The Walk With Christ Agape Manual

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving!” Colossians 3:23-24

The Secretariat of The Walk With Christ would like to welcome you and extend our appreciation to you for your willingness to follow the call of God in committing to this servant role.

This is God's weekend. He's the leader and guide and the glory belongs to Him. We believe it's a privilege to connect ourselves to Him and what He has planned for the weekend by lifting it up in prayer, seeking His guidance for even the smallest details as you make your plans. In a sense, the weekend's Prayer Vigil begins with you, as you begin to pray.

Some of the things you may wish to pray for are: each member on your team; their spiritual preparation and their servant's heart for the weekend other team members each candidate unity and harmony among the team members and candidates health and safety of team and candidate family members receptiveness to the Spirit’s preparation for the weekend ability to listen as the Lord directs you in your tasks

“…….the prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.” James 5:16b

"Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus."1Thessalonians 5:16-18.

"But let all who take refuge in you be glad; let them ever sing for joy. Spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may rejoice in you. For surely, O Lord, you bless the righteous; you surround them with your favor as with a shield."Psalms 5:11-12.

The FocusThe Walk With Christ (TWWC) has a unique calling to provide an environment in which individuals can seek and renew, in a special way, their personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ. The ministry of the TWWC is carried out through a planned weekend in which God’s Agape love is shown to all that attend. Since the TWWC is ecumenical and since the focus of its ministry is on God’s love that unites participants, TWWC will not state a position and requests that its representatives not state a position on doctrinal or social issues. Individuals inquiring about doctrinal or social issues during a Walk function should be directed to their own minister or pastor. In this manner, TWWC can put its full ministry into showing God’s love to all that participate.

God’s Unconditional Love

“Keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life.” – Jude 1:21

“May the Lord direct your hearts into God’s love and Christ’s perseverance.” – 2 Thessalonians 3:5

“My command is this: love each other as I have loved you.” – John 15-12

Introduction:Agape Feast

The following is quoted from the Director(a)’s script in introduction to the Agape feast for the Candidates:

Welcome to your Agape. This is a celebration, a Love Feast, prepared by our loving community for our Day of Love. We read in the Bible that the first Christians often met in the evening for a common meal. It may sometimes have been similar to a modern potluck, but often it was an especially nice meal that the more fortunate Christians provided for those who had less. It was sharing of love and concern in the Christian community, the kind of self-giving love which in the Greek language is called "Agape". This is your Agape - the feast of a loving community. You are invited to share at this table by Jesus Christ, not because of anything you have done or have been, but simply because you are. You are loved and respected just for being you. This is the meaning of Agape.

Tonight we have the opportunity to express our companionship and friendship for one another as we share our bread together. The word "companion" is a combination of two Latin words-"cum"(coom) meaning "with" and "panas" meaning bread. Thus, a companion is one with whom we share bread. This is a banquet feast which symbolizes our companionship as we break and share bread with one another, but above all, this Love Feast expresses our companionship with Jesus, our friend, who has invited us to be with Him this weekend, and especially tonight. This is a joyous occasion - the table has been prepared with love. Let us imagine that this is a banquet such as the apostles shared with Jesus. It is a very special banquet because you are not only guests, you are apostles - each of you. Jesus has chosen you and calls forth to your soul and spirit. It is the spiritual part of us that Jesus loves and it is the soul that gives itself to Him.

Will you now approach the table? The bread that you see on the table before you was baked with modern ingredients, and in modern appliances - but is still the bread of Jesus' time.

This is a banquet, a celebration, so relax and enjoy your food, drink, and companions. Remember that Jesus broke bread and shared it with others, so feel free to share with your sisters and brothers here tonight.

History:“The Cursillo Community of the Diocese of Olympia (who originally brought Cursillo to the Diocese of Spokane) expanded the Cursillo and provided an AGAPE service to allow the Cursillo community to participate in a Love Service for the new candidates making their Cursillo.

The Agape Service for the Men’s Outreach Cursillo at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Walla Walla in February of 1975 was presented by a special Love Team from Seattle who chartered a plane and flew four Cursillistas and a complete set of silver service borrowed from the Meany Hotel in Seattle. Thelocal Walla Walla community provided the Agape Service for the subsequent Women’s Outreach Cursillo. The statue of Christ was borrowed from the local Catholic church.

