Grass Roots Talk

Good Afternoon and welcome to The Grass Roots Stadium for this

Spartan South Midland Premier Division tie.

Today we welcome the players, officials and supporters of Hillingdon

Borough to Tring, we hope they enjoy their short stay with us, and have a

safe trip back afterwards.

We also give a warm welcome to our match officials- Jeff Aldous and his

assistants-Mark Sage & Jack Scott

Today's match is sponsored by one of Vice Presidents and ex-players Pete

Oakley and we would like to thank Pete for his continued generous support.

We hope you all had a great Christmas and New Year. We now look forward

to the second half of the season.

Our guests today are not having the best of seasons so far and at present

are propping up the table. However our game back in September in the

reverse fixture was a close affair when we got the winning goal in the 93rd

minute.

They will be out to gain revenge for that result and to try and move up the

league to safety. It you look at their history, it is a shame to see them in

this position.

We lost again last Saturday by the odd goal at Colney Heath. Always a

difficult place to go to but after some good results against the top sides,

we would have hoped to have got something from that game.

The reserves also lost against Carshalton this time 2-0.

They are now struggling for a result but are putting in some fine

performances against some very good sides.

Tuesday we welcome what have become a bit of a bogey side to us-Holmer

Green, when we will hope to get a result at last after two cup defeats this

season.

To keep up with all our teams results, fixtures and general club news.

History of Tring Athletic: Formed in March 1958 by a group of local men who contributed app. £2,000 towards the cost of the land, fencing,

changing rooms etc .Players, Committee members and friends carried out the work while the team played on another

pitch. Originally formed for youngsters under the age of 21, the team won many trophies in the West Herts. Div. 3

including the Div. 1 title 3 times in 5 years, often playing against adult sides.

The 70’s/80’s The Club went through a lean time and it was decided to scrap the upper age limit. Many former players returned

which resulted in another successful period in the early 1970’s.

Many fine players turned out for the Club and went on to play for professional/senior clubs. In the mid-seventies the

Club nearly folded and the ground was sold to the Council. The reserves were disbanded and the First team dropped

down through the leagues. It was decided to turn to youth again. This formula enabled the Club to work back through

the leagues and by 1986 we were competing in the Premier Div. and the reserves were resurrected.

South Midlands-The 90’s. In 1988 the Club joined The South Midlands and as a result gained Senior status with The Herts. FA

In 1989 we entered in a 3 year ground sharing agreement with Tring Town.

In 1992 the first team moved back to Miswell Lane, where the Reserves had continued to play. The side established

itself in The South Midlands and gained promotion to the newly formed Senior Div.

in 1993. In 1994/5 season, the First Team reached the final of the Senior Div. Cup While the Reserves were finalists

in the Apsley Junior Cup for the second year running.

In 1996/7 after leading the Div. for the whole season, some poor results at the end found us finishing 3rd. We also

reached the semi- final of the Herts. Charity Shield and won the St. Mary’s Cup beating 5 Senior sides including

Isthmian League Hemel Hempstead and Berkhamsted Town In 1997/8 after winning the last 14 games we lost out on

the Title on goal difference of 2. The Reserves won their league by 10 points winning every home game. The following year we won the South Midlands Senior Div. Cup and also The St. Mary’s Cup for the second time,

defeating neighbours Tring Town in the semi-final in front of a crowd of 350, mostly Athletic supporters. In the

league after suffering just one defeat in 28 games, we finished 3rd.

The 1999/2000 season proved to be one to remember. £ 50k was spent on new changing rooms and extending the

Clubhouse and over 1000 people turned up to watch a Watford X1 refereed by Graham Barber and Graham Poll.. We

also formed a third team a Vets side and a Ladies team. The season turned out to be our most successful. Not only

winning the Senior Div. by 11 points, we also reached 5 finals. Winning The Herts. Charity Shield, Herts. Senior

Centenary Trophy and the Cherry Red Books Trophy in it’s inaugural year. We were narrowly beaten 1-0in The Senior

Div. Cup and the reached Final of the St. Mary’s Cup which was never played because of a back log of fixtures.

