CATEGORICAL WON-LOST-TIED HEAD COACH JAY VIDOVICHJay Vidovich was named as T2’s first head coach for the 2015 USL season on Dec. 18, 2014. Vidovich leads T2 after 21 seasons as head coach at Wake Forest Univer-sity, where he has become one of the most successful coaches in NCAA history.

Vidovich, who also serves as an assistant coach for the Portland Timbers first team, joins T2 as one of the most widely regarded soccer coaches at the collegiate level in the United States and an astute developer of talent. The 54-year-old Detroit na-tive has seen many of his players at Wake Forest advance to the professional ranks, including 11 first-round MLS SuperDraft selections since 2005. In total, 29 of Vidovich’s Wake Forest players have been selected by MLS clubs during the MLS SuperDraft since 2000, including U.S. Men’s National Team defender Michael Parkhurst and longtime MLS mainstays Brian Carroll and James Riley. Recently, Vidovich has helped develop players that have made the jump to MLS including Sam Cronin, Ike Opara and former U.S. U-17 National Team captain Jared Watts.

Joining the Demon Deacons as an assistant coach in 1986, Vidovich accepted the role of head coach in 1994 and has built Wake Forest into an Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) soccer powerhouse. Under Vidovich’s guidance, Wake Forest reached the NCAA Tournament in 13 of the past 14 seasons and cap-tured five ACC regular-season championships. The program made four consecutive NCAA College Cup appearances from 2006-2009 and won its first NCAA National Championship in 2007.

Vidovich, who was named NSCAA National Coach of the Year in consecutive seasons (2007, 2008), com-piled a 272-121-50 (.670) overall record in 21 years as head coach at Wake Forest. He earned five ACC Coach of the Year Awards (2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2009), while also logging a 76-52-22 (.580) overall conference record. Outside of the Demon Deacons program, Vidovich also spent time as an assistant coach with the U.S. U-18 National Team in 2009 and as a scout for the U.S. U-23 National Team under Timbers head coach Caleb Porter.

As a player, Vidovich spent one season at Indiana University in 1978 before transferring to Ohio Wesleyan where he was a three-year starter and captained the team to the NCAA semifinals in 1982. Vidovich received a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Ohio Wesleyan, before proceeding to the University of Denver where he earned a master’s degree in sports sciences in 1983.

While at Denver, he began his coaching career as an assistant on the Pioneers’ 1982 team that won the NAIA Division II district and regional championships. In 1983, Vidovich moved to Regis College as an assistant coach, helping guide a team that included two NAIA All-Americans. Prior to earning a job as an assistant at Wake Forest under head coach Walt Chyzowych in 1986, Vidovich returned to his alma mater, Ohio Wesleyan, as an assistant coach from 1984-1985.

Vidovich holds a USSF “A” license and a NSCAA Advanced National Diploma.

He and his wife, Julie, have two daughters, Zoe and Tess.

SACRAMENTO REPUBLIC FC AT T2THURSDAY, APRIL 2, 2015

SCOUTING REPUBLIC FCAt the helm of Sacramento Republic FC is head coach Predrag “Preki” Ra-dosavljevic, often cited as one of the best midfielders ever to play Major League Soccer. One of the most notable U.S. professional players of his generation, he made 28 international appearances and tallied four goals for the U.S. Men’s Na-tional Team. Preki competed during the first 10 seasons of MLS, mainly for the Kansas City Wizards, scoring 79 goals and 112 assists and leading the Wizards to the 2000 MLS Cup title. A two-time MLS MVP (1997, 2003), Preki helped guide Republic FC to the USL championship in his first season as head coach in 2014. Republic FC recently tallied their first win of the 2015 season, a 3-2 triumph on the road against LA Galaxy II on March 28, as midfielder Rodrigo Lopez netted the game-winning goal in the 90th minute. Second-year forward Octavio Guz-man scored twice from the penalty spot against Galaxy II. Starting the season, Sacramento sustained a 4-2 loss against Seattle Sounders FC 2 on March 21.

