China Geography• China is in Asia• The Huang He (Yellow River) flows across China to the
Pacific Ocean• It picks up yellow dirt as it crosses and the water turns
yellow• Huang He flooded every year leaving fertile soil behind• Farmers could grow large amounts of food on small farms
• Only about one-tenth of China can be farmed• The rest of the land is :– mountains (Himalayas, Kunlun Shan, and Tian
Shun)– Desert (Gobi)– Plateau (high, flat land)
• The mountains and deserts closed off China to the rest of the world, separating them from other people
• The mountains and deserts helped shape Chinese history
• Anyang was China’s first capital under the Shang Dynasty

• Built the first capital—Anyang
• A dynasty is a line of rulers from the same family
• People were divided into three groupsThe king and his familyThe warlords and aristocratsFarmers (few were artisans and traders)
• Aristocrats are nobles whose wealth came from the land they owned
• Warlords are military leaders who command their own armies
• They passed their land and power to the next generation
Chinese Language
• Pictographs—characters that stand for objects
• Ideographs—they join two or more pictographs together to represent an idea
• The earliest Chinese writing is found on oracle bones (animal bones)
Zhou Dynasty
• The Shang Dynasty had a huge gap between the rich and poor
• The kings treated people badly, and they rebelled to form a new dynasty
• Zhou kings were similar to Shang rulers• The Zhou had a bureaucracy—made up of
appointed officials who are responsible for different areas of the government.
Religion
• The Chinese believed the king was their link between heaven and earth
• The king’s job was to carry out religious rituals
• This led the way for a new kind of government
• Mandate of Heaven—the king was chosen for his talent and virtue
• Under the Mandate of Heaven the people expected two things:
– 1. The king would rule the proper way—called Dao• His duty was to keep the gods happy
– 2. It gave the people and the king important rights

Chinese Dynasties• Zhou- lasted for 800 years.– King was in charge, had to protect people and keep
spirits happy– Mandate of Heaven: law that gave King power, he had
to keep the gods happy– Time of warring states: territories fought with
eachother, fought with swords, spears, crossbows, saddle/stirrup
• Qin Dynasty: powerful leader that used ‘Legalism’ with harsh punishments– Built roads, made universal money– Started the ‘Great Wall’ to keep out invaders– When he died his sons lost power and there was
war
Han Dynasty

Han Dynasty (206 BC-220 AD) • Threw out a lot of Qin’s harsh punishments• Civil Service: created tests to get the jobs (favored the rich)
• Population grew because of agricultural success • Aristocrats bought more land and farmers had to
pay rent to live on it• New developments: waterwheels, steel, paper,
acupuncture, rudder to steer ships
