It is clear that what students know is no longer the most important measure of the quality of their education.

The true test is their ability to engage with what they do not know and to devise solutions, using their capacity for

inquiry, critical thinking and problem solving.

— His Highness the Aga KhanChancellor, Aga Khan University

The Aga Khan University Examination Board (AKU-EB) is Pakistan’s first private autonomous examination body for Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSSC). The board also offers an innovative Middle School Programme (MSP) to help students transition into secondary school through project-based learning.

AKU-EB’s primary purpose is to improve the quality of education by delivering high quality, accessible syllabi and examinations across the nation, in accordance with the National Curriculum of Pakistan. AKU-EB qualifications are recognised and valued by leading higher education institutions, both nationally and internationally.

The Examination Board was established in August 2003 by the Aga Khan University, in accordance with Ordinance CXIV of the Government of Pakistan.

A bright future beckons

Each year, I am reminded that Pakistan is a nation full of talent, due to the extraordinary young students that push the boundaries of academic excellence during their secondary education. Nowhere is this more clearly reflected than in the minds and hearts of high achievers such as yourselves. By distinguishing yourselves among your peers, you have not only maintained and upheld the high standards of the Aga Khan University Examination Board’s assessment, but have also demonstrated your capabilities in a diverse array of academic subjects. This is cause for both optimism and hope among all of us. Congratulations to all of you! I also extend my gratitude to all those who have contributed to your success. Each of you represents your school, your family and your community, and I urge you to never forget the tremendous investments and sacrifices made by them to see you through this period. The education you have received aims to build global citizens equipped with 21st century skills who are self-motivated and confident decision makers -- in other words, leaders and pioneers in whatever field they happen to choose. As you enter a new chapter in your life, the critical thinking and problem solving skills you have learned have not only prepared you for your higher education, but also helped you to understand how to navigate the challenges in the future. Indeed, it is my hope that your accomplishments today will serve as the foundation upon which we build this country.

Congratulations to all of you, and may your success here catapult you towards new heights in the time to come!

Director’s MessageDiversity is our strength

Though the conclusion of a calendar year marks only a midpoint in the journey that a student takes during their academic year, it serves as an important reminder for all of us at the Aga Khan University Examination Board to reflect on the milestones and challenges seen over the past 12 months. In some ways, 2018 has continued in the grand tradition that I have come to expect: Our talented students have persevered through every challenge we have thrown at them and have not only proven that they are academically capable, but that the high standard they are held to is not misplaced.

Yet in other ways, this year has also distinguished itself as being one of unprecedented triumphs. The sheer diversity of students, whether it be by gender, socio-economic background or geographical location, who have performed brilliantly under the AKU-EB system serves as an affirmation that this examination board is one that is truly accessible to all Pakistanis. When, to give but one example, two students based in locations as distant from one another as Karachi and Chitral both scored impressively on the same subject examination, it is a validation of the fair and transparent environment under which each was able to prove their capability. I am thus proud to say that this year’s results show a level of uniform excellence across Pakistan to a degree we ourselves can scarcely believe.

Yet at the same time, I must also emphasize that these examinations mark the conclusion of only one stage of your education. I firmly believe that learning is a continuous, lifelong process that requires both commitment and a willingness to explore new ideas. While your studies under AKU-EB may have equipped you to become better learners, I also urge each of you to temper that ability with the humility and grace that will open new pathways to explore.

As each of you embarks on the next stage of your journey, know that I am personally proud of all that you have accomplished and wish you the very best in the years to come.

Congratulations!

Dr Shehzad JeevaDirector, Aga Khan University Examination Board

Maya AhmedFirst PositionSecond Position in Science Group High Achiever in BiologyMaryam Siddiqa Girls Higher Secondary School, Chenab Nagar

Maya Ahmed believes that the key to her success can be found in a quote by Quaid-e-Azam, Muhammad Ali Jinnah: “With faith, discipline and selfless devotion to duty, there is nothing worthwhile that you cannot achieve.” She says that the AKU-EB system was instrumental in helping her realise the importance of conceptual learning.

“It is my duty to continue making both my family and country proud. One day I hope to serve humanity and be able to guide people who are dealing with dark times in their own lives.”

Yumna KhabirSecond PositionP.E.C.H.S. Girls’ School, Karachi

“My success was due to focusing on the Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) in AKU-EB’s subject syllabi,” says Yumna Khabir. “I didn’t try to memorize anything, instead relied on multiple sources for information.” Her advice to students preparing for their examinations is to focus on the task itself, rather than the end result that they hope to achieve.

