongside its rocky shore. Serenaded onlyby the summer sun dancing over theoaming waves, feeling nothing but thestroke of the wind across their soft, babyhair.

    Photo:www.carswellcottages.com

There were complaints that there was noroom to stretch out and to float. Not deepenough to dive to the bottom. And there wasnothing to do and nothing to be seen belowthe surface on the rock pools floor. When all I could see, were 3 childhoodspassing too fast.Taking away the wonder of secrets andinnocence with them.

Think restorative, yin forward folds andsavasana.

To truly appreciate a real moment, we haveto understand that the moment itself isfleeting. And at this time of year, some of ushave had the luxury of moving to a rhythmrather than a clock. Allowing for ourselves tospend a little more time actually inside ourmoments. From here, we can reflect on howour moments are shifting and changing. Andif we are lucky enough to receive - we cantouch the moments between our moments.Experiencing a freshness in our lives and anopenness in our heart. As well as anintimacy and connection within ourselves.

As we drift into the last month of summer, wecan see once again the receding of the sunslight. We can feel again the cooling of theearths hand. We can hear the calling of theAutumns swell across our shores. Theseamless beauty of the natural world and hercycles can hold us in her moments. Somewill make you long for the past and yourbabes. Some will make you long for yourfuture and your dreams. And some will holdyou silent. They will make you pay attention. And let you rest in her stillness for thisexquisite moment in time.

My smalls and their loss of their secret rockbath was short-lived. After a time, theyrealised the tide was returning. They sat onthe edge of their piece of natural heaven -linking arms and crossing legs - and createda new game called The Tide Slide. With a squeal of delight, the ocean picked uptheir neoprened bums and plopped them intheir secret rock bath pool.Opening a moment of childhood magicagain. Most cases of bad breath can beremedied by efficiently brushing the teeth. However, some types of bad breath are chronic orrecurring, which may warrant a visit to the dentist.

Do I need treatment for my badbreath? If your bad breath does not improve despite self-care techniques, such as dietary adjustments andthorough tooth brushing, you may need to see adentist about pursuing professional treatment.Keep in mind that short-term remedies like gum, breath mints and mouthwash may temporarilyfreshen breath, but they are not a solution to theunderlying problem.

What should I expect my dentist to doabout my bad breath?Your visit will begin with an examination and

questions about your daily habits, such as thetypes of foods you eat and the medications youtake. Your dentist may then inspect your mouth forsigns of decay, infections or gum disease thatcould be causing your bad breath.

Is there anything I can do to maintain betterbreath?Make sure you stay hydrated to keep your saliva

flowing because this helps wash away any food

debris on your teeth. Sleep with your mouthclosed, as this prevents dry mouth and helpstame morning breath. Finally, be sure to visityour dentist for professional cleanings at leasttwice per year to remove built-up plaque thatcan cause chronic halitosis.

At Ocean Breeze Dental on The Terrace. We

offer all types of general dentistry including

cleaning, fillings and check ups. We also offer

orthodontics, implants, crown and bridge work

as well dentures. You can now make an

appointment online at your convenience on

    oceanbreezedental.com.au.

STAGE 2 OF THE COMMUNITY PLAN FOR A SUSTAINABLE BARWON HEADSLast year the Barwon Heads Sustainability Group began consulting the community as part of the

review of the first version of the Community Plan for a Sustainable Barwon Heads. Some of you mayremember the 'Great Ideas for Barwon Heads' facilitated conversations in the new John Green's

Living Room' space as part of the 2015 Festival of the Sea. We also invited local community groups to

participate in this review. We have now summarised and analysed all the responses from this

community consultation, and have completed a draft of the Stage 2 version of the Community Plan fora Sustainable Barwon Heads. This review of the Community Plan has been made possible through

funding support from the Barwon Heads Community Bank.

Here are a few details about the Stage 2 Plan:

    1. The Stage 2 Plan will show: Thematic summaries of the 'Great Ideas' for Barwon Heads

Thematic summaries 'Projects' occurring in Barwon Heads ?

Links between 'Great Ideas' and 'Projects' ?

