Sowing dates and seed rateThese will vary depending on soil type, seed bed and drilling dateamongst others. A suggested seed rate for Talisman is around 300-325seeds/m2 for mid-September sowings in good conditions. This should bealtered appropriately for later drilling and adverse conditions.
NitrogenGetting the correct nitrogen quantity and timing on a malting crop iscrucial for achieving the desired grain nitrogen. Commercial maltingbarley crops normally receive around 100 -140 kg N/ha. This should bedelivered in two splits, the first applied late February/early March andthe second split around GS30/31 or before the end of March. The firstsplit should be approximately 40-50Kg N/ha with the balance at thesecond timing. This is only a guide and actual decisions should be madeaccording to soil type, soil nitrogen supply, environmental conditions, previous cropping, crop stage and end market requirements. Sulphurmay also be required, so speak to your agronomist.
Growth RegulatorsWhen grown under a malting nitrogen regime Talisman has reasonablelodging resistance. It should however receive a good growth regulationstrategy to ensure it remains standing and achieves the best possibleyield and quality.
FungicidesTalisman has good resistance to all diseases and is also BaYMVresistant. It will, however, benefit from a standard fungicide programmeto enhance yield potential and grain quality.
MaturityTalisman is one of the earliest winter malting barley varieties on theRecommended List. As with any quality crop it should be given priorityat harvest to ensure that it maintains its quality.
Disease resistanceTalisman shows very good resistance to all diseases and is resistantto BaYMV.