The Kitchen and Palanca Teams presented the Agape for the first three or four years. When Walk to Emmaus, and now The Walk With Christ, became a reality, a special Love Team provided the Agape, thus giving the Kitchen and Palanca Teams a much needed rest.

The Agape Service is a gift of LOVE from The Walk With Christ community to the new pilgrims. (provided by Gabe Joseph)

General Objectives:The Agape room contains rectangular tables arranged in the form of a cross, with a statue of Christ on the tables at the center of the crossbar. With a light shining at the statue from the lower part of the cross, a shadow is projected onto the wall at the top of the cross. That shadow portrays the risen Christ.

Table settings for each participant will provide fruit (strawberries or grapes), juice and bread as elements of the “Love Feast”. A red napkin and red carnation are there to express the blood shed by Jesus Christ on the cross for our sins and the love of God. Please note: the table settings are NOT to be deviated from in ANY manner. Only fruit will be on the individual plates. Bread, on the specified bread plates, and a red napkin beside each individual plate. The simplicity of the setting allows the focus to remain on Jesus.

All other items in the room (outside the table and its settings, the statue and its shadow), should be eliminated from view (masked, covered over, etc.) so as to avoid causing visual distractions.

Basic Responsibilities of Agape Chairperson(s):1. Obtain consumables (juice, fruit, bread, and red carnations) prior to the Walk.2. Supervise preparation of Agape room (helping to clean up after dinner if using dining room and putting

away of table settings).3. Supervise setting up Agape room, entryway, outside walkways, and Background Team Agape.4. Supervise cleanup and setting up dining room for Sunday breakfast.5. Arrange for red napkins to be cleaned by Love Chair.

Page 6Revised October Agape

General Planning Sequence:

1. Upon acceptance to lead the Agape team, the chairperson(s) begin(s) praying for surrendering themselves to the leading of the Holy Spirit for the job ahead.

2. Depending upon the season of year, arrangements should be made well ahead for obtaining the fruit (strawberries or grapes) and the long stemmed red carnations.

3. A plan should also be developed for the purchase and/or making of the bread. A popular recipe is provided in Appendix D.

4. The Agape chair often asks certain people to be on the team to lead specific work units and determines the number of members for that work unit.

5. Work unit instructions and assignments can be photocopied from here to have ready on Saturday afternoon of the Agape feast to hand out to each of the team leaders.

6. Photocopies of the two pages of Rooster Tales containing candidate and team names can be made in advance to hand out to each of the Agape team members for their use in praying for those participating in Agape.

7. Things to determine in advance from others:a. Usually at a Core team meeting

1. The approximate time of Agape is determined from the Director’s schedule. This will give you a target time to have Agape ready.

2. Whether Agape invitation is going to be handed out in advance or placed on Agape table.3. Determine number of table settings at the Agape table. (Confirmed this number on

Saturday afternoon with the Recorder.)4. What and where the Director wants for Background Team Agape.

Saturday afternoon the Agape chairperson(s) contacts the Palanca chair(s) for packing instructions for the Saturday night feast table decorations before starting to set up the Agape feast. Also, obtain instructions on setting up the dining room for Sunday breakfast after cleaning up from the Agape feast.

b. Agape team often gathers for prayer, fellowship and breaking bread together prior to going to the church to set up Agape. This provides a time of team forming and focus on the leading of the Holy Spirit. A concentrated prayer vigil during the Agape feast is usually undertaken by the Agape team, who gather around outside the Agape room building. Presentation of this can be done while handing out of Rooster Tales sheets containing candidate and team names at the Agape team gathering.

c. Sometime between 6-7 P.M. (following dinner) the Agape team arrives at the church to begin setting up the Agape room. Teams go to work doing their assigned tasks in prayerful consideration of the Holy Spirit’s leading. Agape is often held in the dining area, so the first task is to help clear away the tables from the Saturday night feast.

