Another busy term for all schools, starting with Education Week, which commences next week. Owing to Covid, our normal Education Week program will look different from all years past. During Education Week, we will be doing our annual Cross-Country (Covid style), our school photos for 2020 will be happening, and a virtual production showcasing school life at Tacking Point Public School will be posted during the week. A virtual showcase of the school, is being filmed next week and will later be posted onto our website for our community and new enrolments to visit. We welcome Mrs Moritz back from Long Service Leave and thank Mrs Dawes for working with 3/4M. We also welcome back Mr Thompson and Mrs van Klink who are now out of quarantine too. My many thanks to Mr Rob Harris who was relieving Deputy Principal for the first few weeks of Term 3. With school photos next week, all children need to be in full school uniform which includes black shoes. Our uniform of late has not been up to the usual exceptional standard, with children now wearing clothing that is not consistent with our community agreed School Uniform Guidelines. Socks should only be white or navy blue and hoodies of any type are not to be worn to school. Van type shoes are not part of our uniform. During winter, we wear a school jacket or a very simple blue fleecy top on those cooler days. The uniform guide to assist parents in ensuring children are wearing correct school uniform is on page 3 of this eNewsletter. Our P and C are looking at purchasing school socks which were trialled here two years ago and were an enormous success. Welcome to Week 2 of Term 3.

Our playground equipment behind the Year 1 rooms has been replaced owing to us living close to the sea and our ongoing problem of rust. Once this is installed and the soft fill has been added, children will be allowed to use this.

A number of our Banksia Trees are also failing and have been removed. They will be replaced with koala friendly trees which will support the koalas that live around our school. Our children will be involved in the planting of these trees.

Our updated attendance module in Sentral is working beautifully with absence notifications being even emailed or SMS, for daily absences and late arrivals. Please note all absences must have an explanation.

Our staff are also having a twilight session for Professional Learning next week and will be staying back at school until approximately 8pm. Their commitment needs to be applauded and I very much appreciate their gift of time.

Principal

Message from the Deputy Principals We are celebrating Education Week next week. It is an annual state-wide celebration of public education, which has been held for more than 50 years. The theme of ‘Learning Together’ is drawing on the education community’s sentiment of 2020.  Traditionally we have parents, grandparents, siblings and friends come into our school and share part of this special week with us… this year, as with most things, it will look and feel a little different but still with the same intent in mind - sharing our learning from school with you. We aim to provide an opportunity to view our achievements in a year filled with change and diversity which we have experienced together with you.

Throughout the extreme challenges, starting the year with communities still suffering the environmental impacts of drought, floods and bushfires, the COVID-19 pandemic struck and totally disrupted our way of life, changing the way we learn and socialise.  Our staff, in partnership with you, parents and carers, have worked tirelessly to ensure that high quality teaching and learning has continued for all students. We are grateful for the beautiful community in which we work and live!!

The learning together platform reinforces the role of our schools as the cornerstone of the community. The challenge of us all working together to move learning online almost overnight to maintain the continuity of education during blended learning clearly highlights the partnerships that are invaluable to the education of our young people.

Thank you for working with us to provide the best possible education for your children; this is certainly a year to remember!

Kelly Jordan and Trevor Thompson Deputy Principals

Reducing, Reusing and Recycling

Did you know over 80 000 000 000 aluminium cans are used in as little as 60 days? That is excessively disappointing because we all should have the power to save the earth for future generations. With the help of conservation we can absolutely make the world a better place.

If we don’t recycle we are all 100% certain that greenhouse gases will pollute the air because of raw materials. Greenhouse gases also contribute to the ‘crime of climate change’. Reusing positively reduces the amount of waste going to landfills. It is definitely unfair to the animals because their habitats are being destroyed in order to make room for landfills. Recycling unquestionably saves energy and money by eliminating the need to make or buy new materials.

We are producing over 300 million tons of plastic every year! That is exceedingly unfair to sea life and marine animals because they choke on our waste. It could be argued that climate changes occurs naturally however, it is scientifically proven that they trap heat for wildfires to occur and melt ice for floods. Therefore greenhouse gases are a clear part of global warming and climate change. Surprisingly it takes 95% less energy to recycle an aluminium can than it does to manufacture a new one. This is extremely important because as mentioned before over 80 000 000 000 aluminium cans are used in as little as 60 days! Everyone would agree that recycling saves 11 000 mega litres of water as well as 386 000 greenhouse gases.

In conclusion `Reducing’, `Reusing’ and `Recycling’ has a significant impact on our earth. Every one of us can make a difference, reduce, reuse and recycle!
