There’s always a lot going on at Servco. At any point in time, we have many different projects underway—the goals of which are improving customer service, increasing employee satisfaction, higher efficiency, and/or becoming more effective. At times these projects are operationally focused, while others concentrate more on the resources/support areas. However, these projects often become “cross functional,” meaning various areas within Servco need to be involved in order to successfully complete the endeavor.

Recently, we’ve had a lot of activity in the real estate area. One aspect of real estate projects that can sometimes differ from other projects is timing, meaning that completion of such projects takes a while. Planning, obtaining necessary approvals, and actually building any substantial real estate improvement is typically a long-term effort. Furthermore, thoughtful planning is critical, since the end result will be with us for quite some time!

So, where are we at with Servco’s real estate?

Down in Australia we are working on a substantial renovation to the Pacific Toyota/Lexus dealership in Cairns. Most of the improvements underway are focused on the customer-facing space for new and used vehicle sales. Likewise, at Dubbo City Toyota/Lexus of Dubbo, we are working on renovating the showroom and service department intake areas. Both projects are expected to be completed before the end of 2017.

Servco Pacific Insurance employees in Seattle moved into their new space in late 2016 at 800 Fifth Avenue in downtown Seattle. This relocation occurred to accommodate SPI’s growth, as about 50 employees now work out of the larger Seattle office space.

Over on Kauai, in December 2016, Kauai Toyota/Subaru moved into the newly constructed Servco Auto Kauai dealership located in one of the new retail hubs on the Garden Isle. Although our sales and service/parts team is still getting settled into their new “digs,” we are excited about having a single dealership site (previously, the sales and service/parts departments were located on separate properties) to serve our Kauai customers.

Here on Oahu, work continues on the hydrogen fueling station, to be located on the Ewa (or West) end of the Servco Toyota Honolulu parking field. This project has been delayed from the original planned timetable due to unexpected delays with permitting. We still hope to complete the hydrogen fueling station in 2017, and in the meantime, work on reconfiguring the lot for better traffic flow and parking. With the closure of Scion back in August 2016, and the relocation of Subaru sales into the old Scion space, we are

Q: With all the cars being sold would you think of opening another big service shop that can be full-functioning like STH?

A: This is a great question and has been “top of mind” for all of us. To me, one of our biggest challenges is to “intentionally” plan out what Servco would look like in 10-20 years from now. We are currently, in the early development stages on “master planning” all of our properties and locations to better serve all our Sales and Service guests. Enlarging our service facilities to enhance “service guest experience” is in the “master plan” for all of our brands. Finding the right location is both hard to find and extremely expensive. Corporate Properties has hired two new talented people in properties, Casey Ching and Brett Lau, to assist with this “master plan”. We are confident, both Casey and Brett will help us on this incredible journey of growth. So the simple answer is, “Yes”, we are thinking real hard on this great question.

Alan Young, Senior Vice President, Auto Retail

Q: Would it be possible to start bringing in Toyota Pixis Trucks? They’re flatbed trucks costing about $11,000.

A: This is one of many domestic Toyota vehicles produced exclusively for the Japan market, and not available for export to the U.S. Before a vehicle can be imported, it has to meet U.S. specifications for safety, emissions, crash tests, etc. It is unlikely that Toyota will export this vehicle to the U.S., because of the cost to make the vehicle compliant with all U.S. specs, and assuring that there is a market for the vehicle here. That said, it is a pretty cool truck!

also looking at ways to better utilize the Diamond Head (or east) side of the Mapunapuna property. In Kaimuki, as you may have heard, we will be closing Servco Toyota Service Kaimuki (STSK) and converting it to a Subaru new car sales dealership. In considering our decision to close STSK, we tempered the desire to accommodate Toyota service guests with the growing need for Subaru facility expansion. The closing of any service location is never easy, however, improvements in our other service areas will yield no net loss of service due to the closing. The addition of three new service bays at Servco Auto Waipahu and the soon-to-be-implemented 4/10 schedule at Motor Imports near downtown Honolulu will help address some of the service hour shortfall.

At Servco Auto Waipahu, Corporate Properties continues to analyze ways to better use the space (which is a water retention basin). Unfortunately, during rainy periods, we are unable to park cars in the basin, which severely impacts our business. Our hope is to find an economical way to improve the area to allow cars to park on this acreage, regardless of weather conditions.

Jumping back to the neighbor islands, planning continues for new Lexus and Subaru dealerships on

Maui. We acquired about four acres of land located in a rapidly developing business park close to Kahului Airport, which should be an ideal location for the new dealerships. Our operational folks, working with Corporate Properties and outside architects, have designed floor plans, for which we are working to obtain necessary approvals. We expect this project to be completed sometime in 2018.

