American Contract Bridge League Unit 361 TABLE TALK Message from the President As 2019 comes to a close I would like to take a moment and reflect on how the year has gone for Unit 361. The Sectionals and the Regional continue to be well attended with some great competition happening at the tables. Relationships both with Jefferson County Fairgrounds and the Renaissance Hotel which serve as our venues for the Sectionals and the Regional continue to be positive and productive. This year we also hosted a successful IN Regional in conjunction with the July Sectional. I hope all of the IN Players had a great time! All in all, we are in a great place for our tournaments. The Mentor/Mentee program has been a great success with an increasing number of IN players participating. IN players If you have not had an opportunity to take advantage of this program look for it again next year. As always, I want to thank all of the Unit Bboards members and others who volunteer for their hard work and dedication. Without it tournaments would not be feasible. A lot of planning, organizing, and manual labor is needed to ensure successful tournaments. Thanks also to the caddies and the tournament director. Best of luck in the rest of 2019! Candidates for Board – 2020-2021 Term

The nominating committee is pleased to present the following candidates for the Unit board, for the two-year term beginning in 2020. The list is in alphabetical order.

The election will be held at the annual membership meeting, 2:45 pm on Saturday, November 10, 2019, just before the second Saturday session.

Rick Gardner

I have been playing and enjoying the outstanding game of duplicate bridge since 1996. I was a board member and board president for the Ogden UT unit, and have been the treasurer and currently serving as the President of the Denver board. I enjoy working with others to forward the game of bridge and look forward to participating and working with the current and incoming board members to continue the fine traditions that Denver and Colorado duplicate bridge have to offer.

Carol Gumpert

My name is Carol Gumpert. I have been playing bridge for a number of years, having been taught originally by my parents. I like learning aspects of the game that are new to me. I am interested in working on the board in order to 'give back' to the community. I also volunteer at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science in the Paleontology lab. I am retired from being an I.T. Manager and a Quality (process) Analyst. I hope to be able to bring some of these skills to the board. I have 2 grown children, 2 wonderful grandsons and 2 grand-dogs.

Rob Vetter

I am a semi-retired software engineer with a career that includes time with Tektronix, FedEx, US West/Qwest, Comcast, Frontier, Raytheon and others.

Growing up in a family that played Pinochle and Hearts, it was natural to graduate to Bridge. I joined the ACBL in 1991, and started playing seriously in 2007 (about the time my son entered high school). I’ve been lucky to find some experienced and patient partners, teammates and mentors, and was able, with their help to achieve the rank of Life Master in 2010 and Gold Life Master in 2017. I’ve been fortunate with teammates and partners to qualify at the District level twice for GNT and once for NAP. I spend a lot of time at the local clubs. I attend most of the Front Range sectionals and have travelled for many sectional, regional and national events.

I’ve worked as a volunteer for Denver’s Holy Ghost church in the social ministry, for St Francis homeless center, for the City of Aurora, and as a member of the Denver Unit 361 board.

Bridge is an important part of my social life, and I believe in giving back. Encouraging younger and newer players is important to me. As a unit 361 member and board member, I’ve participated as a Pro in Pro/Am events at the Denver Regional, and I am active in the Mentor program for the unit.

Alice Kinningham

I have been involved with the bridge world for “a few years” now as a player, director (1984 – 2005), and was brought onto the current board to fill a vacancy serving as Education, Membership and Mentoring program point of contact. I also work very closely with the board on the Regional and newcomer/IN programs. Bridge is a passion for me and I enjoy giving back to the bridge community. I look forward to continuing my role with the board and would appreciate your support.

Ed Yosses

I have a continuous ACBL membership since 1975, reflecting a long-term commitment to the League and to our game. I have been Treasurer (2006-2013) and President (2014) of the Northern Colorado Unit and Treasurer of District 17 (2016). I have been Treasurer of the Denver Unit for the past 12 months. I was recruited to fill a vacancy on the Board last year and promptly put the finances in order, which had been neglected for several months. I seek this position to protect and advance the financial integrity of the Unit, promote the increase and retention of new members and schedule of various forms of bridge games at sectionals and the regional that meet the various preferences of the members. I would greatly appreciate your support for my continued service on the Unit Board.

