A Message From the Principal Dear Parents/Guardians
Thank you for your warm welcome back to Woodland P.S. I am thrilled to be
back! As many of you know, I was part of the Woodland staff as Vice Principal from
November 2011 to June 2013 (part/full time). I have been working since then as V.P.
between Stornoway and Willowbrook Public Schools. I am very excited to return to
the Woodland community and look forward to working with students, staff members
and parents/guardians.
Where ever you find yourself this March Break, whether on a ski slope, a
warm beach or time at home, enjoy some ‘down’ time relaxing and enjoying your
family.
Sincerely,
Mme Tonya Vokey-Young
Outdoor Recess in Cold Weather
The York Region District School Board is always concerned about the health and well-
being of all our students. One of the components of a healthy school culture includes
opportunities for fresh air and outdoor activities.
As with any condition at the school level, principals have discretion to implement
indoor recess breaks in cases of extreme cold and high wind chills.
At Woodland, we monitor the weather daily and make decisions appropriately for the
conditions. We feel it is important for children to get outside and enjoy the fresh air and
have a chance to move and run. We ask that you send your children to school dressed for the
winter weather – hats, boots, mitts and for younger children – snow pants. Thank you for your
cooperation.

York Region District School Board Student Surveys
In order to provide information for Board and School planning, York Region District School Board students in Grades 5 to 12 will be invited to participate in a school survey. The survey, which is anonymous and confidential, will be conducted from April 7 to May
15, 2015 and will take place at school.
The information from this survey will be used to identify areas to be addressed, monitor progress and plan strategies to support student achievement and well-being. Aligned with Board priorities, the survey will address such topics including equity and inclu-sivity, school safety, learning environment, student well-being and other priorities. If you have questions, please contact the school office.
York Region District School Board School Climate Survey for Parents Key Findings
In May and June 2014, parents were invited to complete a questionnaire to collect perception data about their child’s school environment and learning. The survey ad-dressed topics including equity and inclusion, school safety, learning environment, student well-being and parent engagement. More than 14,000 parents participated in the survey.
Overall, parents tended to have positive perceptions of school safety, the learning environment at their child’s school, and reported that the school environment was welcom-ing, equitable and inclusive. Parent response indicated some areas for attention, specifi-cally in areas related to parent engagement, the provision of information related to mental health supports and community agencies and services, and the steps taken by the school to prevent and address bullying.
Thank you to all who participated. Information gathered from this survey will sup-port school and Board planning processes.
STUDENTS AND PARENTS! WE NEED YOUR PICTURES FOR THE YEARBOOK!!!
Woodland Family Dance
June 4, 2015
with DJ:Magen Boys This year we are excited to welcome the Magen Boys to DJ our annual Family Dance. These
talented folks have a special connection with Woodland – the founders of the Magen Boys are
previous Woodlanders themselves! Having made a big name for themselves in the business of
events entertainment, they are overjoyed at the opportunity to return to what they refer to as
“their old stomping grounds.” So, Woodland, come on out to see and experience a musical
extravaganza from our very own alumni. Put on your dancing shoes, dress for the occasion, and be
prepared to dance up a storm at the Woodland Family Dance with the Magen Boys at the helm!
SCHOOL COUNCIL IS

the house, sports items, and giftware also sold well last year. Please contact Hilary at
[email protected], if you have a donation item, or leave items/certificates at the office with
Heather or Susan (please include your contact information in a note attached to the item). Thank
you!
