recovery, our energy footprint is very low. We have successfully reduced our plastic consumption by shifting to more eco-friendly alternatives like glass and paper, the yield of produce in our vegetable garden is supported by a hydroponic system and coral propagation projects have been consistently advanced.
In 2020 and beyond, we will maintain our sustainability initiatives and continue our search for alternatives to further reduce our impact on the environment. We will strengthen our commitment to preserve and protect the marine environment and reach out to neighbouring islands and resorts to support community programmes and NGOs.
In today’s challenging climate, the world needs organisations and businesses to lay importance on sustainable living. We are dedicated to take this route and work towards spearheading green practices together with our guests, partners and colleagues.

LEADERSHIP STATEMENTGoing back a long time, when the adverse impact of human activity on the environment began to be globally recognised, I became conscious that each one of us had a responsibility towards the environment. That’s when I decided never to be a free rider where nature and environment were concerned, and I felt that it was an obligation for each one of us to be sensitive to nature around us and preserve it for posterity. As climate change is happening and becomes ever more perceptible and the planet is under immense pressure, it is imperative that we take action now to reduce our negative impact on the environment in every way possible.
For me, operating in a surrounding such as Maldives was not only a privilege and a source of great satisfaction but I believed it also came with the responsibility to support the protection of its fragile beauty through sustainable practices and marine conservation.
At Reethi Faru we combine sensible luxury with these values and also put across this message to all our stakeholders. Our guests and staff are made aware of our initiatives and they are encouraged to participate in various educational and environmental activities; partners from the industry and the local community are supported in their own environmental campaigns; suppliers are inspired to balanced operations.
So far, we have made good progress on our long-term sustainability goals. Reethi Faru became a member of Green Pearls and received the Travelife Gold Certification (a leading certification initiative for tourism companies committed to reaching sustainability). We expanded our solar power installation and reached a capacity of 1MW (peak), making us one of the major producers of renewable energy in the country. Energy and Emissions
Energy management is one of the cornerstones of our sustainability efforts. We are dedicated to reducing our energy consumption and impact by improving our energy efficiency, moving to maximum renewable energy utlization, and driving behaviorial change - thereby reducing our carbon emissions.
With over 4,000 photovoltaic panels installed on the roofs of our staff accommodation, a great part of the energy production on the island is derived from renewable energy. A total capacity of 1 MW (peak) is used to provide power to some 80 guest villas.
The electricity produced from solar power is fed straight to the grid, as the use of batteries for overnight storage raises the cost of the installation tremendouly and moreover remains questionable in sustainability terms. We are hopeful that in future more efficient and less harmful batteries will be developed, providing a further reduction of our carbon footprint well worth investing in.
11
Reethi Faru Resort Sustainability Report 2020
In 2019 our solar plant already helped in saving 246,000 ltr. of diesel in 2019, resulting in carbon emission savings of 660t of CO2.
The remaining electricity required is produced by state-of-the-art energy efficient diesel generators, an energy source no Maldivian resort is yet able to operate without. The generators meanwhile are fitted with a heat exchanger system that helps us to produce hot water for the entire resort from waste heat and makes the use of electrical or gas boilers unnecessary.
Electric bikes and carts are in use within the island for baggage transfer, delivery services and housekeeping or maintenance errands.
Virtually all the lights used on the island are LED.
Our water desalination plant is fitted with an energy recovery mechanism which lowers the input of energy required for the process.
Our carbon footprint in 2019 was calculated to be 3493 tCO2e, resulting in an emission intensity of 38.52 kgCO2e/guest night, down from 49.93 kgCO2e/guest night in 2018.
98% of the lights around the island are LED based