We were awarded the Houghton Cup for achievements in outside competitions.

The Management team were also voted Managers of the season. We lost only 6 out of 60 games all season. The

Reserves reached the Final of The Intermediate Cup and the A Team finished runners up in the West Herts. Div.

The New Millennium We continued our success into the new one (2000/01) by retaining the Herts. Senior Centenary Trophy (again beating

Wormley Rovers 2-0) and the Cherry Red Books Trophy (Virginia Water 1-0). The Reserves won the League title and a

newly formed B Team claimed the runners-up spot. The following season (2001/02) we won the Herts. Charity Shield

for the 2nd time beating Letchworth 4-1. The A Team reached the Apsley Junior Cup final and the B Team won the

sporting award. Season 2002/03 – More success followed as we capture the Herts. Senior Centenary Trophy for the 3rd time, to

become the first club to do so. We finished 3rd in the table and won the League Cup for the 2nd time, to make 12

major trophies in 7 years. We were also finalists in the Cherry Red Books Trophy. The A Team finished runners up as

did the Under 16's in their first season, the B Team won the sporting award for the 2nd year running and the Ladies

had a great run in the Women's FA Cup. For the 3rd year running Darrel Bodimeade won an award for the best playing

surface, which is just reward for the tremendous job he does for the club.

Page 7: TAFC vs Hillingdon Borough

Season 2003/04 –Following our failure to secure floodlights at Miswell Lane we entered into an historic alliance

with Tring Town to play our first and reserve team football in season 2004/05 at Pendley where lights are already in

place. The main focus was to be to raise the funds needed to build a new Clubhouse, the previous building burnt down

in March 2003. Miswell Lane will be retained and will be used by our A, B, and Ladies sides. This new arrangement

with Tring Town secured senior level football in the town.

Season2004/05 – New season at a new ground in a new division with fantastic facilities. First team finished 6th in

the Premier Division and also won the St Mary's Cup for the 3rd time defeating Hemel Hempstead in the Final. We

were also Runners Up in the South Midlands Floodlit Cup Final losing on penalties to Oxhey Jets. Played in the F A

Vase for the first time.

Season 2005/6 –The Club entered the F A Cup for the 1st time in its history but was defeated in the prelim

round. In a disappointing season the highlight was a victory over Watford in the Herts Senior Trophy with a large

crowd enjoying a 1-0 win. Defeat in this competition came at the hands of Stevenage Borough of the Conference

league

Season 2006/7-The first team finished mid table after a difficult start to the season. Went 3 rounds in the e.on

FA Cup, losing to Kings Lyn, the biggest side in the competition at that time. The events of the year however came

after the season had completed. Mick Eldridge and Ray Brimsom stepped down as first team managers after 17 years.

Ron Brimsom also after 16 years decided to hand over the reigns and our Hon. Secretary Ralph Griffiths also stood

down after 25 years in that position. A wealth of experience which thankfully will not be lost, as they are all staying

on in some capacity.

Season 2007/2008-.The new management team of Phil Casserley and Terry Nightingale ended in glory at The

County Ground, Letchworth, with the First Team lifting The Herts. Charity Shield for the 3rd time.

Season 2008/2009- A reasonable league campaign saw the first team finish in 8th position. However in true Athletic tradition, it was in the cups in which we excelled, reaching 4 semi-finals. After being 4-2 up

with just a few minutes to go, 3 late goals meant the first one slipped away. This strengthened the resolve of the

whole team and in a remarkable last seven days of the season, three trophies were gained. Winning the League

Challenge Trophy and Premier Div. Cup for the first time and also defeating local rivals Leverstock Green to pick up

the St. Mary’s Cup for the 4th time Ex-player, Ben Williams re-joined the club as reserve team manager mid season and will lead the side in the Suburban

League next season.

