Admission to the First Year of SchoolChildren who will be five years of age as of August 31 st of any school year shall attend the first year of school in the fall of that year unless both school officials and parents agree that in the best interest of the child, s/he should remain out of school until the following year.

TransferWhen transferring out of the school, parents must notify the school at least three days prior to moving. This will give the school enough time to prepare necessary papers of transfer. If moving to another location parents must notify the school of a change of address.

Attendance Regular attendance and being on time to school are two habits that significantly impact student achievement. Please reference CFLA’s attendance policy.

AbsencesWhen students reach a total of 5 unexcused absences or any combination of 19 excused or unexcused absences they may be reported to the County Attorney's Office as truant and the student’s parent may be cited. If a student is absent ten 10 days, the school will notify parents in writing.

To ensure that each child has the best opportunity to be a successful learner all students should be in class every day unless they are ill. It is very important that the school be notified of any absence before the start of the school day. Voicemails may be recorded 24-hours a day. When reporting an absence the parent must identify the child’s name, grade, reason, and date of the absence along with a phone number where the parent can be reached should additional information be needed. If notification is not received the absence will be marked as unexcused until a parent calls in or sends a signed note with all of the aforementioned information.

To reinforce the importance of learning and encourage students to keep up in their assignments, parents are urged to schedule doctor, dentist, and other appointments at times that do not conflict with the school schedule. It is the responsibility of the student to make up all missed assignments after an absence in a timely manner. If a student is unable to attend school and seeks his or her assignments, the parent should contact the front office or email the teacher before noon. These requests will be honored at the end of the school day. Each teacher will have an established makeup policy, including appropriate deadlines, for missed work.

Extended AbsencesParents must contact the school if their child will be absent for an extended time period. Unauthorized absence from school is considered truancy and will be treated as such. After 10 days of consecutive unexcused absence, the student will be dropped from the class rolls and/or legal action may be taken in accordance with Governing Board policy.

Parent/Student Check OutFor the school to keep students safe and to comply with state safety guidelines, a parent must sign their child out when he or she leaves school during the school day for any reason. If it is necessary for another adult to check out the student (in a non-emergency situation), parental permission must be received by the school office and the parent’s designee must have proper identification. The school will call the child to the office once the parent or their designee arrives at the school.

TardinessIf a student is late for school (after the tardy bell), he/she must report to the office before going to the classroom. The student will be given a pass to take to the classroom teacher. Excessive tardiness may result in an unexcused absence.

Bell Schedule

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday Friday and Other Half Days8:00 AM – 2:45 PM 8:00 AM -12:30 PM

DismissalIn case of illness, injury or emergency, a child may be dismissed from school during the school day. Teachers may not give dismissal permission at any time. This is the responsibility of the building principal or her designee.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Lost and FoundA great deal of time is spent during the school year trying to locate owners of lost articles of clothing, etc. Children's clothing and footwear should be clearly marked with their name. Articles that are not claimed in a timely fashion will be given to service organizations. Lost and Found is located in the main office.

SuppliesCFLA provides all of the supplies needed for day-to-day activities. Students are expected to take care of these supplies to the best of their ability.

Teacher ResumesCFLA retains a copy of all instructional staff resumes. These are available to all stakeholders upon request.

DRESS CODETo promote school unity, pride and the expression of each student’s individuality through good character and academic achievement, CFLA has adopted a School Uniform and Dress Code for all students grades K – 8th.

10. Any Dress Code violation will result in a lunch detention.

11. CFLA’s administration has the final decision on whether a student is compliant with the Dress Code. Parents will be notified if a student is in violation of the Dress Code. Students are expected to fulfill any reasonable request by the admin-istration to become Dress Code compliant. Repeated disregard of the Dress Code will result in suspension.

TelephoneShould you find it necessary to telephone your child at the school, the message will be relayed to him/her. If possible, all instructions should be given to your child in writing before s/he leaves home in the morning.Teachers may be reached one half-hour before school opens in the morning, or immediately after school is dismissed. (Please note that teachers may be on duty at these times on certain days.) A message may be taken at any time for a teacher. Unless there is an emergency, teachers will not be interrupted during the school day. Children are not allowed to use the telephone for outgoing calls except when the teacher or office personnel deem it to be necessary.

