Intimidated by Group Prayer?

1

“Again, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them.” Matthew 18:19-20

God desires your fellowship, and you can participate in a new dimension of fellowship and communication with Him through conversational prayer. Conversational prayer is a format that can be used in a group. It is informal prayer where the objective is to speak conversationally with God from our hearts.People involved in conversational prayer, pray briefly aloud several times. Don’t worry about impressing those who hear you. And be less concerned with the form of your prayer or with the specific words than with simply communicating with God. Here are several guidelines:

Pray briefly. You will pray briefly if you pray about only one aspect of a subject. You may wish to leave other aspects of the subject to other people. By each personal praying briefly, you each get to pray again sooner than if each person were to pray longer. This keeps one alert, awake and involved in what is being prayed.Pray spontaneously, not in sequence. Don’t pray around the circle, but let each person pray for that which interests him. For example, if six subjects are prayed over in the conversational prayer time, you may have vital interest in only three of them. Don’t pray for something about which you are uninformed or not motivated. In conversational prayer there is freedom to pray when you are ready and to pray about items that you believe you should pray for.

Praying spontaneously does not mean praying thoughtlessly. While another is praying on the subject at hand, you have time for the Holy Spirit to confirm in your own heart what you would like to pray.

As you start praying as a group, there will often be a few moments of silence while people quiet their hearts and focus their attention on the business at hand – that of praying effectively.

Normally the focus of prayer should start with God and move toward requests. Usually in a group it is best to start with praise and thanksgiving. Someone may start praising the Lord for His greatness, and another will praise His power. Still another might praise God for His faithfulness. Another may thank Him for a neighbor who has trusted Christ recently. Another may thank Him for the abundant life he has in Christ.

You may then pray for needs within the group. You will find that your relationships with others in the group will grow more personal as you pray for each other. You will also find that you have an added burden to pray for each other during the week.

OUR THEOLOGY

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A CHRISTIAN?WHO IS REFORMED AND PRESBYTERIAN?

2

WHAT DID JOHN CALVIN TEACH?

How does your theology compare?

1 Our highest knowledge, is that of God and of ourselves.2 Enough knowledge comes by nature to leave us without excuse, but adequate knowledge is given only in the Scripture, which the witness of the Spirit in the heart of the believer attests as the very voice of God.3 Obedience to God’s will is our primary duty4 Human beings are, of ourselves, absolutely incapable of goodness5 All People are in a state of ruin meriting only damnation6 From this condition (of damnation) some people are undeservedly rescued through the work of Christ7 All that Christ has done for us is without avail unless we personally respond in faith. Saving faith is effected by the Holy Spirit who works when, how, and where He will, creating repentance. Saving faith is a vital union between the believer and Christ8 Works pleasing to God are the proof that the believer has entered into vital union with Christ9 People are saved to character rather than by character10 Nourishment of the Christian life is by prayer11 Human beings are unable to initiate or resist conversion12 Some are saved and others are lost by divine choice – election and reprobation13 God’s will is an ultimate fact14 Three institutions have been divinely established by which the Christian life is maintained: the church, the sacraments, and civil government15 In the last analysis the church consists of “all the elect of God;” but it also properly denotes “the whole body of mankind…who profess to worship one God and Christ.”16 John Calvin recognized only two sacraments – baptism and the Lord’s supper. He denied any physical presence of Christ in the sacrament; yet he asserts in the clearest terms a real, though spiritual, presence received by faith.

How We Do CommunionFor Elders

1. Following the sermon the minister moves to the communion table for the invitation and Apostle’s Creed.

3

2. Elders come forward to front pew during 2nd verse of Just As I Am. Take your place according to your card given at prayer time in lounge before the service.

3. All are seated. The minister says a prayer and the words of institution for the bread ending with Do this in remembrance of me. The minister will nod. This is the signal for the elders serving the bread to stand and move forward to receive the trays of bread two by two. After serving they meet in the back so they can come forward together in reverse order (last to get bread is first down the aisle).

4. When the elders return the plates they take their places and sit down together as the minister descends the steps. The minister serves the bread to each one. Eat as served. Then the minister returns to the table and replaces the bread plate.

