• Before re-entry, the Orbital and Instrument-Service Modules are jettisoned to reduce the spacecraft’s weight.

• 15 minutes before landing, three parachutes are deployed.

• One second before touchdown, engines on the bottom of the Descent Module fire, slowing down the spacecraft for a softer landing.

• Soyuz’s target landing zone is a 25 mile area in Kazakhstan.

• While ascent takes about two days, landing only takes about 3.5 hours.

• Soyuz’s first unmanned flight was in 1966. Its first manned flight was in 1967.

• Soyuz has been redesigned seven times.

• As of May 2008, there have been 99 Soyuz missions. There have been more Soyuz manned missions than any other spacecraft.
