Finding the Next Generation of HeroesIn my life I've often been the recipient of good karma. It seemslike pure luck falling from the sky, or wherever it comes from. Ithappened recently when a group of students approached theLeague wanting to use us as their subject for a class assignment.For an investment of a few hours of our time, LWV‑TX Board andAustin League member Grace Chimene and I received a hugewindfall.

The student team helped us put a name on what we are all striving to do: Find theNext Generation of Heroes. Noting that the "League has been one of the mostformidable forces of citizen empowerment," theteam saw our numbers have dwindled since the1960s and we need to pass the torch to what

1960s and we need to pass the torch to whatappears to be one of the least politically activegenerations, ever. They pin our vigorous survival onthree groups: our active membership, millennials,and Hispanic/ Latino eligible voters. They suggestwe must engage them both in‑person and digitally. Thank you team leader Erik Vagshenian for yourinsightful report and suggestions. I'm happy toreport that we are already lighting that torch! Save the Date for a Special September 18, 2016League Kickoff MeetingThe annual meeting to preview the 2016 ‑ 2017League year is one you will remember for the rest of the year! We are very proud it isbeing planned and executed in collaboration with several university organizations andwill be hosted in the Bass Lecture Hall in the LBJ School Building/LBJ Library on theUT Campus.

Doors open at 1:30 pm for pre‑program mingling andrefreshments. Student organizations will also be sharinginformation about their activities. This year the programfrom 2‑4 pm features three outstanding speakers who willaddress voting rights in the US and Texas. UT Law School'sAmerican Constitution Society (ACS) assisted us byarranging for Nancy Abudu, Director of Legal Operations forACLU in Florida, and Chad Dunn, chief litigator for plaintiffsin the recently decided Texas Voter ID Case, to inform us.

Rounding out the group is Cassandra Champion of the Texas Civil Rights Project whoworks on Texas Motor Voter Act voter registration enforcement. LBJ School organizations, including the Feminist Policy Alliance and the Public AffairsAlliance for Communities of Color, are actively involved in planning and executing theevent with us, and serve as our hosts on campus. You can see that we are already�inding that next generation! Following this excellent group of speakers, from 4‑5 pm Travis County Tax Assessor‑Collector/Voter Registrar and valued League member Bruce Elfant will lead anoptional Volunteer Deputy Registrar training session open to League Members,students, and anyone else interested in becoming a VDR. Our Voter Registration Director June Conway is in hyper‑drive setting up newand expanded voter registration events. She always needs more VDRs andvolunteers, but has managed to collect quite a stable to assist her. All those VDR"roundups" have paid off!Our new Communications Director Charlotte Slack is leading the way for more,better, and improved communication about what we are doing and sharing thatwith a greater audience. Voters Service UpdateThe First Vote Team was busy this summer distributinginformation to teens through the Boys and Girls Clubs, AustinHomeschoolers, Parks and Recreation Centers and ReligiousInstitutions. Schools are continuing to contact us forpresentations and tabling at events, which included the Back toSchool Bash at Palmer Events Center recently. We have beensharing the Handy Dandy Guide For Voting in the November 8,2016 Election which is an excellent tool created by LWVTX.

Thank you to Grace Chimene and Cinde Weatherby for their work to localize theinformation for Austin. You may want to pick up a copy because the information isvaluable as you explain why it is important to vote and the process for voting. Itincludes such topics as:

Can I Vote: How do I Register?When and Where do I Vote?What is the General Election and Why Vote?Texas Voter Resources

We also prepared instructions and materials for the October 4th Mock PresidentialElection in Travis County High Schools and Elementary Schools. This election givesstudents the opportunity, at an early age, to experience the process of electing acandidate. Teachers will take the students through the two‑step process ofregistration and balloting. All students will get a registration card that they mustpresent on Mock Election day in order to vote. The results will be aggregated with allparticipating schools and shown on Access TV. Voter Registration EventsWe staffed a festival at Givens Park on July 16th for CAKE(Creativity/Abundance/Knowledge/Evaluations), anorganization working to empower women and girls throughmusic and the performing arts. We didn't capture many newvoters, but distributing information and promoting the LWVmission is our parallel goal and many of the folks attendingexpressed their appreciation for that. Tireless CindeWeatherby and Saundra Ragona answered the call.

The Back to School Bash on August 6th at Parmer Events Center was a huge success.We harvested 55 new voters and voter updates, thanks to the enthusiasm of VDRs andLWV voters service activists and others who answered the call. Kudos to LWVmembers Mara Coleman, Elizabeth Cooper, Kathy Fitzgibbon, Cindy Hintikka, Katherine Hoffman, Mara Hoffman, Penny Koo, Lynn League, Miriam Mora,Cindy Schauffenbuel and our VDR partners Danielle, Bardgette, Char Dison and Laura Mohammad.

Live in an Apartment? Travis County Voter Registrar Bruce Elfant has sent a letter toTravis County Apartment Managers asking for their assistance by agreeing to conductvoter registration activities at their apartment complex. You can make this happen bymaking inquiries if no effort is forthcoming and offering to help if it is. Apartment‑dweller voter registrations are way lower than single‑occupancy. Get those numbersup in your complex! Tuesday September 27th is "National VoterRegistration Day". The LWVAA can't be everywherebut any member VDR can orchestrate a "do‑it‑yourself"VR event. Let me know if you have a target location andI'll see that you have guidance and the where‑with‑all toput it together. Let's go leagueniks! It's what we do! Some members are doing their own thing, registeringvoters in neighborhood, church, school, workplaces. Letus know how many you've harvested! Volunteer Deputy Registration TrainingVolunteers needed to become Volunteer Deputy Registrars. VDRs help register eligible citizens to vote by distributing,reviewing, and accepting completed voter registrationapplications. This training must be repeated every two years. Ifyou haven't been trained since January 1, 2015, for the termJanuary 1, 2015 ‑ December 31, 2016, new training is required.

