Media Release September 2014 Manchester Literature Festival features immersive story by North West writers Sponsored by SapientNitroSM and supported by Arts Council England Tales from the Towpath: a textural treasure hunt Locations across Manchester, Monday 6 – Sunday 19 October 2014 * Four award winning writers are collaborating to make an immersive story exploring Manchester’s waterways. It consists of a treasure hunt of story episodes delivered via locational apps, an origami narrowboat, a micro- projection and a live performance on a traditional narrowboat. For 14 days the story-trail is freely available for self-guided tours by the public, who can submit ideas that will influence the performance. Performance The story trail culminates in a rich multi-voiced performance on a traditional narrowboat. The actions of the past lead us to this innocent-seeming narrowboat berthed in a quiet corner of the Castlefield Basin. In fact it is the launching point for two possible futures depending on how the convictions and courage of our antiheroes stack up. Who becomes slave and to whom rests on the waterways and what’s in and on them. History, passion and some tough decisions provide a waterside evening of intimate atmosphere and big revelations. Tonight the unimaginable becomes believable. Workshops Two connected immersive literature-making workshops for writers will explore ways into writing site-responsive texts and how they can be produced so form complements subject. Artists & Writers Maya Chowdhry is an award-winning writer and inTer-aCtive artist making work for theatre and radio, print and installation. Previous work includes 'destinyNation' an interactive poetic tapestry for the web. ‘Kaahini’ was nominated for Best Children's Theatre: Writers Guild Awards.
