CHRISTMAS HAMPER CATALOUE 2013
Music for your tastebuds
Pasta artigianale, exquisite olive oil, flavourful juices, fine vintages... this is the taste of Christmas, a taste that Talbot & Bons has married into a symphony of luxurious hampers, each denoting a particular instrument from the orchestra. The contents of each individual hamper are as unique as the name, and the selection includes the most sinful of treats, as well as some lovely options for the more health-conscious among you, such as gluten-free pasta and organic soft drinks. Of course, there is also the option of creating your own, custom-made ‘symphony’, both with regards to content and packaging. As for the men, we are offering something with their specific tastes in mind...
Let the music play on...and don’t forget to drop in on Wednesday evening, to enjoy our real life music sessions.

classical music.

Castanets are a gypsy folk instrument and are played with great artistry by Spanish fla-
menco dancers. It’s extremely possible that castanets may in fact be a local wooden ver-
sion of the brass finger cymbols that were introduced into Spain by Muslin conquerors
from around 700 AD.

range of two to four octaves. They are played with
mallets.
Bongos (Spanish: bongó) are an Afro-Cuban percussion instrument. The drums are of different size: the
larger drum is called in Spanish the hembra (female) and the
smaller the macho (male). They are membranophones, or instruments
that create sound by a vibration of a stretched membrane.

Cymbals are a common percussion instrument. Cymbals consist of thin, normally round plates of various alloys; see cymbal making for a discussion
of their manufacture. The majority of cymbals are of indefinite pitch, although small disc-shaped cymbals based on ancient designs sound a definite note.

The triangle is an idiophone type of musical instrument in the percussion family. It is a bar of metal, usually steel but sometimes other metals like beryllium copper, bent into a triangle shape. The instrument is usually held by a loop of some form of thread or wire at the top curve. It was first made around the 16th century

A viola instrument came along at the same time as the violin. It first existed during the 16th century. It was larger than the violin and was made in an alto and a tenor version, which was larger. By the 18th century, it was part of four piece ensembles. However, with the increase popularity of music written specifically for the violin, the viola started to be ignored. Therefore, the violins were improved much faster than the violas. In fact, by the 18th century the design of the violin had been perfected. The viola has yet to reach this pinnacle.
Violin€14.50
While playing the violin you burn 170 calories an hour.Violinists have more connections between the two sides of the brain which accounts for the better co-ordination they have between each hand compared with a non-violin player. The world’s smallest violin is less than 1 centimetres long in body and fits into a box of matches. It is made from a piece of wood the size of a thumbnail and it took 7 years to make.

The trombone is derived from an instrument called a sackbut. Yes, you read that correctly, sackbut. The name sackbut is derived from the Middle French words saquer and bouter literally means “pull, push”. This is a very fitting name for the instrument since it was the first instrument to have a movable slide. This is unique to the instrument. The sackbut was mainly used in sacred and court music settings during the 1600s. Interestingly, the trombone has changed very little since its precursor, the sackbut. Many other instruments have been improved with major revisions to their original design. Apparently, trombone was the closest to perfection!
Conductor
DoubleBass
bowed stringed musical instrument, the contrabass of the modern orchestral string section. It originated as a double-bass viol, an instrument described as early as 1566. A true double-bass violin appeared during the 18th cent. but was rejected as unwieldy and of poor tonal quality. The present double bass is tuned in fourths and usually has a flat back and sloping shoulders but has never attained a definitive form. The bow, the last to give up its convex shape, was long held palm upward like the viol bow, but the violin style is now customary. Indispensable in the orchestra, it also has a place in the dance band and jazz.

Conducting is the art of directing a musical performance by way of visible gestures. The primary duties of the conductor are to unify performers, set the tempo, execute clear preparations and beats, and to listen critically and shape the sound of the ensemble. Orchestras, choirs, concert bands and other musical ensembles often have conductors.