5. The minister will say words of institution for the cup followed by a nod. When the nod is given the elders serving the cup will rise to receive their trays two by two. Distribute the cups, meet in the back and come forward in reverse order together.

6. The minister serves the cups while waiting till all are served. The minister announces the communion of the cup. All drink. The minister has a closing prayer. All sing the closing hymn.

Annual Service of Ordination and Installation

Here is the service of ordination and installation for every officer in the church. This will help you know what to expect on the day you are ordained or installed.

I invite the elders and deacons to be ordained or installed to come forward for the service of ordination and installation.

4

Explanation of the offices: As there were in the Old Testament elders for the government of the people, so the New Testament church provided persons with particular gifts to share in governing and ministry. Elders are chosen by the people to exercise leadership, government, and discipline. They serve on the Session. The office of Deacon as set forth in scripture is one of sympathy, witness, and service after the example of Jesus Christ. Deacons are called to minister to those in need, to the sick, to the friendless, and to any who may be in distress.

I would like to ask you the following nine constitutional questions….

CONSTITUTIONAL QUESTIONS TO OFFICERS:

a. Do you trust in Jesus Christ your Savior, acknowledge him Lord of all and Head of the church and through him believe in one God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit? I DOb. Do you accept the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments to be, by the Holy Spirit, the unique and authoritative witness to Jesus Christ in the Church universal, and God’s Word to you? I DOc. Do you sincerely receive and adopt the essential tenets of the Reformed faith as expressed in the confessions of our church as authentic and reliable expositions of what Scripture leads us to believe and do, and will you be instructed and led by those confessions as you lead the people of God? I DOd. Will you fulfill your office in obedience to Jesus Christ, under the authority of Scripture, and be continually guided by our confessions? I WILLe. Will you be governed by our church’s polity, and will you abide by its discipline? Will you be a friend among your colleagues in ministry, working with them, subject to the ordering of God’s Word and Spirit? I WILLf. Will you in your own life seek to follow the Lord Jesus Christ, love your neighbors and work for the reconciliation of the world? I WILLg. Do you promise to further the peace, unity, and purity of the church? I WILLh. Will you seek to serve the people with energy, intelligence, imagination, and love? I WILLi. (For elder) Will you be a faithful elder, watching over the people, providing for their worship, nurture, and service? Will you share in government and discipline, serving in governing bodies of the church, and in your ministry will you try to show the love and justice of Jesus Christ? I WILLj. (For deacon) Will you be a faithful deacon, teaching charity, urging concern, and directing the people’s help to the friendless and those in need? In your ministry will you try to show the love and justice of Jesus Christ? I WILL

CONSTITUTIONAL QUESTIONS TO CONGREGATION:

a. Do we, the members of the church accept (names) __________ as elders or deacons, chosen by God through the voice of this congregation to lead us in the way of Jesus Christ? WE DOb. Do we agree to encourage them, to respect their decisions, and to follow as they guide us, serving Jesus Christ, who alone is Head of the Church? WE DO

5

Now I would invite any previously ordered elders and deacons in our congregation to come forward and join us in the laying on of hands. Those being ordained shall come up the steps and kneel if able, and those to be installed but not ordained will please remain standing for prayer.

ORDINATION PRAYER:God of providence and promise, as you appointed Samuel to anoint David as King of Israel, so you have appointed this church to ordain these believers to the office of elder and deacon. As you chose David to be king because you looked into his heart, we know you have called these servants because you have looked into their hearts and find in them compassion and love. As David watch over the sheep, may these servants watch over your flock with tenderness, passion, and zeal. May they nurture and care for those in the flock and earnestly search after those that become lost. May they seek our sheep not of your fold and bring them into your family of faith. As David was a man after God’s own heart, may these servants grow in their love and devotion to you. May their faith be nurtured as they serve, so that their love for your word, and your will, would exceed all other desires. May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Love of God and the power of the Holy Spirit rest upon each one this day and for ever more. Amen.

Let us greet our brothers and sisters in Christ!

DIGEST OF GIFT POLICICES AT FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCHAS OF FEBRUARY 1, 2000

Taken from letter by Rev. Gerstenmier to Trustees dated 04/12/94 and Memorial Fund guidelines dated October, 1990

Principle 1: The Session receives and manages all offerings for the work of Christ in our midst.

