GENERAL POINTERS ON PREPARINGFINANCIAL AWARDS APPLICATIONS
1. Start early: It takes time to prepare a good application, time for the office staff to prepare transcripts, time for teachers to write letters of reference, time for you to revise your application.
2. Keep originals: Save originals for your final copy and use photocopied forms for working copies. Always keep a photocopy of your completed applications and data.
3. Maintain Quality: Your letters, résumés, or essays should look as good as possible, typed or neatly handwritten as indicated. Use quality paper. Competition for large scholarships is fierce.
4. Use the writing process to write your essays or letters:
Generating Drafting Revising Editing Publishing
See page 12 - “Writing a Letter or Essay for a Financial Award”
5. Recommendations or Letters of Reference: Allow sufficient time for your referee to write you letters (at least two weeks). Don’t ask on Wednesday for a letter for Friday. Provide a completed “Request for a Letter of Reference” form. See the Career Resource Assistant in the Career Centre for further copies. Teachers and Administration will be requesting this before they will start a letter of reference.
If possible, include a copy of the award for which you are applying. Knowing the criteria the award is based on assists the person writing a letter of recommendation.
See page 11: “Obtaining a Letter of Reference for a Financial Award”
6. Signature: Make sure you sign the application form where required
7. Social Insurance Number (SIN): Have a Social Insurance Number. Several of the major financial awards require it. Indicate that one can be provided. Do not include this information unless specifically requested.
POST-SECONDARY FINANCIAL PLANNING HANDBOOK - 8 -
IMPORTANT INFORMATION YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT POST-SECONDARY FINANCIAL AWARDS
Students considering applying for any type of financial award should research the scholarships for which they wish to apply. This research should include the following:
Admission Applications: Admission applications to post secondary institutions are separate forms with individual deadlines. These applications may be mailed or students may register online.
Award Applications: Financial award application forms should be requested well in advance of the deadline for submitting completed forms. Application forms may be available in the Career Center or online. It is the responsibility of the student to obtain application forms, and to complete the necessary documentation. Read and re-read the application instructions.
Deadlines: These dates must be strictly followed. Some financial awards specify the date as “postmarked” or “received by”. Avoid disqualification. Prepare and mail your applications early.
Documents: Each financial award requires specific documents such as interim marks, or a letter of reference.
Essays: Some financial awards require the applicant to write an essay. Stick to the length, format and subject matter as requested. If your goals are requested, include short term and long-term goals.
Exams: Some financial awards require the writing of government exams. High academic criteria scholarships may require specific exam results, such as the Euclid Math Exam results.
Marks / Percentages and Scores: A main criteria for a major entrance scholarship is a high GPA (grade point average). Some scholarships request that candidates be at the top percentile of their graduating class. A good procedure is to discuss your candidacy with your counsellor.
Nominations: Some financial awards, usually high academic or entrance scholarships, require that the school or Principal nominate only one student for a specific award. Financial awards that require nominations usually have early deadline applications.
Service: More scholarships/awards/bursaries are including service in their criteria. Service may include volunteer activities in school or in the community. Brainstorm and check with a friend. Quite often we do not give ourselves credit for what we have accomplished.
POST-SECONDARY FINANCIAL PLANNING HANDBOOK - 9 -
Attention All Students Applying For A Financial Award
Scholarship and Financial Award Selection committees consider both academic achievement and community involvement. Therefore, volunteer work, work experience, extracurricular
involvement and student leadership activities are essential to success.
OBTAINING A LETTER OF REFERENCE FOR AFINANCIAL AWARD
Try to get a mix of supporting letters, ie: a teacher, an employer; someone from the community. Make certain that the people you choose will speak positively about you. It is difficult for people to write a letter for someone about whom they have reservations. The tone will likely be evident in the letter. Ask the person if they have any reservations about writing a letter of recommendation or support on your behalf.
Provide the person with a summary of details about yourself (Request for a Letter of Reference Form—can be picked up in the Career Centre or downloaded on the PM Career Centre Wiki under “Handbook”). Even if they don’t use all of the information it will help them to make general statements about you.
Specify those things that you would like to see included in the letter. These might include the following:
a) your character
b) your accomplishments
c) unique characteristics
d) volunteer experience and service, clubs, etc.
e) awards and prizes
f) academic standing if it is relevant to that person
g) academic qualities if it is relevant
h) interests as they relate to the award
It is common courtesy to provide as much information as possible and to request as early as possible, any documentation or reference letters you may require.
Please see the “Request For A Letter of Reference”. This form must be completed before requesting a letter of support. Teachers and administrators will not provide letters without this completed form.
POST-SECONDARY FINANCIAL PLANNING HANDBOOK - 10 -
WRITING A LETTER OR ESSAY FOR AFINANCIAL AWARD
If specific information is required, pay careful attention that all details are covered. The committee screening the applications will be looking specifically for that information.
Keep the tone of the letter or essay formal. If it is a letter, use a standard business letter format. If it is an essay, use the writing process as outlined on page 9. The committee will be looking for content, but they will also be influenced by style.
You should consider including the following:
how specific subjects have influenced you
a brief outline of your interests, hobbies and activities
a brief summary of positions and offices held by you in school, youth organizations
and/or the community
a short statement of your purpose in seeking to attend a specific post-secondary
institution
information concerning awards, scholarships and prizes won by you in any field
details of employment in the last two years
details of any volunteer work you have done
Type the document, unless otherwise stated. If you are handwriting the final copy, make certain it is neat and legible. Use 8 ½ X 11 inch white paper, one side only.
Do not assume that the committee will read between the lines. If you have done something noteworthy, include it. Most financial awards will have many worthy candidates. The better job you do of selling yourself, the better chance you will have of receiving an award.
