TAFE WESTERN BRAND GUIDELINES2
Welcome to the brand guidelines for TAFE Western.
The strategy behind our brand is to position TAFE Western as the relevant, up-to-date organisation we are.
Our Strategic Directions 2009–2012 state, “TAFE NSW Western Institute is committed to fostering social and economic development by providing innovative and relevant training aligned to job opportunities and community needs.”
Our brand is designed to emphasise this and reinforce that TAFE Western:
· changes peoples’ lives
· provides relevant and up-to-date training aligned to job opportunities and community needs
· contributes to social and economic development in Western NSW
· listens and responds with flexible solutions for individuals and businesses
· is developing e-learning technologies to increase its flexibility and delivery especially to remote locations
· is developing new infrastructure – building, equipment and technology to improve training delivery.
Our aim is to create consistency across all TAFE Western material. Included in this, is how we refer to ourselves. Excluding official correspondence, where we still use our full title, TAFE NSW Western Institute, we now refer to ourselves as TAFE Western. We still operate under the TAFE NSW umbrella, although we now have a unique identity and voice to reflect our unique market.
Please remember, strength, confidence and clarity comes from consistent application of our brand.
If clarification on usage or other applications is required please contact Metro Graphics Group on (02) 9565 5501 [email protected] or TAFE Western Promotion and Media Officer on (02) 6393 5930 [email protected]
INTRoDUCTIoN To TAFE WESTERN
TAFE WESTERN BRAND GUIDELINES 3
There are two visual styles used in all communications for TAFE Western. The TAFE Western brand and the industry specific.
The primary aim of the TAFE Western brand is to inspire people to think about what they want out of life.
The brand visual application comprises of photographs of ‘real’ people overlaid with the beginning of a bold assertion (I want, I dream or I need) followed by a white space (message block).
In generic promotional applications the message block is left unfilled (incomplete message) to encourage the audience to complete the sentence with their own aspirations.
In course specific material it is completed with a handwritten message in the voice of a potential student or business affiliate, creating headlines to suit different applications (complete message).
Overall, this brand demonstrates the progressive, relevant, inspiring and personal attributes of TAFE Western.
The industry specific style has been developed to extend the TAFE Western brand, yet connect with the look of the initial campaign material. This style is based on colour photos of students in their learning environment.
The TAFE Western brand style is for use when promoting TAFE Western as a whole or for use on material relating to a specific course or industry. The industry specific style is only for use on material relating to a specific course or industry.
When creating material relating to a specific course or industry the decision of whether to use the TAFE Western brand style or the industry specific style will depend on what you think is the most effective style for the item. Whether an item will make a bolder a statement by showing the profession or whether an abstract approach would be more inspirational.

ToNE oF voICE
The TAFE Western tone of voice is enthusiastic, engaging and uses contemporary language which is grammatically correct.
Headline messages are conversational; as if written by a potential student or business affiliate. They must be relevant to the material they are used on. A library of sample completed messages has been developed for each faculty and should always be used (see pages 28 and 29).
Body copy is straightforward and easy to understand, but not dull, technical or dry.
If you require a different headline message please contact Metro Graphics Group on (02) 9565 5501 [email protected] or TAFE Western Promotion and Media Officer on (02) 6393 5930 [email protected]

ImAGERy
A library has been developed with a range of hero images (see page 30). These people are the faces of TAFE Western representing the wide range of people from the community, creating characters our target audience can relate to. These photographs have been chosen for their ‘realness’, they are not overly retouched model shots but people who you could run into on campus.
All images are deep-etched, taken front on with the person standing, looking into the camera. They are positive in feel and suit the headlines.
Unless creating material directed towards employers or business affiliates, images are not aligned to any career as they represent the potential student, not one who is already begun their journey.
Images are not black and white but are a CMYK duotone, formula below.
ink 1 Duotone Curve 0:0 100:100 C70 M70 Y60 K80
ink 2 Duotone Curve 0:0 50:65 100:100 C0 M3 Y15 K20
If you require a more career specific hero image please contact Metro Graphics Group on 02 9565 5501 [email protected] or TAFE Western Promotion and Media Officer on (02) 6393 5930 [email protected]

