Leadership“When you say goodbye to... great volunteers, it’s always hard, but it’s good to know there’s always a new generation of leaders emerging.” ~ Mike Rush
June is TBM election month. Election Committee members—Erica Rogers, Jay Johnson, and Sandy Davanzo—are gearing up to tally your votes. I’m told we have more open positions than candidates this year, so at least one slot will be filled by a writein. Send in your ballot to let us know who you want to represent you.
“We just felt it was important to come out and see who was going to be our leaders for the next four years.” ~ Robin Fowler
Our PEP Rally, a Leadership Development Workshop sponsored by American Mensa, is coming up on Saturday, June 19. (It had to be moved back a week.) This is a wonderful opportunity for anyone considering becoming active in TBM to discover how they might get involved—and those who are already active can learn how to be better leaders. Since National is paying for this event, attendance is capped at 30 participants. I’ve already had a few RSVPs, so if you think you’re interested in coming, please let me know right away. If there are extra spaces, I may open this up to people from other local groups, but I want to make sure our own TBM members get the first opportunity. We’ll spend the day learning, have fun, get fed—and it’s FREE! The PEP Rally will be conveniently located in Tampa, at Perkins, 612 N. Dale Mabry Hwy, I275 (the restaurant where the Reading Group meets). We have exclusive use of a private meeting room, so we won’t be disturbed by other restaurant patrons (thank you, Barbara Loewe, for arranging for the site). I look forward to meeting future Tampa Bay Mensa leaders!
“He’s a leader, he knows how to get the best out of us. He has a lot of energy.” ~ Adrian Griffin
Our Regional Gathering, “Return to Beach Bash” hasn’t yet happened as I’m writing, but based on all the energy and planning effort I see going into it, I’m sure Beach Bash will be a great success and a lot of fun! Thank you Dana Groulx, Sandy Davanzo, Barbara Loewe, and everyone else who volunteered to help out.
“Their contributions over the years are unbelievable. They have done a great job preparing themselves and have become great leaders as well.” ~ Paul Thornton
Finally, we’re still seeking a volunteer to take over Circulation Officer duties. Thomas Thomas has been handling this (thank you!), as well as numerous other duties, but he deserves a break. If you think you might like to give it a
Page 4 Tampa Bay Sounding
try, contact either Thomas or me (contact information is on the inside back page of the Sounding), or show up at an FSM to observe for yourself what is involved.
“I knew he had leadership abilities. I knew he had dedication.” ~ Verl Todd
That’s it for this month. I expect I’ll see some of you at a Tampa Bay Mensa event soon!

Theresa Hohmann:I have thoroughly enjoyed my time on ExComm and as Gifted Children’s Coordinator. I would like to be able to continue to serve Tampa Bay Mensa. If you vote for me, I promise there will be no homework on Fridays and free ice cream in the cafeteria.
Kathy Crum:Hi, I’m Kathy Crum, and I am running for reelection to the Tampa Bay Mensa Executive Committee (TBM ExComm). My initial goal for running for the ExComm twelve years ago was to be a voice for those Mensans who choose to be inactive, so that Tampa Bay Mensa would always be an organization with which they would be proud to be associated. I am proud of Tampa Bay Mensa, of how we have grown and changed over the past twelve years, of the people who choose to be involved, as well as the people who support TBM in the background. When you participate by simply renewing your membership each year, you are supporting TBM without even attending an event. Yet once you decide to participate in some small way – whether it is at a dinner, a games night, the reading group, or even the RG, you’ll see that your support of TBM can bring you many new friends and some great times. So please support me with your vote in the upcoming elections for the 2010 Tampa Bay Mensa Executive Committee. Thank you!
Sylvia Zadorozny:Hello, Sylvia here. Many of you know me, but for those of you who don’t, I’ve been your LocSec this past year. As such, I represent TBM to National and throughout our region, manage the
business side of TBM, and keep local members informed through a monthly column.
I participate in the online LocSec discussion group, encouraged National to reconsider the timing of scholarship announcements, and obtained grant money for a PEP Rally (LDW) to be held in Tampa. I also promoted TBM at Regional Gatherings throughout Florida (Ft. Lauderdale, Orlando, Destin).
