Understanding Network Security

Objectives: Upon completion of this project you will be able to:1. Create an Inbound Rule in the Microsoft Firewall.2. Download and install Microsoft Network Monitor.

Equipment: 1. Desktop or Laptop computer with Windows 7.x/8.x/10.x installed.2. Reliable high speed connection to the Internet.

Before starting this Lab read and study lesson 4 on Authentication and Authorization.

Procedure #2: Create an Inbound Rule in Windows Firewall:Use Windows 7.x / 8.x / 10.x to create a Windows Firewall inbound rule that allows Internet Explorer to communicate over ports 80 and 443. Below is a short video on “How-to create a Windows Firewall Inbound rule.” Double click on the icon to view the steps.

After you have viewed the video, create an inbound rule for ports 80 and 443 in Windows Firewall. Copy and paste the results in the space below.

Procedure #3: Download and Install Microsoft Network MonitorMicrosoft Network Monitor (sometimes called a packet sniffer) is a free tool that can be used to analyze network packets. When you analyze packets you should be able to identify the four main parts that make up a packet.

1. The short video below demonstrates the procedure for connecting to a Virtual Machine (2008 Server.) To watch this video, double click on the icon below. (If you have performed this procedure in the past you may skip watching this video.)