Climate Change
Tackling climate change is an essential part of Reethi Faru’s sustainability strategy. We are cognizant of our responsibility in limiting global warming and work to improve resilience to impacts of climate change.
Our action towards climate change is addressed in the following ways:
Integrating climate change into our business strategy and brand pillars.
Promoting responsible and environmental friendly tourism by catering to eco-tourists.
Supporting the transition to a low carbon economy through energy and emission reduction.
Managing the impacts of climate chain on our surrounding eco-systems (e.g: bleaching of corals and restoration of house reef through artificial reefs)
Engaging and creating awareness across our value chain (e.g: environment day, tree planting drive, etc.)
13
Reethi Faru Resort Sustainability Report 2020
Water and Waste Water
The main source of water at Reethi Faru Resort is desalinated seawater through the process of reverse osmosis. We have four RO plants on the island; three of which have a capacity of 150 Cubic meter/day and is used for regular consumption, while one unit has capacity of 50 cubic meter/day and is used for drinking water.
Most of the wastewater produced is treated on the island in our state-of-the-art sewage treatment plant (STP). The wastewater is treated organically, and all treated water is reused for gardening and irrigation (using drip irrigation system).
At Reethi Faru Resort we see water as a precious resource and are committed to optimizing water consumption. We have taken up various initiatives to address water reduction. We have installed dual flushing systems and aerators for taps which significantly reduce water consumption, and have also driven behavioral changes by reducing laundry wash cycles.
14
Reethi Faru Resort Sustainability Report 2020
Every month we conduct different activities that engages our staff and guests in various environmental awareness initiatives. These include: Reef cleanups Tree planting Coral planting Awareness through screening of documentaries and guest presentations
In 2019, the total water consumption was 85,082 kilo liters (kL), resulting in a water intensity of 0.94 kL/ guest night. The total wastewater treated by our STP in 2019 was 50,960 kL.

Waste
Reethi Faru Resort is committed to reducing the impact from waste generated by our operations. We have a dedicated waste segregation facility on our island. We strongly believe in implementing the 3R’s of waste management wherever possible – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. We have a dedicated waste segregation facility on our island.
The main waste stream that we generate are:
Food waste
Plastic waste
Cardboard
Styrofoam
Paper
Horticulture Glass Others
16
Reethi Faru Resort Sustainability Report 2020
All food waste generated in our resort is segregated and directed to our in-house biogas plant, which generates biogas from food waste, which is in-turn used for cooking- thereby reducing the need for traditional, non-renewable cooking gas.
Reethi Faru Resort is working in collaboration with Parley for the oceans to manage and recycle plastic waste on the island, to avoid and intercept their entry into the marine ecosystems. Our goal is to minimize the import of single-use plastic altogether. Efforts towards plastic reduction was made in 2019, by shifting from plastic to glass, paper or tin can alternatives. We also have an in-house glass crusher through which glass waste is recycled and used as aggregate.

Reethi Faru Resort Sustainability Report 2020
Biodiversity and Marine ConservationAt Reethi Faru Resort, we recognize the role we play in protecting our local environment. Areas of high biodiversity, such as coral reefs are a foundation of our business, and we have been actively engaged in conservation projects that strengthen our commitment to safe-guarding the natural ecosystems with which we interact.
We have adopted scientific methods in monitoring and measuring baseline conditions and the impact of our conservation efforts. One such initiative is our artificial reef program, which help boost the growth of coral reefs around the island. Read more in the spotlight story – Enhancing our marine ecosystem through artificial coral reefs in this report.
Marine conservation efforts for certain megafauna species are also being made by working in collaboration with organizations like Manta Trust and The Olive Ridley Project for manta rays and turtles, respectively. These studies help the organizations monitor the populations (movement patterns, behavior, injuries, breeding, survival etc.) of the animals and in turn help in the conservation of these species.
We have recently set up and opened an Environmental and Marine Center. This center, which will also serve towards marine research, and will play as a useful educational tool to promote the importance of marine biology/ conservation. One of the goals for the center is to have an onshore coral nursery to grow the coral fragments in a controlled environment before putting it back on to the reef.
PLACEMENT OF WAVE-BREAKERS
To tackle the issues of beach erosion, wave-breakers are going to be placed in the critical areas around the island. Wave-breakers reduce the intensity of wave action on the shore and reduce coastal erosion. They are concrete structures that are designed to protect the gently sloping beach and placed in relatively shallow water. The unique design of these wave-breakers also doubles up as fish homes. They provide food and shelter for small fishes and sometimes promote coral growth as well.