VisitorsVisitors, especially families of CFLA students, are welcome and encouraged to visit the school at any time. All visitors must report to the office upon entering the building. For the safety of our students, visitors will need to sign-in and present the office staff with a picture ID to obtain a visitors badge to visit any classroom or multi-purpose room. We know that children are easily distracted by visitors to the classroom or building, therefore when possible, please leave young children at home. Because teachers are responsible for all of the children in their classroom, we ask that you please schedule a conference before or after school hours.

HomeworkHomework can be both educational and practical. Assigned work at home is in keeping with the level of the class and the ability of the children. We design homework to be purposeful not onerous for children and parents.

8

Page 9: Table of Contents - Children First Leadership Academy · Web viewChildren First Leadership Academy is committed to a policy of nondiscrimination in relation to race, color, religion,

Homework assignments in the primary years are almost negligible in terms of time. In the intermediate years some homework is given, consistent with the level and ability of the child.

Instructional SuppliesThe occasion frequently arises when a student has lost or destroyed a book or materials purchased by the school. When this occurs, the student and his/her parents are held liable to replace the damaged or lost article. A receipt for payment will be given to the parent.

When a child has been sick over an extended period of time, books may be borrowed from the school so the child may continue his/her schooling at home. Please contact the building principal for assistance.

All students are taught how to use school supplies and equipment properly as part of the first six weeks of school training.

Kindergarten PhilosophyKindergarten is the creation of an environment that helps the child understand, act, and build on the world the child knows. The kindergarten program is an activity-centered program providing experiences that not only meet the child's needs but stimulates learning in all developmental areas - physical, social, emotional and intellectual. We believe these experiences are enhanced by a child's natural curiosity and desire to understand his/her world. We encourage our children and seek ways to motivate them to become involved in learning activities. The program is built on the sequential development and needs of children.

The program is systematic but free from constraints and undue pressure. This can be accomplished and will facilitate growth by providing the child with the space, the freedom, and the necessary materials to achieve goals. It is rich in language experiences, particularly speaking, listening and writing as these types of experiences form the foundation for reading and comprehension. Manipulative materials and hands-on activities are presented at every opportunity, for it is through experiences of touching and seeing that the comprehension of abstract ideas evolves.

STUDENT SERVICES, REPORTS TO PARENTSTesting

Throughout the coming year, students will participate in a variety of formative (daily) and summative assessments. These assessments assist us in planning instructional programs to meet the needs of the students. Every effort should be made for children to attend school when major summative assessments such as the Arizona State Testing program are being administered.

Parent - Teacher ConferencesThe home and the school should be mutually informed about the progress of each child. Report cards alone are not sufficient to do this job, but report cards combined with parent conferences allow both the teacher and the parent, in a joint endeavor, to program the child's work. CFLA will provide student-led conferences twice a year for their parents. In addition, a parent-teacher conference may be requested at any time. This conference can

9

Page 10: Table of Contents - Children First Leadership Academy · Web viewChildren First Leadership Academy is committed to a policy of nondiscrimination in relation to race, color, religion,

be requested by the teacher, principal, or parent and will be scheduled at the convenience of everyone concerned. We hope that each parent will feel welcome to call or email their child’s teacher at any time (please note that the teacher may not be able to respond immediately due to their classroom responsibilities) to discuss any matter pertaining to their child. If you wish a conference with your child's teacher or other school personnel please make appointment one or two days before the scheduled conference thus avoiding conflicts with other activities.

