Dr. Magruder responded, sta t ing that he hoped he could live up to th e highstandard of the int roduction.

In the absence of the Treasur er, Mr. Cla rence W illiam McCormick, theChiefta in called on Miss Amy Belle Hunter , assistan t to the treasurer , to read theTreasur er ' s report. ( Repo rt attac hed) .

T he Chiefta in, in his efforts to arouse interest in the Endowment Fund, toldus that he had wr itte n 50 lett er s to "50 selected members of the Clan", but thatthe response had not been heartening. Seve ra l donat ions were made during theGathering : Mr s. Fletch er Cole, in memor y of her fath er , Brig. Gen. MarshallMagruder, gave $25.00 ; Mr. Wm . B. Hamilton Magruder sent $50.00 ; Miss AnnaLouise Reyno lds gave $100.00. These gifts ar e reflected in th e Treasurer' s Report.

Miss Hill made a motion that we accept the Treasurer's Report, which wasseconded by Dr. R. Gregor y Magruder , voted on and approved.

Th e problem of space for the housing of the Clan Record s and space wherework could be carried on came up for discussion. The space now occupied in th ebasement room in the Apartment H ouse at 27th & Cathedra l Avenue, owned byand loaned to the Clan by Mrs. Es ther Pitts Prevish, has not proven satisfactory ,and it has now developed that they must be moved. Mrs. va n den Berg and Mis sH ill offered a room in their apartment as an Office at a renta l charge of forty-fivedollar s ($45.00) per month , makin g a total of $540 per year. There is room forthe Archives and Records in thi s Apartment . The question upperm ost in the mindof each one pr esent was "wh ere will we get the money ?" Discussion followed.

In order to help meet the cost of the rental of th is room to house the Archivesand Records and to serve as an Office of thi s Soc iety, Mrs. Rex Hays Rhodes madethe following motion :

I. That the member ship dues of women be incre ased fr om $4.00 to $5.00 toequal the amount of dues paid by the men. This was seconded by Miss CorneliaBowie, voted on and approved.

II. Miss Cornelia M. Bowie made a motion that all new members of theClan (j oinin g after thi s meetin g) pay an "Initiat ion F ee" of three dol1ars ($3.00),and thi s money be add ed to the General Funds. This was seconded by Mrs. RexHays Rh oades, voted on and approved.

Th e above Recommendations, Nos. I and II, necessitat e changes in Rule IVof the " Rules of the Clan".

T herefore, change Rul e IV, DUES, Section I, by substituting in the secondline after the wor d "pay", the amount of $5.00, the section to read: "Each malevoting member shall pay $5.00 per year dues; each voting female member shal1 pay$5.00 per year dues".

Add to Rule IV a new section, to be Section No.5, to read: "There shal1 bean Initiati on Fee of $3.00".

III. Miss Corne lia Bowie inform ed us at our last meeting of the CouncilMember s she was quit e sure exhibit space could be obtained in the Calvert Mansionfor the Ameri can Clan Gregor Society as she had already prelim inarily exploredthe possibilities of having a memorial exhibit to ALEXA ND ER MAGRUDER,Immigrant , placed in the H eadquarters of the Prince George's County HistoricalSociety at the Calvert Man sion, Riverdale, Mar yland . Miss Bowie was asked tocontinue her exploration in thi s connection at th e proper time.

It was moved by Miss H ill that Miss Cornelia M. Bowie tentati vely reservespace at the Calvert Mansion in Riverdale, Maryland, to house the Archives, consisting of the Records and Genealogical Data on members. This was secondedby Dr. Roger Gregor y Magruder , voted on and app roved.

Miss H ill stated that as a par t of the celebrati on of the "Fiftieth Ann iversa ryof the Fo unding of the Am erican Clan Grego r Society" , it is the hope of thecommitt ee in char ge to pur chase a suitable case in which to keep the Clan Gr egorMemorial s when placed in the Calvert Man sion. Miss Bowie said that if thi swere done, she would contribute $100.

T he Chieftai n read a letter fr om Major U. S. Grant, 3rd, in which he sentregr ets that he would be unable to accept the invitation to the 1957 Clan Banqu et,and extending greetings fro m the Columbia H istor ical Socie ty and himself to tho seatte nding.

JOANNE WOODWARD

A Descendant of A lexander Magruder

Joanne W oodward, who arrived for the Academy Awards last week in a homemade dr ess and went home with an "O scar", rejoices over her big honor withact or husband Paul Newm an. J oann e was nam ed filmdom' s best actress of theyear 1957 for her schizophrenic per sonalit y in the "T hree Faces of Eve", herfirst maj or screen roll and her third motion picture. She said she has been "waitingfor thi s moment since I was nine years old".

