Do You Know Where Your Goal Cards Are?

In a recent issue of the Nolan Letter, (yet another marketing newsletter I subscribe to),Mark Nolan reminded me of something I used to do but for one reason or another haven’t done

for years.

That is to write down your goals on simple 3 X 5 cards and carry them with youeverywhere you go. You want to review your goal cards as often as possible during the day butthe two key times you must  read your goal cards are right before you go to sleep and first thingwhen you wake up in the morning.

This was one of the key factors to success that Napoleon Hill wrote about in “Think And

Grow Rich”. When you read your goal cards right before you go to sleep and first thing whenyou wake up in the morning it activates your subconscious mind to take advantage of theprinciple of autosuggestion.

If you want to learn more about this topic re-read “Think And Grow Rich”. But for now, right now, get out some 3 X 5 cards and create your own goal cards. I have had this on my to dolist since the beginning of the year but I promise you that I will do it today. How about you?

WORK HARDER ON YOURSELF THAN YOU DO ON YOUR JOB

That’s great advice from motivational speaker Jim Rohn. As entertainers, most of us tendto get caught up in practicing and marketing our show and neglect the developing ourselves ashuman beings.

While it’s extremely important to work on our jobs, it is just as vital to spend time in the

personal development arena. The fact is that if you work on yourself, your income will naturallygrow.

Last month, I asked you whether you had a marketing plan in place for 2001 and told youwhat my marketing plan was. This month, I want to know if you have a personal developmentplan in place. Here’s what I’m doing…

Rome Wasn’t Built Overnight

Are you setting yourself up for disappointment? Are your goals too unrealistic? Are youfrustrated because you’re not reaching your goals fast enough?

If you answered, “yes” to any of those questions (I sure did) then it’s probably time thatyou looked at your business from a different perspective.

It’s so important to realize that building a business or building anything worthwhile takestime. You must plant seeds now in order to harvest in the fall. You must give your business timeto grow.

Expecting instant results will almost always lead to frustration. You see, once you plantseeds, action does start to take place underneath the surface. You can’t see anything happeningbut it is.

After a while, your seeds may show some sign of life but nothing to jump for joy about. But this is a critical time! You have to nurture those seeds by watering them and fertilizing them. Now is not the time for neglect! Now is not the time to say, “I’ve been waiting on these seeds formonths now and I’m only seeing sparse results!” You must keep on keeping on.

Then, come the fall, like magic your seeds grow into a magnificent crop for you toharvest, enjoy and profit from!

The secret to a great harvest is not to neglect planting your seeds in the spring. You can’tneglect planting in the spring and then try to really “turn it on” and start planting and wateringlike crazy because you need a good harvest.

The Healing Power Of Magic

Sometimes when you make your hobby your vocation, some of the fun disappears. Youget so involved in the marketing, sales, and the work of running your business that you forget

why you loved your hobby in the first place.

It’s important to reconnect with the feelings of joy and love that you had when you firstgot started doing magic. How do you do that?

I think the best way is to create joy and happiness for someone else.

Last month a friend of my best friend committed suicide. My friend had the receptionafter the wake at his home. He asked me if I would come over and show the twelve-year-old sonof the man who had killed himself some magic. At first I found this to be a strange request but Isaid I’d do it.

I decided to teach the boy some simple magic that he could do. As I taught and as he gotengrossed in practice, this young man was transformed. He laughed, felt pride in hisaccomplishments, and felt joy in a very sad situation.

But the best part was how this boy spread a little bit of happiness to everyone at thereception when he put on a mini magic “show”. For a few brief moments he helped people forgetabout their grief and sadness.

Why don’t you reconnect with your love for magic by using your talent to create joy andhappiness for someone else this month? Volunteer to do a free magic show at a children’shospital, nursing home, etc. You’ll feel great by making others feel great.

You might be thinking that this doesn’t have anything to do with marketing. The truth isthat it has a LOT to do with marketing and being successful. Think about it.

Do You Have All Of The 13 Qualities

Successful People Possess?