Reporting Pupil ProgressIn an effort to provide parents with as much information as possible about their child's progress, a report card has been developed, combined with parent conferences, to show how well a child is progressing in relationship to his/her ability and peers.Report cards are issued four times yearly, and each report covers approximately 9 - 10 weeks of work. Parents are asked to come to the school for conferences during the first and third quarters, to pick up and discuss their child’s progress. This private conference allows parents to ask more detailed questions, see their child's records and maintain open communication between the home and school in jointly planning for the child's growth. Parents should review the marks for personal and social development carefully as these marks relate directly to the progress a child is making in the academic areas. If a child is in one of the special programs, such as reading improvement or special education, supplementary reports will be issued each period he/she is in the program.

Interim Progress ReportsProgress reports may be sent home at any time during the school year. A warning notice will be sent to you if your child is failing or is doing unsatisfactory work. This is an invitation to you to discuss your child's progress in school with his teachers. Again, parents may also initiate a request for more information at any time.

Progress Reports and Ongoing CommunicationsA parent should not be receiving a report card that is a surprise at report card time. There should be ongoing communication between the parent(s) and the teacher in regards to student progress. With this in mind Children First Leadership Academy utilizes a progress report format to inform parents of their child’s performance.

Honor RollIn an effort to recognize and promote academic excellence, the school has established an honor roll. To be eligible, a student must have a "B" average or above. Students are informed of the honor roll system and carefully instructed to ensure an understanding of the specific goals and methods of computing the honor roll formula.

Promotion and Retention of StudentsPromotion from one grade to the next in grades K-8 is based upon the ability to succeed at the next grade level. When formulating a recommendation, each teacher will work closely with the principal. Above all, the recommendation must be in the best interest of the student.

Teachers will base their recommendation to promote or retain upon the following criteria:10

Page 11: Table of Contents - Children First Leadership Academy · Web viewChildren First Leadership Academy is committed to a policy of nondiscrimination in relation to race, color, religion,

• Successful completion of class assignments, projects and tests• Mastery of learning objectives• Achievement on standardized achievement tests• Age, maturity, and effort• Attendance• Reading fluency by end of grade three

If facts indicate that retention is in the best interest of the student's academic progress, close cooperation must exist between the parents and all school personnel involved. Each student will be given individual consideration. Retention decisions will be made only after a careful study of facts relating to all phases of the student's growth and development. The decision to promote or retain is that of the teacher. Only the Governing Board may overturn the decision to retain or promote a student.

Arizona’s “Move on When Reading” legislation requires schools to retain students in third grade if they score at the "Falls Far Below" level on the Az MERIT Reading Assessment. The law also included many stipulations about parents' right to appeal, students who may be exempt from the requirement, and the obligations of the school for students who may be in danger of retention as a result of this law.

The school’s philosophy is one that values a collaborative partnership between home and school. The school has a solid literacy curriculum, a strong assessment process, and individual support systems that are built into daily instruction. Parents will be kept informed of their child’s progress on a regular basis.

School LunchAll students must eat lunch at school. Students may bring their lunch from home. Families meeting federal income guidelines are eligible for free or reduced meals. Applications will be given to parents during enrollment and must be filled out every school year. All information is confidential.

Special Programs and ClubsSpecial programs will be offered which round out the school curriculum and assist the children in developing their interests and abilities. These special programs will include clubs, after school enrichment, and academics as well as social offerings.

ArtArt is an integral part of the CFLA program and is a vital part of the complete curriculum package. Curriculum mapping will show the way art at CFLA correlates with the other subjects.

Physical EducationWe believe firmly that Physical education leads to a well-developed healthy child. Physical education and developmental education are linked in the literature as mutually beneficial aspects of early childhood education. CFLA attempts to provide physical education twice weekly.

11

Field TripsAuthorized field trips that have an expressed educational value are part of the student's school experience. We plan these trips to supplement our curriculum. School buses are usually provided for these trips. Permission slips are required for every child before s/he leaves the school grounds. It is necessary that these be signed and returned promptly to the school by parents/guardians.

Speech TherapySpeech therapy is offered to those children in the school who need corrective speech programs.

Reading ImprovementRemedial reading is provided for those children who have experienced difficulty in the regular reading program. Trained personnel work with individual students or with small groups to help develop strategies and skills needed for success in reading.