Reethi Faru Resort Sustainability Report 2020
At Reethi Faru Resort, we focus on building our sustainability practices wherever possible. As such, we have started our own mushroom farm on-site. Using the by-products of our biogas plant (i.e. digester residue and the digester liquid), we are able to cultivate mushrooms suitable for consumption. Three different species of mushroom that are currently being cultivated in our own mushroom farm, namely, Pleurotus djamor (pink flamingo oyster mushroom), Pleurotus ostreatus (white oyster mushroom) and Hypsigus ulmarius (grey oyster mushroom).
Mushroom Farm
Hydroponics is the process of growing plants without using soil and has several environmental benefits over the traditional method. In this system, selected plants are grown using water, nutrients and a growing medium, such as rock wood or sponge. At Reethi Faru Resort, we use this system to grow some of the main ingredients used in salads with lettuce, basil, and other herbs and leaves already being harvested.
Hydrophonic Garden
Impressive examples of sustainable tourism including a biogas digester that uses food waste to generate gas. Very good economic rates of return. A possible example for other inhabited islands and resorts. And all of this on top of the other good sustainable things that are doing. Enlightening to see what goes on behind the scenes in running such a resort sustainably

Reethi Faru Resort Sustainability Report 2020
Enhancing Our Marine Ecosystem Through Artificial Coral Reefs.
SPOTLIGHT STORY
Coral reefs are the dominant ecosystem in the waters of the Maldives. They shelter thousands of different species of marine animals, corals and are an
important part of the heritage and culture of the country.
Climate change and global warming have affected reefs globally, and the Maldives is no exception. The rising temperature in the atmosphere is in turn raising the temperatures of the water which is causing the reefs from all over the world to lose their color- also knows as ‘bleaching’.
This has a catastrophic impact on all the marine creatures up the food chain, ultimately resulting in the loss of marine megafauna such as sharks and whales.
Therefore, conservation of coral reefs is of paramount importance; to preserve this ecosystem, which provides food, shelter and protection to about 25% of all marine organisms in the world.
CREATING ARTIFICIAL CORAL REEFS AT REETHI FARU RESORT
At Reethi Faru, we are aware of the importance of conservation of the marine environment and efforts towards this have been going on right from the construction phase. Artificial reefs are one of the best ways to restore the affected reefs, and aid in growth and regeneration of the corals around the house reef of an island.
Artificial reefs at Reethi Faru were made out of metal rebar structures (shaped as per the designer’s specification), which act as a stable substrate for the corals that are transplanted. Once the structures were ready, they were placed in the water. Small or large pieces of corals that were broken off or
20
Reethi Faru Resort Sustainability Report 2020
Enhancing Our Marine Ecosystem Through Artificial Coral Reefs.
SPOTLIGHT STORY
damaged, were collected and attached to these structures using cable ties.
After a couple of months, the fragments that settle on these structures showed incredible progress. This could be seen as the cable ties around the coral pieces started disappearing, as the corals began growing in size.
In another method, coral pieces were inserted in between the fibres of a polypropylene rope. This is called a rope nursery/ table nursery. The advantage of this method is that it prevents certain fish species (for example, parrotfish) from eating the freshly planted corals.
THE REWARDS
So far we have seen a lot of recovery and regeneration of corals around the house reef and the artificial reefs are taking on as well. Conservation of coral reefs is imperative to show the presence and survival of other marine life. Sharks are a sign of a healthy reef, and at Reethi Faru Resort we have various species of friendly sharks present, which in turn has a positive impact on other fish species in the reef. The most common sightings around the house reef are some curious turtles, eagle rays, sharks, schooling fish all around.