d. Just prior to the arrival of the Pilgrims’ Inn people, the Agape team change into their “black & whites” (white top, black slacks/skirts, black bow tie for men, dark shoes, The Walk With Christ cross [without any attachments], NO nametag). Those who have worked to set up the Agape feast, being considered as the Agape team, are invited by some director(a)s to stand outside the Agape room holding oil candles, dressed in “black & white” and singing as the Pilgrims’ Inn people arrive.

e. During the time that the Pilgrims’ Inn people are in the Agape room, the Agape team can arrange themselves around the outside of the Agape room building and quietly pray for the candidates and the team.

f. When the people leave the Agape room the Agape team re-enters, cleans up everything, returns all supplies to the Supply trailer that belong there and sets up the dining rooms for breakfast. This latter task involves prior contact with the Palanca Chair for instructions on table settings to be used.

Suggested Teams1. Table setup (tables, table cloth, Jesus statue, plates (individual & bread), red napkins, invitations,

carnations, flashlight, candles)2. Statue base (greenery, flowers, etc.)3. Paper covering (windows, doors, etc.)4. Kitchen (fruit cleaning & preparation, juice glass filling, bread preparation; putting all on table, juice

last)5. Entryway6. Outside7. Background Team Agape

General Work Plan:1. After dinner the Kitchen and Palanca teams leave for their Background Team Agape.2. The Agape team helps the Love team cleanup the dining room. The Love team then leaves the

dining room to clean up the kitchen.3. Next the Agape team gathers in what is now the Agape room and prays for the Lord’s blessing on your

work. This quiet time of team prayer helps to calm the hearts and minds of the Agape team to establish the reverent focus of the task ahead.

4. Three areas of work are begun: Agape Room, entryway, outside walkways.

Agape Room1. Clear out room of all unneeded objects (extra tables, chairs, etc). Vacuum or clean floor.2. Arrange tables in form of cross.3. Cover tables with white tablecloths. At the Director(a)’s discretion, these may be cloth, or

disposable paper/plastic.4. Place Jesus statue on tables at crossing of tables and begin decorating the statue base.5. Place votive candles and bread plates in proper position along centerline of table.6. Arrange individual fruit plates for spacing along table. (Some have put extra setting for Jesus at table).7. Cover windows, exit signs, doorways, etc. with white paper or sheets. Basketball backboards are nicely

hidden with black plastic garbage bags.8. Place red napkin, invitation (if used), and flower in proper position.

NOTE: The battery powered candles are not to be used on the table. They are to be used by the background teams lining the room.

9. Place flashlight in position and check shadow on wall.10. Place strawberries or grapes (if strawberries unavailable) on individual plates. Note: this is NOT to be

deviated from in any manner. The fruit is the ONLY thing on the plate.11. Put juice glasses in place and align down table with string-line or visually. (Caution: do not handle

glasses around top. You leave fingerprints. Handle along stem only.)12. Change into “black & whites” if instructed by Director to do so.13. Turn on flashlight to produce shadow, darken room, position team outside with luminaries.

Entryway1. Entryway from door to room is usually draped with white sheets to mask out everything (if practical).2. “Invitation to Agape” banner is hung with soft light on it.

Page 8: Table of Contents - thewalkwithchrist.org  · Web viewPage 11Revised October 2014Agape Manual. Page 11. Revised October 2014. Agape Manual. Page 10Revised October 2014Agape Manual.

Page 8Revised October Agape

3. Table or tripod easel is set up with picture of Jesus and replica of table setting with backdrop of white sheet. Soft light aimed at this arrangement.

Outside Walkways, etc.1. White paper sacks are filled with approx. 1-2 cups of kitty litter or gravel for weight. Sack top folded

down helps to maintain opening.2. Votive candles placed in bag on top of weighting material.3. Sacks are placed along entry walkway at intervals of approx. 6-8 feet.4. Votive candles are lit with tapered candle or lighter 5 minutes before arrival of pilgrims.

Background Team Agape1. Some secluded place away from the Pilgrims’ Inn Agape feast is set aside for Background Team Agape.2. This Agape has a wide array of arrangements and programs. Planning is usually done with the K/P

Spiritual Leader at the direction of the Director(a).3. Generally, a low key arrangement is made whereby a table is set up with the juice glasses arranged in

a cross shape and a few plates of bread are set nearby. Singing and fellowship is done. Sometimes a devotional by the K/P Spiritual Leader is conducted

4. This may be done either after the background teams leave the Agape Room or immediately following the feast, at the discretion of the Director(a).