Mathematics ImprovementRemedial math is provided for those children who have experienced difficulty in the regular math program. Trained personnel work with individual students or with small groups to help develop strategies and skills needed for success in math.

Parents' ConcernsIf you have any concerns regarding your child's placement, program, or behavior in school, you should immediately contact your child's teacher. In the event your concerns have not been answered to your satisfaction, you should then contact the behavior interventionist or principal of the school.NOTE: Because we strive to achieve classroom balance we cannot guarantee parent requests for a specific teacher placement.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

HealthNo internal medicine shall be dispensed or administered to any child by school personnel except by the nurse or office staff, upon written order of the physician who has examined and prescribed the medicine and a written note from the parent. Please do not send medicine to school with your child as generic medicines can be abused. Parents should bring any medication that needs to be dispensed during the day. All medicine must be brought to school by the parent and in the original container.A child should be kept home if s/he has a temperature of 100 or above, sore throat, ear ache, cough or cold, upset stomach, or skin rash. If these conditions arise when the child is in school s/he will need to return home. Parents will be notified so they can arrange to have their child picked up early from school. No child may go home to an unoccupied house. An ill child may be excused by the principal only into the company of a parent or person designated by the parent in writing. To ensure that the school can reach you, please keep your emergency contact list up to date.

Phoenix Children’s Hospital personnel are on campus and are available for all students, two to three days a week. Any medical questions should be directed to their office.

12

Emergency DrillsEach child’s safety and preparedness are objectives of education in all phases of school life. To this end fire, lock down, and evacuation drills are conducted in accordance with school and state guidelines. In the event of an actual emergency, students will be sent home. We will contact parents through the school messenger system. Announcements will be made in the same manner for school delays or closings. Once again, to ensure that we can reach you in any emergency, will you please advise the school any time you or your emergency contact person’s information changes.

Emergency InformationAt all times the school should be informed of whom to contact in case of emergency. It is essential that the school be provided a complete health record of each child and that we know who to call if the child becomes sick or is injured. At enrollment a form is provided for this purpose. If parents are to be out of town during a school day, they should notify the school indicating who will accept responsibility for the child in case of emergency. We keep an emergency contact list that is five contacts deep.

WALKING/BICYCLING TO SCHOOL1. Always ride your bicycle on the right side of the road. 2. Helmets should be worn when riding a bicycle.3. Never ride two on a bicycle.4. Children are to use sidewalks where possible.5. In the absence of sidewalks, children should walk facing oncoming traffic.

TRANSPORTATIONThe primary purpose of the school’s Transportation Department is to safely transport students to and from school. It takes shared cooperation and responsible actions by the bus driver, student, parent, teacher, principal, and the Transportation Department to achieve this goal. The Transportation Department staff commits to provide the safest buses and best-trained drivers that school resources allow. Drivers are required to meet training standards that exceed the requirements established by state and federal regulations. The Transportation Department and school rely on all of the students (supported by their parents) to follow procedures that contribute to the safety of everyone on the bus. Parents are responsible to ensure their children's safety prior to the arrival of the bus at the stop in the morning and on the way home from the stop in the afternoon.

Kindergarten StudentsBus drivers will only drop Kindergarten bus riders off at their designated bus stop with an older sibling student or if an adult is waiting at the location. Otherwise, Kindergartner will be returned to the school.

Instruments or other Large Items on the BusBecause space on buses is limited, there is no guarantee that students will be able to transport other large items on the bus.

RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Statement of Non-Discrimination and Equal Opportunity

matters concerning staff members, students, the public, educational programs and services and individuals with whom the Governing Body does business

Homeless StudentsNotice of Student Rights under the "McKinney Vento Homeless Assistance Act"

This federal legislation guarantees homeless children and youth the following:

Children First Leadership Academy’s Discipline Guide

Code of ConductWe expect all adults on our staff to be an example to students. This includes insisting on and displaying good manners toward children and each other. “Treat others as you would like to be treated” is more than a saying at Children First Leadership Academy. It is a way of doing things.

We believe that it is the responsibility of all adults involved with children in our school to model the behavior we expect from them.