You may become a VDR or renew eligibility by attending a one‑hour training session held the �irst Tuesday of each month at 10:30 am, 12:30 pm and6:30 pm. Training is at the Travis County Voter Registrar's of�ice located at 5501Airport Blvd, [map] Austin, TX 78751. Upcoming dates are Tuesdays, September 6 andOctober 4. Bruce Elfant, our Travis County Voter Registrar,offers extra VDR training the second Saturday of eachmonth from 10:00 ‑ 11:30 am. (usually ends at 11:15am). The next sessions will be September 17 and October 15 at the First UnitarianUniversalist Church, 4700 Grover, [map] Austin. Space is limited. Sign up at this link. Programs:What to Look for this YearGet Out the Vote!Programs are just getting lined up for the coming year. Theimmediate goals is to help Voters Service chairs with registrationdrives in order to Get Out the Vote! Please take a look at the listof registration events and �ind at least one that �its yourschedule. Everyone can �ind something to do to help increasevoter participation this November. Take a look at the Texas StateLeague of Women Voters' materials for

GOTV (lwvtexas.org), many of which were created by Grace Chimene. And if you arenot already a Volunteer Deputy Registrar, be sure to put that on your "to do list" totake the VDR training at the Kickoff meeting in September, so you can leave with yourVDR button! people registered and to the polls for this year's election is important, as well asworking to change voter participation over the long term. Partnerships to increase Value of VotingI am in the process of planning a general meeting for October 2 to help us connectwith some local organizations that work with populations typically underrepresentedat the polls. One goal is for us to learn about how we can partner with them toincrease citizen participation in voting and provide education about the importanceand value of voting for their communities to get to the polls on election days. Weshould also become more informed about what organizations such as FoundationCommunities, El Buen Samaritano, and many others, actually do, and how we cansupport their work. Building more local connections and collaboration will help us inboth areas. Look for more information about the GOTV meeting and workshop tomake sure that we all know as much as we can about strategies to make a differencethis fall. Redistricting through an Independent Citizen's CommitteeAfter the election, it will be time to start planning a state study on the role ofindependent citizens' committees in redistricting. Materials for this study should beavailable later this year or in early 2017. Ladders of OpportunityAfter January, we will resume programs on Ladders of Opportunity, our efforts tolearn more about how local organizations are helping to provide more support forfamilies and individuals educationally, economically, and culturally. These Ladders ofOpportunity meetings will include smaller meetings that are known in the League as"unit meetings." If you would like to host a unit meeting, sometime during Januarythrough May, please let me know. Unit Meetings There have been requests to do more with "Unit meetings," small group meetings ontopics in which the membership is interested. For example, many members areconcerned about our environment and the ways in which we are using‑‑or overusing‑‑our natural resources, especially water. Our immediate past president, Carol Olewin,is a member of the City of Austin Task Force on Flood Mitigation, and I hope toorganize a meeting during which we can hear from this group. As ever, I am going to need a lot of help with our programs. Please let me know if youwould like to be on a program committee that will start meeting after our Kick‑Offmeeting. Maxine's Musings:Presidential Politics

As we approach the November election, what are we to make of the currentpresidential campaigns? Most people I talk to regardless of party, are uneasy, evenexpressing disgust with the tone of the campaigns.

The League of Women Voters has always stood for good governance, an informedelectorate, and fair election campaigns. It may be pie in the sky, but to achieve thosegoals, the League, local and state, conducts debates with all candidates invited.

Sometimes, we have been criticized for including so‑called fringecandidates in those debates. I remember when Leslie Cochran,the homeless cross‑dresser, who was an attraction on Congressand Sixth Street, ran for mayor twice. We included him in ourdebates on Access TV and he did an acceptable job. The �irsttime, he came dressed, or undressed, in his usual street costume,which sort of unhinged us! The second time he ran, I was thedebate moderator. He was more appropriately dressed then.After the debate he told me he was grateful to the League

because it was the only organization that gave him the opportunity to participate!

Since 1952, I always enjoyed watching the presidential election campaigns and thedebates unfold on TV, but I now �ind myself jaded. Current practice in national electiondebates are really not debates in the opinion of many, including me. In brief, debatesare supposed to argue the pros and cons on issues. In recent years, they seem to havedescended into more personal attacks, sometimes, vicious, against an opponent, oftenhaving nothing to do with the issues at hand, rather than discussing the differingpoints of view and offering possible solutions to problems we face. The candidatesseem rarely to answer speci�ic questions, but dance around them. Big promises areoften made with no suggested ways to pay for them. I believe this makes voters ill‑informed to make important decisions on the leadership of the country. LWVUS usedto conduct the debates in the 1980's. We were selected because of our knowledge onhow to conduct them with integrity and a non‑biased approach. The League bowedout when the political parties and the media decided to alter the way the debates wereconducted. This created a more biased approach and opened the door to the currentattack syndrome. I still get questions from people asking why we no longer offerdebates for presidential candidates, which they regarded as the best.

Then there are the usual pundits on TV arguing with each other, interrupting eachother, and prognosticating what they think the future portends. Watching them canmake one dizzy! Another problem: the moment a president is seated at her/his deskin the Oval of�ice, the speculations begin on who will be running in four years thatdrags on and on!

I think it may have been Winston Churchill who said in a democracy, one muddlesthrough! I think we will muddle through this one and I rely on Americans' commonsense to make it right.