J oann e Woodward was nine years old when she definitely decided to becomea movie sta r. No fly-by-night decision, it was one she had pondered fr om thetime of her first public recitation, a debut brought on by chicken pox. The applausewh ich greeted her initial performance kindl ed th e first sparks of stag e fever . Now24 years later, Joan stands in the midst of a conflagration of excitement andacclaim up to her lovely ears in honor s, adj ective s and awards.

T op-ranki ng honor was her winning the Academy Award as the year's bestactress. The H olly wood Fore ign Press Association, the National Board of Review sand the General F eder ati on of W omen' s Clubs ar e amon g the many importantgr oups which have voted her the finest actress of 1957, and a host of top dramacritics and columni sts have enthusiast ically echoed their verdict.

Ju st a littl e more than a yea r ago Joann e Woodwa rd was vir tually unknownto the public, a young Southern girl with 'a movie contract and a burning desireto act. Th en suddenly it happened. And when it did, Joanne was so fr ightenedshe almost didn' t go through with it. "The studio sent for me," she said. "T heysent a script and said at last they had a role for me. I didn' t read the script 'tillI was on the tr ain . Wh en I did, I nearly decided to tell them I couldn't do it .It's hard enough to play one leading character in a picture, but to play three toprolls-I almost backed out l" Th at she didn' t the moviegoing public is gratefullyawar e.

Joanne Woodwa rd was born February 27, 1930, in Th omasville, a wa rm,leisur ely town in southern Georgia. H er birthda te is important to Joanne, forshe's a firm believer in astrology, palmist ry-"name a superstit ion," she confesses,"and I'v e got it." H er par ent s ar e Wade W oodwar d, now vice president of CharlesScribner's New York Publisher s, and Elinor T rimmier , a tiny, lovely lady ofF rench parentage who has been a Southe rn belle. T heir son, Wade Ir., is fiveyears older than Joanne.

Alm ost from the time she learned to talk , Joann e understudied her olderbrother. She often accompanied him to school where she studied his courses ,usually while sitt ing on th e teacher 's desk, an early , if inform al, app roach toeducation, which doubtl ess aided by th e fact that at the time their fath er wassuperintendent of th e school. T hus it happened that when Wade Junior brokeout with chicken pox on th e eve of a Visitor's Day P rog ram, Joanne, his smallbut fa ithf ul unde rstud y, stepped into his role and delivered his recitati on, an actwhich pr oved to be prophetic of her career. Joanne recited "The Wreck of Th eH esperu s" . The thr ee-year -old took an encor e and repea ted the same immortallines. Not unt il the " Hes perus" was going down for the third time did her mothermanage to yank her off the stage. Joanne W oodward had tasted drama, felt thespotlight's warmth and the heady tonic of applause. H encef ort h th ey would be asessentia l to her life as sunlight and oxygen.

But between the littl e Georgia schoolhouse and the glamor of a H ollywoodpremiere, a lot of hard knocks lay in wait for her. In the meantime she was justa sweet littl e Georgia girl, doing the things all littl e girls liked to do. She andth e other childre n stage d many dramas on her fro nt porch, she taking the leadin all of them. Th e audience were "pulled off the sidewalk at five cents admission" . "T hat is how I earned the money to buy my first sheet music." Shelearn ed to sew at an early age and she made the dress she was wearing when shereceived her "Oscar". H er almost sublime self-assu rance sustained its first blowwhen she failed to win a local Shirley Temple contest, edged out despite thespecial costume her mother made her , by a curly-top ped, be-dimpled blonde. Sherefu sed to be solaced with second prize, a dozen loaves of bread- "Six white, sixwhole wheat; a baker y sponsored the contest," Joann e exp lained. "The dimplesbeat me," she confided that night to her mirror , "I' m not a second Sh irley T emple l"W hereupon she resolved never again to try to be a second anybody. She would beher self , and ther eby crea te an enti rely new screen per sonality, an origi nal, one-ofa-kind actress, named Joann e W oodward . How many six -yea r-o lds grow up tosee their resoluti ons so well fulfilled ?

At ten Joanne was graduated fr om the front -porch school of drama to aser ies of varied roles in school plays and the Children's Litt le Th eater in Mar iett a,

Georgia. Sh e was fourteen when the \Voodwards moved to Gr eenville, S. c., andJ oanne met a man who was to change her entire outlook, and her life. This manwas Robert McLancc, head of the Gree nville H igh School dramatics departmen tin the local Little Theater. McLance saw in Joann e a talent groping for expression.H e taught her that acting was more than a mean s of escape, a method of attractingatte ntion. H e taught her that it was a cre at ive th ing, an end in itself , and heset her feet on the pathway to a car eer. "I'll alw ays be gra tef ul to Mr. McLa nce.I' ll never forget his pati ence, his knowledge and his unde rstanding ," says J oanne. She was now playing in the high -school plays and in the Littl e Theater.

