Part 1 - Talk That Builds Health by Wallace D.Wattles

There is a constructive, or integrating principle in nature, and a destructive, or disintegrating principle - powerapplied through the constructive principle builds, formsand integrates; it draws atoms and forms together - powerapplied through the destructive principle dissolves anddisintegrates; it disperses atoms and forms, and throwsthem apart - to learn how to make every thought andaction constructive, is to master the secret of allattainment.

Never talk about your sicknesses, or mention your "symptoms." If youhad a sleepless night, what earthly good can you do by telling about it?How will the world be made better or more joyous by knowing that youheard the clock strike every time, until four in the morning? You canonly throw a damper on the spirits of others by giving them detailedinformation as to how many times you turned over or sat up in bed; howyour back ached, or your feet cramped until you almost "hollered" andso on. It does not make you any better to advertise your miseries, and itdoes make other people worse. One of the first things to be done instarting to live constructively is to give up the habit of seeking forsympathy.

The sympathy habit, once formed, is hard to break. The desire to tell ourtroubles and receive commiseration grows almost irresistible if weindulge it; and yet the practice produces only evil results. To tell of a"bad" symptom conveys a suggestion to the subconscious mind whichtends to fix the symptom more firmly upon us, and make it permanent;and it also tends to produce the same symptom in those who listen to us.And there can be no reason for telling our troubles except that we desireto be pitied; and no one who desires pity is in a constructive frame ofmind. In the constructive frame of mind, we are advancing; goingforward mentally; and when we are conscious of advancement we do notwish to be pitied. You cannot hold the desire for sympathy and at the

same time hold the thought that you are getting better and growingstronger. The moment you give way to the desire for pity, you begin tosuggest to yourself that you are going down hill; and you will begin togo down hill.

Hide your symptoms. If you have a cough, do not take pains to displayit, so that everybody shall see how miserable you are; and if you have apain, do not put your hand on the place and say, "Ouch!" Keep still; keepit to yourself; forget it. When you forget it, it will be gone. Ignore allsymptoms of ill health, and enlarge upon all symptoms of good health. When you have had a sleepless night, mention that you are lookingforward to a "bully" rest on the following night; say nothing about thenight that is past. When you have a pain in your stomach, tell how goodyour head feels; and so on. Do not tell the trouble; forget it.

Do not listen to other people when they talk of sickness. Change thesubject if you can; if you cannot, fall back on some affirmation like,"There is one mind, and I am that mind. That mind knows no disease; Iam that mind, and I am health." Keep this up, mentally, while the dolefulone is complaining, and get away as quickly as you can. Do not pity aninvalid; to do so is to give him the worst of suggestions. What you wantto do is to give him the suggestion that he does not need pity; and howcan you do that, if you keep right on pitying him? Of course he willthink you unsympathetic; but that is exactly what you want to be. It is novirtue to sympathize with sickness; it is a vice. You cannot help the sickby sympathizing with their sickness; you will only make them moreuncomfortable and add to their miseries by doing so. Sympathy withsickness fixes the attention upon sickness, and so tends to make more ofit.

When you see a person suffering, sympathize, not with the pain that is inhim, but with the health that is in him. Work with the health not with thedisease. Get out of the habit of seeking for pity yourself, and get out ofthe equally reprehensible habit of pitying other people. It may be good toweep with those that weep, under some circumstances; but I have mydoubts about it. I know, however, that it is good to laugh with those thatlaugh; and if you can get the weepers to laugh with you, that is far betterthan weeping with them. Bear in mind that when you weep with those

who weep, you make two weeps grow where there was only one before;and how does that help the world?

So never talk about sickness; never mention your symptoms; and neverlisten to those who do. When they will tell you about it, and you arewhere you cannot get away, fall back on the mental affirmation of healthand wholeness. Now and then you will be caught in an afternoon partyof people whose whole conversation is of disease, death, deformity, oldage, funerals and similar subjects; and when that happens, get out. Donot stay, under the mistaken idea that courtesy requires it. Courtesy doesnot require you to sacrifice life, health, hope and happiness in order tolisten to a few croakers. Do not criticise or find fault with them; merelytell them you are going to look up some people who talk about health, youth, joy and happiness; and go your way. Never, never, talk aboutsickness; forget it.