Season 2009/2010- After last season’s tremendous cup haul, this year the first team finished without a trophy. However they finished third in the league, the highest position the club’s history so far. With the ground getting the

higher ground grading required, the management and players will be hoping to put in a challenge for the title in

2010/2011.

The B Team did pick up some silver ware winning The Stanley Rous Challenge Cup at Hemel Hempstead Town’s ground.

Season 2010/2011- The first team finished runners up in The Premier Division. They also won The St. Mary’s

Cup beating Leverstock Green in the final and reached the final of The Floodlite Cup, losing 2-0 to Royston Town

Season 2011/2012- With a new Management set up and several new faces in the First team, we were pleased to

finish in the top six and reach 3 cup semi-finals. All our sides performed well, with one of our youth sides going

through the league season undefeated. The ladies won their league and reached the final of the County Cup, losing to

Arsenal reserves. SEASON 2012/2013 - Mixed season with the 1st team winning their initial F A Cup tie at Bedfont and then

losing in the next round to Ashford Town after a replay, in the F A Vase we lost at first hurdle to FC Romania. In the

League we finished just below half way, lost on penalties to Hadley in the semi final of the Premier Division Cup and

were finalists in the St Mary's Cup losing to local rivals Berkhamsted. The "A" Team, under Dave Adamson and James

Bevan won the West Herts Peace Memorial Cup for the first time in the Club's history. Unfortunately the Ladies

team withdrew from their league through lack of players. SEASON 2013/2014 -First team had a good run in The FA Vase and finished mid-table. Reserves finished

runners up on goal difference and won promotion to the Premier Division. Club purchased the Free-Hold of the ground

and second pitch to ensure future football in the town.

Hillingdon Borough Football Club - History Founded in 1872 following a meeting of eight local businessmen, Yiewsley F.C. was the forerunner of the modern-day club, changing its name to Hillingdon Borough in 1964 following the formation of the London Borough Councils. The Club flourished in the sixties and seventies with its' main achievements being the FA Trophy Finalists in 1970-71 and the Southern League Runners-up to Cambridge United in 1968-69. The 1984-85 season saw a major downturn in the Club's fortunes with the sale of the Leas Stadium. The original Southern League Club is subject of a recorded history book (1872-1985) by Leigh Edwards , David Shute and Mike Hunter In 1985-86 a merger with Burnham F.C. was not enough to save the Club from extinction and in 1987 the name of Hillingdon was lost completely. A gap of almost four years left the Borough in the wilderness with no ground and no effective leadership or finance. Hillingdon Borough F.C. was re-formed in 1990 when officials of the Chiltonean League side, Bromley Park Rangers, took over the Ruislip F.C. Ground at Breakspear Road and together with four of the former Hillingdon Borough directors, formed the new club - Hillingdon Borough (1990) F.C. The four directors stayed for two seasons and it was then left to the nucleus of Bromley Park Rangers Committee Members to carry on. To help realise the potential of the club, the club purchased the 12 acre site at Middlesex Stadium with a view to developing the site, arena and training facilities A new company, Staravis Ltd., was formed and one of the first major projects was to turn the pitch through 90 degrees to have sufficient space around the pitch and ground to meet the higher league requirements. This involved removing some 50 trees, repositioning 3 of the floodlights, re-draining and relaying the lower half of the pitch. Further work was completed with a concrete wall to surround the Ground. Progress since has been slow and sure. Unfortunately, the infamous red tape problem reared its ugly head, and progress was temporarily halted pending several open enquiries and Council approvals. Finally, the official go ahead was given and The Directors of the Club have worked tirelessly since to push this project forward and raise the necessary finances. The first stage of re-development was completed in November 2004 when the present owner assisted the club by building and launching ‘Astro1’ a state of the art full size Astroturf pitch utilising third generation materials which make it one of the best training facilities in the area. Continued work goes on into progressing the development plans which should include, ground improvements including a new stand and Covered standing terraces, landscaped grounds to house several mini soccer, youth and an additional senior pitch, an extended club house & functions area together with improved car parking and a tree planting scheme will be initiated. The summer of 2005 and 2006 saw work on improvements to the stadium which eventually achieved the ‘D’ grade now required by Level 4 Clubs.

