History Photography comes from the Greek words phos (“light”), and graphis (“stylus”, “paintbrush”) or graphí, together they mean “drawing with light”. Light Painting Photography can be broken down into 3 general categories. The first is Light Drawing this is where the light source can be seen by the camera, during a long exposure the artist uses this light source to draw or create a design within the frame. The second category is Kinetic Light Painting, for this light painting technique the lights in the scene generally remain stationary while the camera itself is moved about during a long exposure to create color and design within the frame. The third category is Light Painting, this is where the artist uses handheld light sources to selectively illuminate parts of a scene during a long exposure photograph. The history below identifies many of the pioneers of Light Painting Photography. My parts: what I find interesting about light painting is the different names and meanings for it. For example, light writing is an art form that work by taking a light and drawing an image that infront of a long exposer camera and frame by frame coming into the image itself. Using one of my light tools I will create a number of images using the outline of a person and objects to create an image within a darkened space. Light painting is where the artist has a handheld source of light and doesn’t use it to create an image but more to create an abstract feeling through the use of his or her movements within a darkened space. My parts: Étienne-Jules Marey and Georges Demeny were the first people to create a Light Painting in the year 1889 given the title “Pathological Walk From in Front”. This was done using their understanding of photography and attaching lights to that of a horse and a person to captor the movement of the two. Even though this was not with the use of a light the reflectiveness of the ball treating the image is still considered as a light writing.