The State of the Regional

By Rick Gardner, Unit 361 President

The State of Regional:

The 2019 Rocky Mountain Regional (the tournament) was a great success: expectations for the number of tables were met, and player feedback was very positive. The tournament continues to be one of the 10 largest in the country. The Board has devoted considerable time to evaluating suggestions for changes and planning the 2020 schedule. Flyers should be available shortly, and expect to see some significant changes:

1. New starting times: 10:00 am, 3:00 pm, and 7:30 pm, the same as in 2018

2. More knockouts: knockouts will start

Tuesday night, Thursday, and Saturday; there will also be an evening compact knockout Saturday and Sunday night; the Thursday and Saturday knockouts will use the Soloway format where day-one is a round-robin and on day-two the top four teams play head-to-head matches to determine first through fourth place

3. Barometer Pairs: this event will be debuted

on Friday night in place of Fast Pairs; in this event, all pairs play the same boards at the same time throughout the event; scores are projected on a screen so each pair can watch its fortunes rise and fall as the game progresses

The 2020 tournament will again open with a pro-am event on Tuesday afternoon. Along with a game limited to players with fewer than 1000 masterpoints, they will be the only events on Tuesday afternoon. The Board is encouraging all ‘pros’ and players with fewer than 300 masterpoints to play in the pro-am. For ‘ams’, this is a great opportunity to meet more experienced players and to learn. For ‘pros’, it’s a way that you can help grow duplicate bridge. Tentatively, a reception with food and a cash bar (and coupons to help defray the cost of a drink) will be held after the event.

For new and intermediate players, there will again be a speaker during the lunch break Wednesday through Sunday. These 30-minute sessions are a great way for newer players to improve their bridge. If you have not taken advantage of this in previous years, give it a try in 2020. Each day look for a poster board announcing the speaker and the topic.

Again in 2020, expect to see good food at a reasonable price, prizes for winners, special days, winners’ photos displayed prominently, and Board members and volunteers committed to making the 2020 tournament a great experience for all players.

District 17 Update By Jennifer ONeill, Treasurer D17 is bucking the trend across the country! Attendance at our D17 regionals is not declining 5-10% but is growing. Even so, there is is much work to be done to continue this trend. D17 financially supports newcomer/intermediate events that are stand alone or in conjunction with a regional. Smaller units that do not have a regional may apply for a grant to support membership building activities. In a continuing effort to improve all D17 regional tournaments, D17 is investing in our board duplication process. The district is purchasing a dealing machine, new cards and boards and a trailer for transport. In the past, we have paid a fixed price for each set of boards that we did not own (& could not control the quality) to be produced for the regionals. Starting with the Albuquerque regional in January, you will notice a difference. Also, effective this year, the district has reduced the sanction fee from $10/table to $9. The local units will be able to keep more money for their needs. The district was able to do this because we decreased the number of board members and cost savings from going to electronic communication versus the previous monthly printed Scorecard. Due to the smaller board size, any help (marketing, computer, financial, legal etc.) from non-board

members is greatly valued. If you would like to get involved, please contact me. At our meeting in Taos, we bid farewell to Bonnie Bagley, who has served as the D17 National director for the last 12 year. We will miss her & her wisdom & experience. She will continue to advise the district as requested. As a parting gift, Bonnie supplied large readable table mats so you can more easily locate your table. Please let Bonnie know how much she is appreciated next time you see her. Lastly, Las Vegas has reformed their unit & will be hosting a regional November 9 – 15, 2020. Great hotel rates, great bridge & fun. Mark your calendars.

New Player Development

By Wayne Eckerling, Unit 361 Membership and Education Chair

A high priority for the Unit 361 Board of Directors is to increase the number of newcomer and

intermediate level bridge players who regularly compete in tournaments. Recent actions to accomplish

this include the following:

1. Establishing a mentor program for Unit members with fewer than 500 masterpoints or who are

not life-masters; the program pays the mentor’s card fees; mentees can play up to four times

with any one mentor and may have more than one mentor; to date, more than 50 mentor-

mentee games have been subsidized by the Unit

2. Including a special game for players with 0-10 points at the Unit’s fall and spring I/N

tournaments

3. Having a special I/N day at the Rocky Mountain Regional that includes discounts, promotions,

and prizes

4. Hosting the Colorado Non-Life Master Regional in July in conjunction with the Unit’s summer

sectional; the tournament offered gold and red masterpoints and included speakers each day as

well as prizes for winners

5. Committing to enhance the attractiveness of the pro-am event at the Rocky Mountain Regional

The Board’s objective is to try to create a tournament atmosphere that is not threatening to newer

players and provides them opportunities to make connections with their peers as well improve their

bridge. Other actions to support newer players include waiving entry fees for players with fewer than

five masterpoints, youth and junior discounts, educational speakers at the regional tournament, and $10

entry fees at the I/N tournament including lunch. Another initiative under consideration by the Unit

Board is offering a teacher accreditation course at the Rocky Mountain Regional.

