To The Reader:

HUNTSVILLE REGION – A CENTER FOR ENERGY

Huntsville is becoming an economic force in the Energy sector. With a significant amount of

intellectual capital, a pro-business climate, and abundant natural resources, the framework

is for success in this field. Whereas most communities would need to start from scratch,

Huntsville already has the foundations laid for success.

ENERGY HUNTSVILLE

Huntsville’s Mayor Tommy Battle created Energy Huntsville with the goal of diversifying

and expanding Huntsville’s traditional Government contracting economy into new business

markets including the energy sector. Communities that understand how to fully exploit

energy technologies will be the next leaders in the new economy. Energy Huntsville seeks

to help companies leverage their engineering, modeling & simulation manufacturing, and

other high-tech capabilities into energy-related fields.

PURPOSE OF THIS REPORT

This report provides readers insight into energy and energy-related resources in the

Huntsville region. It is patterned after the Tennessee Advanced Energy Business Council’s

(TAEBC) Tennessee Advanced Energy Economic Impact Report, which used information

from the U.S. Government to tabulate the number of businesses, their revenue, and the

number of employees involved in energy and energy-related fields in the State of Tennessee.

This Huntsville report does all that, and also highlights a number of university research

activities, private sector companies, non-profit organizations, and Government programs

related to energy.

Vibrant and Capable Commercial and

Industrial Base

Alabama’s energy portfolio is substantial and increasingly diverse. It ranges from offshore oil and gas production in the Gulf of Mexico to large-scale solar photovoltaic energy production on Redstone Arsenal. The Huntsville Region is an integral part of this vibrant energy ecosystem. Table 1 lists some of the businesses in the Huntsville Region currently providing energy products and services or pursuing energy business. The list includes a number of national and multi-national corporations with energy portfolios as well as many smaller, energy-

related businesses operating in the region, providing products and services directly to customers as well as larger businesses. This network affords a vital supply chain for businesses currently operating in the region and a vital resource for energy-related businesses

contemplating new operations in the region.

The range of energy products and services provided by businesses span the generation of energy, energy distribution, and its efficient use by the commercial, residential, and public sectors. Corporations, as well as small businesses, support the production of energy at the Browns Ferry nuclear plant, the Lake Guntersville hydro-electric plant, the Solid Waste Disposal Authority’s waste-to-energy plant, and solar photovoltaic installations at residences, commercial buildings, and Redstone Arsenal. Examples of the diverse energy products produced in the Huntsville Region include Madison-based, Accurate Machine and Tool Corporation, which manufactures spent

fuel storage gates and reactor cooling doors for nuclear power plants. Shoals Technology Group manufactures a wide range of products used in solar photovoltaic installations worldwide.

Businesses supporting renewable energy production using solar, hydro, and biomass and solar contribute to the sustainability of the Huntsville Region as well

as increase economic vitality. Avion Solutions for example, installed 50 kW DC of grid-tied solar photovoltaic energy at their commercial site in Huntsville. The waste-to-energy plant in Huntsville operated by Covanta Energy incinerates municipal solid waste (renewable biomass) to generate 800,000Klbs of steam each year for Redstone Arsenal which is used to heat and cool buildings.