Principle 2: Designated gifts should be used for those purposes when practical under the guidance of the Session.

Principle 3: Undesignated gifts are divided three ways: 10% to Mission Committee, 45% to the Session treasurer to be used for Ministry Programs (changing lives for Christ), the second 45% is split between capital reserve funds A & B. Trustees may spend funds from B for capital expenditures, fund A’s principle should grow and cannot be spent without Session approval. Interest from Fund A should be placed in Fund B.

Principle 4: The building fund receives all gifts thus designated either by note or envelope to that fund. Trustees may use these funds for capital needs.

Principle 5: Session has delegated the management of Funds A and B and the building fund to the Trustees. Session should respect their domain. Likewise, Trustees should not presume to spend Memorial funds without consulting with the Session. Boards should respect one another, nevertheless, our polity dictates that Session is ultimately responsible for all activities and funds in the church.

Principle 6: Gifts valued at less than $200.00 may be used by the Session Treasurer in a discretionary fashion and reported after the fact at the next Session meeting. Gifts between $200 and $15,000 may only be spent with prior Session approval. Gifts over $15,000 are normally invested. Principle should only be spent with Congregational approval.

Principle 7: We believe the above division provides for the 3 areas of need that Christ calls us to:a) Mission outreach beyond our own need.b) Local ministryc) Facilities care and maintenance

The difference between leading and managingFrom: Principle Centered Leadership, Stephen R. CoveySummit Books, 1990, pgs 244-249

In organizations, people usually perform one of the three essential roles: producer, manager, or leader. Each role is vital to the success of the organization. For example, if there is no producer, great ideas and high resolves are not carried out. The work simply doesn’t get done. When there is no manager, there is role conflict and ambiguity; everyone attempts to be a producer, working independently, with few established systems or procedures. And if there is no leader, there is lack of vision and direction. People begin to lose sight of their mission.

Although each role is important to the organization, the role of leader is most important. Without strategic leadership, people may dutifully climb the “ladder of success” but discover, upon reaching the top rung, that is leaning against the wrong wall.

We could look at every field of human endeavor and find endless examples of people scrambling to the top of a ladder that is leaning against the wrong wall. Peter Drucker teaches that without a few years of their establishment, most organizations lose sight of their mission and essential role and become focused on methods or efficiency or doing things right rather than on effectiveness or doing the right things. It seems that people tend to codify past successful practices into rules for the future and give energy to preserving and enforcing these rules even after they no longer apply. Indeed, traditional procedures and practices die hard!

That’s why the role of the leader is so crucial to continual success. Leadership deals with direction – with making sure that the ladder is leaning against the right wall. Management deals with speed. To double one’s speed in the wrong direction, however, is the very definition of foolishness. Leadership deals with vision – with keeping the mission in sight – and with effectiveness and results. Management deals with establishing structure and systems to get those results. It focuses on efficiency, cost-benefit analyses, logistics, methods, procedures and policies.People who are excellent managers but poor leaders may be extremely well organized and run a tight ship with superior systems and procedures and detailed job descriptions. But unless they are internally motivated, little gets done because there is no feeling, no heart; everything is too mechanical, too formal, too tight, and too protective. A looser organization may work much better even though it may appear to an outside observer to be disorganized and confused.

While all the producers are hacking their way through the jungle and their managers are sharpening their machetes for them and setting up machete-wielding working schedules and putting on training programs for machete wielders, an enlightened and courageous leader must sometimes cry out, “Wrong jungle!: even though he can expect to receive the answer, “Be quiet, we’re making progress!”

First Presbyterian Church is: Christ-centered Bible-based Disciple-making Outreach-oriented

Christ-centeredJesus Christ is our life example and his work is our life’s work

Col. 1:18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.

Bible-basedOur teaching and our church’s mission comes from the bible, God’s inspired word to us.

2 Tim. 3:16-17 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Disciple-makingA disciple is a learner who practices spiritual disciplines including prayer, bible reading, fellowship, & giving. They discover and use their spiritual gifts in the church and the world.

Matthew 28:19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations…

Ephes. 4:11-12 It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, 12to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up

Outreach-orientedIt is our purpose to share Jesus Christ with those who do not yet know him and bring them into the family of God.

Acts 2:46-47 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, [47] praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.