H er parents wer e divorc ed when J oann e was sixteen. Devoted to both, itwas a blow to J oann e who remained with her father in Gr eenvill e. H er lastGreenville appearance was in the Little Theater pr oduction of "the GrassMenager ie." He r portrayal of the crippled daughter won her th e local "Oscar"for the years' finest perform ance.

From Loui siana St ate Univers ity J oann e went to New York with her father. After many months he told her that if she want ed to stay in New York and continue her career, he would cont inue her $60 monthly allowance, but oth erwise shewould be on her own. "You call live in New York on $60 a month, but I do notrecommend it," she says. Fina lly she was accepted by the N eighborhood P layhouseDr amati c School, noted training ground for young act ors. When she won outover 100 girls tested for a role in " Pe nny" a Robert Mont gomery TV presentation, everyone concerned was delight ed with her TV debut . She couldn't believe itwhen she received a check for $300 for her performance. "Broke as I was," shesays , " I kep t that check ar ound for two weeks, just to look at , bef ore I cashed it ."

Later she found herself getting int erested in anoth er understudy in the play" Picnic," Paul Newman, a hand some young Yale graduate, like J oan, exci tedabout his first chance on Broadway. When she discovered tha t she and PaulNewm an wer e becoming int erested in each ot her she fled and finally went toH ollywood. Paul al so went to Hollywood, but their path s seemed always to runin opposite dire ction s, when she was working in the Ea st he would be in theWest, etc. At last she played in "The Long H ot Summ er" opposite of all actors ,Paul Newman. Their roles in the picture completed, Jo ann e went to New Yo rkand Paul to Mexico. But after work ing weeks togeth er, thi s separation provedto both , at long last, the inevitabilit y of what they had been fighting. Therefore,on January 29, 1958, in La s Vegas, Neva da, Joann e Woodward became Mrs.P aul Newman. The quiet ceremony was followed by a European honeymo on,a first trip for both. She bough t three hats. She could not remember when shehad worn a hat and Paul had never seen her in one. She also bought "my firs tfur coat I got black Alaskan seal instead of mink-just to be diff erent. I wouldnot have bought a fur coa t, but everyo ne who had been to London in th e wintersaid I had to have one. Not especially to wea r outside, but to put on my bed atnight to keep warm in tho se conservatively heated, ai ry London H otels." TheNewrna ns do not intend to live exclusively in California. The stage and T Vdemand some time in New York. "We are going to take time out to find a spaciousNew York Apartment to keep for the rest of our lives. I t must have three orfour bedrooms, be in a quiet section of the city near a park. You see, we planto have fou r children. They must have a proper home," she says.

In Colonial days, a "tavern" was far fr om being what many tavern s are today.Tavern s not only supplied rest and refreshment for weary traveler s, but some ofthem were the gathering places of the high and mig hty of the land who met therefor sociability, banquets and balls, The Ra leigh T avern in Williamsburg andGadsby's Tavern in Alexandria are exa mples of th e elegance to be expected inimportant towns.

Suter' s T avern (o r "T he Fountain Inn ") in Georgetown was the gatheringplace fo r society; it belongs to Montgomery County' s past since Georgetown was inMontgomery County until 1791.

In country settlements were locat ed less pretentious taverns and "o rdinaries,"located where important roads crossed, or a day's or half-day's journey from animportant town such as Georgetown or Frederick. SUTER'S TAVERN

By COR NEL IU S W. HEI N E

Chief, Pu blic Use Branch, N atio nal Capitol Parks

In 1783, J ohn Suter opened the doors of the "Fountain In n" in Georgetown.H ere the best in food, drink, lodging and ent ertainment was enjoyed under thedire ction of thi s genial host from Sco tland. Hi s tav ern soon became the favoriterende zvous of local citi zens and personalities of nati ona l import ance for bothpleasur e and business.

Th e T avern became mor e than a mere house of enter tainment. It serve dregularl y as the official meeting place for th e P otomack Cana l Company, theGeorgetown Bridge Company, the Commissioners of Georgetown, and othe r business and municip al organizations. George Washington, in the years prior to anddurin g his P residency, often made the inn of J ohn Suter his "official headquarter s"when stopping in Georgetown. Thomas J effer son, likewise, was a regu lar pat ronof Sut er' s. While Mini ster to France, he declared : "No man on the Atlan ticCoast can br ing out a better bottl e of Madeira or Sher ry than old Sut er."