She also recommends that students devote a portion of each day towards revision in order to avoid having work pile up at the last moment. “Good mental and physical health is essential towards the fulfillment of anyone’s goals, so make sure not to let stress defeat you!”

Zehra AbbasThird PositionAl-Murtaza School, Karachi

“I made a mistake last year by taking my studies lightly,” confesses Zehra Abbas. “Because of this my result, while good, was not at the level I expected of myself. This year, I worked consistently and did justice to myself.”

As such, she believes that the most valuable lesson she was able to learn over the course of her examinations was not to grow overconfident. She also credits her school’s IT resources with helping her expand her horizons and says that clearing her concepts meant she had to go beyond textbooks: “I never felt the need to take tuitions or receive coaching because of all the tools available in school.”

From the very beginning of my SSC studies, I prepared for my examinations with the express goal of obtaining a top position in my subject group. My motivation was partially due to the fact that I find the field of Accounting to be fascinating, and partially because I was determined to follow the footsteps of a friend who also obtained a high score with AKU-EB. My next goal is to attain a similar result during my HSSC examinations, and perhaps even an overall top score!

Maryam IhsanFirst PositionFirst Position in Pre-Medical Group High Achiever in ChemistryNusrat Jahan College, Chenab Nagar

Maryam’s accomplishments are born out of her own passion for medicine. “Being a science lover, Biology, Physics and Chemistry were all my favourite subjects,” she recalls. “I knew that my destiny is to excel in the field of medical studies one day.”

Her advice to students is never to rely on rote-learning: “You will not find answers to AKU-EB examination questions in any book, unless your understanding of concepts is clear. Set your mind to the task and you will make it through!”

Fareeha HashmiSecond PositionHigh Achiever in BiologyAga Khan Higher Secondary School, Karimabad, Karachi

“The results I obtained during my SSC showed me that I was capable of becoming a top achiever if I focus on it,” says Fareeha Hashmi. “Since then, I have been working towards this moment.” Fareeha aspires to become a cardiologist, explaining that she sees this as a way to serve humanity: “Becoming a doctor entails caring for my patients as I would for my family. I want to be able to open a hospital in rural areas and provide affordable care.”

Alina FatimaThird PositionHigh Achiever in PhysicsAga Khan Higher Secondary School, Karimabad, Karachi

When Alina received news about her accomplishment, she says that a literal “ocean of happiness” overwhelmed her. “My anticipation had kept me up the whole night!” she laughs. “Contemplating my results filled me with nervousness, but also with a sense of excitement. After receiving them, I knew that I had fulfilled another one of my goals.”

As she looks forward to begin further studies, Alina hopes to become a voice for women empowerment. “I want to be someone who is capable of preventing and alleviating the pain and suffering of others.”

Raiha Mustafa RizviFirst Position in Commerce Group - HSSCHigh Achiever in Banking and Commercial Geography - HSSC IIHabib Girls’ School, Karachi

I chose to study Commerce because I felt that understanding the global economy was a fascinating lens through which I could view the world. ‘Business’ is often associated with negative, exploitative connotations for some people, but I want to challenge that narrative and prove that there is much more to it. Commercial Geography was a subject I enjoyed in particular, because my teacher would always engage the entire class and tie what we were learning to real-world examples and political scenarios. The attitude that has enabled me to become the person I am today is by maintaining a clear set of goals to work towards, yet still enjoying the journey as I move closer to them.

Maira JawwadFirst Position in Science Group - SSCHigh Achiever in Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics - SSC IISultan Mohammad Shah Aga Khan School, Karachi

I strive for each and every mark that I earn over the course of my studies, and my examinations were no different. When revising, I would always ask myself if I understood the “What, Why and How?” of each concept as a checklist to test my preparedness. My love for science-based subjects comes from the fact that I am awestruck by the wonders of nature, and thus see science and mathematics as a tool to explore it further. I aspire to study medicine in the future, and hope to be able to raise awareness about infectious diseases and their prevention in underprivileged areas and villages. There are 86,400 seconds in every day, and I believe it is critical that we do not waste them!

As a new student at Habib Girls’ School, I remember watching high achievers being honoured during my orientation. I made up my mind back then that I wanted to be among those students one day - and here I am! Although I had not planned to study Humanities initially, it is a choice I am proud of, as it put me on my current path. In retrospect, I realise that the most important decision I took was to accept new circumstances and give 100% of my effort into doing the best I could. Studying under the AKU-EB system also helped develop my personality, and it gave me the time and space to pursue my interests outside of the classroom.

