All Salutation is due to Allah and all Prayer and everything pure. Peace be upon thee, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings; and peace be on us and on all righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.

Islam and Current Events Paris Attacks, 2015

On 13 November 2015, a series of violent attacks in the city of Paris in France claimed 130 lives. The militant organization named ISIS took responsibility of the attacks, claiming the attacks were in retaliation of French attacks on their targets in Syria1. As ISIS calls itself the “Islamic State” and has been justifying their cruel and violent acts as “responsibility” of Muslims, there has been a huge backlash against Muslims in the US and elsewhere.

Response from the Khalifa of Islam

During his weekly Friday Sermon, delivered from the Baitul Futuh Mosque in London, Khalifatul Masih V (May Allah strengthen his hands) said that the attacks had nothing to do with the true teachings of Islam. He condemned this cruelty and said that the perpetrators and anyone found to be involved should be punished in accordance with the law.

“The perpetrators of this brutal attack may seek to justify their acts in the name of Islam and its Holy Founder (peace be upon him) but their acts have no relation whatsoever to the true teachings of Islam. Nowhere does Islam permit taking the law into one’s own hands or to injure or murder anyone. Yet these so-called Muslims and Muslim groups still do not abstain from such cruelties and atrocities.”

“Today, it is the task of the members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community to pray for peace and to pray that all parties desist from every form of cruelty or injustice.”

He also said it was the responsibility of Ahmadi Muslims to spread Islam’s true teachings throughout the world and to pray for peace2

Does Islam allow fighting non-Muslims?

Permission to fight is given to those against whom war is made, because they have been wronged—and Allah indeed has power to help them— Those who have been driven out from their homes unjustly only because they said, ‘Our Lord is Allah’—And if Allah did not repel some men by means of others, there would surely have been pulled down cloisters and churches and synagogues and mosques, wherein the name of Allah is oft commemorated. And Allah will surely help one who helps Him. Allah is indeed Powerful, Mighty— (al-Hajj, 22:40–41)

God says that if permission had not been given for defense then the peace of society would have been destroyed. Even today, any sane person, irrespective of his or her religion, would say that the rationale is indeed valid. The first reason is that if someone is attacked, he has the right to defend himself. Secondly, if as a result of tyranny, people are forced to migrate or they are driven out of their homes unjustly and even then they are hounded and are not allowed to live in peace in a state governed by them, then it is quite reasonable that they be allowed to retaliate for the injury caused to them. Thirdly, oppressors do not confine themselves to their first targets. Indeed, their greed does and will continue to increase. Not caring about who belongs to what religion, they will try to segregate everyone. So, enough is enough. Thus it becomes important to nip this evil in the bud. In order to arrest the cruelty contained thereby. So, this permission for war was for defense and for security. 3

So it is clear that it is not allowed for Muslims to take up a fight, not to save people who are being oppressed for their belief in God. And it is a duty of Muslims to do so, in order to save not just Mosques, but Churches and Synagogues and all such places of worship.

What is Jihad

Jihad is commonly known as Religious War and is often a frightening word. One would picture a Muslim with a sword killing all non-Muslims crying “Allahu Akbar”. But as Ahmadi Muslims, we have the responsibility to understand the true Jihad and to educate fellow Muslim and non-Muslims about the real and true Jihad, because one of the tasks of Promised Messiah (as) is to clarify the concept of Jihad.

I have come to you with an order: jihad with the sword has ended from this time forward, but the jihad of purifying your souls must continue. I do not say this of my own accord. This is indeed the will of God. Recall the hadith from Sahih al-Bukhari which honours the Promised Messiah by saying yada-‘ulharb. That is to say, when the Messiah comes he will put an end to religious wars. (Government Angreizi aur jihad, p. 15) The second principle for which I have been appointed is the reform of the incorrect concept of jihad that is widespread among some ignorant Muslims. So God has made me understand that the prevailing concept of jihad is opposed to the Qur’anic teachings. Fighting commanded in the Holy Qur’an, was more sensible than the fighting of Mosesas, and possessed greater attraction than the warring of Joshua. It was based on the fact that those who took up swords unjustly, murdered Muslims without cause, and took oppression to extremes, be killed by the sword. (Tohfah-e-Qaisariyyah, p. 10)

Explaining this further, Khalifatul Masih V (aba) further states

In the developed world of our time, everybody has the right to practice, to preach and to profess his faith. In other words, the conditions for war that I had mentioned do not exist, then what is the uproar about Jihad? I therefore want to explain the kind of Jihad our community believes in, in the present age. More than a hundred years ago, in response to an objection related to Jihad, the founder of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community stated a critic has mentioned the Jihad found in

Islam and thinks that the Quran incites to Holy War unconditionally. There cannot be a bigger fabrication. The Quran only permits fighting against those who prevent the people of God from believing and entering His religion and from abiding by God’s commandments and from worshipping Him. God permits fighting against those who fight Muslims without reason and who drive believers from their homes and from their lands and who force God’s creation to enter into their religion and who want to annihilate the religion of Islam and prevent persons from becoming Muslims. Then Promised Messiah (as) says, “Islam says the fact of the matter is that the government (he is mentioning the British Government) does not interfere with the religion of Islam and religious customs, nor does it use the sword to promote their religion, according to the teachings of the Holy Quran, it is unlawful to fight against such a government because it does not engage in any religious war"

How can you be a Mujahid?

As an Ahmadi Muslim, these events just show the vast ground you need to cover. As someone who has accepted the Promised Messiah (as) you have the responsibility to educate all Muslims about the true religion of Islam they should practice as well as demonstrate by your own talk and walk what the religion of Islam is about. The Promised Messiah (as) states

“I have been sent at this time to save Islam from the attacks of the false religions, and to present the powerful arguments for the truthfulness of Islam. I certainly say that Islam will be victorious, and its signs have already appeared. This is true that no sword or gun is required for this victory, and neither God has sent me with weapons. Anyone who thinks like this is an unwise friend of Islam. The purpose of religion is to conquer hearts, and it cannot be done with the sword. As so many times, I have shown that the sword picked up by the Holy Prophet (saw) was only for the sake of self-protection and self-defense, and it was done only when the atrocities of the opponents and the deniers had exceeded all limits, and the earth had turned red with the blood of the poor Muslims. In essence, the reason for my arrival is the victory of Islam on other religions.”

Islamic Terrorism?

This is a common word we hear every day in the media. For all acts of terror, done by someone who claims to be Muslims, come under this umbrella and all Muslims are indebted to the wounds created by such terror. How much of the terror acts are in fact connected to the religion of Islam? How a wonderful religion that declared universal freedom of faith can be under attack this way?