Locally, I’ve kept ExComm meetings on track and forwardlooking. I’ve introduced the idea of assistant positions to aid and provide backup to key TBM offices and prepare new volunteers. And I’ve delegated tasks and encouraged ExComm members to take responsibility. When we had a critical vacancy, I edited several issues of the Sounding.
I wrote a LocSec column each month, attempting to be informative and/or entertaining, and my Cryptopoem is published each month in the Sounding and Broward Mensa’s BrowBeat. I continue to host games nights at my home every other month—I mention this because attending my games night spurred several members into becoming more active in our group.
Even though I myself am active in TBM, I recognize that many members prefer to stay in the background, which is fine. Level of involvement is an individual decision. I respect that.
If you believe I’ve done a good job leading TBM, I’d appreciate your vote of confidence. Thanks!
Candidate Statements submitted for publication by Erica Rogers, Chair, 2010 TBM Campaign Committee.
RVC Column for Region 10Mel Dahl
Mensa's life blood, both at the national and local level, is testing. Testing brings in revenue as well as new members, and we need both to grow as an organization. Almost everyone reading this is in Mensa because they tested.
Every RVC has been asked by the national office to set testing goals for his or her region, and I have two goals for Region 10. First, I want every local group to have at least one proctor, and preferably two. Most groups have proctors; not all do. If you are interested in becoming a proctor please let me know. If you are a local group leader and you do not have at least two proctors and you need help finding another one, please let me know.
The requirements for becoming a proctor are not that difficult. You must have a degree, and you must attend four testing sessions; two as an observer, and two testing under the supervision of a proctor. Think of the new people you can meet. Think what a great ambassador for Mensa you can be. Think how impressive it will look on your resume. Above all, think about how Mensa could use your talents.
Second, I am asking every local group some time within the next six months to identify a place in your area that is a likely recruiting ground for new members, and focus on getting new members from that place: Maybe a college or university, maybe an arts or cultural center, but surely each group has a place where intelligent people are likely to be found. If they have a newsletter, advertise; if a few Mensans can take a Saturday to go over there and pass out leaflets, do that; if they have regular meetings and they're willing to let someone make an announcement on behalf of Mensa, do that. Be a little creative; you might be surprised at the positive response you'll get. There are still many members who trace their membership to an article in Readers Digest years ago.
And let me know how it goes. Anything I can do to help, let me know.

Suzaku™Thomas George Thomas
Suzaku™ (from Japanese sousaku: search) is a compound puzzle. The first step is to solve it as a traditional sudoku puzzle, using letters instead of numbers. The second step is to search for words in the solved sudoku. Start from any letter, moving up, down, forward, backward or diagonally in any direction, changing direction as needed without reusing the same square for a word. Although there are nine letters in this puzzle, words can be longer if you can find them. (There is a hint for this puzzle on page 18.) For extra credit, score the words using their associated number values to try to find the highest word points.
June 2010 Page 17
The theme word for this month's Suzaku™ is 11 characters long, using all nine letters for a total of 52 points. The shaded square is the starting position for the theme word. Respond to [email protected] with the theme word (or a word with a higher point count) to be entered into a drawing for a $5 gift card to Barnes & Noble. Responses are due by June 15 and the winner will be announced in the July Sounding.
The winner of the April contest drawing (and the BN gift card) was Gladys Beck, who was the only person to respond with the theme word “CATASTROPHE” for 50 points. Sylvia Zadorozny did find two other qualifying words with higher values: “PAPERCHASER” for 59 points and “SCRATCHERS” for 52 points. Remember, if you can find another word with a higher point values than the theme word, you will qualify for the gift card drawing!
Answer to the May Cryptopoem:
One morning when Spring was in her teensA morn to a poet's wishing,All tinted in delicate pinks and greensMiss Bessie and I went fishing. …I with my rod, my reel, and my hooks,And a hamper for lunching recesses; She with the bait of her comely looks,And the seine of her golden tresses. …All the noon I lay in the light of her eyes,And dreamily watched and waited,But the fish were cunning, and would not rise,And the baiter alone was baited. And when the time of departure came,My bag hung flat as a flounder; But Bessie had neatly hooked her gameA hundredandfifty pounder.