Part 2 - Talk That Builds Health by Wallace D.Wattles and Tony Mase

Written in the very early nineteen hundreds, "Talk That Builds Health",like each of the articles in Wallace D. Wattles' "Lessons in ConstructiveScience" series,* began with this statement:

"There is a constructive, or integrating principle in nature, and adestructive, or disintegrating principle - power applied through theconstructive principle builds, forms and integrates; it draws atomsand forms together - power applied through the destructiveprinciple dissolves and disintegrates; it disperses atoms and forms, and throws them apart - to learn how to make every thought andaction constructive, is to master the secret of all attainment."

The key phrase in this statement is:

"… to learn how to make every thought and action constructive, is tomaster the secret of all attainment."

You see…

Every thought you think is either:

1. Constructive, or it's…

2. Destructive.

It either:

1. Builds, or it…

2. Destroys.

* "Talk That Builds Health" was the third of fifteen articles in Wallace D. Wattles'"Lessons in Constructive Science" series.! Click Here for More Information

Every action you take is either:

1. Constructive, or it's…

2. Destructive.

It either:

1. Builds, or it…

2. Destroys.

Every word that comes out of your mouth is either:

1. Constructive, or it's…

2. Destructive.

It either:

1. Builds, or it…

2. Destroys.

Therefore…

If you want to "build" health…

"Never talk about your sicknesses, or mention your 'symptoms.'"

Think about it…

"If you had a sleepless night, what earthly good can you do bytelling about it? If you're sick…

Absolutely not!

If you're sick…

Will talking about being sick do anything whatsoever to make otherswell?

Of course it won't!

Remember…

Every word that comes out of your mouth is either:

Yours and/or others…

Guess what they're doing?

That's right…

They're "destroying" it!

It's that simple. ☺

"One of the first things to be done in starting to live constructively isto give up the habit of seeking for sympathy."

The Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary defines sympathy as:*

"… the feeling of being sorry for somebody; showing that youunderstand and care about somebody's problems…"

Thus…

"… the habit of seeking for sympathy"…

Is simply…

The habit of looking for somebody to feel sorry for you…

To understand and care about your problems.

"The sympathy habit, once formed, is hard to break. The desire totell our troubles and receive commiseration grows almost irresistibleif we indulge it; and yet the practice produces only evil results."

What are these "evil" results?

There are two of them…

"To tell of a 'bad' symptom conveys a suggestion to the subconsciousmind which tends to fix the symptom more firmly upon us, andmake it permanent…"

Did you ever notice sick people always talk about being sick?

Do you think there's any correlation between their being sick and theiralways talking about being sick?

Of course there is…

Every single time they talk about being sick, they "tell" theirsubconscious mind that they're sick…

And…

Because the subconscious mind believes whatever you tell it…

That's what they subconsciously "believe" they are…

Therefore…

That's what they "are"…

Sick.

"… as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee," said Jesus.

"… and…"

"… it also tends to produce the same symptom in those who listen tous."

Did you ever notice you can be feeling perfectly fine and then someonewill come along and start talking about being sick and, all of a sudden, you don't feel so well yourself?

Do you think there's any correlation between the two?

Page 14: Talk That Builds Health: A Lesson in Constructive Scienceicreateharmony.com/TalkThatBuildsHealth.pdf · together with Wallace D. Wattles' The Science of Being Well, ... The Science

No doubt about it.

Wallace D. Wattles continues…

"And there can be no reason for telling our troubles except that wedesire to be pitied; and no one who desires pity is in a constructiveframe of mind. In the constructive frame of mind, we are advancing;going forward mentally; and when we are conscious of advancementwe do not wish to be pitied. You cannot hold the desire for sympathyand at the same time hold the thought that you are getting betterand growing stronger. The moment you give way to the desire forpity, you begin to suggest to yourself that you are going down hill;and you will begin to go down hill."

The Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary defines pity as:*

"… a feeling of sympathy and sadness caused by the suffering andtroubles of others…"

Now…

Think about it…

If you're in a "constructive" state of mind…

If you "believe" you're getting better and growing stronger…

Why would you possibly want anyone to feel sympathy and sadness foryou?

The answer is…

You wouldn't.

So… * The Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary is one of two online dictionaries I useextensively in my study of Wallace D. Wattles' writings.! http://www.oup.com/elt/catalogue/teachersites/oald7/?cc=global

After some eight years of studying his writings, I'm pretty muchconvinced "forget it" was Wallace D. Wattles' favorite phrase.

Throughout his writings, it's his answer to practically everything that"ails" you.

Since I began studying Wallace D. Wattles writings and applying hisphilosophy to my life, it's absolutely incredible how much "stuff" in mylife cleaned itself up or disappeared completely simply because I "forgotit" and directed my attention elsewhere.

In his book, The Science of Getting Rich,* Wallace D. Wattles writes:

"The Creative Power within us makes us into the image of that to whichwe give our attention."

If you give your attention to health…

That's what you'll have…

Health.

If you give your attention to sickness…

That's what you'll have…

Sickness.

"The Creative Power within us makes us into the image of that to whichwe give our attention."

This is the way the Universe works!

Now…

Just because you've decided to ignore sickness and focus on health thatdoesn't mean the rest of the world is going to fall in line and cooperatewith you, does it?

Trust me on this one…

It's not going to happen…

At least anytime soon. ☺

As a matter of fact…

As soon as you decide to ignore sickness and focus on health…

You'll become aware of just how much "destructive" suggestion there isgoing on around you.

What should you do about it?

Simple…

"Do not listen to other people when they talk of sickness. Change thesubject if you can; if you cannot, fall back on some affirmation like,'There is one mind, and I am that mind. That mind knows nodisease; I am that mind, and I am health.' Keep this up, mentally,

while the doleful one is complaining, and get away as quickly as youcan."

If you want to "build" health, you really need to toughen up and stoplistening to other people when they talk about sickness…

Really!

When someone starts taking about sickness…

The easiest thing to do is…

Change the subject.

If that doesn't work…

You need something to "occupy" you mind to "block" their "destructive"suggestions from reaching your subconscious.

Here's the affirmation I use (it's a slightly modified version of the oneWallace D. Wattles suggests):

"There is one mind, and I am that mind. That mind knows only health; Iam that mind, and I am health."*

* All of Wallace D. Wattles writings are based on the monistic idea of the Universe -that One is All and All is One. Nowhere does he explain this better than in a series ofarticles he wrote under the title "What is Truth", which he refers to in the Preface ofhis book, The Science of Being Well.

The seven articles in Wallace D. Wattles' "What is Truth" series are available inebook format together with eighteen other rare books and articles written by WallaceD. Wattles from:! http://awesomeaff.aplwdw.hop.clickbank.net

This little phrase, which I've used thousands of times, is almostmagical…

When someone is complaining about his or her health, simply focus onand mentally repeat this affirmation to yourself over and over again.

As you do…

"Feel" health flowing through your entire body.

Then…

As soon as you possibly can…

Get away!

Furthermore…

Whatever you do…

"Do not pity an invalid; to do so is to give him the worst ofsuggestions. What you want to do is to give him the suggestion thathe does not need pity; and how can you do that, if you keep right onpitying him? Of course he will think you unsympathetic; but that isexactly what you want to be. It is no virtue to sympathize withsickness; it is a vice. You cannot help the sick by sympathizing withtheir sickness; you will only make them more uncomfortable andadd to their miseries by doing so. Sympathy with sickness fixes theattention upon sickness, and so tends to make more of it."

Feeling sympathy and sadness for someone who's sick is like throwinggasoline on a fire…

It only serves to fuel the flames of sickness…

It'll never help them become well.

If you want to help someone become well…

Understand and care about the health that's in them…

*Not* the sickness!

Get them to think and talk about getting well.

That'll do them far more good than sympathy and sadness ever will!

