From the Principal:Welcome Back to term 4! I firstly hope that each and every family had an enjoyablebreak and were able to spend some quality time with their loved ones.Whilst every term seems to be extremely busy, this term is no different. To think thatwe are almost two weeks down, with only 8 weeks of learning for 2019, there is stillplenty of opportunity for students to develop.
This year we have been continually developing practice on our reading skills. As staff weare weekly upskilling our understanding and knowledge around the teaching of readingand reflecting on our current practice in order to make improvements. This in turn, ensures that your child receives the best possible, evidence-based practice aroundreading development.
This week every child will receive their reading goal for the term. These goals are used inclass and should also provide a discussion point throughout home-reading time. Byhaving students articulating their goal, it gives them the opportunity to demonstratemastery and build on any misconceptions in their reading. Please check to see that yourchild’s reading goal is in their home reading folder and used each night.

PBL (Positive Behaviour for Learning)Our PBL over the past two weeks has revolved around re-creating positive routines, enhancing learning behaviours.Week 1 targeted WHOLE BODY LISTENING, in which students articulated that when listening, or learning, they needto use their whole body, not just their ears. In order to minimise distractions students need to listen with their eyeson the speaker, legs and hands still, lips closed, open mind and ears open. By understanding whole body listening, students can create maximum gain from every lesson.
This week we have been discussing being responsible. I prepare for the day, before I play is our saying and thisensures that we are being organised and getting ready to learn before heading outside for morning fitness. Toprepare for the day, students should have their lunchbox in the fridge, fruit-break on their desk, sharp pencil andequipment ready for the day, as well as their home-reading folder on the desk. By preparing for the day, we minimisethe need for delay tactics, excuses and distractions.
Through our Zones of Regulation lessons we continue to build our social and emotional wellbeing. We understandthat students require not only the skills to achieve academically, but also socially and emotionally. By proactivelydeveloping students’ skills in wellbeing, we ensure that our students go from functioning to flourishing. This week wetrial a new homework sheet to get feedback around the usefulness of home tasks focussing on wellbeing. We lookforward to hearing your feedback.
READING @ HOME:Oral LanguageDid you know that by the time a child reaches age three, there can be a word-count deficit of up to 30 million words! This is due to the language that students hear at home from their parents, siblings and community. How much interaction do you have with your children? How frequently are you reading to them?Do you discuss what they have read? Do you talk at the dinner table? The interactions that you have with your child, the way you speak, the word choices you make and the language youuse, is all replicated at school. Vocabulary development is an essential element in developing students’ reading skills.Oral language, or how we hear and use words when speaking is the first and easiest way to engage students inreading.Homework reading time may be a shared story between you and your child. Take turns reading, discuss the words, pictures, title, characters. All of these simple, daily routines can build a child’s oral language skills, giving them thenecessary foundation for reading acquisition.
I look forward to the fortnight ahead.Yours in Education,
Mr N Dargusch