Arsalan Akbar Ali

There was a time when I could study but not focus and my mind was stuck with questions such as ‘What if I don’t get funding? What will happen to my education? How will my family face this burden in the mid of financial crises at home?’ I was anxious about both, my future and my family. There was a sudden relief on my shoulders when I was selected for the AKU-EB Bridge Scholarship. The scholarship allowed me to stay focused on my academics. With the help and encouragement of my high school teachers and availability of resources under the AKU-EB system, I worked hard to strengthen my knowledge and skills in subjects that guided my way towards the field of accountancy.

AKU-EB Bridge Scholarship is a force of hope and motivation that truly changes the future of many talented young individuals graduating the AKU-EB system.

I am tech savvy by nature - I love Mathematics and Physics and naturally I gravitated towards Pre-Engineering for my HSSC studies. Currently I am pursuing a university degree in Civil Engineering. The key to my success was to find enjoyment in revision by using facilities such as online learning materials, social media and the internet, rather than just a textbook. The best advice I could give to fellow students is to stay humble, be courageous and enjoy this beautiful thing all of us experience called life!

Areej Al MedinahHabib University, Pakistan

“I just completed my semester long exchange program from Stanford University where I took classes on Technology and Innovation Intensive Studies. I want to become an entrepreneur, social innovator and product designer. I love problem solving and designing products that contribute to social innovation in the society. An example of this is my startup, which is working on inclusivity for the deaf community in our society through interpretation services. Under the AKU-EB system, I have consciously felt the grooming in my practical understanding of academics and my approach towards horizon-less thinking. This has been playing an important part of my profession in an entrepreneurial world.” Areej was HSSC overall first position holder 2016 under the AKU-EB system. Before joining Habib University, Areej went to study Computer Science, Sustainable Product Design and Entrepreneurship from Harvard University under the US Summer Sister Exchange program. She is a recipient of the Yohsin Scholarship - highest merit scholarship award by the Habib University.

The Aga Khan University Examination Board is proud of its alumni currently pursuing higher education in top universities within and outside Pakistan. Our alumni play an important role in supporting AKU-EB initiatives as well as guiding current students in their pursue of higher education.

Kamil KhuwajaUniversity of Windsor, Canada

“After completing my BA in Electrical Engineering, I joined world’s largest nuclear power plant, Bruce Power, in Ontario, Canada. I have been undertaking challenging projects to strengthen and build my knowledge and skills in the area of electrical engineering. I’ve learned to solve complex problems independently and engage in research and innovation. I would like to take a set of new skills back to Pakistan. Electricity has always been an issue in Pakistan, despite all the resources in hands. There is a lack of efficient allocation and utilization of resources, requiring a proper leadership in the area of engineering and technology. This is where I see myself and all other talented engineers play role and make a positive impact.

For all the AKU-EB students who are into engineering – my advice is to believe in your ideas and creativity. Never stop exploring. Think of ways your ideas can touch people’s lives.” Kamil is also engaged in social work. He has been a part of the Aga Khan World Partnership Walk for the past 6 years. The project is based on collecting donations through various activities and campaigns directed towards providing basic necessities to countries where people live below the poverty line. With his own team of engineers, he raised CAD 10,000 donations to support small developmental initiatives in some of the most remote places of Africa and Asia.

Karim AhmadLahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS),Pakistan

“Living with extremely limited means has inculcated within me a drive and a deep sense of societal obligation. For the last couple of years, I have been working as a Social Media Director with a youth led NGO called Organization for Educational Change (OEC). The team focus has been on youth and developing scholarships for Primary, Secondary and Higher-Secondary School students who cannot afford education. Over time, I learned the importance of a good leader in various fields, especially education. It is a challenge to honor. Recently, I was chosen to be a member of the Youth Parliament of Pakistan (Gilgit-Baltistan Cabinet) as the Youth Ambassador and look forward to work on bridging the gap between communities, foster tolerance in our society and be the voice of youth in aiding the policy-making process. My leadership skills come from my engagement with Aga Khan Higher Secondary School under the AKU-EB system. The curriculum has triggered my curiosity, shaped my vision, ignited within me the sweltering desire to have a truly practical approach towards education. It enticed me into reasoning and oriented me towards research-based studies. I chose to become a lawyer and work towards building an educated and tolerant Pakistan. The field is unique and requires a lot of dedication. I feel well prepared.”