FIRST TWO AT HOMET2 contests its first two matches in USL at the friendly confines of Merlo Field. Following Sunday’s inaugural season-opening win against Real Monarchs SLC, T2 plays host to defending USL-champion Sacramento Republic FC on Thursday, April 2; kickoff is set for 7 p.m. (Pacific). T2 then plays their next four matches on the road from April 8-25.

SACRAMENTO TIESDuring Sacramento Republic FC’s inaugural season in 2013, the Timbers sup-plied several players on loan to the club as the team’s USL affiliate. Goalkeeper Jake Gleeson and midfielder Steven Evans each played important roles in help-ing Republic FC to a hugely successful first season. Sacramento won the USL championship in its inaugural season, defeating Harrisburg City Islanders 2-0 on Sept. 27. Gleeson appeared in 21 matches for Republic FC during the 2014 season, recording a 0.96 goals-against average. Evans appeared in 18 matches (9 starts) for Republic FC during the 2014 season, scoring two goals. Also, T2 defender Harrison Delbridge spent the 2014 season with Republic FC, making 22 appearances (19 starts).

T2 COACHING STAFFHead coach Jay Vidovich’s staff includes two assistant coaches with roots in the Timbers organization. Assistant coach Andrew Gregor spent three seasons with the second-division Timbers during his 12-year professional playing career. A standout with the University of Portland in college, Gregor appeared in 50 league games for the Timbers, tallying 10 goals and eight assists. In 2004, he helped the Timbers capture a regular-season title and earned all-league honors in 2007 while leading the club to the semifinal of the USL First Division playoffs. Gregor, who is also the head coach of the Timbers U-16 Academy team, was named one of the Top 25 USL players of the decade (2000-10).

Assistant coach/goalkeeper coach Steve Reese spent two seasons as goalkeep-er with the Timbers second division side in 2007 and 2008. An Oregon native, Reese has served as a coach at the college and professional level, spending time with Thorns FC of the National Women’s Soccer League in 2014, as well as serving as a coach with the Timbers Academy.

ON LOAN FROM THE FIRST TEAMT2 can expect to see several players from the Timbers first-team squad on loan for matches during the season. In the inaugural match against Real Monarchs SLC, first-team midfielder Nick Besler, defenders Taylor Peay and Andy Thoma and forward Schillo Tshuma all started for T2.

TIMBERS TIES

The T2 roster includes three players with previous ties to the Timbers. Brent Richards was the Timbers first Homegrown Player signing in club history in 2012 and made six appearances (2 starts) during his rookie season. A Camas, Wash., native, Richards was named the Timbers 2012 Young Player of the Year and played in nine matches with the first team across all competitions and was the second-leading scorer for the Timbers Reserves with four goals in 2012.

Midfielder Steven Evans spent the past two seasons with the MLS Timbers after signing as a Homegrown Player with the club prior to the 2013 season. Born-and-bred in Portland, Evans was a standout at the University of Portland and played four seasons with the Timbers U-23s Premier Development League (PDL) team, where he helped the side win a 2010 PDL title. Last year on loan to Sacra-mento Republic FC, Evans helped the first-year club win the USL championship.

Forward Kharlton Belmar joins T2 after being selected in the second round (No. 34 overall) in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft by the Timbers. Last year, Belmar spent the season as a member of the Timbers U-23s, where he tallied eight goals and one assist in 14 games. After earning a spot on the PDL All-Western Conference list, Belmar was named the Timbers U-23s Player of the Year in 2014.

Michael, who is three years older than Blair, played collegiately at the University of Portland from 2004-07. The elder Gavin was the No. 4 overall pick in the 2008 MLS Supplemental Draft by the LA Galaxy. The younger Gavin was the No. 10 overall pick in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft by Chivas USA following a standout career at the University of Akron from 2007-09.
