Tabernacle last week was be-ginning the cleanup following thestrong winds and rain HurricaneSandy brought.

According to Mayor RichardFranzen, all operations wereunder control within the town-ship, and life around the town-ship had returned to normal bymid-week.

The Office of EmergencyManagement, directed by ColonelWilliam Lowe, has done a fantas-tic job. He coordinated and direct-ed the responses of the townshipRoad Department, Rescue Squad,Fire Company and CERT to anyemergency situations. They oper-ated out of the Emergency Servic-es Building 24-hours a day begin-

ning early Monday, Oct. 29, saidFranzen.Issues in the township includ-

ed downed trees, wires on road-ways and minimal flooding. Addi-tionally, there were no injuries,deaths or motor vehicle accidentsreported through the course of the storm.

A week-long celebration of school spirit culminated on Fri-day, Oct. 26 at Senecas homecom-ing football game.

Tabernacle was very fortu-nate; a lot of trees came down.None of the trees hit houses, butsome hit power lines, said Lowe.

According to Lowe, at theheight of the storm there wereapproximately 2,800 residentswithout power.

According to Franzen, due tothe large number of tree limbsthat fell during the storm, thetownship will offer a special

brush pickup over the next sev-eral weeks. Township managerDoug Cramer will announce anew schedule via the townshipwebsite with details about thepickup.

We are very fortunate that thedamage was not worse. While thehigh winds and heavy rain didcause many power outages andfallen trees, there was not anymajor structural damage. Whenyou look at what has happened onthe barrier islands and in theNew York City area, you have tobe thankful that our local losseswere so much less severe, saidFranzen.

Tabernacles OEM activatedtwo reverse 911 calls to keep resi-dents informed of Tabernaclesplans during the storm and thebrush pickup.

Through the storm, thePinelands Regional CERT team

ran the OEM, while the fire com-pany was part of a strike, orequal resources, team. The teamresponded to a few calls in Sha-mong along with a response inMonmouth County, said Lowe.

Overall, the residents of Tab-ernacle did very well, and it wasproven, we got very little calls,said Lowe.

According to a statement is-sued by Burlington County, assis-tance given was to the neighbor-ing counties, specifically Atlanticand Ocean. Ocean County had nu-merous fires, and five local firecompanies dispatched fire trucks

to assist. Local units also sentfour marine rescue boats units toassist in rescuing individuals.

Additionally, county shelterstook in 400 or more individualsfrom both Atlantic and Oceancounties. Of the people, 200 weremoved into an overflow shelter atthe Pemberton Campus of Burlington County College. Most

of the other residents weremoved to the shelter at Fountainof Life located in Florence.

The recovery begins inBurlington County. But we arenot out of the woods, thousandsare still without power, and weneed to work expeditiously toclear our roadways for safe pas-sage. In the meantime, we will doeverything we can to help ourfriends in neighboring Ocean andAtlantic Counties. I know we stillhave a long way to go, but ourcounty and local emergency man-agement personnel and volun-teers have done a great job of

keeping on top of this storm,Freeholder Director Bruce Gar-ganio said in a statement lastweek.

If I were to say anythingabout the people of Tabernacle, isthat they listened very well, saidLowe. They prepped for thestorm, and so few people called[OEM].

There are numerous groups thathelp veterans and their families, espe-cially those who have fallen on hard

times. Volunteer for one of thesegroups, or make a donation.

Or get involved in a different organi-zation that is trying to better your com-munity. Help to feed the hungry or ad-vance research into a deadly disease.Gather clothing and other items anddrop them off at a center that will usethem to help the less fortunate. Dosomething to make a difference, to giveback to those around you who can usea helping hand.

We are heading into the holiday sea-

son. Its the easiest time of the year toget involved because there are so manyways to give.

In the coming weeks, we inviteeveryone who is holding a drive orfundraiser to contact us with the de-tails so that we can share them with

Burlington County Animal Shelter unveils Free Pets for SeniorsBurlington County senior citizens can

now have a free furry companion from theBurlington County Animal Shelter.

Freeholder Mary Ann OBrien recentlyunveiled the shelters Free Pets for Sen-iors program, through which all countysenior citizens age 60 years and older mayadopt a dog or cat free of charge.

This program is imaged after the verysuccessful Free Petsfor Vets program thatOBrien started in January of this year.

It is well known that companion ani-mals can help to reduce stress, depression,

anxiety and loneliness, said OBrien. Weare making it easier for Burlington Countysenior citizens to provide animals in need

with a loving home while giving seniors afurry companion.The cost of adopting from the shelter is

anywhere from $45 to $100, depending onthe type and the age of the animal.

All animals are neuteredor spayed before being adopted out.

Seniors interested in adopting will needto fill out an application form and showproof of age and residency.

The typical waiting period runs any-

where from one to seven days, dependingupon the animal.

Anyone in the market for a pet should

consider the shelter, said OBrien.Visitors are welcomed to walk throughthe kennels, and acquaint themselves withour occupants who are looking for newand loving homes.

The animal shelter is located on PioneerBoulevard in the countys Westamptoncomplex, off Woodlane Road.

everything for the week, saidCaroline Royston, president of the student council.

Homecoming was broken upinto three separate components the homecoming dance, wherestudents vote for their king andqueen, spirit week and the foot-ball game at the end of the week.

This is the first year we pairedspirit week with homecoming,said Erica Maira, student counciladviser and homecoming organ-izer. It used to be paired with thespirit carnival in the spring, butthe kids wanted it to feel like atrue homecoming.

The student governmentchanged its style to help revamphomecoming. The student council

created four separate executivechairs for each grade to help or-ganize the homecoming festivities.

We added four more positions,a liaison from each grade. Theygo out to each homeroom eachFriday to tell them what their sta-tus is, and check to see where thehomeroom is, said Maira. [Thegame] was a culmination of all of that.

The student council came upwith a theme for each grade. Sen-iors were the 1960s, and the jun-iors were the 1940s. The sopho-mores chose the 1850s, and thefreshman class was the 1980s.

Spirit week, a week with desig-nated themes each day, includedthe theme the classes chose.

Monday was dress for success.We encouraged every student todress up. Tuesday was crazy hair,and Wednesday was their decade.Thursday was college T-shir t day,and Friday was upperclassmenwear green, underclassmen weargold, said Royston.

The student council wasnt setup to be a separate entity from thestudent body, it was to bring theschool together, said Maira. Ithink this year, it finally hap-pened.

The students then attended apep rally dressed in green andgold, and the finale of spirit week.

The pep rally gave me chills,Royston said. Theres so muchschool spirit.

Additionally, the students cre-ated a seamless lip synchingvideo slated to be posted to

YouTube.We had over 45 clubs, which is

about 300 kids who participatedin the lipdubbing, said Royston.

At halftime, the Golden Eaglesshowed off their dance moves.The cheerleaders performed aroutine before the band took thefield to play their Rocky Balboaensemble, complete with a boxingmatch performed by the colorguard. Immediately followingwas the banner parade with floatsdecorated by decade, and a dancecreated by each class.

The parade has never been tothat extent. I think each year its

just going to get better, saidRoyston. Homecoming never re-ally felt like a homecoming. Thisyear, it was awesome.

It was a true celebration,said Maira.
