Copywriting I’ll admit it – copywriting is a weakness of mine. I love studying it, but when it comes to actually putting words on paper (like this) I’m at a loss most of the time. Lucky for both of us, I’ve been able to surround myself with some pretty amazing copywriters at all levels and budgets. Each of the four people I am recommending here come from my personal rolodex and I have used all of them personally to write copy and make me a lot of money. One of them even wrote the sales letter that you read to buy this resource guide. Copywriting, like everything else, is an investment you should make in your business. It doesn’t matter how amazing your product is, if you can’t convey the right message – it will go unnoticed. Let me give you a few tips when it comes to working with copywriters and then I’ll share my budget copywriting tip if you’re strapped for cash. As with all outsourcers, you should ask for samples of previous work they have done. A lot of times copywriters will even put you in contact with previous clients so you can ask questions directly (if you ask). If you’re cash strapped, most of the time that means you’re going to be using an unproven or a new copywriter. While there is nothing wrong with that – don’t expect to make porsche wages with a pinto budget ;-) The thing I focus on above all else is dependability and ability to make a deadline. It doesn’t matter if they are the greatest writer in the world – if they can’t meet a deadline. My rule is one missed deadline leads to another and I RARELY hire someone again who misses the first one. The next thing to do is to go through their process and see how comfortable you feel interacting with the other person. Trust your gut – if you don’t get along during the first meeting, chances are that won’t improve and you should move on.

Finally, you need to be open and honest for what you expect from them and how you want to work together. For instance, I tell all the copywriters I hire I expect them to go through the product and answer any questions they have and THEN we’ll meet via phone or skype to fill in the holes. But something to consider – usually the more you pay for a copywriter, the more time and attention you’ll get. It makes sense doesn’t it – if you’re paying someone $97 chances are they aren’t spending an entire month on your letter like someone you pay $9,000 to. Don’t forget to allow enough time for the job to be done correctly. I am sure most copywriters could produce work on short notice. However, if you give them more time they’ll be able to give you more ideas, hooks, and angles to use. As a point of reference, the letter you read to get this guide took about a month to produce along with a few phone calls for clarification so plan accordingly. For those of you on a severe budget I offer you two choices: Choice #1: Learn copywriting yourself. There are a million courses out there – the book I personally use and recommend is Joe Sugarman’s The Adweek Copywriting Handbook: The Ultimate Guide to Writing Powerful Advertising and Marketing Copy from One of America's Top Copywriters. If you’re looking for a template and step by step instruction I give my full endorsement to Colin Theroit’s Sales Letter Template. It lays out a 19 step formula for you to follow and I know that template has sold close to a million dollars’ worth of products in a variety of niches. Put it to you this way, I keep the template on my desk and reference it anytime I’m writing or reviewing copy and I make sure that any of my high level coaching students own it. Colin has agreed to do a live copywriting training for us on Wednesday, May 15th at 8 PM EST. Here is the link to register: https://www1.gotomeeting.com/register/301757712

Choice #2: A copy critique. Most of the copywriters I’m going to share with you will do a critique of your copy for much less than writing the entire letter for you. This alone will save you hundreds of dollars (and pay for this resource guide over and over again). What happens is you write a sales letter and then allow them to critique it for you and offer suggestions on improvement. Most of the time this is done through a video recording that you can reference over and over again. So if you can’t afford to hire someone to write the whole letter, you can at least get their professional opinion on it at a discounted rate. The bottom line to me is that copywriting is something worth investing in because when it is done right it will always pay for itself over and over again. And now on to my personal recommendations of people to work with ….

I’ll admit it – I’m biased when it comes to Laura. I met her a few years back while speaking at an event and I was amazed how someone so talented could be hired for so little. She has written sales copy for me several times and it always does amazing (2 WSO of the Day and about $75,000 in total sales if I remember correctly). I’ve recommended her to all of my JV partners and she recently wrote a sales letter that brought in $70,000 in the first day alone. She is responsible for one of my largest and most successful launches ever and she is amazing to work with. Basically, what I’m trying to say is she’s awesome and someone you should find a way to work with.

I don't have set fees but, instead, I charge based on the project. You can email me with details of your project and we can set up a phone call or skype meeting. Please give me as much advance notice as you can. Letting me know two weeks before you launch is not ideal. I was brought up in the IM arena. I've written for several markets outside of IM and I've sold: coaching services, plugins, software, info products, you-name-it I've-sold-it.

Justin is my brother from another mother (did I just write that). He worked for one of my early mentors and has gone on to have a super successful career as a copywriter. From huge Clickbank launches, to WSO, to self hosted launches – I’ve seen him write for them all. He wrote this sales letter for me: http://trafficandconversionsummitnotes.com/ that converted at over 18% even with affiliate traffic and over 10,000 visitors. He gets my highest recommendation.
