Heart to heart between two pioneers in the Internet of Things (IoT)Innovation and R&D as a hobbyhorse: personal conviction or business project?

Bernd Heinrichs: I can respond with yes in both cases, it is a corporate project but also a per-sonal conviction of mine. What we are doing in the innovation centre is exactly what CISCO is doing : being innovative where global market leaders are acting in specific segments of the market.

Bernard Hodac: For an entrepreneur the trig-ger is first and foremost a quest for freedom, and every initiative manifests this freedom, and, of course, how do you fulfil your corporate existence with a product, that is the difference, the innova-tion. Technical innovation has always fascinated me, and I tried, of course, to achieve a purpose beyond a profitable business. For us the actual point of contact with CISCO is in the first place in sensors and data acquisition. It is, of course, im-peded if there is no data network, transferring and storage. Therefore this point of contact with Cisco is very important to us and is a challenge for us at this stage of the company’s development.

which our role is, as we see it, to embellish. We decided to invest in core countries, in innova-tive, metropolitan areas, concentrating on issues such as improving transport, traffic safety or the retail sector. In these areas, the Internet of Every-thing has a decisive part to play. Firstly through the added economic value to the municipality, but also in generating profits for us. Hamburg, one of our reference projects, is a city where the Internet of Everything is already well es-tablished. Why? Because they have an innovative harbour and were very early on concerned with finding new ways to link shipping with transport

throughout the city and transport control etc., so the city itself has been extensively implemented.

Should the practice of tenders between authorities and service providers be changed?

B. Hodac: Here in France, our experience is that the practice of tenders by municipalities or large companies is a problem if players want to coope-rate. I will give you a brief example : take a mu-nicipality in which there is a service provider for street lighting. This same service provider could

Innovation : How does it fit, in our fast-changing so-ciety?

When Bernd Heinrichs, Managing Director for IoE EMEAR & open-Berlin Inno-vation Centre met Bernard Hodac, OSMOS CEO and Chairman of SYNNOV, the innovation syndicate.

How do the IoT and innovative enter-prises have an impact on the way cities and public services are managed?

B. Hodac: Research and entrepreneurship are much more than simply gaining market shares and making more money. In the field of new tech-nologies applied to smart cities, we are clearly providing processes and innovations as services that provide communities with clear advantages, both in terms of safety and cost-efficiency. There is a need to go further than simply what we put on the market as industrialists, and through our services to the community and public interest, this attitude is fully embodied at OSMOS. Moreover, it constituted one of the main impulses triggering the research that we have come up with in our perpetual attempts to optimise and expand on our assessment of services delivered to clients, and which today more than ever depend on data.

B. Heinrichs: Although I believe that through the IoT much will happen in the private sector, it is not CISCO’s main focus. We focus instead on cities and industries, especially urban areas in

but it is not helped by processes. I think it rather depends in part on a gut feeling, some figures, technical and market understanding.

B. Hodac: For us, of course, research on sensors will continue since collecting data at its source is our raison d’être. But our main challenge of the

last two years has been to create an operatio-nal interface with the insurance world. We

are developing small insurance products with the SMACL. Local authorities are dealing with pro-blems like legal responsibility, budgets, etc. The challenge for us is to make

data enforceable as evidence, both for third parties and in the insurance and

reinsurance world. In other words, ensure that data will actually be integrated into the de-

cision-making chain of contracting authorities.

Mr Hodac, what are the existing syner-gies between players in the digital trans-formation of cities and companies like OSMOS?

help OSMOS by also supplying data transferral or supplying power to OSMOS measuring stations. This would enable us to provide a global service to the municipality without creating a multi-layered and legally complicated structure.