Gaps in 'Projects' (i.e. 'Great Ideas' that are not currently being undertaken by any group(s) in Barwon Heads)

    2. 'Great Ideas' & 'Projects' have been categorised into seven colour-coded themes:

Blue Brown Grey Green Orange Red Black

    3. Once the Stage 2 edition of the Community Plan is finalised, it will be available on the Barwon Heads Sustainability Group

website www.bhsustainability.org.au - as well as in hard copy format around the town.

rdWe will be informally discussing the draft version of the Stage 2 Plan at Beach House at 7.30pm on Wednesday 3 February.

    All welcome. Ant Manglesdorf

    COMMUNITY ARTS GARDEN

    __________________________________________________________________________________

    BARWON HEADS SUSTAINABILITY GROUP

So whats been happening down at the gardensthis month?Well weve picked quite a substantial amount of fruit off the apricot tree andare just waiting for the nectarines and plums to fully ripen. In terms ofvegetables, tomatoes and zucchinis seem to be growing the best in the drierconditions, and one or two well-watered rouge tomatoes have almost taken

over the poly tunnel. It is getting to the point where a machete may berequired if you want to get from one end of the tunnel to the other.Outside where things are much drier a couple of plot holders haveimplemented agri-pipe and or bottle watering systems that are designed toget the water right down to the roots of the plants and it does seem to beshowing reasonable results. I think this technique coupled with using lots oforganic material in your bed, ensuring an ample covering of mulch and

designing in a bit of wind protection is definitely the way to go for a water efficient garden. In other news, our newly appointed president John M has brought us into the 21st century by launching a Barwon Heads Arts Garden Instagram page, towhich Costa from Gardening Australia has given his immediate approval. Our user name is barwonheadsgarden for anyone who wants to @ or hashtag the group.

And lastly I am sorry to let you all down but I am not sure where all the vegetable puns are, lettuce hope they turnip.Beets me where theyve bean. I am yam pretty annoyed actually because I just dont have the thyme to play hide and leek. Hopefully I find them under thethree peas couch, but there isnt mushroom under there. I mean olive puns but I feel like a dill because these are medi-okra at best.

    Happy Gardening,

    Rob Armstrong

The performance ofCarmenat the Barwon Headsrd

Community Hall on Saturday the 23 of January went off

    with a bang.

The wonderful cast from Emotion workshad our audience of 185 people

mesmerized for two hours with an edgy interpretation of Bizet's Carmen; a 'cut'

opera incorporating various music and dance styles and plenty of dark humor. There was no holding

back from this St Kilda based company, evidence that a Barwon Heads audience is open to any thing.Which is good news for us at the BHAC as we look forward to presenting more surprises in the future.

In February and March 2016, community consultation will take place to determine the demand for a Community Arts Hub. Barwon Heads is an arts town

but it is one without a dedicated arts facility and this COGG funded feasibility study will allow the community to articulate their views so please let us know

what you think. You can register for the community consultation by visiting our website at barwonheadsartscouncil.com.au.

For further inquiries on the feasibility study contact Victoria Strachan on 0427 032 933.

Once again we are pleased to be a community partner for M~M2016, 24 hr Extreme Arts Walk, to be held on 7 & 8th May 2016. We congratulate Fiona

Duncan on her role as District Coordinator for Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads. In 2014, 2000 people enjoyed a memorable closing ceremony on the

Barwon Heads foreshore and we look forward to doing it again in 2016.

In other news planning continues towards the Bellarine Arts TrailWeekendto be held in Spring 2016 where Artist studios in Barwon Heads and

Ocean Grove will be open to the public. We're still calling for expressions of interest from local artists. Please call Karen Shirley 0437 032 647 or email

us at [email protected] to register your interest. This event has been made possible through a City of Greater Geelong Community Arts

Know your fire planFebruary 2016It has been a hot and firey start to the summer season. Withblazes in WA and in our own backyard of Wye River, it has beena testing time for the emergency services.

On Christmas Day a crew of volunteer fire fighters from theBarwon Heads Fire Brigade left their families and Christmasfeasts to go to Wye River to help defend against the inferno thathad descended on the town. The crew of four joined other localbrigades in a strike team to be initial responders to support theWye River crew. They fought the fire all that long late afternoonand through the night, until relief crews arrived the nextmorning.