On the football side, the work in the first season in 1990 was towards gaining entry into The London Spartan League which was achieved. Honours for the club were hard to come by, however a purple patch in the late 90’s saw the Club winning the Spartan League Cup in 1997 whilst being runners up in the London Senior Cup a few weeks later. In consecutive seasons of 95/96 and 96/97 Hillingdon Borough was runner up in The Spartan League just missing out on the Championship by the smallest of margins. The Youth Section of the Club was formed in 1990, when four teams broke away from

Page 9: TAFC vs Hillingdon Borough

Alpine F.C. and in later years were joined by teams from Hillingdon Eagles. With the introduction of our Saturday morning Coaching School, the Youth Section has gone from strength to strength with many players progressing through our successful Under 18 set-up to play for the First Team. The amalgamation of The Spartan & South Midland Football League in the late 90’s produced a stronger football League & our first major success was achieved at the end of the 2004/2005 season when the Club defeated London Colney in the Final of the Spartan South Midlands League Challenge Trophy by 4-1 on an excellent night for the club at Hanwell Town FC. This was co-incidentally achieved exactly eight years to the day of their last cup success. Season 2005/06 saw the club go from strength to strength and both teams, the one on the field and the one off the field, ensured a return back up the pyramid to the newly formed Southern League Division One South & West following the successful ground grading, PLUS an unprecedented appearance in the FA Vase Final at St Andrews, Birmingham City FC against Cheshire side Nantwich Town. Although suffering a 3 – 1 defeat, the season will be long remembered for our great cup runs and league campaign, finishing runners up to Oxford City in the League on goal difference and also runners up in the Challenge Trophy and Floodlit Cup. Two years followed in the Southern League South and West Division, culminating in winning the Southern League Cup against Cleveden, in a two legged affair, having already beaten three other Premier Division sides on the way to the final. At the beginning of the 2008/09 season, we lost our sponsor just before the start of the season, and without a budget, we also lost manager Steve Ringrose and virtually all of the players who had given us success. We played Enfield in the Final of the Middlesex Charity Cup, left over from the previous year. With a completely new team we put up a good show before losing in extra time. We were switched to the Ryman League where we struggled to compete. Half way through the season Steve Hale was appointed as First team manager and although he produced a good team it was not enough to stave off relegation, and we returned to the Spartan South Midland League for the 2009/10 season. After the resignation of Steve Hale after a run of disappointing results, John Nolan was appointed manager in mid season, his reign, however was short lived and Gary Meakin, along with Steve Emanuel were drafted in towards the end of the season. They had to draft in a whole new squad of players and managed to stave off relegation with a late run of wins. In the following summer, Hillingdon Borough came within inches of folding entirely when the club Chairman, Gamdoor Dhaliwal resigned and the remaining committee were left leaderless and without a penny. Fortunately Mick Harris, (a local business man and father of Ben Harris who played at Birmingham in the FA Vase final) stepped in and filled the void. Gary Meakin continued as first team manager for the 2010/11 season and started well, although results declined into the winter. With just two months left of last season to play, Meakin left to take the vacant Northwood job and left the club in a world of trouble, having only 8 days left to sign any new players. Steve Hawkins took on the role of caretaker manager and brought Jess Smith to the club as his assistant. The pair did a fantastic job, under very difficult circumstances and Jess Smith was soon after given the opportunity of being the first team manager for the 2011/12 season and finished a respectable 10th place and took the club to its first cup final since 2008. Jesse and Gary unfortunately resigned early on in their second season and Jason O’Conner and football icon winner Sam Hurrell stepped in to fill the position.

