The hot gases from the furnace after loosing heat in different areas goes through the Electrostatic Precipitators (ESP) where Fly ash is trapped. The clean gas goes through the chimney of 275 m height.

    Desalination Plant:

Desalination Plant works on Reverse osmosis principle. In this system a high pressure pump pumps the feed water against membrane, which allows passing of good quality water (permeate) through it and rest water goes as reject. Considering 35% RO recovery, about 171 MLD sea water shall be required for producing 60 MLD of desalinated water.

8.1 From explosions, spillages, fires etc from storage, handling, use or production of hazardous substances

Yes Risk Analysis was carried out as a part of EIA study. Risk mitigation measures are accordingly suggested.

8.2 From any other causes No -

8.3 Could the project be affected by natural disasters causing environmental damage (e.g. floods, earthquakes, landslides, cloudburst, etc.)?

Yes The project site is falling in seismic Zone V (Very high risk earthquakes). Based on the Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Assessment (PSHA) carried out for the project site, recommendations were made for the strong ground motion at the site in terms of design response spectra for various return periods along with appropriate strong motion time histories.

The Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA) values for the Maximum Considered Earthquake (MCE) and Design Basis Earthquake (DBE) conditions are estimated as 0.34 g and 0.09 g, respectively, for both horizontal components from PSHA.

However, considering that the project site lies in Zone V of the IS: 1893 (Part-I 2002) the PGA may be adopted as 0.36 g and 0.18 g for MCE and DBE conditions, respectively. A factor of 2/3 may be considered for vertical component.

Necessary precautionary measures would be built-in / implemented.