B. Heinrichs: I think the most important step forward is a close interconnection and inte-raction between the companies involved, like CISCO and OSMOS, which can be achieved directly with no bureaucra-tic hurdles to overcome. We must achieve that, as we need speed, we need structures to be more open, and this does not only apply to France, but also to Germany. In Ham-burg, it worked because politicians really understood that rapid action and innovation provide the city with a competitive advantage. The city has, since the early stages of the project, had an influx of talented young people, of start-ups etc. Hamburg changed hugely, as a city, and people, particularly politicians, realised that. Once politicians acknowledge these things, attitudes to the tender process tend to change.

What are the next challenges to be met in the area of innovation?

B. Heinrichs: The key challenge is to implement the right innovations: how do you decide what pro-ject you should be doing and which to refuse? We make rapid “Kill fast, win far” decisions whether to carry out a project or not but it is nonetheless difficult and in the end I would be glad if we could prove that two out of ten of our projects are suc-cessful in introducing innovation. That is the crux,

B. Hodac: The synergies are fundamental. I would say that OSMOS can only really use its ca-pacity to inform by joining forces with actors who process and transfer data; for reasons of opera-tional efficiency as well as market credibility. We are in the process of conducting an experiment with a local authority. It consists of implemen-ting twenty structures that are managed by the municipality itself. The objective is to make an assessment of how the municipality wishes to manage the preventive maintenance of its struc-tures. The underlying idea is to be able to roll out the concept to include entire sets of municipally or privately-owned structures. And though our technology is up to the challenge, this market will not be open to us without a solution that is just as professional in processing data.

Mr Heinrichs, openBerlin is one of nine Cisco Innovation Centers worldwide, each with its own specialization. Is R&D quite decentralised at CISCO?

B. Heinrichs: We are present in Berlin because in Germany, there are world market leaders in au-tomation, in machine construction, in the automo-tive industry, in logistics, and we want to coope-rate with them on a local scale. Of course, our base in the Silicon Valley enables us to keep up with all the international trends and to have a global pre-sence, but in order to be agile and responsive, we will be opening many more innovation centres throughout the world.

FROM OUR LABTO REAL LIFE

A recipe for contained standardisation Despite mature technology which has successfully found its place on the market, our R&D department is working tirelessly to develop generation after generation of sensors and conquer extra market room while firmly establishing OSMOS as the gold standard in opti-mum structural monitoring.

Three product ranges on offerOur determination has enabled us to leave a niche market and to generalise structural monitoring. Though truly generalised and sys-tematic preventive monitoring is still far from achieved, all three ranges of technology have been devised to suit our clients’ needs:

• LIRIS, the wireless mini-unit

• E.A.S, the Expert Acquisition System

• GapTrack, the smart fissurometer

The whole purpo-se of innovation is to make life BETTER

it’s practical use, the satisfaction derived by OS-MOS teams depends on our technology being used on a day-to-day basis, on building sites, in the preservation of built heritage or public facili-ties benefiting everyone.

Innovation, leverage for growthToo often cast aside as the pursuit of an ideal, ecology was for a long time considered to be an issue far removed from economical and political realities. Nevertheless, it now constitutes a ma-jor issue in public opinion and has become the source of whole new economies: circular eco-nomy, green energy, sharing economy, etc. Similarly, we are convinced that innovation is not only a trigger for exceptional growth and development, but also an invitation to redefine how we manage our patrimony ; an opportunity to overthrow the so-called fatality of operating and maintenance costs constituting 75% of a building’s global cost though actual building and study phases only amount to 25%.

A global responsibilityAs we are very aware of our clients’ constraints and requirements, we make risk-reduction our absolute priority. Our production line, our en-gineers, our sales teams and implementing units are organised specifically to meet our clients’ complex and specific needs.