TAFC First team 0-1 Sun Sports

EARLY MIX UP PROVES TO BE COSTLY

After taking the scalp of league leaders Kings Langley in the previous game we had the

opportunity to inflict similar damage to 2nd placed Sun Sports title hopes. But a defensive

mix up presented Sun with an early goal and despite valiant efforts to get back on level

terms we couldn't find a way through the visitor's solid defence.

Only 15 miles along the A41 separates our two clubs but despite this geographical

closeness this was the first ever league encounter between us. The visitor's form had

faltered recently with just one win from their last four games but they are one of the

League's highest scorers and were still very much in the hunt for the title so this was a

testing match for our young guns.

It was strange to see Matt Jarvis line up for Sun. Jarvo played 100 First Team games and

scored 8 goals for Athletic and never gave less than 100%. We showed one change from

the team that started against Kings Langley, with Chris Salmon returning after injury in

place of Dan Steadman who was himself injured. There were also two changes on the

bench with the unavailable Kieran Turner replaced by another up and coming youngster 17

year old Rob Tomlin and Sam Joliffe had served his one match ban and took his place

amongst the subs. Despite Chris Salmon's return Stuart Stedman kept the Captain's arm

band.

With the festive season just over it was unfortunate that we should present our guests with

a belated Xmas present after just 97 seconds. A rare misunderstanding amongst our

defenders allowed a simple pass to reach Nathan Pooley who held off a challenge to fire

his side into a very early lead. Score 0-1.

It was a most unfortunate start but undeterred by this set back the players rolled up their

sleeves and competed on an equal footing to our more loftier opponents. Stuart Stedman

collected a cross from Luke Dunstan after a fine move down the right and created space for

a shot, but the prospect of scoring in two consecutive games might have gone to his head

because he fired his shot just over. Sun went even closer in the 18th minute when centre

back Scott Bonner thumped a header from a free kick against the bar.

There was little to choose between the two sides but our visitors probably just had the edge

in terms of possession. They played a very high line and their keeper Ross Hampton had to

race from his goal on several occasions to deny Chris Vardy. Our leading scorer did find

the net in the 34th minute but the goal was disallowed for reasons that were not clear.

Vardy didn't look offside but the Linesman did put his flag up straight away so perhaps it

Page 12: TAFC vs Hillingdon Borough

was for a foul of some sort.

In the 37th minute it was our turn to hit the woodwork. Luke Dunstan and Ollie Hogg

linked up superbly down the right flank with the former finding the head of Vinnie Iannone

with a accurate cross, but unluckily Vinnie's header hit the post and bounced away to

safety.

An even half came to a close but crucially Sun had a one goal lead to hold onto.

Half Time: Tring Athletic 0 Sun Sports 1

We started the second period brightly with Chris Vardy and Stuart Stedman whipping over

great crosses from the left across the Sun area which were crying out for a finishing touch.

Neither keeper had been tested so far but Jack Hopwood got down quickly to save a header

from Ashley Lewis.

Taylor Collins came on for Vinnie Iannone and he was soon in the action, lashing a long

range effort just wide. As the half progressed Sun dropped deeper to protect their slim lead,

relying on break aways to try and catch us out. Jack Hopwood tipped a free kick away

from goal and Stuart Stedman produced a couple of great tackles to stop Ashley and Carl

Penny in their tracks.

We were dominating possession and territory and for the last 15 minutes it was all one way

traffic as we put them under pressure. Sam Joliffe came off the bench as did Rob Tomlin to

make his First Team debut as we tried to shake things up. The players worked their socks

off but couldn't find a way through the brick wall that Sun erected around their area and the

visitors held on for a narrow 1-0 win.

Full Time: Tring Athletic 0 Sun Sports 1

A disappointing result but Julian and Ian will be pleased that their young side competed on

an equal basis with a Team seven places above them in the table and challenging for the

title. In the end it was a unusual error from our normally reliable defence that proved to be

the difference.