“The most positive aspect of the course for me has been gaining a friendship with my tutee. Helping him to read”
Peer Tutor, Trundle CS 2008
“The satisfaction of watching my tutee grow, seeing her build up her confidence and open up to me. The realisation that I’m helping her and changing her life”
Peer Tutor, Forbes HS 2008
“I am a better reader and my tutor is my friend”
Tutee, Parkes HS 2008
“The best thing about this program has been having the opportunity to be here”
Tutee, Parkes HS 2008
“The main reason for adopting the Peer Tutoring program at Parkes High in 2002 was to achieve improvements in literacy, but this program offers so much more. Some extra benefits we have seen are:• The positive relationships that the tutors and tutees
develop flow into all aspects of the school day. Tutors are positive role models and school leaders, who tutees can turn to for help.
• Organisational skills are developed by the tutors, as well as consolidation of concepts in Key Learning Areas. We have seen real growth in this area.
• Tutees becoming tutors in future years due to their positive experiences.
• Tutors continuing for several years in the program, even after they have achieved their TAFE qualification.
Our program has grown from one group to six, the more tutors we train the more students are improving their literacy skills. This is a vital program fostering so many advantages to our whole school community.”

TAFE WESTERN BRAND GUIDELINES TAFE WESTERN TEMPLATES 53
This is a commercial course designed for secondary or central
schools who would like to run an accredited volunteer Peer
Literacy Tutoring Program within the school.
How does it work?
Volunteer tutors from Years 9–11 receive TAFE training by qualified TAFE
Literacy teachers in literacy strategies to support junior students (Years
7–8) in their reading and understanding of classroom texts.
Tutors work with junior students (tutees) in a set reading timeslot (eg
RATS, DEAR) for a minimum of 15 minutes a day, four days a week.
This fieldwork component is supervised by a school coordinator and
supported by the TAFE Literacy teacher.
Currently eight schools are involved in Peer Literacy Tutoring across
TAFE Western, with 168 tutors enrolled in the TAFE course.
The Qualification
Tutors who complete the theory and fieldwork units, including a nominal
30 hours of actual tutoring, receive the TAFE qualification ‘A Course in
Peer Literacy Tutoring’.
This qualification is highly regarded by employers and supports early
entry university applications. It also attracts credits in related TAFE
courses and priority entry into other TAFE courses.
Benefits
Schools involved in this program have reported improved literacy skills
and educational outcomes for tutees, as well as for the tutors themselves.
The program also improves peer relationships within the school and
develops leadership skills in the tutors. Some schools have also
reported improved attendance for both tutors and tutees.
How can we run a TAFE Peer Tutoring Course at our school?
Contact the TAFE Peer Tutoring Coordinator to find out what is involved
in establishing Peer Tutoring at your school.
Minimum requirements are:
• Whole school support of the program
• A discreet reading timeslot
• A literacy-trained school coordinator
• An assistant coordinator
• Access to authentic classroom texts from across the KLAs
for use as tutoring materials
• A suitable room for the tutoring fieldwork
• A minimum of 5 volunteer tutors from Years 10 or 11
(Year 9 students can be included in Central Schools)
These all need to be in place before the TAFE training begins.
What is the course duration and structure?
The course runs across the school and TAFE academic year.
Training includes:
• A 4 hour Mandatory Initial Training (MIT) session in early Term 1
• Follow-up training sessions throughout the year, as negotiated with
the TAFE Literacy teacher
The Fieldwork program and ongoing tutor assessment runs from after
the MIT session until the end of Term 4.
What will it cost?
An individual quotation will be supplied to your school upon application
to the Peer Tutoring Coordinator. Costs will depend on the TAFE
teaching support model, group numbers and travel requirements.
All new schools are enrolled in the Maximum support model, which
provides 30 hours of TAFE support, training and assessment.
Costs also include TAFE resources, travel (where applicable) and
coordination. Separate staff development sessions can be arranged
for an additional cost.
