How do I write a position paper?
A position paper is useful
• Forces you to do research on your country’s position
• Organizes your thoughts• Template for your opening
speech• You can win an award for it!
A position paper is necessary• Even if the conference that
you’re attending doesn’t require a position paper…
• It is a good idea to write one anyway!
Check the guidelines
• Conferences have specific requirements for position papers
• If you want to be eligible for an award, adhere to their guidelines
Tips & Tricks
• Usually 1 page• Cite your sources• Be very concise
Part 1: present stance
1. Two official statements from your country regarding the topic2. Explain your country’s connection to the problem (one paragraph)
Part 2: past actions3. Two specific sub-topics of the issue that concern your country4. Two concrete actions that your country has taken5. One concrete action that your country has taken through (or in cooperation with) the UN
Part 3: solution proposals6. Propose two solutions, taking your committee into consideration
Remember that other UN bodies, programs & funds are not off limits (you can request or recommend their involvement)!