If you have an idea for how to encourage more newer players to participate in tournaments, please

contact a board member or email them to [email protected].

Farewell to Our Gentle Giant (courtesy of Peggy Ware) Jan Janitschke (October 14, 1946 - September 29, 2019) The Colorado bridge world recently said goodbye to its gentle giant, Jan Janitschke, who inspired and educated countless players with his bridge prowess for nearly a half century. Always kind and full of humor, Jan awed his opponents with a powerful imagination and keen analysis. He pushed the boundaries of this

humbling game, competing at the highest levels with an intensity and success known only by a few. Though Alzheimer’s took him at the young age of 71, Jan's legend remains deeply imprinted in our community. For decades, many have known Jan as the most accomplished Grand Life Master in Colorado. He won four national championships, including the Life Master Pairs (1980) with brother Craig Janitschke; Grand National Teams (1980) again with Craig, as well as Jack Bitman and Dick Lesko; the Jacoby Open Swiss (1982) with Allan Stauber, Ross Grabel and Mike Smolen; and, the North American Pairs (1987) with Dick Reed. He placed high in many other elite events, too numerous to count, including 4th in the 1982 World Pairs Championships held in Biarritz, France. Throughout his bridge career, Jan accumulated more than 19K masterpoints. Most of his points were earned in the 1970's and 1980's, long before players were stratified or bracketed according to level, and at a time when points were awarded less generously.

Jan learned bridge at home as a child, though it wasn't until he attended Colorado College in the late 1960's that he really took notice of the game. There he became obsessed, skipping classes to play and traveling to tournaments. His focus on school dissipated to such a degree that, while he managed to eke out degrees in math and music, he joked that he graduated “summa cum disgracium.”

Not surprisingly, this led Jan to become a professional bridge player, a vocation he began in earnest at by the age of 24. His most magical and renowned partnership was with his brother, Craig, who was 4 years - to the day - his junior. The two of them had such a potent chemistry together that theirs became one of the best-known partnerships in the world. They played together professionally on and off for nearly 20 years, stopping sometime after Craig moved to Seattle. Jan continued playing professionally until late in his life. One of Jan’s most famous partners was the late Barry Crane. While introverted and somewhat shy, Jan always made time to answer bridge questions. As one longtime friend said: “unless pressed, he’d offer only cogent and succinct replies to bridge queries.” This same friend cited the example of a woman failing miserably at a 4H contract against Jan. Distraught and befuddled, she asked him at the end “should I have made that?” to which he responded “Yes.” “How?” she asked. “Pull trump and claim,” Jan replied simply. Nothing else needed to be said. An impish, goodhearted humor and wit punctuated Jan's gentle demeanor, providing endless entertainment to partners and opponents alike. Now apocryphal, Jan is widely quoted from the 1970’s for asking his client, after a torturous auction to four of a major, “where was the hand you held during the auction?”. As was typical, he posed this question without anger or recrimination. While many of us knew and feared Jan's bridge dominance, few of us knew him away from the table. Much of what we do know is because Jan had the good sense to join forces with Bonnie Smith, his beloved wife and bridge partner of 35 years. A formidable woman in her own right, Bonnie helped Jan get past his shyness and engage with the world around him. He loved that she pushed him to try things, such as painting and gardening. A good sport, Jan frequently engaged these new pursuits with enthusiasm and curiosity. Outside of bridge, Jan had a lifelong passion for music. He played violin and classical piano, serving as concertmaster for his HS orchestra, and winning statewide competitions in both instruments. Jan had a special gift for sight-reading and playing complex pieces with no prior exposure. His favorite composers were Chopin, Shostakovich, and Prokofiev which he enjoyed playing up until the end, long after his illness impaired most other aspects of his functioning. In addition to bridge, Jan was an avid cyclist for more than 50 years. He took full advantage of the challenging Colorado terrain, once biking to and from Aspen which involved roughly 360 miles of cycling, multiple mountain passes, and intense twisty roads.