Usra ShaukatAsian University for Women (AUW), Bangladesh

“I am interested in the education sector and plan to apply for a fellowship to join educators who are part of the Teach for Pakistan movement. The desire to join the educators comes directly from my experience of observing lack of equal access to education in certain remote areas of Pakistan where young talented women remain undermined. This raises concern over future generation of leaders we hope to grow. I am majoring in Politics, Philosophy and Economics and this is my final year at AUW. Social sciences have opened wide range of opportunities for me. Currently, I am attending six months exchange program in the University of Trento, Italy under the Erasmus+International Credit Mobility Scholarship. Apart from academics, I am learning about cultural awareness and fundamental

leadership skills. As I get to know and meet people from different nations, I remember how my high school teachers encouraged us to be tolerant, appreciate and celebrate diversity and pluralism for a peaceful future. Today, I understand the importance of encouraging these values through our education system. My advice to AKU-EB students: You might have already found yourself so fortunate to attend the AKU-EB system. Surely, you are! It is preparing you at the national and international levels. Take advantage of this opportunity.”

Adil ShahGeorgia Institute of Technology, USA

“Having enjoyed Mathematics and Physics during my high school, I had a strong interest in studying electrical engineering”, says Adil.

Adil recieved admission into top engineering universities in Pakistan, National University of Science and Technology (NUST) and Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) and decided to join LUMS where he was offered a full scholarship. “AKU-EB system made my life at LUMS very easy in terms of understanding theories and practice, developing skills outside the curriculum as well as the ability to balance academics with extracurricular activities. I excelled at LUMS.”

After graduating LUMS, Adil took a year to serve his community by teaching Mathematics and English courses and provide free vocational counseling to youngsters. “I motivated my fellows to seek knowledge, have purpose in life and grow. Yet, to pursue happiness in life, one must offer a helping hand to those less fortunate.” Adil also worked for a corporation before receiving a Fulbright Scholarship to join his graduate school, the Georgia Institute of Technology in the United States.

Uzma KhanUniversity of Central Asia (UCA), Tajikistan

“AKU-EB system was a life changing experience. Under this system teachers take full ownership of their subjects and ensure that each student understands the material. For example, when I first joined, I was shocked how subjects such as physics, biology and chemistry were taught. I thought, I knew everything from the books, but realized that there was a huge gap between what I knew and ways other students were questioning knowledge in the class. They were all scientists. Later, I joined a newly opened liberal arts institution at the heart of a mountainous region in Central Asia to pursue my undergraduate degree in Economics. I have been interested in studying why the northern regions of Pakistan, despite all the resources in hands, have a struggling socio-economic condition. While professors

supervise our research at the UCA, thanks to AKU-EB curriculum, I do know the techniques of asking the right questions, collecting data, analyzing and addressing the issue. My advice to AKU-EB students: Manage your time. Work smart. You are not yet conscious about how the system is preparing you for the next academic journey until you graduate. Challenge yourself beyond what you are taught. You have all the resources.”

Abdul MananFAST National University, Pakistan

“I would like to invest my time and knowledge in the field of Information Technology. I do a lot of research to understand innovations and progress in IT in the context of Pakistan. IT is an important aspect of a modern society. In the coming future, I want to develop tools and applications to make teaching and learning joyful.” Abdul Manan is a full scholarship holder at FAST and he is a recipient of FAST gold medal for excellence in academic achievements.

“Having studied under the AKU-EB system, I learned to strive for excellence. AKU-EB had already prepared me for FAST and I realized it only when I was at the university. If every school in Pakistan was under the AKU-EB’s supervision, every child would have been a prepared scientist and an innovator, engineer or a doctor, architect or a designer right from school. I feel lucky to have attended this system.” Abdul Manan was the first position holder in HSSC General Science group in year 2016. “My advice to all students – Where do you see yourself in 10 years? If you see yourself in power, how will you empower others? We all have a role to play in helping those in need.”

Murtaza Hussain MemonNED University, Pakistan

“People get surprised when I tell them that I am studying electrical engineering and currently work as a Volunteer at the Kingri Youth Organization – an NGO to promote girls education in the remote areas of Sindh. I often give an example of Bill Gates who was also into computers but saw a good need and purpose to work in the area of public health. For some people, the purpose of their profession is to meet their passion. As a child, I grew up breaking and repairing electronic equipment and later, I was interested in LEGO Robotic competitions. I knew that this is a field I wanted to pursue. This is my third year at NED under the Khairpur merit based Scholarship Award, but none of this would have been possible without my four years of education under the AKU-EB system. The curriculum and

extracurricular activities have broadened my mind and strengthened my skills in the field I was good at. It was the hard work of teachers who pushed me to take challenges, question and think beyond books. I cannot be thankful enough. My advice to all AKU-EB students: Find out what you are good at and what you are passionate about. Be competent. Profession brings income and passion brings joy.”