In the words of our Captain, Helen Wood, it was an intenseexperience that tested the skills of the volunteers but showedtime and again what a well-trained team we have in our Brigademembers.

Team work was critical and the commitment to do what wecould, safely, with our fellow strike team crews to defend theproperties at Wye River meant we collectively helped save 25to 30 houses, she said.

I am incredibly proud of all the volunteers in our Brigade whogave their time whether it was directly fighting the fire, undertaking blacking-out activities, or driving our forwardcommand vehicle to assist with ground observation dutieseveryone gave their all.

A particular mention should also be made of the families andfriends of these brigade members for their support in letting

their loved ones go to Wye River.

The experience of Wye River and recent fires in more urbanareas such as Crib Point on the Mornington Peninsula is a

mely reminder that we must all have a fire plan.

Grass fires can start anywhere; it's important to know whether you will leave early, or stay and defend, well in advance so you just have to put your plan intoction if the situation ever arises, said Helen.

ownload the FireReady app to your smart phone. This app provides the latest fire information and warnings. Set the app to notify you of incidents occurringa chosen area and use it to stay up to date with local Fire Danger Ratings and Total Fire Bans.

    WHAT'S COOKING AT

    THE LOBSTER POT?

For those readers who are visiting or new tothe area, the Hooded Plover is a small, timid, endangered beach-nesting birdwhich is endemic to our local beaches.Hooded Plovers are the masters of camouflage and arewell-adapted to life on the beach that is, life on thebeaches of 100 years ago.Their once tranquil beach habitat has now beenoverwhelmed by people visiting the beach for recreation, bringing all sorts of things that the birds are unfamiliarwith dogs, horses, 4WDs, beach balls, toddlers!Hoodies now struggle to find a bit of undisturbed space onthe beach to breed and because their nesting failure rateis as high as 90-95%, their numbers are declining, as toofew young are added to the population to sustain it.Birdlife Australia and hundreds of coastal volunteers areturning this dire situation around; by monitoring hoodiesand detecting when they have eggs or chicks and puttingprotective management in place to relieve many of thehuman pressures.Hooded Plovers lay their eggs directly on the sand in asimple, shallow nest scrape. The nest can be anywhereabove the high-tide mark, on the beach or in the dunes.Hooded Plovers eggs are small (about the size of a 20-

cent piece) and very well camouflaged; so wellcamouflaged that they are easily trodden on by accident.

Egg incubation takes 28 days and if completedsuccessfully, the tiny fluffball chicks hatch out withsurprisingly powerful legs. Adult hoodies don't feed theiryoung; the chicks must fend for themselves, feeding onthe sandhoppers found in decomposing seaweed. Withsufficient undisturbed feeding time, growth is rapid and in

just five weeks they can fly.During those five weeks before flight, however, they areat their most vulnerable and face many threats.

Aside from the ever present avian predators: magpies, ravens, gulls, kestrels and other raptors, these chicks arehighly sensitive to disturbance from off-lead dogs.

When an off-lead dog is present, chicks will go into hidingwhich means they can't feed and may die of starvation ordehydration if they are disturbed for a long period of timeor frequently disturbed throughout the day. When thechick's parents are preoccupied with fending off ordistracting off-lead dogs the chicks are then vulnerable toavian attack.

An unleashed dog is more likely to explore and to moveunpredictably from the water to the upper beach, or eveninto the dunes, where they are likely to encounter theeggs or hiding chicks, and to accidentally step on andcrush them.Believe it or not, the birds can tell the difference between

a dog on or off the lead.Hooded plovers have been observed to be less reactiveto leashed dogs; a dog on the lead is very close to itsowner and moves at the same speed, in a predictablepath.

As a consequence disturbance is of a shorter durationand less likely to be lethal. Cont. Page 21

Success for the hoodies depends on everyone. Please,if you are visiting any beach where hoodies arebreeding, respect the signs at the breeding areas.Walk your dog elsewhere, but if that's not possible, keepthem on a leash at all times and walk at the waters edge.Never walk at high tide as the nests are on the sand justabove the high-water mark.