TAFC Reserve team 0-2 Carshalton Athletic

On 30 September 1938, British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain triumphly waved an

Anglo-German Agreement declaring "Peace for Our Time" at the Heston Aerodrome. Shortly

afterwards came the bloodiest global conflict of the 20th Century.

In the lead up to the 1976 Test Series, England Captain Tony Greig proudly declared that he

intended to make the West Indies grovel. England slumped to a 3-0 Series Defeat.

Along the same theme, on 10th January 2014 - Tring Athletic Reserve Manager Colin Phillips

surveyed his striking options - with club record scorer Andy Humphreys and Alex Groom

returning, and with Stewart King and Ryan Sturges in the line up - and confidently predicted

goals in their Suburban Premier League clash with Carshalton Athletic. Athletic failed to record

a shot of note all game...

It wasn't for the want of trying. As has been the case all season, Tring grafted, worked hard and

had good shape - but the opposition has been a step above all season. In the first half, Athletic

were shoddy in possession but restricted their opponents to shots from distance. They also

could have had a couple of penalties and could feel hard done by. King surged down the right

and whipped over a cross that Humphreys and Groom agonisingly failed to reach. That was in

Tring's first attack as sloppy play persistently put the lads under needless pressure.

Tring improved - King surged forward again but was hauled down. No penalty.

A free kick was whipped into the box - Smethers was hauled to the floor. No penalty.

With Tring on the ascendancy and piling forward, Ryan Sturges inexplicably underhit a

backward pass to George Tomlin. Green missed his tackle and Grasso could not stop the shot.

Half Time - TAFC Res 0 Carshalton Ath 1

The second half started in the same vein - with Carshalton excellent defence preventing

Humphreys and Green from getting a sniff.

At the other end, a Carshalton free kick was left to beat everyone and was headed back across

the box. 2-0.

To their credit the lads kept on battling, with Caterer making a difference with his direct

running. But no-one could get on the end of his crosses. At the other end, Grasso made a couple

of fine saves to keep Tring in it.

But despite their brave efforts and excellent team spirit it was not to be.

Team - Grasso, Cullimore J, Tomlin G, Salmon D (Cullimore T) , Butler J, Green, Sturges

(Caterer), Smethers, Groom, Humphreys, King (Seaton). Sub not used - Naylor.

Chilfest is back for 2015 UPDATE, Saturday's acts announced today are Billy Ocean (headlining) ABC,

Limahl, Bad Manners, The Real Thing, The Blow Monkeys & Sonia. Tickets

will be on sale from Friday 5th December.

From www.chilfest.co.uk - more details & further line ups to follow

Since announcing back in July that Chilfest would not be returning we have

been overwhelmed by the comments received from so many in support of the

event. We have now had a chance to consider your views and this, combined

with some exciting developments in identifying possible line-ups for a future

event, has led to a re-think on our part.

So we're delighted to announce that Chilfest WILL be returning on Saturday 10

July 2015.

Staging Chilfest has always been about doing good for the local community and

we're also delighted to announce that we have once again chosen Rennie Grove

Hospice Care as our charity. Despite the financial challenges of the last two

years we have donated £20,000 to the charity to help them deliver hospice at

home care and support for people in our local community with cancer and life-

limiting illness.

We'll be posting more details about Chilfest 2015 in the coming weeks on this

page and on our website but please share this announcement with all your

Facebook and non-Facebook friends and help us get the word out there

League

Colney Heath 1-0 TAFC First team

NARROW DEFEAT AT COLNEY

On a blustery day Colney Heath completed the league double

over Athletic following Ben Awads headed goal in the 79th

minute, and by the same scoreline as that in September.

Athletic started the better, kicking down the slope and with the

strong wind in the same direction. In the first minute Taylor

Collins was played in by Ollie Hogg but home keeper Tom

Blackman managed to save with his legs. Athletic won two

corners in quick succession and a half chance fell to Chris Vardy

which sailed past the wrong side of the post.