Of far grea ter significance, Suter's Tavern may well be called the bir thplaceof the Nati on' s Capital, for it was th ere that the agr eement betwe en PresidentGeorge W ashington and the original propri etor s of th e lands selected for th eNational Capital was signed. There Maj or Pi erre Cha rl es L'Enfant painstakinglytoi led over and completed his original plan of the Federal City. There, a lso, thethre e Federal Commiss ioners , appointed by President Washington in 1791, es-

tablished their office, from which they directed the public building program and thegenera l development of the new Capita l. In the days when the tavern of J ohnSuter boasted a distinguished list of regular patrons, including such personagesas George \Vashington, Thomas Jefferson, Pie rre L'Enfant, and Benjamin Stodder t, it was often the scene of events of profound national significance.

Af ter the death of John Sut er in 1794, his widow Sa ra h continued to operatethe illustri ous "Fountain Inn" for one year. Beginning in 1796, however, thehistoric st ructure passed into the hands of others, thereby initiating a period ofsuccessive operation by several different individuals. W ith the passage of theoriginal tavern building from the propri etorship of th e Suter famil y, there was laidthe germ for a seemingly insoluble mystery- "Where was Suter's Tavern locat ed ?"

H ow, it may be asked, could the location of such a famous structure becomelost in the passage of time ? The answer is relat ively simple. In George townduring the days when John Suter opera ted his tavern, it was a custom to omitspecific street addresses. In the myria d references to Suter 's Tavern amid theor iginal correspondence of George Washington, the official record s of the FederalCommiss ioners, the Potomack Cana l Company, Georgetown Board of Alderm en,and newspapers, the simple phrase "Suter 's Tavern " appeared aga in and again. This was all that was needed, for everyone knew where Suter 's was. In fact, itwas so well-known that an address would have been superfluous. H owever , astime passed, the uni form absence of thi s small item, added to the disappearance ofmany or iginal record s of Georgetown, provided the great challenge to local historians. T he fact that Suter rented his tavern propert y rath er than owned itmade the task even mor e difficult.

Many historians tri ed to establish the location of Suter's T avern and cameup with as many different answers. Th e writer joined in th e search and hasbeen successful in establishing beyond doubt the cor rect location. Hi s search tookhim through various land record s, tax records, maps, and all othe r likely sourcesof authentic information.

Among this mass of data were a few bits of information which, pieced together, gave the answer. Among these were:

( 1) A Biogr aphy of John Suter written by his descendant Mary D. Sut erwhich had thi s to say:

"I t was in this long, low building at what is now the north west corne r ofW at er and Congress St., that W ashington purchased the site fo r th eCapital. In lat er years it became an Oyster House and restau rant , butin early days it was the last word in "Tavern keeping."The location for Suter's T avern as given by Mary D. Suter cor responds

identically to the present -day northwest corne r of K and 31st Streets in Georgetown and was once a part of orig inal lot # 68 of Peter 's Squar e in old Georgetown.

(2) An unusual photogra ph found among early photogr aphs of George townstructures at the Prints and Photographic Section of the Lib rar y of Congr essshowed a very old building bearing the signs "Oys ters ." It was a rath er lowtwo-story structure with an ample number of rooms. On the back the photographwas labeled "S uter's Tavern ." Vari ous sources indicate that the "Fountain Inn"of John Suter later became the "A nchor T avern and Oyster H ouse" opera ted byGeorge Pitt where in 1808 oyste r suppers could be had for 620 cent s each.

DOWDE N'S ORDI NARY

By R ALP H FRALEY MARTZ

On November 10, 1752, Michael Dowden patented 40 acr es near the head ofWafford's Branch which flows into Little Seneca, on th e old Sinneca Indi an Trail ,and called his patent H all/Iller IJ ill.

Here in 1754 Dowden built a "hotel" of log construction with a shing led roofand many dormer windows. It was in L shape design and contained 17 rooms.

Upon completion of th e building, Dowden pr esented to the Frederick CountyCourt the following petition: To th e Wor ship ful Ju sti ces of Frederick County:T he Peti t ion of Michae l A. Dowden humbl y showeth that your petitioner beingsituated on a public road and having all thin gs necessar y for keeping a publicHouse of Enter ta inment; hum bly pra yeth your W orship s will grant him a licensefor same. T he license was gran ted in August, 1754, and the hotel opened as" Dowden's Ordinary."