I am overjoyed to let you all know that our Christmaswish came early with the successful fledging of theHooded Plover chick at 42W!!This is the first hooded plover fledgling along this stretchof coast since January 2007, quite an achievement forthe Barwon Coast team! The parents, PC & EH have started breeding again with

their next nest due to hatch soon.Midway between 36W and 40W, NK & XU are the proudparents of a single chick which hatched on 19/1/16.This chick cannot fly until the 23/2/16, so pleaseobserve the signs, give them space, leash your dog, walk by the waters edge and avoid the breeding area athigh tide.

CR & SN's nest failed early in January and are yet tohave another attempt. At Point Lonsdale, HY & unb have 2 chicks whichhatched on the morning of the Rip to River run and PL &ET have a 2 egg nest are due to hatch any day now.

Australia Day. The final stage involves the construction ofthe concrete promenade and installation of a newhandrail. It is expected that sections of the promenadewill be closed for most of February and visitors to the siteare asked to follow the detour signage where necessary.SUMMER SHUTTLE BUSThe shuttle bus has been another huge success this year

with thousands of people making use of the service. Onbehalf of our community a very big thank you to our Goldsponsors this year, Barwon Heads Community Bankand the City of Greater Geelong.

th thThe free bus operated from 27 December until 26January travelling around Ocean Grove and BarwonHeads and the beaches starting at the Ocean Grove PostOffice. The Shuttle Bus towed a trailer to carry beachgear including surf boards.DOG ON BEACHESBarwon Coast works closely with the City of GreaterGeelong and this year COGG has purchased a specialvehicle to improve patrols on public land. For the last few years an educative approach has been

taken toward dogs on beaches and other public land.We ask that all dog owners practice responsibleownership by keeping their pets under control, picking upafter them and abiding by the signage onsite. This year Penalty Infringements Notices will beimposed where necessary.PLAY IT SAFE BY THE WATERSwim between the flags at our locally patrolled beaches -

thOcean Grove Main, Ocean Grove Spit 18W and 13Beach Main where Life Savers & Lifeguards will be onpatrol 7 days a week, for the peak holiday covering weekfrom Boxing Day to Australia Day.

At all beach access pathways we have installed BeachSafety Signs that provide advice on general water

conditions, rocks, tide etc. and where the nearestpatrolled beach is. Please take time to read thosenotices.

Always be alert on the beach when with children andnever swim alone. No diving / jumping from jetty, promenade or bridgeTragically serious incidents have occurred in recentsummers so it is really important to take personalresponsibility for your safety when near the water, be it at

the ocean or the river beaches.Dangerous activities such as jumping or diving off theBarwon Heads jetty, the promenade or the bridge canlead to serious injury especially back injuries or evendeath. This year we have seen massive movement of sandsalong the beaches and at low river flows the water depthcan be minimal, especially at low tide near the Jetty, sodon't do it!OUR ENVIRONMENTBlue-ringed Octopus are small timid creatures preferringto hide in rock pools, seagrass and seaweed. This highlyvenomous animal can be seen in our rock pools. Whencalm and happy it will remain a sandy colour, but whenangry it will change to yellowish with bright blue rings allover its body. This is a warning sign to leave alone andmove away. This animal produces deadly tetrodotoxinand there is no antivenom. They are not animals to beafraid of, they live along our coast all year round. Weneed to respect the rock pools, watch where you put yourhands, be alert, and don't interfere with them. Please donot interact with these animals. They too have a job to doin our marine environment.Copperhead snakes, in particular the juveniles are onthe move throughout our coastal reserves. These shysnakes prefer to move away, but if interfered with has thepotential to bite. The coastal dunes are habitat for theseanimals and we ask all using the beach; no people ordogs in the dunes. Access the beach using the

formalised access ways to protect yourselves, our dunesand the animals that live there.Barwon Coast in partnership with Bellarine Bayside andother key agencies and volunteers attended thePortarlington Mussel Festival to engage visitors andlocals to the area on responsible fishing and boating, local wildlife and responsible pet ownership. Barwon Heads Andrew Humphris is not ashamed to callhimself a Mamil (middle aged man in lycra). After taking upcycling in 2008 as a way to keep fit after his footy playing days,he has taken his passion for cycling over to France and nowintroduces fellow cyclists to the experience of riding thefamous roads of the Tour de France in the French Pyrenees.Bike France started from the culmination of experiences Ive had from many previous cycling tripsto France and Europe. I knew after my first trip to Europe with my bike that I would go back - I justfell in love with riding over there! Despite being a big guy who is definitely not built for riding up big