Cross-shaped table arrangement: Tables are arranged in a cross shape that is located in the room so that when people come in they can look down the table to the shadow on the far wall.

Seven of the 8 ft. tables will produce this arrangement. If necessary, six foot long tables can also be used because four 6-ft tables are the same length as three 8-ft tables. Therefore, use three 8-ft tables or four 6-ft tables for the two long sections that form the "T" of the cross. Then use an 8-ft table for the head of the cross; a 6-ft table could also be used, which would result in the loss of about 2 table settings.

Table legs sometimes need to be shimmed up to ensure that the table surfaces are perfectly flat. Use small pieces of cardboard under the legs to do this. Sometimes people cover the crack between the tables with duct tape to smooth it for the placement of glasses, etc.

Table covering:White disposable table clothes (found in the Supply Trailer) are used to cover the tables. These are arranged so that the amount of table cloth overhang is exactly the same (as measured from the floor up or tabletop down) all the way around the cross.

Page 9: Table of Contents - thewalkwithchrist.org  · Web viewPage 11Revised October 2014Agape Manual. Page 11. Revised October 2014. Agape Manual. Page 10Revised October 2014Agape Manual.

Page 9Revised October Agape

Jesus Statue:The statue is usually set upon a wooden box (provided in the trailer) to raise it slightly above the table so that the shadow is cast high on the wall. The statue is facing towards the foot of the cross so that “Jesus is facing you as you stand at the foot of the cross”. The box and base of the statue are usually covered with greenery (evergreens, shrubbery, or vines) to add a visually pleasing area below the statue and hide the box. Sometimes flowers are added to this greenery to add some color and variety. However, the main focus is the statue, so try to avoid having too much in the greenery.

A broad-beamed flashlight (one in supply trailer or your own) should be placed about 10-12 feet in front of the statue on the centerline of the table to produce the shadow behind the statue. The flashlight can be camouflaged by covering with one of the red napkins. Optimal placement of the flashlight may mean moving a votive candle or a bread plate.

Votive Candles and Bread Plates:The votive candles are to be placed between the fruit plates on the centerline of the table (equidistant from plates on the centerline of the plates).

Page 10: Table of Contents - thewalkwithchrist.org  · Web viewPage 11Revised October 2014Agape Manual. Page 11. Revised October 2014. Agape Manual. Page 10Revised October 2014Agape Manual.

Page Revised October Agape

Bread is placed on a glass plate on the centerline of the table in between individual table settings. Usually there is sufficient bread to be used by the 4 individuals to each side of the bread plate. Bread is usually cut into manageable sizes and is of a non-crumble type bread (easier to clean up after).

The votive candles and bread plates are set down the center of the table using a carpenter's tape measure that is calibrated in inches. All measurements are made from the outside ends of the cross and measuring towards the statue in the center of the cross. In the following figure, "A" represents two lines of plates from the foot of the cross to the statue, "B" represents four lines of plates along the arms of the cross, and "C" represents two lines of plates at the head of the cross. The letters A, B, and C also correspond to placement of votive candles and bread plates down the centerline of the table.

Candle holders are 2 1/2 inches wide at their maximum diameter, so the measuring tape must be offset from the table center by 1 1/4 inches. Similarly, the bread plates are 8 inches wide, so the tape must be offset by 4 inches. Make a faint pencil mark at the centerline of the table (for a 30 inch wide table, make the mark at 15 inches). Make another mark 1 1/4 inches from the centerline, and another mark at 4 inches from the centerline. Repeat these measurements towards the other end of the table near the statue. An alternative is to make two templates (shown below), that can be placed along the centerline of the table.

Lay the carpenters tape measure 1 1/4 inches from the table centerline and place the votive candles along the tape at the distances shown in the chart. For example, a 20 inch spacing will result in votive candles at 10, 30, 50, 70, . . . and up to 270 inches. When looking down at the top of the candle holder, the largest outside diameter of the candle holder should be above the edge of the tape.

Lay the tape measure 4 inches from the table center and place the bread plates at the distances shown in the chart. The edge of the bread plate is at the edge of the tape.