Th is estab lishment provided shelter and food for th e traveler . There was abar which stocked plenty of liquid refr eshment for th e weary tr aveler . It al soprovided ente r ta inment and was a sort of socia l club for the people of the locality. Here was the place to gather news. It is hard for us today when newspapers andradio keep us informed of local and world happenings "ever y hour on th e hour"to realize that in early days the only way to ge t news was to have it passed on byword of mouth. Some one heard it f rom someone else who got it at Dowden'sOrdinary f rom a traveler.

Since Dowden's was on one of the most important roads of that day, theGeorgetow n to F rede rick stages stopped at Dowden's twice weekly .

General Edward Braddock staye d at Dowden' s Ordinary while his tr oopscamped on the adjacent hillside in Clarksburg f rom April 15th to April 17th in1755. On the latt er date during a snowstorm many tent s of Braddock's tr oops

were blown down. H e and his troops mar ched into Fredericktown the followingday.

After Michael's death, his son John operated th e old hotel until after theRevolution, when he changed it into a tavern . George Washingt on traveled theGeorgetow n-Frederick Road and passed the old hotel on his way to Frederickin 1791 but did not stop.

Later John Dowden sold the hotel and H ammer H ill to Basil Robert s whooperated it for many years. Th e sign was changed from Dowden's Ordinary toread "Basil Roberts' T avern and Inn ." H e served excellent food and kept a choiceasso rtment of wines and liquors. Many of th e rooms had fireplaces and a steepstairs led to the hal f story above. Th e Ladi es' Sitt ing Room was separate fromthe bar . Among the inter esting furn ishings were a lar ge wall cupboard in thedining room, Robert s' coat -of-arms in th e hallw ay, and an old musket which hungover the fireplace in the dining room.

Th e local militiamen patronized thi s Tavern and here many games of cardswere played and many jigs were danced. A fine ga rden was located adjacentto the Tavern. The stretch of road approaching the tave rn was used as a racetr ack for competiti ve racing by visitor s at the tave rn. It was at this tavern inClarksburg that President Andrew Jackson dined on the way to his Inaugurationin Mar ch, 1829.

In the early part of th e 19th century, Frederick School purchased the propertyand successfully opera ted it fo r many years . Later his son, Jacob School (orShul e) operated thi s same tavern. Th e next owner . was Leonard D. Shaw fromwhom the name "S haw Hill" (now given to the for mer site of the old Tavern)was deriv ed. Shaw later gave up operat ion of the tavern and rent ed the buildingto severa l families who worked on near by farms. Dr. William A. Warfield, theformer chief surgeo n at F reedmen's Hos pita l in Washington, was born in thisbuildin g. It s last occupant was Will Br own and his family.

Th e old hotel was torn down about 1920. A lar ge boulder along Route 355(formerly Route 240) now marks th e site where "Dowden's Ordinary" oncestood in Clarksbur g. Th e Janet Montgomery Chapte r, Daught er s of the AmericanRevoluti on, erected a Memorial along the old Colonial Trail where Gen. EdwardBraddock camped in 1755 on his march fro m Georgetown to Fort Duqu esne.

Hammer Hill is now the property of Mr . and Mr s. Edward H. Deets ofClarksbur g. T he site of the old hotel "Dowden's Ordinary" is now cal1edS haw Hill .

In September, 1957, the Chai rman of th e Research Committee, received atelephone call fro m Mr s. Clara Wright of Alabama, asking for information concern ing the marri age of Sa ra h Magru der and Richard Tubman. She said that herclient , Mr s. Lucian Allen Draper , S r., told her she was a descendant of thi smarriage and that Sa rah Magruder was the daught er of Samuel Magruder (C alled"Sr." ) and his wif e E leanor W ade,

A search of the Clan record s and a car eful reading of the will of Sa muelMagrud er (Called " Sr ." ) did not show that Sa muel Magruder and Eleanor W adehad a daught er Sa ra h. Th e reco rds did show that a Richard Tu bman interm arriedwith Mr s. Sarah Mag ruder by whom he had issue (Land Office, Annapolis, Md. ,Liber N.N. 1725.15, folio 477). Thi s was a Deposition by Mr s. Martha Bayne,Prince Geor ge's County, June 12, 1755.

As Sa ra h was recorded as Mr s. Sarah Magruder, the Archive and Charts ofthe Clan were searche d for a widow of one of the Magr uder men on that particularline, but th ere were none unless she was the widow of one of Samuel's sons forwhom no wife is known.