Smaller projects, such as “refreshes” of Servco Lexus Honolulu’s new car sales and service department intake areas, and Servco Toyota Windward, are also being planned. Another project involves looking at how to best serve the Toyota owner who works in the downtown Honolulu area, and wants a convenient location to service his or her vehicle. Additionally, we feel that when it comes to the Subaru brand on Oahu, with its recent strong growth in vehicle sales, our facilities may need to be upgraded further.

Without a doubt there’s a lot going on with our real estate, and clearly Servco is investing some real money back into its facilities to support our businesses.

Even if you don’t see physical changes to our properties now, there is likely a lot happening behind the scenes for the future!

From January 27th to the 29th, the Neil S. Blaisdell Center Exhibition Hall transformed into a DIYer's dream, aisles of the latest home products, new building trends, and innovative technologies in home construction filled the 2017 Home Building and Remodeling Show.

Servco Home and Appliance Distribution (SHAD) was a Platinum Corporate Sponsor of the event, displaying the latest appliances from GE Café, Monogram, Bosch, Thermador, Coyote, and Franke. SHAD also showcased items from its recently added brand, Haier—the largest appliance company in the world and the new parent of GE Appliances—which was positively received for its innovative features and great looks, all at a very reasonable price.

A popular item at the SHAD booth was the brand new indoor, electric Monogram 30” Pizza Oven—the first one off the assembly line. With the ability to create the perfect pizza in just minutes, and an array of preset pizza cooking options, this sophisticated appliance combines the ease of a traditional oven with the capabilities of the best pizzeria in town. The oven was fully functional at the show, bringing in customers with the scent of pizza that was served by the slice.

Another popular appliance was a prototype portable electric Coyote grill. Set for a May product launch, this grill will have a strong appeal to many condos owners where HOAs prevent open flames on lanais.

“Our team puts in a lot of hard work and long hours to make our booth run smoothly, but, the BIA Show continues to be a tremendous way to reach customers interested in home building or remodeling, and to show off our newest products,” said Craig Washofsky, president of Servco Home and Commercial Products.

Over 25,000 people attended this year’s show, a 6% increase over last year. On Friday night alone, year-over-year attendance skyrocketed from 3,800 in 2016, to over 5,000. With over 100 vendors and organizations present at the show, it was difficult for customers to leave without at least an idea of what they would like their dream home to be. For the past 23 years, the BIA-Hawaii Home Building and Remodeling Show has been about bringing together Hawaii’s finest and most reputable builders and suppliers, and connecting them with consumers to strengthen the housing industry.

Last month, nearly 800 people woke up at 7:00 a.m. to trudge through mud puddles with Subaru Hawaii at the 2017 Swamp Romp.

Hawaii’s oldest mud run, the Swamp Romp, started 23 years ago on Marine Corps Base Hawaii at Kaneohe Bay. The race, originally created by Marines, takes participants through a 3.5-mile course of tactical obstacles at Nu‘upia Ponds. Subaru Hawaii was a proud sponsor of this year’s military-friendly event that was also open to the public. Race participants can enter as a team of five to six people, or as individuals. “Team Subaru,” sponsored by Subaru Hawaii, consisted of three online and social media contest winners plus their guests, who received free entry to the race.

The WRX STI, popular with military personnel, was displayed on the “drier” side of the field, as information about the Subaru Hawaii Military Discount Program, and Subaru Ambassador Program were promoted throughout the event. Despite the stormy weather on the morning (which almost caused the race to be canceled due to lightning), participants enjoyed their time wrestling the elements with family and friends. An awards ceremony was held at the end of the event, honoring the top three teams and top three individuals. However, everyone was a winner and left with healthier skin, thanks to the complimentary mud bath!

Jacinda Elias Senior Vice President &

Director of Agency Services and OpsJacinda Elias joined Servco Pacific Insurance in 2015 as our senior vice

president and director of Agency Services & Operations. In her role, Jacinda oversees the agency’s mergers and acquisitions activities,

training and development of staff, and overall operational management.

We sat down with Jacinda to learn more about her.

When did you join Servco?

March 2015

What led you to join Servco and how are you settling in?