Let's summarize…

"So never talk about sickness; never mention your symptoms; andnever listen to those who do. When they will tell you about it, andyou are where you cannot get away, fall back on the mentalaffirmation of health and wholeness. Now and then you will becaught in an afternoon party of people whose whole conversation isof disease, death, deformity, old age, funerals and similar subjects;and when that happens, get out. Never talk about sickness…

Never mention your symptoms, and…

Never listen to those who do.

When someone insists on telling you about sickness and symptoms…

Get away if you can!

If you can't…

Fall back on your mental affirmation of health.

Nowhere is it written…

That you're required to allow others to use your mind as a dumpingground…

It does absolutely nothing whatsoever to help them…

And…

Its effect on you can be devastating.

Remember…

If you want to "build" health…

Never, ever talk about sickness…

Forget it…

And…

Part 3 - Talk That Builds Health by Wallace D.Wattles

Conclusion

Every thought you think is either:

1. Constructive, or it's…

2. Destructive.

It either:

1. Builds, or it…

2. Destroys.

Every action you take is either:

1. Constructive, or it's…

2. Destructive.

It either:

1. Builds, or it…

2. Destroys.

Every word that comes out of your mouth is either:

1. Constructive, or it's…

2. Destructive.

It either:

1. Builds, or it…

2. Destroys.

Appendix B - About Wallace D. Wattles

Wallace D. Wattles

Although he wrote some of the most powerful, lifechanging books ever written, unfortunately verylittle is known about the life of Wallace D. Wattles.

We do know that he was born in the United Statesin 1860, and experienced a life of failure afterfailure, until - in his later years, after tireless studyAnd experimentation - he formulated and put intopractice the scientific principles he later wroteabout in his books.

Here are excerpts from a letter written to his publisher by his daughter,Florence, shortly after his untimely death in 1911, which were publishedin The Science of Being Great.* She writes:

My dear Mrs. Towne:

Your letter of the 14th received . . . perhaps a little later I can write theromantic story of my Father's life and make it really worthwhile.

You knew, didn't you, that he lost a good position in the MethodistChurch because of his "heresy"? He met George D. Herron at aconvention of reformers in Chicago in 1896 and caught Herron's socialvision. I shall never forget the morning he came home. It was Christmas.Mother had put her last dollar into a cuff box and we had placed itbeneath an evergreen branch which served for our Christmas tree andwhich we had illuminated with tallow candles and strung with popcorn. Finally Father came. With that beautiful smile he praised the tree, saidthe cuff box was just what he had been wanting - and took us all in hisarms to tell us of the wonderful social message of Jesus, the message

which he later embodied in A New Christ.* From that day until his deathhe worked unceasingly to realize the glorious vision of humanbrotherhood.

For years his life was cursed by poverty and the fear of poverty. He wasalways scheming and planning to get for his family those things whichmake the abundant life possible. In the first chapter of The Science ofGetting Rich he says: "A man's highest happiness is found in thebestowal of benefits on those he loves."** The supreme faith of the mannever left him; never for a moment did he lose confidence in the powerof the master Intelligence to right every wrong and to give to every manand woman his or her share of the good things of life.

When we came to Elwood (Indiana) three years ago, Father began aSunday night lectureship in Indianapolis. This was our only source ofincome. Later he began to write for Nautilus and to word out his ownphilosophy. He wrote almost constantly. Then it was that he formed hismental picture. He saw himself as a successful writer, a personality ofpower, an advancing man, and he began to work toward the realizationof this vision . . . . He lived every page of The Science of Being Great.***

In the last three years he made lots of money, and had good health, except for his extreme frailty.

I have written this hurriedly, but I think it will give you an idea of thelife struggle of a great man - his failure and success. His life was truly * A New Christ by Wallace D. THE POWERFUL LIFE,* and surely we can say, at least in Elwood,"The name of him who loved his fellow men led all the rest."

With all good wishes, I am,

Very sincerely,

FLORENCE A. WATTLES

Although very little is known about his life, we like so many others, whohave studied and applied his scientific principles and detailed plans ofaction, are so very grateful that he lived and wrote them down.