After th e Resea rch Chairman had anothe r conversation with Mr s. Wright ,Mr s. Wright decided to go to Annapo lis and see what she could find. She founda Deed dated the 8th day of Apri l, 1727. "A t the request of Richard Tubman thefollowing Deed was enrolled the 8th day of April , 1727. T he above will was P robat ed, December 17, 1715.In the Will of Robert Wade, fath er of Eleanor Wade who married Samuel

Magruder (called "Sr." ) which was made January 4, 1713, and probat ed February2nd, 1713, will be found: "I give, devise and bequeath unto my Daughters E linorMagruder and Ann Wade all that tr act of land ca lled and known by the name of"For rest Green" , Hall of Record s, Annapolis, Md., Liber 13, folio 112. H is daughterAnn Wade became the wife of Samuel's brother Alexand er Magruder .

By the above Deed and Will s it has been proven that Sam uel Magru der(ca lled "S r.") born 1687, died 1779, and El eanor Wade his wife, did have anotherdaughter, Sarah, who was not mentioned in Samuel's will which was made J anuary20, 1739 and probat ed February 9, 1779, and recor ded in the H all of Record s, a tAnnapolis, Liber A, folio 81.

The above mentioned record s opens up another Magruder line on the Chartsof the Descendants of Alexander Magruder the Immi grant.

Mr s. Lucian Allen Draper , Sr ., has become a member of the Clan, No. 1278.As she is descended from the marriage of Sarah Mag ruder and Richar d Tubman, through their son Richard, we have their descendants down to Mr s. Draper.

We traveled out into Mon tgomery County, Mar yland, to visit three Ma gruder Beall connected homes.

The first one visited was "Beallmon t", now called "Dawson House" , at 310W est Montgomery Avenue, Rockv ille, Mar yland .

From here with Miss Martha Poole as head guide, "T he Clan Caravan "proceeded to the Oakda le Emory Methodist Church of Brookevi lle, Mar ylan dwhere our Chiefta in, the Rev. This was followed by the Memori al Service to the deceasedmembers of the Clan, condu cted by our Chieftain, and Miss Regina Mag ruder Hill ,ass isted by Mr. Edward Gregor. A s Miss Hill read the name and death date ofthe departed one, Mr. Gre gor ligh ted a candle. Marsha ll Magruder was rea d by the Hi storian, andthe first candl e was light ed for her. (See Memori als.)

'We then went into the social hall, where the ladies of the Women's Societyof Christ ian Service served us a most delicious luncheon. A fte r thi s welcomedrepast, and still seated at our tables, Miss Marth a Poole told us many interestingfacts about "Madi son House" and "Oakley", the other two houses that we wer e tovisit lat er in the afternoon. From the church we went to " Ma dison H ouse" inBrookeville. \Ve did not go into thi s house or the Postoffice as it was raining.

Our last visit was to "Oakley" , one of the oldest houses of log and fram econstruct ion standing and in good condition, in Montgomery County. Mrs. BessieHutton, the owner of "Oakley", welcomed us gladly. After touring th e houseand browsing around through the various rooms, we left reluctantl y for ourplaces of abode.

We visited the Olney Region No.2 of the Federa l Civil Defense Administra tionwhere we saw the elaborate setup of communi cations for alerts in case of disaster .VVe witnessed rescue meth ods where the inj ured were tr apped in part ially destroyed bui ldings.

The hour passed all too quickly, for at 7 :30 we had to be in the Bur gund yRoom for dinner. As we crosse d the lobby to reach it, the Pipe Band prec ededus, playing Scott ish airs; while the guests followed leisur ely into the dinin groom singing as th ey passed along.

After the Chiefta in and his guests were seated at the head table, there wa sa specia l salute to them by the Bagpip es bef ore the Gr ace was said. Then cam ethe tr aditi onal piping-in of the ancient-s tyle Scott ish pudding, th e H aggis, and th ebett er -known "fifth" of Scotch. T he Ha ggis was placed on a small table facin gthe Chieftain, as a waite r balanced the Scotch upon his head. At the criticalmoment the gentleman scheduled to give the Address to the H aggis was found tobe absent. J esse Douglas, who was represe nting the Sai nt Andrews Society, stepped manfull y into the breach and atta cked the haggis with his skea n dhu intru e Dougla s style-a masterful job in the face of 100 asso rted MacGregors.

As the dinner got under way the entertainment continued. The Pip e Bandplayed several selectio ns and there were Scottish Dances by Scotch Lassies.

There was no guest speaker. Our Chieftain read the Ab sente e Dinner list, the names of the members who had tr avelled a long distance to be present , andthe name s of all new members who were present .

At th e close of the dinn er all present joined hand s and sang "A uld Lang Syne",A delightful socia l hour followed where guests mingled with each other andbecame acquainted. So the 48th Gathering of the Am eri can Clan Gr egor Societ ycame to an end. F rom reports and comments, it was one of th e best Gatheringswe have ever experi enced.

a man whose family was responsible for the creati on of their institution and whoseown benefactions were even then aiding each one of them.