mountains, there is something really special about testing yourself on the roads made famous inthe Tour de France. There is a real feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction you get whenmaking it to the summit after riding up a big hill for the best part of two hours. The quiet roads, picture postcard scenery and the names of past champions etched on the road are helpfuldistractions when it starts to hurt. One thing that became clear to me on past trips is that due to thedistance, travel time and costs, it is often difficult for many Aussie cyclists to experience riding inFrance. With that, I took all the good things I learned from previous cycling tours and decided tostart my own cycling tour business. My aim was to let people come away and ride the famousroads of the Tour de France on a fully supported tour, whilst staying in a beautiful location. Whatsdifferent about Bike France Cycling Tours? Our tours cater for both the pure mountain goat looking to take on multiple Hors Catgorie climbsin the one day, right though to those on their first trip wanting to test themselves against some ofthe famous climbs of the Tour De France. We have a maximum group size of 10, so no big groups. This ensures that everyone gets welllooked after and gets personal service. Our main point of difference from other tours is that we stay

in the same accommodation for the entire time based in the heart of the Midi Pyrenees. All therides start and finish at the front door so there is no checking in and out of hotels and packing bagseveryday. This way everyone gets the chance to relax, eat, sleep and focus on riding the famousPyrenees. Our tours run for 7-9 nights, which means that you can fly out Australia on a Thursday, spend a night in Paris either side of the tour, and be back in Australia on the following Monday.(This makes a little bit easier to get the leave pass from the beloved!) Some of our guests alsoarrange to meet their non-cycling partners afterwards in Paris or London or even San Sebastian in Spain, which is only three hours drive from our base. Where we stayOne of the things guests talk about most is our fabulous location and accommodation. Our base is a true cycling haven with 180-degree views of the Pyrenees looking towardsSpain. The accommodation is a fully renovated 17th century Chteau that has 6 separate twin share or king bedrooms each with their own private bathroom. We have our ownguest lounge, kitchen, secure bike shed and a heated horizon pool that also looks out to the Col du Tourmalet perfect for a post ride recovery with a cold beer! Our Englishspeaking hosts cater for just about every need for cycling groups. Their home cooked, french inspired three course dinners are often rated by guests as the highlight of the trip afterthe riding! Liz is famous for her regional dish Parmentier de Canard Confit (or Duck Shepards Pie), with many of our hungry cyclists always asking for a second serve!Apart from all the major climbs being a just a short warm up ride from our front door, there are plenty of other things to see and do including visiting the many thermal spas in thearea, browsing the local village markets, hiking, visiting the famous town of Lourdes or perhaps just lazing by the horizon pool overlooking the Pyrenees. This also makes it

appealing for the non-cycling partners who come along.Pyrenees Challenge 2016 This year we are running a 9 night trip in conjunction with Paul Beretta from Berettas Bike Studio in Geelong. Paul is a very experienced and talentedcyclist and will be on hand to help with any mechanical issues that guests may have. He will also be leading the more experienced cyclists of the group up the big climbs, whilst I willbe at the back end with those who prefer to take it a bit easier! This year we take on all the major climbs in the Pyrenees including the Col du Tourmalet and the HourquettedAncizan which will feature in the 2016 Tour de France. The good thing about this trip in June is that guests will be able to ride the these climbs, then boast to their friends a monthlater when watching the pros ride the same roads at the Tour de France on TV.Although our trips are open to cyclists of all abilities, we recommend that guests do have some level of climbing experience and cycling fitness. The fitter you are the moreenjoyable the riding will be. We do have car support on most days just in case it gets a bit hard, and there is no pressure to ride outside your comfort zone. This year, we pack 7 daysof cycling and ride anything from 70-120km a day with between 1,000m and 3,000m of climbing depending on how hard you want to go. We normally get back from our rides in theearly afternoon so that leaves plenty of time to recover and relax at our horizon pool or visit some of the many attractions in the area. We have a few places remaining on
