I'd like to chat with you on this, but in the meantime, here's a link to the MPEGs that show the
Shortcut to
flight paths of each of the hijacked aircraft. verview.mpg
Note that UA 175 first intercepts AA 11, then UA 93.
The enclosed excel file (below) shows the actual time/distance between aircraft, according to ouranalysis. It confirms that UA 175 was within 30 km of both aircraft. The specific times for eachclose approach are:
Time Lat Lon Est Alt (feet)Approx Position of UA-93 11 Sep 2001 12:49:48.00 40.804 -74.882 16646.978Approx Position of UA-175 11 Sep 2001 12:49:48.00 40.779 -75.208 31000.246
Approx Position of AA-11 11 Sep 2001 12:38:03.00 41.456 -73.820 26991.862Approx Position of UA-175 11 Sep 2001 12:38:03.00 41.574 -73.711 30999.659
While it's probably a long shot, I'd be very curious as to whether any communications occurredbetween these aircraft during these close approaches.
Please let me know if you find anything.
Thanks
V/RTw

Cherie,
Here is the Spreadsheet for the military aircraft (C-130?) near the PA site. It wasnamed "Pentagon Observer" because it flew near the Pentagon after the crash.
We will try to get the rest of the Langley Fighters to you by Monday afternoon. Those tracks have to be broken out and put onto a Spreadsheet. Not hard to dobut a little time consuming, and they are doing a few other tasks right now.
Just so you know, our squadron does have a 24-hour response phone number. If something comes up, and you need a product quickly, you can call our standby Team Chief at (801) 791-6668. If you tell them who you are, what you need,(and if it's going to someone like the CINC, tell them that also) then we can bepaged to come in and complete whatever you need. Small requests like theones you have been giving me are fine, and I can back brief the Commander onwhat you need. But again, if you need something big, or something fast, feel freeto call the Cell Phone anytime.

e eLangley2.xls Langley2.ppt Cherie,Attached is the Spreadsheet with the entire flight of the Langley fighters, and alsoa PowerPoint slide showing the route. (They flew for quite awhile)
There were 3 aircraft and for the most part stayed together, or in the samegeneral vicinity. One of the problems when they fly close to each other, is thattheir codes start overlapping or decode incorrectly. When this happens, it isdifficult to break out each aircraft as a separate track.
If this Spreadsheet will work for what you need, let me know. If not, we can try alittle harder to separate each aircraft. That may be hard to do based on what Ihave seen so far.

These notes are for the 'New Overview' MPG.
Rather than double-clicking on the file to play it, open up the Media Player under the Accessoriesmenu from the Start menu. Using this media player gives you more control. You can reversethe motion as well as speed it up by dragging the time indicator bar; also, the video stays openwhen it's finished playing.
Here is a list of actions which take place in the video corresponding to the NORAD timeline ofevents.
0759 - AA11 Takes off from Boston: AA11 marker and track is red - this is where the video starts.Note the thickness of the track which signifies that the transponder is on.
0814 - UA 175 takes off from Boston: UA 175 marker and track is blue - track is thick signifyingtransponder is transmitting (Note: graphic track remains thick throughout flight -transponder remained ON)
0820 - AA 11 IFF Transponder off: AA 11 thick red track goes to thin red track
AA 77 takes off from Dulles: AA 77 marker and track is green. Track is thick fortransponder on
0825 - AA 11 Alters course
0840 - FAA Boston reports possible hijack of AA 11: "Boston FAA" and "NEADS" labels appear inyellow; graphical "pulsed beam" flashes momentarily
The following 2 events occur nearly simultaneously on the video.
0842 - UA 93 takes off from Newark: UA 93 marker and track is cyan. Thick track fortransponder on.
0843 - Boston FAA reports possible hijack of of UA 175: Pulsed beam flashes again
0846 - Otis Air National Guard issues scramble order: "OTIS" label appears in white
AA 11 Impact on WTC 1: Target symbol appears at impact location
0850 - AA 77 Transponder off and radar contact is lost: AA 77 Track and marker disappear (18minutes, 51 seconds - no radar contact)
0852 - UA 175 Alters course towards WTC
Otis fighters airborne: White triangle markers and tracks representing total of 6 aircraft - 2aircraft on each flight leg.)
0902 - UA 175 Impact on WTC 2: Target symbol appears at impact location
0909 - AA 77 radar contact regained: Thin track signifies transponder OFF
0924 - FAA reports possible hijack of AA 77: "Wash FAA" label appears an d pulsed beamflashed between Wash FAA and NEADS. (Note: our analyst called NEADS to find outwhich FAA center made the call. NEADS recollection is that it was most likely the WashFAA that made the call; however, their were many players on the line by that time.)
Langley scramble order issued: "LANGLEY" label appears in white

0930 - Langleyfighters airborne: totalof 3 aircraft in formation represented by white trianglemarker and single track
UA93 reverses course towards Washington DC: obvious from video. (Notethesimultaneity of both UA 93 and the Langley fighters turning towards DC)
0937 - AA 77impact on Pentagon: Target symbol appears at impact location.
0940 - UA 93 Transponder off: Cyan track goes thin
0946 - UA 93Radar contact lost: UA 93marker and track disappear (14 minutes, 37 seconds ofno radar contact)
1002 - UA 93Radar contact regained: Markerand track reappear - but for only a few seconds. It is not obvious because we regained radar contact for LESS than oneminute beforeimpact; however, the transponder was O N for the last 2 data points (represents anamoun t of time between 12 and 20 seconds).

CMSgt McFadden -
I'm proposing to present the following briefing chartsat a Satellite Tool Kit (STK) Users'Conference next m onth. STK is the software that we used to make the 91 1 video filesthat you reviewed for unclassified presentation at the NATO ADC meeting last month. The STK conference is an unclassified forum - and will most likely include some foreignattendees (e.g. Canada and Europe). The primary objective of the conference is atechnical excha nge and training in the intricacies of using the software as a modelingtool. We have been invited to present our use of the software using the 91 1 scenariowhich Analytical Graphics Inc (maker's of STK) helped us create last September.
Could you please review this proposed briefing for any FDO concerns / issues? Also, wewant to include a hyperlink on the' Animations' chart which would launchthe mpg videofiles that you reviewed last month.
Thanks for your help.VR,Cherie GottNSPAN
PS - AGI has requested that we get our presentations to them by last Friday, 1 0 May. Ihave been so tied up with other tasks that I'm running days late with my charts. Theywant to have them this week - is it possible to review them expeditiously? My apologiesfor the short timeline. Thanks again.
