Happy June to all!

Congratulations to everyone on a wonderful, colorful and successful show. It is

amazing how everything flowed so well and oozed happiness. Everybody had positive

comments and praise for the show, the set-up and of course, the quilts.

Thank you for your contributions and a job well done to all.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for all of your support and kind words

throughout the year, in particular Christine De Block (past president), Suzanne Hurtubise (vice-

president), and Julie Tessier (evening chair). They, and many others have made my first year

fun and easy. The support that I have received through the year has been invaluable, and has

put me at ease. I was very nervous at the beginning of the year, but soon learned that there was

no reason to be. Thank-you everyone!

I am looking forward to seeing everyone in September. Wishing you all a happy, healthy and

safe summer.

It’s the last meeting of the year and we’re celebrating with a picnic. Now’s the time to get

creative with your brown bag fare - prizes will be given to the most original lunches! Next year’s

program will be previewed at the June meeting and we’ll also reveal the new theme.

Johanna Dupont will delight us with a lecture and trunk show, sharing the techniques she uses in

her own prize-winning landscape quilts. Johanna’s presentation will give us the best possible

start for the 2012-2013 landscape quilt project, “Along the St. Lawrence River”. Sign up at the

June meeting and pick up your kit with project details and the blue fabric to be used for the

water. You won’t want to miss this collective art quilt project celebrating our mighty river. For

more inspiration : a few panels from the “Along the Rogue” quilt, a homage to the Rogue River

by the Rogue Art Quilters of Southern Oregon. See the whole project here.

Log Cabin Corner

We have loved the log cabin theme and want to wrap up the year with something funky and fun.

Check out Linda Nussbaum’s tutorial for wonky log cabin diamonds and make a modern

masterpiece. This free-form block is perfect for your loveliest scraps!

Clean out your quilting stash, drawers and shelves for the June evening AUCTION! One

person’s trash is another’s treasure, so bring everything you are not using for the auction. Please

label the contents (i.e. 1 metre cotton, or fat quarter, etc.) and put your name on your

contributions, if you want to keep 75% of the proceeds. The remaining 25% will go to outreach.

You can also choose to donate everything to outreach if you like. Heather McClure has agreed to

be our entertaining auctioneer as always.

Just a reminder that all members are invited to send in an article for our newsletter which might

be of interest to quilters. The deadline I usually adhere to is noon on the Thursday prior to the

meeting. Should you wish to send in a ‘blurb’, please do so to Email address –

The form is now available on line so please remember to fill it in. For those of you who have

submitted your form please remember to bring in your fees or mail them to me before September

1st. You are not registered until I have your payment and form. If you have already paid but not

filled in the form please do so as soon as possible. After September 1st I will begin to accept

people from the waiting list.

If you are having a problem submitting the form please do it via the "on Line link" at the top of

the form. If you have any problems email me. One of the problems that has come up is that I

missed a box in the CQQ where you can tick No. If that is your option just tick the option to

renew at a later date. This info is just for us to know the number of members we have who are

CQQ members as we get a spin off from this. We are NOT collecting fees for CQQ.

I have a list of all members who have submitted your form so if you are in doubt check at the

break.

Having the form on line has it's teething problems but it is so much better. We have all the

correct info as it comes from you and it is easy to exchange lists with each of the disciplines ,

Ex. Baking, teaching.

Thank you for your patience in doing this. I know that some people have had a tough time and

others no problem at all. There does not seem to be any reason for this.

I hope everyone had a chance to see the beautiful display of log cabin quilts during the month of

April. Thanks to everyone who lent their work, and special thanks to Marion Perrault, Janet

Guay and Suzanne Bertin Liddy who helped hang the show, and to Janet Guay and Beverley

Shaw who helped take it down. If you did not pick up your quilts, they will be available for pick-

up at the June evening and day meetings.

What a fantastic Exhibition of Quilts and Textile Art we had! Hats off to all of you who have

put in immense time and effort the in organising and executing of, yet again, a wonderful haven

of colours and textures. This includes the many volunteers, but also the many quilters who have

graciously displayed their work of art! I’m also very happy to tell you that the online quilt entry

registration worked like a charm. Doing so cut the work load immensely. We’ll work out the

glitches in time for next year.

