INSIDE OUT: My Story from Fresh 101
Individually, they are Peter, Harry, Ali, Duncan, Edwin, Charlie,
Ben and Matt: teenagers, mostly school students, with their
own tastes and aspirations. Collectively, however, they make
up the crew of Fresh 101, artsNK's all-male Hip Hop Dance
Company!
I interviewed them at the beginning of one of their gruelling
rehearsals, led by Lee 'Ai' Nugent of the Nottingham based
'Groundhogs', and overseen by artsNK 's Head of Dance
Development, Amy Dalton.
The boys themselves are obviously truly dedicated to their
'crew'.
WELCOME INSIDE OUT
artsNK - Experience Great Art
"It's sometimes difficult to fit rehearsals and performances in with school work, especially at revision
and exam time," Peter told me, "but we try really hard to make all the practices and gigs because we
enjoy them so much."
What is it which attracts them to the style?
"It's something very different," replied Edwin. "It's very physical, good exercise and challenging. It's
nothing like many lads imagine; loads of lads think that dancing's very girly, but they couldn't be more
wrong!"
"I don't think that being role models for younger kids is something we're really conscious of," said
Edwin, "but it's great if we are. Perhaps we should get out there more and let others see what a great
activity this is!"
Recently filmed by Sky for a broadcast which will be seen in 118 countries by about 180 million view-
ers, it seems as if 'Fresh 101' already has an established following.
With several of the crew heading off in their own directions this year, many to university, the main goal
of the company's leader, Amy, this year is to keep up the crew's motivation and development.
“I haven't told the lads yet,” Amy revealed,” but my surprise announcement to them tonight is that
they've been invited to perform in London's West End in April at Her Majesty's Theatre!"

ANIMATION: calling all budding film makers!
artsNK's animation workshops, run by Gavin Street,
have proved so popular that a second group might be
created. After being inspired by films from around the
world, participants learn the techniques of making their
own films. Animation clearly captures the public's
imagination and this project, in partnership with
Kesteven and Sleaford High School might even see a
short film festival resulting!