The exciting opportunities with an expanding insurance firm, a globally expanding Hawaii business, and a leadership team I trust. My Servco life has been an absolute whirlwind — relocating to our Seattle office after just more than a year in the Honolulu office. It is quite challenging working in different time zones with extended work days, but it’s hugely important to me to be as available as possible to our people in both regions. I love being a bridge builder and working to make connections. The culture, people, surroundings, and, of course, weather are all very different in Washington compared to Hawaii. We are really enjoying the ferry commute (I live on Bainbridge Island across the sound) and snow days, but are seriously missing good Chinese food! All of my experiences culminate in my work and challenges at hand. I’m thrilled to be part of such a talented team!

Can you tell me about your past work experiences?

I’ve been in insurance brokerage for 20 years, after essentially growing up in the industry. My mother led a successful career in the insurance industry, since I was quite young. I would go to the office with her sometimes, help file and do other projects. She worked with some of the greatest people in the Hawaii industry, who really took good care of us. My step-father worked in life insurance and my uncle in health insurance. Even my dad and his brothers all worked in sales management. I guess business, sales and management run in the family! I’ve had a tremendous career, with solid managerial advancement, tremendous benefits, and some fun travel. I’ve been very blessed to be in leadership and ownership positions in the industry with some great firms and worked with equally great people throughout the years. For a stint, I took a break from brokerage and started an outdoor retailer similar to REI (I loved REI and now live in REI country) that had me climbing walls—high stress but lots of fun!

What do you see as key priorities for your role here?

It’s critical that I help our firm create and implement a solid operational infrastructure that supports us now and for future growth. The most important aspect of that is attracting, retaining, and really developing our people to be the best professionals they can be.

How do you measure success?

Executing a sound vision with a solid team and having fun doing it. Also, starting and ending the day with passion!

How would you characterize your leadership style?

With degrees in psychology and diplomacy, I find that my style is best explained by servant leadership. I have a level of confidence and attitude that may not always show the degree of humility I bring into my position, but every action I take is intended to support others in being their best. Being able to accomplish that is hugely important to me.

What is your proudest accomplishment?

All of my children. Beyond raising a strong, young, free thinker (meaning sassy and kolohe) who is currently all of eight…I’d say the opportunities I’ve had to run and even start businesses have been amazing.

What was one of the hardest lessons you learned in your business career?

Business doesn’t value the people factor to the extent it really should. We’re getting better, but still have a significantly long way to go.

Can you tell us about your childhood? Where were you born and raised?

I was born and raised in Hawaii, from Waimanalo to Makiki, and places in between. My maternal side of the family is originally from Maui and some of my favorite memories are from traveling there every summer with my grandmother and great-grandmother to visit our Maui cousins. This is the family I grew up with and started from fairly humble beginnings. I joke that Kamehameha wouldn’t take me (that dang quota system), so I had to settle for Punahou and thank God for scholarships and having some smarts and athletic prowess. I immersed myself in sports year round — volleyball, softball, and track — and lived and breathed TEAM.

Significant other? Children? Pets?

Very taken, and have an eight-year-old son mentioned earlier.

What do you enjoy in your spare time?

Kicking it with those I love, hiking, lazy days…life.

What’s your favorite food?

Without a doubt, spaghetti. I think it was the first dish my mom taught me to cook, but I’ll eat it anywhere, any time.

What is your favorite word?

Can

What is your least favorite word?

Can’t

What inspires you creatively, spiritually, or emotionally?

My personal mission, bridge-building, doing right and good, connecting with our creator — leaving this world a brighter, better place. I’m always a student — of industry, of people, of life, of our connection to each other.

Who do you admire most either professionally or personally?

I have many, those in life who dared, who struggled, who took risks to make the world around them a better place. But, my go-to has always been my mom, who made me and has given me the chance to do those things.

From Chevrolet to Toyota to Fender, Servco has a history of partnering with major

international and domestic brands. Last month, Servco aligned itself with another iconic brand by launching an investment platform that acquired two Harley-Davidson dealerships in Western Australia, Perth Harley-Davidson and Southwest Harley-Davidson. The acquisition was painstakingly negotiated and carried out by

the team at Servco Pacific Capital (SPC), marking our in-house, private equity firm's

first major acquisition since it officially started operating last year. The deal closed in

early February.

Servco Aligns with Another Iconic American Brand

Perth & Southwest Harley-DavidsonStarting in Australia wasn’t a bad place to launch this investment platform. Together, Perth and Southwest Harley-Davidson sold and delivered over 900 new motorcycles in 2016. In the case of Perth H-D, it’s the single largest seller of new Harleys in Australia and New Zealand, and in 2014 and 2015, it was named the H-D Australia/New Zealand Dealer of the Year. While Janopaul does see the future of the fledging dealership group in Asia Pacific, where significant market growth is projected, Australia already is the largest motorcycle market outside of North America.