Here are the qualities that corporate CEO and author Albert Dunlap says all successfulpeople possess:

1  They have a fire in their belly.2  They make quick decisions.3  They give great value.4  They are focused on today and tomorrow not on what they did in the past.5  They have pride in what they do and who they are.6  They rise above the crowd by doing what the crowd won’t do.7  They are accountable and know, “if it’s going to be, it’s up to me.”8  They realize that every dollar spent and earned is significant.

They are never satisfied and are always striving to become better.10

They do not fear change.11  They do whoever-it takes to succeed and do not make excuses.12  They have a winning attitude and stretch themselves.13  They demand more from themselves than anyone else could ever possibly expect

I fully realize that this is not the kind of stuff you are going to read in any otherpublication for entertainers but in order for you to rise above the crowd and be successful beyondyour imagination it is necessary for you step outside your box and learn strategies from outsideour industry.

Albert Dunlap earned over 100 million dollars for turning around a single company. Doyou think he could teach us something about increasing our profits?

Fail Forward Fast

A number of years ago, I bought a program called “Passion, Profit, & Power” by the self-proclaimed “Greatest Hypnotist Of All Time”, Marshall Sylver. Although, I can’t recommend

this program, one of the concepts he taught was valuable. It is the concept of “failing forwardfast.”

At first, I didn’t get it. In fact I mocked the concept. “That’s a real nice affirmation,” Isarcastically thought. But when you dig past the surface, it does have merit.

The idea is to take massive action to quickly see whether what your doing is working. Itis better to quickly discover you’re on the wrong path instead of dragging it out over a longperiod of time.

Everything you do is not going to be successful. Since you are going to fail anyway, you

might as well fail quickly, get it done with, and then move on and try something else.

This past month I re-read Joe Sugarman’s classic book on copywriting, “AdvertisingSecrets Of The Written Word” (Highly recommended.) Mr. Sugarman said that he was a biggerfailure than anyone reading his book.

At first I thought, “Wait a minute. This guy is a direct marketing legend. He’s abillionaire! How can he say that he’s a failure?” Mr. Sugarman’s point was he failed more timesand lost more money than anyone else because he has made more attempts than anyone else. Butbecause he tried more things and failed more often, he also succeeded more often.

Think & Grow Rich For Magicians

Napoleon Hill’s classic book “Think And Grow Rich” has probably helped more peopleto become rich than any other book ever published. Here are the four basic principles outlined in

the book:

1. Your philosophy must be based on truth.2. Your thoughts are things.3. You need a burning desire to succeed. Your mind is powerful and can be strengthened.

The four principles are pretty self-explanatory. Although they’re simple, they arepowerful. Examine your current performing career in light of those four principles and see howyou stack up.

Following the wrong formula can keep you from being successful. Following a formula that is

right but incomplete will certainly slow you down on your road to success.

For a while now, I’ve been following an incomplete formula. Maybe you have too.

My mindset has been to only read, study, and listen to what I consider to be “where therubber meets the road” (sales/marketing) educational materials while shunning and almostdenouncing “motivational” programs, thinking that they are just fluff.

I constantly told people that real motivation comes from taking action and seeing theresults of those actions. “When you see the results, that’ll get you motivated,” I said.

Well, I still do believe that. Far too many people try to artificially motivate themselves bysaying affirmations, walking across hot coals, or some other way and never get around to takingaction. As I’ve said before, motivation without action leads to frustration.

But, I have come to realize that motivation and positive thinking are an important, a veryimportant part of the formula for success. You need to have a balance between the “hard”information and the motivational information.

Page 9: take charge - goals book

The Ultimate Success Formula

In Zig Ziglar’s book “Over The Top”, he gives what he considers to be the formula forsuccess. His formula for success is as follows:

MOTIVATION + INFORMATION = SUCCESS

That is a great formula. You definitely need to know what to do (the information) ifyou’re going to be successful, but you also need to have the “fire in your belly” (the motivation). If you are missing either part of the formula, you cannot be successful.