The following Code of Conduct is an effort to clarify the behaviors that are not allowed at Children First Leadership Academy and the consequences associated with them.

In order to insure fair and consistent monitoring of discipline at Children First Leadership Academy a computerized listing of all offenses that have been brought to the attention of the principal is kept in Power School, our school’s record keeping system.. Children First Leadership Academy also makes every effort to keep parents informed and involved in any discipline procedure involving their child.

CELLPHONE AND ELECTRONICS DEVICE POLICYIn order to decrease distractions to the learning environment, protect the privacy of each student, and minimize the potential for cheating the Children First Leadership Academy has adopted the following policy: CFLA allows the possession of telecommunication and electronic devices by students on campus during the regular school day subject to the following rules:

1. Telecommunication and electronic devices are defined as cell phones, iPods, MP3 play-ers, or any similar device.

2. The device may NOT be kept on the student’s person. This means that the device must be kept in a purse, backpack, etc. and it may NOT be held by the student or kept in his or her clothes or clothing pockets. Further, the device must be kept out of sight at all times.

3. During the school day (defined as the time between a student’s arrival to and departure from campus), device must be turned OFF and may NOT be used under any circum-stances.

4. There is no reason a student should need to use a device during the regular school day. If there is an emergency the school will allow the student immediate access to a school or staff phone.

5. The student (NOT the school, its students, its staff, its volunteers, or its guests) is solely responsible for the loss, theft, or ruin of his or her device.

6. Students may turn their cellphones into their classroom teacher or administration without penalty and it will be given back at end of day.

7. CFLA personnel will ask a student to surrender device under either of the following cir-cumstances:

a. If the device rings, vibrates, or makes any type of noise (which would mean that the phone is turned ON, and therefore in violation of the policy), or

b. If CFLA personnel see the device (which would mean that the device was vis-ible or on the student’s person, and therefore in violation of the policy).

STUDENT REFUSAL TO SURRENDERCELLPHONE AND ELECTRONIC DEVICE PROCEDURE

Level 1: If a student violates the Telecommunications and Electronic Devices Policy, he or she will be asked by school personnel to surrender the device. If the student does so and it is that student’s first violation, the device will be returned to the student at the conclusion of the school day. If it is the second, third, etc. violation, the device will need to be picked up by the student’s parent.

Level 2: If the student refuses to surrender the device immediately, a campus administrator will be called to assist and the student will be taken to an administrator’s office. The administrator will attempt to convince the student to surrender the device. If the student does so, the device will be returned to a parent after, upon parent pickup if it is the first violation or it will be held until the end of the school year for subsequent violations. As a result of refusing to surrender the device immediately, the student will serve one after-school detention session after which his or her parent will need to pick the student up.

27

Page 28: Table of Contents - Children First Leadership Academy · Web viewChildren First Leadership Academy is committed to a policy of nondiscrimination in relation to race, color, religion,

Level 3: If the student refuses to surrender the device to the administrator, an attempt will be made to contact a parent to obtain assistance in convincing the student to surrender the device. If the student does so, the device will be returned to a parent pending parent pick if it is the first violation or it will be held until the end of the school year for subsequent violations. As a result of having to call a parent to bring about compliance with the administrator’s request, the student will serve three after-school detention sessions in which his or her parent will need to pick the student up.

Level 4: If the student still refuses to surrender the device after parent intervention, he or she will be suspended from school, recommended for expulsion, and not be allowed to return to school until after an expulsion hearing with the assistant superintendent, provided that hearing results in a reinstatement of the student. If the student is reinstated he or she will serve nine after-school detention sessions in which his or her parent will need to pick the student up.

Level 5: If the administrator is unable to contact a parent, the student will be taken to In-School Suspension for the remainder of the school day, suspended from school, recommended for expulsion, and not be allowed to return to school until after an expulsion hearing with the assistant superintendent, provided that hearing results in a reinstatement of the student. If the student is reinstated he or she will serve nine after-school detention sessions in which his or her parent will need to pick the student up.