This year the Executive Committee decided to organize voting for the various Categories. Since

this was initiated after the Entry Form had been sent out, we did encounter some difficulties

(which will be ironed out for next year, too). But in the end, the radiant smiles and jumps of our

Other IMPORTANT May Show News… the Executive Committee has decided to create a

separate Exhibition Committee. This committee will have a Chairperson to oversee several

small sub-committees. The exact organisation of this Exhibition Committee will be decided this

summer. There are questions in the new online Membership Renewal Form which asks you to

focus your volunteering efforts toward one Committee. Of course, the amount of time and type

of help you can commit will be respected, regardless of the Committee you choose.

Mystery Quilt 2011-2012

To both meetings in June I will bring a sample of last month’s alternating log cabin block and

will answer any questions about its construction. I will send out this month a couple of other

suggestions for setting your beautiful star blocks. Complete your quilt top over the summer, and

bring it in to our September meetings. We will have a draw of prizes which I have purchased

from the $5 entry fee that you all paid at the start of the mystery. For EACH pieced or appliqued

block in your completed quilt top, you may enter your name in the draw. E.g. if your quilt has 10

star blocks and 11 log cabin alternate blocks, you can enter your name 21 times. If your quilt has

10 star blocks joined with sashing, you can enter your name 10 times. If your quilt has 10 star

blocks and 9 on-point squares, 5 of which have a Little Cutie block (pattern given out this

month), you can enter your name 15 times. This is to encourage those who want to go to town

with new blocks, to do so, and have a bigger chance at the pot than those who just have tried a

couple of blocks. (N.B. only the top needs to be finished to be included in the draw). Thanks to

all who participated so eagerly with this year’s mystery! It was a lot of fun!!! Have a great

summer and keep on quilting!

CREATING ORIGINAL CLOTH, July 28-30th This course is a focused learning course developed to take each student, whether a

beginner or advanced student, to a new and confident place in their exploration of surface

design technique.

During the first weekend, students will explore multiple techniques for painting and dyeing

one of a kind original fabric, development of screen printing technique using thickened dyes,

stamp making and printing. Exploration of two full days with ARISHI SHIBORIdye work is

a new focus for this July 28-30th, 2012 course weekend….

COLLAGE, LAYERING AND STITCH, August 18-20th

The focus for our second weekend is the completion of several original textile art pieces,

destined for display in the home or in public exhibitions. The fabrics created in our first

weekend will be collaged, layered and stitched using both hand and machine stitch

techniques. Students will enjoy the opportunity to explore the art of the stitch as an

important part of their new work. Use of the sewing machine for thread painting the surface

and use of the Embellishing Machine as an important design tool will be shared. Framing

and finishing are an important part of this weekend in the classroom.

Bethany Garner is a Textile Artist demonstrating a strong commitment to the promotion of Fibre as an Art form for

women in the 21st century. Bethany has been active in local and national quilting organizations, serving as a Board

member of CQA/ACC, as a local Textile Educator in Southern Ontario and serves as a Regional Representative with the

Studio Art Quilt Associates, internationally. Beth is a Course Developer/Instructor in the Textile Design Program, St.

Lawrence College, Kingston , Ontario , and has been with the College since 1996.

The TWIST Fibre Festival - Traditional meets Contemporary

This non-profit organization was created by President and CEO Amélie Blanchard, a resident of

Saint-André-Avellin who is totally passionate about textile fibre.

The idea for the festival stemmed from the desire to create a major annual event that would

attract all fibre lovers and enthusiasts.

TWIST, August 24-26, 2012 in St-André-Avellin, is a unique fibre festival in Québec bringing

together the most important players in the field. TWIST is a 3-day event featuring dozens of

workshops, activities, an art exhibit with a modern twist and over 65 exhibitors from all trades of

the fibre industry and dozens of workshops (spinning, felting, weaving, knitting, dyeing and

marketing). It will be an amazing event to have a booth if you are a fibre artist or a fibre-related

For Your Information:

PBS has been running a series on Craft in America. The most recent episode 'Threads', which

aired on May 11, featured artists Faith Ringgold, Randall Darwall, Consuelo Jimenez

Underworld and Teresa Agnew. Agnew's portrait of an overseas garment worker made up of

thousands of designer labels was just one of the many highlights on the program. Word got out

about her portrait and she received labels from around the world to use in its stitching. Be sure to

look for Threads in summer reruns (www.pbs.org/craftinamerica/threads).