There are people who buy and read every motivational thing they can get their hands on.They are always pumped up and excited. They are definitely “positive” but often without reason. They aren’t actually doing anything. (That used to be me!)

Then there are other people who only immerse themselves in “how to” information. “Ionly want strategies and techniques that work! Don’t give me any of that motivation crap!” istheir mantra. These people get things done and get results BUT, they often get burned out andbecause of that experience times of inaction. (That used to be me too!)

The key word is BALANCE.

Again, you need to have a balance between motivation and information if you are goingto be successful and happy on a long-term basis.

Does the balance between these two factors have to be equal? I don’t think so. I willalways lean more towards the information aspect of the formula because that is where I reallystarted seeing results that lead to me being motivated. BUT, I am definitely adding in much morepure motivation to the mix and am seeing increased results because of it. (Which of course thenleads to more motivation.)

Now Mr. Ziglar’s success formula is almost perfect. I say, “almost” because I would addone more element to it, the element of action. So my formula looks like this …

MOTIVATION + INFORMATION + ACTION = SUCCESS

As you are aware, you can be really motivated and have the best information on theplanet, but unless you take action and utilize what you know you will never be successful. Justbeing motivated to use the information is NOT enough. You must then take action and use theinformation.

Old Is New Once Again

What is the best way for you to learn new marketing strategies and sales strategies foryour business? A lot of people think that they need to get the newest book that’s out or the

newest program. While I continue to invest in all the new stuff myself I also recommend that yougo back and read the classics. The old stuff. The stuff that’s proven to be effective over and overagain.

What we’re talking about here are the fundamental principles of success. As Jim Rohnsays, “Fundamentals are old and they’re proven. You want to beware of anyone that says theyhave a new fundamental. That’s like someone who says they manufacture antiques!”

Here are a number of “classics” I strongly recommend.

The first one, which I am now currently studying, is Psycho-Cybernetics, by Dr. MaxwellMaltz. Psycho-Cybernetics teaches you how to use your brain to increase your income, to

increase the amount of shows that you do, and what he says, “To become a professional humanbeing.”

What Dr. Maltz’s book is about is about increasing your self-esteem, your self-concept.His theory is that you cannot outperform your self-concept, your self-esteem.

We have a certain amount of income that we think we should be making, and once we reach thatamount or surpass that amount, we start to pull back on what we’re doing, to bring us back downto the level that we think that we should be at.

The only way to increase your income is to book more shows and to become a higher-paid entertainer is to change your self-concept, your self-image. When your self-image grows, then your income and the amount of shows that you do will also grow with it.

The second book is Think And Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. That’s a book you just haveto read over and over and over again. In this book, Mr. Hill interviewed hundreds and hundredsof highly successful people, and distilled the information down into an easy-to-read book thatwill teach you how to grow rich.

The next book I recommend is The Richest Man In Babylon. This is by George Clayson. The Richest Man In Babylon is a very simple book. You can read it in probably about a night butit gives you solid wealth-building principles. Mr. Jim Rohn first recommended this book to me.It’s a classic.

How about classic advertising books? There’s a great book that you can get from

Amazon.com or in your bookstore, and it’s called How To Write A Good Advertisement byVictor Schwab. This gives you tons of headlines, exactly how to write emotional copy. It tellsyou exactly how to really influence people through your writing.

What do all of these books have in common? People who succeeded in life before writingthe book wrote all of these books. They actually put their success principles into practice. Whatyou want to do is you want to read books and you want to listen to people who’ve actually donewhat they’re teaching and not made money just from the teaching.

There are many self-help gurus who actually have never done anything in the realbusiness world other than make money teaching other people how to be successful.

So to summarize, read the classic books. Don’t worry if it’s new or old. Only beconcerned with what works.

Ya Gotta Look Sharp

At the recent bootcamp, Eric Paul and Tim Hall, two of my speakers, really stood out forthe same reasons.