Th e man who had died at 6 :45 on that rainy, foggy day was Charles H owardCandler .

T hough many of the Emory fami ly did not know or had forgott en it , theUnivers ity itself came into being in 1914 largely because of the effor ts of twomen : Mr . Candler 's father, Asa Griggs Candler , and his uncle, Bishop WarrenAkin Candler . Togeth er the father, founder of the Coca-Cola Company, and theuncle, the leading South ern Methodist clergyman of his day, were chiefly responsible for establishing in Atlanta the new Methodist university with which wasmerged Oxford's litt le Emory College and which took the name of that college asits own.

Asa Candler gave the first sum of $1,000,000 which insured, first, that th epropo sed new univer sity be set up and, secondly, tha t its site be At lanta. Heserved as the first chairman (then called "president") of the University' s Boardfrom its organization on Mar. 31, 1915 until his death on Ma r. 12, 1929. Hi sgifts to the University totaled about $8,000,000.

Charles Howard Candler, who was customar ily addressed by his middle name, followed in many ways in the footsteps of the father he all but wor shiped. Hesucceeded him as president of the Coca- Cola Company and was president fr om thebeginning of Asa G. Candl er, Inc., the great real estate company formed by hisfather and now owned by Emory.

Like M r. Asa Cand ler he devoted long year s of his lif e to the affairs andwelfare of the University and was munificent in his gifts to it. T ogether thefather and son gave Emory some $21,000,000. "11r. H oward's" benefactions werethe largest by any individual or orga nization in the University's history , hisgrea test gift having been that of approx imately half the stock of Asa G. Candler ,Inc. in 1947. That gift, all of it restr icted for endowment purposes, enabled theUniversity shortly thereafter to acquir e complete ownership of the company .

Hi s election on May 31, 1929 to the presidency of the Emory Board has mean tthat the University throughout its history of 43 yea rs has had only two men in thetop tru stee position : Asa Candler and his son, H oward Candler.

As president and chairman of the Board Mr. Howard Cand ler had servedwith and over each of the three presidents the Universi ty has had in its lifetime. From 1929 to May 29, 1942 Mr. Candler headed the Board dur ing the tenur e ofthe Universit y's first pre sident , Dr. Harvey W Cox, who had been selected in 1920by the Board under the leadership of his fath er. From the 1942 date th roug hAugu st of thi s year Mr. Howard Candler was Board chief th roughout the presidencyof Dr. Goodr ich C. White (' 08) ,· now chancellor of the University . And whenDr . Whi te announced last year his intent ion soon to reti re fr om the pres idency,Mr . Candler served as chai rma n of the committ ee which sought out and electedhis successor, Dr. S. Wa lter Martin. At the time of Mr. Cand ler's death P resident Martin had held office just one month.

It was short ly aft er eatin g a hearty breakfast and sitt ing down to read theSunday newspaper on the morning of Sept. 29 that Mr. Candler was seized witha heart attack. After a physician had been summoned to his home and af ter relieffa iled to come, he was taken by ambulance to Emory H ospital early that afternoo n,being admitted at 2 :10 o'clock. Under the car e of members of th e Emo ry U ni-

versity Clinic he was placed in an oxygen tent ; throughout the remainder of thatday and Monday his conditi on remained serious until death came quietly Tu esdaymornin g. He was 78 year s old.

As Mr . Candler lay in his hospital bed he doubtless recalled that his belovedfath er had died in the same hospital, though in another and older section, afterbeing confined there as a patient for three year s.

He could have recalled, too, that it was his fat her who was almost solelyresponsible for the erection of the first units of the hospital plant in Im . Firstand last, Mr . Asa Candler's gifts to th e hospital exceede d $2,000,000. W hen th eoriginal plant was constructed in 1922 Mr. H oward Candler and his sister andthree brother s provided the funds for the building and furnis hing of one of itsunit s, the Lucy Elizabeth Maternity Pavilion, a memorial to their mother (beforeher marriage, Lucy Elizabeth H oward ) .

Mr . Howa rd Candler himself was chairman of the Boar d of T rustees of thehospita l at the time it was built. The hospital, then known as W esley Memorial , hadhad a plant in downtown Atlanta, but in 1920 its tru stees decided to erec t a newplant on the Emory campu s and on Oct. 5 of that year broke ground fo r it. T he\Vesley Memorial trustees, following the opening of the new plant on Dec. II ,1922 voted to transfer it to Emor y as of midnight Dec. 31, 1923. We sley Memor ialdid not cease its separate existence unt il 1925, however , and it was not until adecade later that the name "Wesley Memorial" died out.