There then was a period where neither side dominated, both

keepers had little to do, Athletic were looking to play a quick

ball to speedy forwards Chris Vardy and Taylor Collins,

however the strong wind would get behind the ball which would

then go straight through to keeper Tom Blackman or it sailed

harmlessly over the goal line.

In the 32nd minute Colney Heaths full back Ben Crilley found

himself in space and tested Jack Hopwood who saved low

down. Just a minute later Sam Jolliffe hit tremendous half volley

from just outside of the penalty area but keeper Tom Blackman

pulled off an equally good save.

Half Time: Colney Heath 0 Tring Athletic 0

Athletic again started the better winning early corners without

troubling Colney Heaths goal. The home side were seeing a lot

of the ball in midfield but were unable to penetrate Athletics

defence. In the 66th minute Athletic were awarded a free kick

Page 25: TAFC vs Hillingdon Borough

just outside of the area. Taylor Collins stepped up and his goal

bound shot was turned away for a corner by keeper Tom

Blackman.

Colney Heath then had a succession of corners which were

comfortably dealt with by Athletics defenders. Both sides made

substitutions, then Colney Heath scored what proved to be the

winning goal in the 79th

minute. Ollie Butler was unlucky to concede a free kick on the

right side, amazingly the referee even saw it as a yellow card,

this appeared inconsistent with a number of earlier decisions.

From the free kick the ball was floated into Athletics area where

substitute Ben Awad headed into the goal off the underside of

the bar.

Athletic pushed forward looking for an equaliser but the home

side defended well. In the final few minutes Colney Heaths

Andrew Hannon and Danny Payne were yellow carded for late

challenges.

A disappointing result in difficult conditions for Athletic who

were looking to carry on their impressive away record, their next

fixture however comes quickly as they are away again on

Tuesday when they visit London Tigers.

Ampthill Town 1-1 TAFC Youth Team TAFC goals: Jack Blair

Wed 17th December saw Tring’s U18 squad travel to Ampthill for this SCFYL encounter. After 5

weeks of inactivity due to various reasons, the visitors were hoping to maintain their unbeaten

run against the league’s bottom of the table side.

For Tring, the first half performance was a truly forgettable affair. All the good traits in their

game that the squad had built over the past 3 months had disappeared and was replaced by

hurried and naïve football with no composure, and a 4-4-2 formation that did not move

cohesively as a unit.

Ampthill, on the other hand sensed they could get something out of the game and were playing

with a confidence that belied their league position. It came as no surprise when the home side

took the lead. Having won the ball cheaply on the left and evaded a half-hearted tackle, the ball

was delivered into the box and after failure to clear the ball Ampthill gleefully converted from

close range to make it 1-0. They were unlucky not to double their lead when they broke through

again, only to see Tring keeper, Teddy Ashley, make a couple of outstanding saves to keep the

score down to 1-0 at the half-time interval.

Manager Nick Seaton decided to hold a “Phil Brown style” half-time team-talk out on the pitch,

were he left his side in no doubt that the performance thus far was not good enough and that he

was not afraid to make radical changes of personnel within the squad if the performance did not

improve.

The next 45 minutes saw a resurgent Tring. All over the pitch the visitors seemed to be winning

battles they had failed to win in the first half and there was far more thought and urgency in their

overall play. The whole team was now beginning to function as a formation, denying the home

side both space and time and several chances were now being created. Jack Blair was re-

introduced in the second half and his pacey runs were causing problems for the home side’s back

four and it was no surprise when he was on hand to coolly slot home the visitors deserved

equaliser. Several further chances went begging for Tring as they went in search of a winner but

to no avail. The game finished in an honourable draw with both sides believing they could have

won it, if they had only taken their chances.

Tring’s performance could be put down to a number of reasons, the main one being that of “ring

rustiness” from a period of prolonged inactivity. With another 3 week lay-off due to Xmas the

squad will now have to adjust quickly back into match mode in the early New Year as there are a

tough bunch of fixtures waiting for them on their return!