Eric Paul is primarily a children’s magician. He averages 50  that’s correct  50 shows amonth. Tim Hall is a corporate performer who’s done extremely well in his first year of being afull-time pro. (Tim, by the way, quit a very lucrative job to become a full-time pro. And hethought that he was going to have some cash flow problems the first year, and he’s had none. Hecouldn’t be any happier, because he’s utilizing proven, solid principles. He just doesn’t thinkabout it. He acts.)

What I noticed about these two guys was how crisp they looked, how crisp their

presentations were, and how crisp their promotional materials were. What does this mean to you?

You want to make your show and marketing as crisp and clean and tight as possible. This

encompasses the way you look, how you answer the phone, and how your promotional materialsappear.

HOW DO YOU MEASURE UP?

The first thing is to make sure that your props look nice and new. You don’t want yourprops to look beat-up.

After seeing these two guys, I analyzed my kid show and looked at my props. I noticedthat they are beat-up. They look like they have been through the war, because they have beenthrough the equivalent of a war! Things get banged up and nicked. My props just don’t lookgood anymore. So if I’m going to continue to do kid shows, I need to go and buy new props for

the show, so everything looks new and fresh.

By having your props look new and fresh, you’re projecting to the audience that you careand that you are a professional.

One of the reasons I don’t like to use a lot of silk handkerchiefs in my show is simplybecause if you’re doing a number of shows back-to-back, by the last show, those handkerchiefsare going to be all wrinkled and nasty. You have to make sure that everything looks fresh andclean.

Let’s talk about your personal appearance. It’s been said before, but I’m going to say itagain. You must have your shoes shined. One of the things I noticed almost immediately about

Tim and Eric was that their shoes were well polished and looked beautiful.

Tim has a pair of shoes that he only wears when he does a show. Because of that thoseshoes look absolutely fantastic. There are still some old-timers out there in the corporate worldthat will judge a person’s character by the shine of their shoes.

You can like that or not. You may think that’s ridiculous. But that’s reality. If you havewell-polished, shined shoes, people are going to respect you more than if they’re all scuffed up.

Page 13: take charge - goals book

You also want to make sure that your shirts are crisp, your pants are crisp, and your suitsare well pressed. There’s nothing worse than seeing an entertainer come out who’s got awrinkled shirt or who’s got a stain on it or the suit is just all crumpled up.

Remember, you need to project the image that you are successful. Like it or not, peopledo judge you on the way you look.

I’m not saying that you have to be a model or look like a movie star. What I’m saying isthat you have to look the best that you can look and give the appearance of being successful.

I remember in high school, there was one kid who had a really terrible acne problem, butthis kid was the sharpest dresser in the school. He got dates and was a very, very popular guy. Now, if he had taken the attitude, “Well, I’ve got this terrible acne. I really don’t look that good, therefore I’m not going to dress well,” he would not have had the same kind of popularity thanhe did.

WHAT DO YOUR MARKETING MATERIALS SAY ABOUT YOU?

You also want to make sure that your marketing materials are crisp and new.

I discovered that when someone received my corporate promo package, the materialswere often bent, wrinkled, or crushed. When I put it in the mail they didn’t look like that. So nowI mail my materials a cardboard envelope so they look nice when they arrive.

Before you mail out your marketing materials to anyone, make sure you mail them out toyourself first. Do a mock-up, self-address it, put it in the mail, and see how it looks when it getsto you.

Remember that your marketing materials represent you.

When your prospect opens your materials what are the materials saying about you? Are

the material saying, “This person is a professional who really cares about what they’re doing?”Or are they saying, “This is a person who really doesn’t care about their image, and if they don’tcare about their image and themselves, then they’re certainly not going to care about me and myshow?”

ACCESSORIZE

Little accessories that can elevate you in the eyes of your prospects. Instead of just havinga stack of business cards in your roll-on table or a stack of business cards in your pocket that youtake out, you could do a little presentation by getting a very nice business card holder. You canget engraved metal business card holders, which will lend an air of class and sophistication towhat you do. So when someone asks you for your business card, you reach into your pocket and

you remove this lovely business card holder. You open it up and you present them with abusiness card.