Fruit Plates:

Next, use the carpenter's tape measure to set out the individual fruit plates. Place the tape along the edge of the table. The tape is 1 inch wide, which provides the correct spacing between the edge of the table and the fruit plates. Use the measurements given in the chart to place the plates at the correct distances along the tape. Note that the fruit plates are set at the same distances as the votive candles.

Be careful when using the carpenter's tape because it can tear the tablecloth. A team of four people seems to work the best -- two people holding the tape (one at each end of the tape), one person calling out the measurements, and one person placing the plates/candles. When the tape is moved to its next location, the two people at the ends of the tape move it carefully. If the tape needs to be recoiled into its case, first take

the tape off the table. Two sets of 4-person teams (using two carpenter's tapes) can speed the process of setting the table.

Red Napkins:The red napkins are placed on the left side of the plate with the fold towards the plate and the bottom aligned with the bottom edge of the plate. Both the plate and the napkin are exactly 1 inch from the edge of the table.

Invitation:If used on the Agape table the invitation is placed to the right of the plate as shown in the diagram below. Most often the invitation is handed to the pilgrims when they leave the Discipleship talk on their way to Agape.

Red Carnation:Each carnation is placed to the right of the plate as shown in the two diagrams below. Carnations should have a 12” stem. The end of each stem is one inch from the edge of table like everything else.

Juice Glasses:Juice glasses are usually filled with red cranberry juice to just above center of the glass. All the glasses are filled to exactly the same height. This is accomplished by drawing a straight black line on a piece of masking tape about 2-3 feet long, placing tape on the wall behind the counter at the right height, and filling a row of glasses to that height. Pour each glass to just below the line and then adjust to the line by adding spoonfuls as necessary.

Handle glasses by stems only. Do not leave fingerprints on upper portion of glasses.

Juice glasses are placed on the Agape table last. This is to avoid knocking over one of the glasses and having to strip the table and remove red stained tablecloth.

The glasses are placed on the table with the glass base aligning with the edges of the plate. See diagram.

After glasses are in place, use either visual alignment or string line to ensure that the glasses are in alignment down the table. String line (black teardrop with yellow rewind handles) is available in Agape tub. Be really careful using string line to avoid knocking over a juice glass.

While it would be possible to use the tape measure for juice glass placement, getting the tape recoiled and off the table might knock over glasses. Careful placement of the glass, as shown above, followed by visual or string alignment seems to be the safest method to avoid a spill.

Paper covering:White paper on a roll is available in the supply trailer, as is masking tape to hold up the paper. Side doorways, windows, exit signs, etc. are all covered up within the Agape room. If using the multipurpose room/fellowship hall, the basketball backboards are usually covered with black plastic garbage sacks to eliminate them from view.

Entryway:The entryway from the outside door to the Agape room is usually covered with white sheets or white paper to eliminate any distractions and provide for a white, clean entry into the Agape room. This is, of course, if it is practical at this location.

A picture of Jesus is usually displayed on a tripod stand or on a table. Both the tripod and table are usually covered with a white sheet first. If using a table an Agape table place setting (plate, fruit, juice glass, carnation, Agape invitation) is sometimes placed on the table.

An “invitation to Agape” banner is in the supply trailer and usually is hung near the picture. The picture of Jesus has to be brought by the Agape chair as there is not one in the supply trailer.

Background Team Agape Feast:1. Background Team Agape is not well standardized.2. Usually in some room far from the Pilgrims’ Inn Agape feast, a place is set up for Background

Team Agape.3. Often a table is covered with white cloth, juice glasses are arranged in shape of cross, and

several plates with bread are set nearby.4. This is often a quiet, restful time for the Background team. Often a chance to sit down and

share a little juice and bread with, maybe, a devotional conducted by the K/P Spiritual leader.

Open & Closed Agape:Probably “the most misunderstood terms” in The Walk With Christ. This “open” or “closed” designation is determined by the Walk Director(a). Spouses of candidates should be encouraged not to work. If, they do work the team, however, they may never be visible to the candidates. Other than for Open Agape no team members should be visible to the candidates.