Oliver Dunkel and his family previously owned the two dealerships via a trust. The family started their small business in 2004 after taking ownership of the NT Motorcycle and then Bundaberg Motorcycles.

. In 2011, the family headed west for the opening of Perth Harley-Davidson. In 2014, they took ownership of Southwest Harley-Davidson in Bunbury, WA. Even though the Dunkel Family had other interested suitors for their dealership group, the fact that he viewed Servco as an investor instead of a corporate buyer was the key factor in his decision. Oliver Dunkel, the patriarch of the family, looks forward to partnering with SPC to pursue other endeavors in the future.

Lawson DixonFrom an operational perspective, the platform will be lead by Lawson Dixon, who has been appointed as the Managing Director of Southern Cross Motorcycle Holdings. An Australia native, Lawson is quite familiar with the Harley-Davidson brand. Prior to aligning with SPC as its first operating partner, he was the General Director of Harley-Davidson Vietnam and was the Dealer Principal of H-D dealerships in Saigon, Danang and Hanoi. Lawson also is a permanent member of H-D’s global consultative dealer body – Dealer Engagement Group, and, maybe most importantly, has been riding motorcycles for over 40 years. Lawson and his family will initially be based in Perth, Australia.

“Servco’s values really came through in our negotiations with the seller. Moreover, Servco’s stewardship of iconic brands like Fender, together with the company’s deep experience in retail operations, makes it an ideal partner for Harley-Davidson in the Asia Pacific region,” said Lawson Dixon.

“The acquisition of this leading Harley-Davidson dealership group was a validation of the story behind SPC – seasoned entrepreneurs are looking to partner with patient, long-term capital,” said Matt Janopaul, Managing Director of Servco Pacific Capital. “This is just the beginning of what we envision as a network of dealerships throughout Asia, Australia and beyond.”

To acquire the dealerships, SPC created an investment platform that plans to acquire a large network of independent dealerships. As more dealerships are acquired, the acquisitions will be made by holding companies based in Hong Kong and Australia. The Australian holding company is called Southern Cross Motorcycle Holdings PTY LTD. At present, the acquired entities will operate as portfolio companies of Servco Pacific Capital, similar to Fender, rather than operating subsidiaries of Servco Pacific Inc.

(L to R): Jessica Nohara, Financial Reporting Manager,

and Haylee Faustin, Account Manager, volunteering

with Team Serve at the 2015 Summer Games.

What is the Special Olympics Hawaii?Special Olympics Hawaii (SOHi) provides year-round sports training and athletic competition to children and adults with intellectual disabilities. The organization believes that through sports, athletes not only develop physical fitness, but are pushed to demonstrate courage and commitment to grow personally and socially. Besides athletic activities, SOHi also has a range of lesser known health and life skills programs to serve our special needs community.

How many years have you been with the organization?I’ve volunteered with SOHi at the Summer Games since 2007, but got more involved when I joined Team Serve. In 2013 I was asked to coordinate Servco’s volunteer efforts at the Summer Games and I’ve assisted in that capacity every year since.

What is your current role in the organization? During last year’s Summer Games, I approached SOHi to see if there was an opportunity for us to get more involved. Shortly thereafter, we launched SOHi’s inaugural Young Executives (YEs) Board. The Board brought together young professionals from all industries, and is focused on supporting the mission of the organization through volunteerism and fundraising. I currently serve as the vice chair of the Board.

How did you first get involved with the organization?

I think it’s important for everyone to have a passion project, or a community cause that they whole-heartedly support; the Special Olympics was my grandma’s passion. Recognizing her love for the organization, I reached out to SOHi to see if I could volunteer. I was welcomed to help at the Summer Games check-in tent, where I didn’t know a single person I worked alongside. A decade later, I’ve gotten to know some of the greatest people through our volunteer efforts, and now have my own reasons why it’s my passion project.

Give specific examples of events/programs that the organization puts on.

As far as sporting events, the Summer Games is the most recognized event of the year, bringing over 1,000 athletes and coaches statewide, to compete in Track & Field, Swimming, Softball, and Powerlifting. What most people don’t realize is SOHi actually offers year-round sports training and competitions, including the Aukake Classic in the spring (soccer and bocce ball tournament) and the Holiday Classic in the winter (basketball, bowling, and bocce ball tournament).

Because athletes are never asked to pay for their participation at any event, fundraising is a critical component to the organization’s success. SOHi coordinates a number of unique ways for people to donate, including the Polar Plunge which is coming up on April 1. I’m so proud that some of our senior executives are taking the plunge for the athletes of Special Olympics Hawaii that day.

