Dean’s Dash Dr. Ross Dickens, Dean College of Business and Global Affairs The lights went out! We finished eating and the guest speaker, Mr. Chris Holmes, CEO of FirstBank finished his encouraging remarks. I had announced the first few honorees . . . . and the lights went out. The emergency lights soon came on and the MKT 377 students (see p. 3 for their picture in the darkened ballroom) had graced us with table centerpieces with candles. So, since the participants in the CBGA Spring Honors Banquet were all gathered and no danger was apparent, we kept the evening going. Such is life and such is business and politics. When adversity hits, when the environment or competitors or regulators throw you something unexpected, you react and continue toward the goal. In the end, the night was what everyone hoped it would be—memorable . . . just not exactly in the way we anticipated. I will take this space to thank again those involved in April’s Captain’s Challenge. CBGA’s goal was to raise $10,000 (to have another $10,000 in matching funds). We had over $12,000 donated and we will get word on the matching gifts soon. Your generosity is gratefully appreciated. Our students’ activities again fill most of the newsletter as we share the amazing educational opportunities the students enjoy under the faculty and staff members’ directions. We ask your help to connect us with speakers and companies throughout the state so we can provide more extracurricular events. Send us your news. The newsletter editors would love to expand the alumni portion on page 8 of the newsletter. Let us know of intern and job possibilities for students. Send prospective undergraduate and MBA students our way. Help us to be in a good position to react when the next unexpected event occurs. Eleven CBGA students visited the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) and E&Y (a CPA firm) in Nashville in March.

Students learned about services the NASBA provides related to the CPA exam and CPA licensure, as well as other services the NASBA provides to the accounting industry. Students who attended are pictured above and are as follows: Megan Vineyard, Ty Smith, Janki Patel, China-Marie McFall, Alisa Quayle, Lance Roby, Anna Sills, Yuxin Zhang, Julia Borrego, Ashley Coots. FMA Students Compete at Quiz Bowl

CBGA students (l to r) Ty Smith, Claire Oliver, and Alisa Quayle worked on the

CBGA Finance Students in Time Square Pictured above (l to r) are CBGA finance students Brittany Dean, Meredith McMasters, Ty Smith, Wyatt Jones, Zach McLeod, and Eric Yates in Time Square after a day at the G.A.M.E. Forum in New York City, March 23–24, 2018. Dr. Ross Dickens accompanied the group to the investment-focused student conference. Much of the cost of the trip was paid through the CBGA experiential learning fee fund as a reward for the students’ outstanding work managing the TVA Investment Challenge Fund within the FIN 411, Portfolio Management, course.

CBGA Students Attend Model United Nations

Four CBGA students participated in the 2018 Sothern Regional Model United Nations (SRMUN) alongside approximately 500 delegates from over 40 universities and colleges who were representing 80 countries. UTM represented the country of Jordan and negotiated resolutions on issues of water, renewable energy, urban efficiency, and radiological security. The event was held April 12–14, 2018, in Charlotte, NC.

In addition to their participation, the UTM delegation from Jordan earned a team award for “Outstanding Position Paper.” Only 10 of these awards were given, thus highlighting the students’ outstanding research and writing skills.