“Open Agape” means that those who have worked to set up the Agape feast are invited to wear their “black & whites”, stand outside the Agape building (outside walkways) holding oil candles, and sing as the pilgrims arrive for Agape. This is before Agape only, not afterwards. The general Walk With Christ community are not invited to join this greeting to the Agape feast. This is “open” to the Agape team only. The Kitchen and Palanca teams, wearing their “black & whites”, line the Agape Feast room holding luminaries and sing during the pilgrims’ entry but leave before the Agape feast begins.

“Closed Agape” means no one is visible outside the Agape room before the Agape feast. The Kitchen and Palanca teams, wearing their “black & whites”, line the Agape feast room holding luminaries and sing during the pilgrims’ entry but leave before the Agape feast begins.

Instructions for Open Agape:After the Agape room is prepared and the Agape team is dressed in their “black & whites”, they gather outside the entryway to receive an oil candle. Just before the pilgrims arrive, the oil candles are lighted. The oil candles are held in the right hand with the left hand behind your back. The Agape team faces straight ahead without making eye contact with the pilgrims and sings along with the pilgrims. When the pilgrims have all entered the building the oil candles are extinguished and returned to the tub. The Agape team then begins the silent prayer vigil outside the Agape building. Team members may bring folding chairs (lawn chairs from home) to sit on while praying for the candidates and team on the Rooster Tales sheets handed earlier in the evening (or brought from home). All during the time the pilgrims are in the Agape feast, the Agape team prays for each candidate and team member who are in the Agape Feast or Background Team Agape feast being held elsewhere.

Budget

The maximum expense for the Agape Team is $150 (January 1999). An advance on this budget can be made to the Secretariat Treasurer through the Walk Director, or a request for reimbursement can be made at the time of your financial reporting. Keep all receipts to turn in with your financial report. Return final report and receipts to the Director(a) within ten (10) days following completion of the Walk weekend.

These funds are used to purchase the following: Pilgrims’ Inn Agape Red Carnations – 1 each for each table setting Cranberry juice – about 3 gallons is sufficient Strawberries – whole fresh strawberries, 3 each at each table setting Bread – on the plate centered between 4 table settings; often a pilgrim volunteers to make this.

Sometimes the kitchen Chef can buy these items more inexpensively through his/her bulk purchasing arrangements, so before obtaining them talk with the Chef.

Background Team AgapeThis varies according to the Director(a)’s wishes. Creativity is used more than purchased materials to keep expenses low. Most often whatever is used here comes from the Kitchen budget.

Financial Reporting:The Agape chairperson must report all expenses to the Secretariat Treasurer and the Walk Director(a) at the conclusion of the weekend. The Walk Director(a) needs this information from each budgeted Core team to include in the report to Secretariat. The Treasurer needs this information for the financial accounting of each Walk. The following pages provide examples of how that should be done. Remember to keep all your receipts to include with this report. Return final report and receipts to the Director(a) within ten (10) days following completion of the Walk weekend.

COMMUNION BREAD(Flat Bread)

Pastor Alan Eschenbacher

Notes: This is a flat communion bread and very easy to make. One full recipe serves 35 – 50 people depending on whether the pastors tear off the pieces or the communicants tear their own.

Oven Temp: 350° Preparation Time: 20 minutesTotal Baking Time: 15 – 18 minutes

Ingredients:2 cups whole wheat flour 1 cup white (bread) flour 1 – ¼ tsp. baking powder 1 – ¼ tsp. salt4 tsp. olive oil¾ cup + 2 Tbs. VERY HOT water (I boil mine

before measuring)3 Tbs. honey3 Tbs.

molasses

Directions:

Mix dry ingredients by sifting together 3 times. Cut in olive oil. In small bowl, mix water, honey and molasses together. The dough will be a bit sticky.

Divide the dough in up to 4 parts. Roll in ¼ inch circles. Mark with a cross in the

center. Bake for 10 minutes and remove from the oven. Brush generously with

more olive oil.

Return to oven for an additional 5 – 8 minutes until golden

brown on top. Cool completely.

When completely cooled, the loaves may be wrapped in plastic wrap and then sealed in re- sealable plastic bags for freezing. They freeze well and can be kept for up to a month in the freezer before thawing and using.