Everything you do has an impact on your prospect. If you just reach in your pocket, remove out a crumpled business card, flatten it out and hand it to them, they’re not going to haveas much respect for you or your business card. When you treat your props and your marketingmaterials with respect, people also treat them with respect. The perceived value of what you’redoing increases.

So this month, I really recommend that you go through and you look at everything thatyou’re doing in regard to your show. Look at your props, look at your marketing materials, lookat how you’re presenting yourself, and see if there are any areas where you’re lacking, whereyou’re not crisp and clean.

Get Organized, Stay Organized, And

Accomplish More

As you know, I have a LOT of different projects going. To be honest with you, I startedto get a little overwhelmed. I couldn’t keep focused on any one thing so nothing was gettingaccomplished.

Then, I discovered the power of “story boarding”.

Movie, television, and commercial directors use the technique of story boarding beforethey even step foot on to a set. Basically, a storyboard graphically shows the director the order ofthe shots and scenes. It is, in essence, the director’s action plan.

As much as I like to, I can’t take credit for adapting this strategy for business. Mike

Vance, a former TOP executive at Disney, has an entire course on this one subject. With thatbeing said, here’s exactly how I adapted the story boarding technique to our business…

What you need

•  A cork board for each project you are working on•  Push pins•  3 X 5 colored index cards

You can get all those materials at any office supply store for under $20.00.

What to do

1.  Cut the index cards in half.

2. Write the name of the project or goal on a piece of paper along with the estimated completiondate. Attach this to the bottom of the board with a pushpin.

2.  Using your computer, print the words “DO”, “DOING”, “DONE” on a piece of paper. Cutthese words out and tape or push pin them to the top of the board, evenly spaced apart to createthree columns.

3.  Take the index cards and just start writing down all the action steps you are going to have totake in order to accomplish your goal or complete your project. Don’t worry about writing themin any special order at this point. Just start brainstorming.

4.  Take your written out index cards and put them in order of what has to be done first, whathas to be done second, etc. in order for your to get your project done.

Page 16: take charge - goals book

6. Under the column marked “DO”, attach the index cards with a push pin in a straight line goingdown starting with what you have to do first, second, third, etc.

7. Put your story board up on a wall in your office where you can see it.

You now have a visual representation of what needs to get done and in what order you need toget it done.

When you start working on one of the items listed on the index card, move that indexcard to the column under the heading of “DOING”. When you finish that action item, move theindex card to the heading marked “DONE”.

The story board technique helps you stay on track and focused by graphically showingyou what needs to get done and the progress you’re making. It also helps you not to forgetimportant items you need to get done.

Give it a try, it will really help your productivity and help you make more money.

“The less I do, the more money I make.”

That quote comes from real estate and infomarketing tycoon Ron LeGrand. Ron’s pointis the less time he spends doing things that really don’t matter, the more time he has to spend on

things that do matter. The key word is “delegate”. You need to farm out tasks that do notcontribute directly to your income. Technology and other people can help us do that.

I started farming out a lot of the work I used to do. For example, I used to sit in my officeand run envelopes through my printer so I could do personalized mailings. Then I would printthe letters, fold them, put them in the envelope, seal the envelope, stamp them, and bring them tothe post office..

What a slow, unproductive process. It got so tedious that I didn’t have the willpower tostick to my system. I would dread having to do this manual labor and then start slacking off.“Instead of doing 200 envelopes today, I’ll do 150.” Then, “Instead of mailing 150 letters, I’ll

mail 100.” This continued until I wasn’t mailing any letters at all! My lack of effort quicklyshowed up in my bottom line.

Now, instead of stuffing, sealing, and stamping envelopes, I farm it out to someone else. Ipay about 90 dollars to have 500 sales letter packages stuffed, addressed, stamped, sealed anddelivered to the post office. With this system, not only does the job get done faster, it actuallygets done!

Better results with less effort!

You want to pay people to do things you’re not good at or are not worth your time to do.Yes, you’ll be paying out some money BUT if you spend your time doing things that areproductive you will notice a major increase in your profits.