Haylee Faustin | Special Olympics Hawaii

What is your favorite part about helping with this organization?

Not to sound cliché, but I couldn’t just name one. Going out and watching the athletes compete is a great way to see all of their hard work come to fruition. As part of the awards process, we get to interact and engage with each athlete in their moment of success. But if I had to choose, I’d say it’s the friendships you make with the athletes and coaches. A lot of these people come out year after year, and the competitions are a great time to reconnect.

Why do you think that it is important for employees at Servco to be a part of other organizations in the community, and volunteer their time outside of work?

I think it’s important for people to realize there’s more to life than the day-to-day routines we get caught up in. Whether you’re raising a family or just starting out in your career, it’s so easy to forget that we’re all responsible for the greater good. Community service and volunteerism is important because it teaches people, at any age, compassion and understanding, and is also a means to

advocate for the causes that are important to you.

What piece of advice would you give to Servco employees who are looking for volunteering opportunities in the community?

Just get out there and do it. Servco coordinates a number of volunteer opportunities throughout the year, ranging from beach clean-ups to blood drives. Not every company is as grounded in the philosophy of community service, and Servco does a great job to make sure employees and their families find ways to get involved. Commit to a couple projects and see what your passion project becomes.

Are you involved in any other organizations/clubs/positions on external boards or committees?

I’m also on the Board of Directors for the Hawaii Association of Health Underwriters (HAHU) and Aloha

United Way’s (AUW) Society of Young Leaders (SYL).

Fueling Your FutureThree Tips for the “Year of the Rooster”Written by Phyllis Horner, VP, Executive Development

FUELING YOUR FUTURE

This year, in Chinese Astrology, is the year of the Rooster. Initiated on January 28, it is traditionally a time for clear planning and straightforward dealings with everyone. According to the Chinese horoscope, this year is best described as “Never give up and never give in.” Courage, patience and hard work are what will count toward success.

If you’re thinking, “well that’s what always counts,” I agree!

I suppose the attraction of the annual naming of the year is to understand the balance in life and work, and remember that although we are important to the results of our family and workplace, our opinion is only one point of view.

Here at Servco we usually excel at the hard work, patience and “never give up” part of our jobs.

As 2017 unfolds, and the quick pace of work and change continue (unstoppable as it may seem), here are three tips for thriving in your work.

Tip 1:

Be Courageous – instead of worrying when times are tough. Keep pushing through. Though this is much easier said than done, it helps to remember one thing—tough times are when things come up that we don’t anticipate or which we think won’t benefit us. Servco’s commitment to teamwork means that we help each other succeed when things go wrong. If you think about all the challenges we have faced together in the past, you’ll know this to be true, as we drive the path forward together!

Tip 2:

Be Patient – instead of losing patience with others. When work is hectic and we face approaching deadlines and the pressure to do things right, remember that everyone else is just as focused on their problems as you are on yours. In the moment when you choose to have patience with someone else, even though you don’t feel like it, that is when you help the whole company live up to our Core Values of Respect and Teamwork. Yes, you know it matters.

Tip 3:

Lighten Up – instead of freezing up. I will admit, this is the hardest one for me personally, but it is also really important for many reasons. When? When the customer is yelling on the phone, or the computer stalls, or someone walks by you and says hi to everyone else, or your boss …. well, you know. If at the moment you feel like you aren’t being treated fairly, you should think about the long term or about how this can teach you something positive, and you’ll be able to get through it. All the research shows that taking things lightly not only helps us grow as people, but it helps us stay physically healthy too.

We’re always interested in other tips you have for how to make it through the rocking and rolling world of work we experience.

Miso Ginger Pork Recipe by Chef Alan Wong

INGREDIENTS:1 ½ lbs. Pork Butt, sliced into 1.5” slices

¼ cup Kokuho Japanese Rice, raw

2 cups Yamasa Soy Sauce

1 cup Miyako Sake

4 cups Water

4 cups White Granulated Sugar

3” piece Ginger, skin on, smashed

1 cup Maru-hi White Miso

2 ½” Ginger, skin on, smashed

PROCEDURE:Place the pork butt slices in a pot. Pour enough water in the pot to cover the pork. Place the rice inside the pot with the pork. Bring to a boil over high heat. Strain the water and rice and discard.

Return the pork to the pot with the soy sauce, sake, water, and sugar. Cover with a cartouche and let simmer over medium heat for one hour.

Add the smashed ginger and let simmer again for about one to two hours until the pork is tender.

Add the miso and more ginger, being careful not to boil the mixture. Remove from the heat and let sit in the liquid to cool. Slice into desired size.