As H oward Candler rode to the hospita l by ambulance he passed by or withina short distanc e of numerou s tangible physical evidence of the better thingsEmory has received from his benefactions and from those of his wife. He andMr s. Candler, the former Flora Glenn of Mari ett a and Atla nta, were married onDec. 3, 1903. Through the 54 year s that have passed since that time, she not onlyhas been a devoted and understa nding helpma te but has shared in fuJI measure herhusband's affection for Emory.

A stone's throw fr om the hospital itse lf stands what is now called H arrisH all, the Un iversity's chief dormitory for women, but which was known when itwas erected as the Florence Candl er Ha rri s H ome for Nurses. Mr. HowardCandler was one of the several nephews and nieces of Mrs. W. H. ( FlorenceCand ler) H arris who gave the $180,000 required to build this memorial to herand he presided at its dedicati on ceremony on May 22, 1929. Th e orig inal dormitoryhas been ext ensively enlarged in recent year s.

W hen Charles Howard Candler was born at 170 Ivy Street in Atlanta onDec. 2, 1878, his fath er was a dru ggist who several years later would acquire saleownership of the formula for Coca- Cola, a bevera ge which he would build into anational institution and which would make him a multimillionair e. (Coca-Colafirst was put on th e market in 1886 and Asa Candler bought fuJI right s to it in thespring of 1891, when Howard was 12 years old.)

Wh ile Howar d Candler was still a schoolboy he had helped at chores aroundhis fath er 's littl e Coco-Co la plant. And while he was a student at Oxford he wasassigned by his fath er to ass ist with Coca-Cola sales in that locality. During thesummers the college student also worked at the soft drink factor y.

Mr. Asa Candler always had wanted to be a physician , but for want of moneyhad become a pharmacist instead. H e had the same medical ambitions for hiseldest son, and the son at firs t had them too. Accordi ngly, after receiving his A.B.degr ee from Emory College in 1898, he enro lled in the Atlanta College ofPh ysicians and Surgeons.

In vacat ion peri ods young H oward continued to work for his father 's fastgrowing Coca-Co la Company. Hi s first "official" (paid) connection with it camein 1899, when he received $12.50 a week as a sa lesman and work ed in the MiddleW est and T exas. The followin g year he sold the product on the W est Coast, travelin g as far north as Sea tt le, where he encountered the frenzy of the Kl ondikeGold Rush, and into Canada.

Because he had been in poor health, school authorities sugges ted that he dropout for a year and take some job disassociat ed with the profession of medicin e.The job was alr eady at hand : that of manager of Coca-Cola's New York office.H e took it , and befor e the year was up he became convinced that he would ratherstay with the company than to become a doctor . H e made thi s decision and neverregretted it ; nor , he thought, did his fath er .

From 1901 to 1906 Mr . Candl er served the Coca-Cola Company at tim es inNew York and at times in Atlanta. He spent much of 1904 and 1905 in his nativ ecity, carrying out assignments in connection with the erection th ere of the skyscraping Candl er Buildin g, a venture dear to his fath er's heart. From th e timeof its completion in 1906 until his death 51 yea rs later he had his offices in thatbuildin g.

It was in 1906 that Mr . H oward Candler was elected to his first high officein the Coca-Cola Company, that of vice-pr esident. As such he was in charge ofmanufacturing operations and of a traffic department which he established. Hecontinu ed in the vice-presidency for 10 years , until 1916. F or the next seven yearshe held the highest offices in th e company : the pr esidency, 1916-19 ; the chairmanship of the board of dir ector s, 1919-20 ; and the pre sidency again , 1920-23. Since1923 he had held no office in the company, though he was a member of the boardand of the executive committee from 1919 until he died.

With the death 0 f Mr. Howard Candler there still remain as Emory trusteestwo men bearing the same surname: his son, Charl es H oward Candl er Jr. whowas elected to the Board on October 20, 1947, and his cousin, S. Charl es Candler('1 6-19L ), Madi son businessman and attorney and son of Bishop Candler, electedto membership on May 29, 1942.

One of Mr . Candl er' s outstanding cha racteris tics was his love of and prid ein his family. No "jo iner" or "socializer," he preferred-unless there was someEmory occasion callin g-to remain at home in the evenings at;d on weekends, incompan y with his beloved wife , his children, and his grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. Almost all his fr iends were persons who were also his close associates in business or ill Emory affairs.

In recent years he had been both happy and moved to witn ess the graduationof severa l of his grandchildren f rom Emor y. As each of them received his
