Executive Summary
Through the creative efforts and hard work of the Department of Safety recruitment staff, Deputy
Lanceferd Alexander, Detective Sheri Duran, Captain Dale Chavez, Captain Desmond Fulton,
Cadet’s Carlson, Balding, and Deeds made 2012 a great recruitment year. Recruiter’s
participated in several hundred community outreach events locally and throughout the state.
Their efforts have positioned the Denver Police, Fire, and Sheriff Departments with a strong
applicant base reflective of the Denver Community.
Denver Fire “open house” activity sponsored by Captain Chavez allowed for an inside look at
the Denver Fire Department. This activity created a forum of communication and understanding
of life in the fire house. Captain Fulton continued a strong recruitment presence for DFD by
reaching out to department employee groups and facilitating test preparation activity for future
exam periods.
The Denver Police Department maintained a strong community based recruitment effort focused
on area youth through the established Goodwill Program in coordination with Denver Public
Schools. Detective Duran worked tirelessly to educate area youth on law enforcement careers
and the benefits of good decision making.
Deputy Sheriff Lanceferd Alexander continued to share the Denver Sheriff Department message
by being visible at almost all Denver community related events and activities. Deputy Alexander
has established a great community partnership that is benefitting the DSD with talented new
hires from diverse backgrounds. Deputy Alexander is a role model to the Cadet Program and by
his participation helped to make the 2012 Cadet Academy one of the best ever.
The Cadet Recruitment trio of Carlson, Balding, and Deeds grew the Cadet Recruitment program
inside the Denver Public School system. On-site visits before, during, and after school helped to
distinguish this program from any other. The creative minds and endless work hours that were
committed to cadet recruitment will have long-term benefits for the City and County of Denver.
The application periods for Denver Police and Fire were closed during 2012. The Denver
Deputy Sheriff application periods during 2012 drew 1,533 applicants. The Public Safety Cadet
Program received 318 applicants for 2012. The demographics of the applicant pool are defined
on pages 13 and 14 of this report.
The recruitment section continued to build upon established recruitment standards and best
practices to seek out the best applicants for the Department of Safety. With oversight and
assistance provided by Safety HR and the leadership of Marinda Kincaid, Director, recruitment
activity was well supported for Denver Police, Fire, and Sheriff Department’s.

Deputy Sheriff Lanceferd Alexander, Deputy Sheriff Recruiter
(Sheriff Recruitment: October 2011 to present). Deputy Alexander
maintains a strong community presence in the Denver area with his
active participation in mentoring and
youth programs.
Detective Sheri Duran, Police Officer
Recruiter (Police Recruitment: January 2005 to December 2012).
Detective Duran has engaged the Denver Public School system
through the Goodwill Outreach Program and other recruitment
activities targeting Denver area youth.
Captain Dale Chavez, Firefighter Recruiter (Fire Recruitment:
November 2010 to June 2012). Captain Chavez has promoted the
Denver Fire Department to the Denver community by showcasing
several of the local fire stations throughout the year. Captain Chavez
continues to seek opportunities to improve the hiring practices of the
Denver Fire Department.
Captain Desmond Fulton, Firefighter Recruiter (Fire
Recruitment: July 2012 – Present) Captain Fulton was appointed to
Denver Firefighter Recruiter mid-year. His efforts include
employee group outreach, providing assistance with test preparation
to fire applicants, and serving on the DFD interview panel for new
hires.
Cadet Commander Aaron Carlson, Cadet Leader Taylor Balding,
Cadet Daniel Deeds led the cadet recruitment effort for 2012. The
cadet trio hosted Denver Public Schools open house events and
facilitated hiring processes for the cadet program.
Marella McCarthy, Administrative
Support Assistant (Safety Recruitment:
September 2011 to December 2012). Marella provided recruitment
and cadet program administrative assistant duties and assisted safety
wide to provide assistance wherever needed.
Donald Ronyak, Jr., Recruitment and Interim Cadet Program
Director (Safety Recruitment: November 1999 to Present). Don is a
member of the Society for Human Resource Management and is
certified as a Senior Professional in Human Resources. During 2012,
under the domain of Safety Human Resources, Don was responsible for
recruitment and cadet program operations.

capable of providing fire and law enforcement services. The recruitment staff focused on the
Denver community and diverse forums throughout the State of Colorado.

Recruitment Database
During 2012, Safety recruitment received over 5,000 interest forms from potential applicants
expressing an interest in law enforcement or fire service careers. The Denver Police Department
received over 2,800 interest forms the Denver Sheriff Department received over 900 interest
forms and the Denver Fire Department received over 1,500 interest forms. The interest forms
which help create our recruitment database allow for a sustainable recruitment effort year-round.
Information captured by the interest forms indicated our top applicant referral sources for 2012
were website referrals, family/employee referrals, independent research, and military transition
resources. Additionally, over 1,000 interest forms were forwarded to various employee groups
within safety for additional follow-up. Potential applicants have the option of selecting to have
their contact information shared with employee groups for more information and resource
sharing.