How To Determine How Much Your

Time Is Worth

Most people don’t have a clue. They’ve never even thought about it. Below is a chartthat shows how much every hour of your time has to be worth in order for you to reach a certainincome level. Check it out:

There are two ways to use this chart to increase your income. First, determine what yourcurrent yearly income is and the corresponding hourly rate. Then do not engage in any activitiesthat you can pay someone else less per hour to do. Second, determine what income level youdesire to reach and only engage in activities that are worth the hourly rate.

Yearly Income  Weekly Pay  Hourly Rate

$25,000 $481.00 $12.00

$30,000 $577.00 $14.42

$35,000 $677.00 $16.83

$40,000 $769.00 $19.23

$50,000 $962.00 $24.03

$60,000 $1,154.00 $28.85

$70,000 $1,346.00 $33.65

$80,000 $1,538.00 $38.46

$100,000 $1,923.00 $48.08

$125,000 $2,404.00 $60.09

$150,000 $2,885.00 $72.12

For example, let’s say you’re earning $50,000 a year. That comes out to $24.03 per hour. You discover it takes you four hours to do a lead generation mailing. You multiply 4 hours byyour hourly rate of $24.03 and get $96.12. If you can find someone to do the mailing for lessthan $96.12, you should have them do it. Does this make sense? This exercise was a real eye-opener for me. Don’t just pass it over lightly. Really consider the implications.

How To Find The Time To Be Successful

Many of my customers have asked me how I find the time to do shows, create newproducts, write my newsletter, do other

non-magic related products, do seminars, and market myself.

There are literally hundreds of books written on time management. Some of them good, others downright awful. The idea here is not to give you a whole dissertation on how to manageyour time but rather give you some down and dirty shortcuts to at least managing the marketingaspects of your business that will help you make more money as a magician and relieve a wholebunch of stress.

1. Get organized! This is by far my biggest challenge. If you have to run around to find yoursales letters, one sheeters, brochures, etc. every time a prospect requests a promo package, you’regoing to be in trouble! Keep all your marketing materials neatly stored or filed away in logical

groups. For example, if you do kid shows and corporate shows, keep all the kids stuff organizedin one area and the corporate stuff in another area.

2. Make sure you have all the supplies you need at the beginning of the week. There’snothing more frustrating than getting a hot lead, wanting to mail them right away, only todiscover that you have to go to the office supply store because you’re out of the right sizeenvelopes. Take a quick inventory of your supplies on a weekly basis so you can make oneshopping trip.

3. Schedule the same day(s) each week that you are going to do your mailings. At the bootcamp someone asked me how to keep track of when you need to do mailings. My method is veryunsophisticated but it works! Very simply, I go to my databases on Tuesdays and Thursdays ofeach week and see who needs to get mailed for that week and prepare the mailings. I don’t worryabout follow-up mailing any other time during the week. Tuesdays and Thursdays are mymailing days, period.

4. Know exactly what your outcome is and have a plan. This is the key to the whole thing! Ifyou don’t have a business plan, a marketing calendar, goals, and action plans, it’s like driving inan unfamiliar city without a map. You may make good time but not no where you’re going!

5. Don’t plan so much that you get frustrated or overwhelmed. I make this mistake quite abit. You think about all you want to accomplish and you get the feeling of being overwhelmedwhich often leads to you doing nothing! Break things down into bite size chunks that you can doconsistently.

Conclusion

I used to think that all that “personal development stuff” was a waste of time. And in somerespects it can be, if you focus all your attention on personal development on not enough

attention on taking action.

You see, pumping yourself up and artificially motivating yourself by walking across a bed of hotcoals or repeating affirmations over and over again will NOT change your life.

Taking continuous ACTION is what will change your life and the RESULTS you get from theseACTIONS will really motivated and keep you fired up for the long term.

Now, even though that is very true, you do need to work on yourself so you can become the kindof person who can reach the goals you set for yourself.

You need BOTH. You need to take MASSIVE ACTION and  work on personal development. The combination of the two will help you live the life of your dreams.

To your success,