This constitutes the major part of OSMOS am-bitions: ensuring durability in constructions, en-suring safety for everyone, ensuring that mainte-nance costs are drastically diminished. The very core of this adventure is Optic Cord technology, the result of over 35 technological patents and years of Research and Develop-ment. The full implications of this pure product of French expertise and savoir-faire only became clear when it was taken out of the laboratory and applied to real life situations. MARKERS TO GET YOUR PRIORITIES RIGHT

We believe in decision-makers’commitment to durable building. We believe in the opportuni-ties presented by predictive analysis and tech-nological innovation. We believe that one day, systems able to anticipate risks linked to buil-dings will be integrated during construction as a matter of course, and that administrators will no longer be held responsible for hidden faults or unforeseeable accidents.

We believe that as an innovative company, our mission is to provide solutions for mana-gers in charge and to adapt our technology to society’s challenges. We carry out our com-pany’s project to ensure that innovation is available to all. This commitment has already enabled us to shift structural monitoring from a niche market to a global market. Thanks to our efforts, added to those of civil society, structural monitoring is now of great concern to decision-makers.

GLOBAL THINKINGFOR ALL YOUR BUILDING

Safeguarding and cost-savingStructural health in buildings is a group effort. For institutions, local elected authorities and companies alike, it is no longer possible for anyone to do away with safety precautions or cost-effectiveness in building management.

A solution for every situationA lack of tools can lead to decision-makers ma-naging their buildings on a case-by-case basis, as and when problems occur. This is why most of our clients still only call on us to dispel any doubts they might have, in construction work si-tuations or to contain a crisis.

Making preventive monitoring a generalityOur aim is of course to meet our clients’s imme-diate needs, but also to support them through a process of preventive management for all their buildings. By monitoring all their structures and facilities, OSMOS enables anyone to benefit from durable and structurally healthy facilities which need no longer be a cause of worry and unne-cessary costs.

The Dutch complexAn administrator responsible for the mainte-nance of a great number of structures in the Netherlands sought an alternative to traditional routine inspection methods, finding them ex-pensive, and in no way a guarantee of absolute safety.

With the shortest of intervention delays and armed with an in-depth understanding of structu-ral behaviour in the complex structures that are bridges, OSMOS set up a structural monitoring system on four bridges to send this administra-tor’s structural portfolio on its way to preventive monitoring.

The right intel at the right time

Making decisions is an ever accelerating process. In order to help those in charge to make the right choices, OSMOS is fully committed to providing them with trustworthy, reliable information. How? By collecting and comparing data from each and every structure in a given area. This is the job of our analysis unit, who provides precise and conclusive reports.

Elected official - Project manager - Technical manager - Maintenance manager - Developer - Property manager - General foreman - Local community - Private

landowner - Operations manager - Site manager - Survey bureau - Insurer

Making budgetary leg-room By initiating generalised monitoring for the va-rious structures for which they are responsible, decision-makers can better establish priorities in scheduling interventions on a city scale, for instance, and be made aware of the state of all structures concerned, in real time. By doing away with emergency and opting for a globalised ma-nagement system, they afford themselves some budgetary flexibility and make it possible to continue investing in new projects.

Decision-makers with this preventive approach dispose of a centralised overview of their struc-tures’s strengths and weaknesses, enabling them to anticipate risks, and drastically reducing their maintenance costs.

An advantageous domino effectEfficiency and budgetary optimisation enable decision-makers to put saved time and money to good use for development projects. This is a ne-cessary move since structural health in buildings is synonymous with their continued use, conti-nued economic activity, efficiency of public facili-ties, durability in the face of external solicitations, cost reduction and safety for everyone involved.

DWINDLE YOUR DOUBTS... …AND YOUR EXPENDITURE

OSMOS enables decision-makers to personally consult all data collected on-site

Inventing a predictive systemOSMOS is convinced that quite soon, crisis management and risky situations will give way to the generalisation of a preventive process. Our analysis unit and Research & Develop-ment department are, to that end, developing knowledge relative to risk anticipation. En-gineers and mathematicians work hand in hand on the conception of predictive systems based on data collected from structures in order to im-prove our risk-anticipation capacities as well as the possibility of optimising budgets.

the Roads department is working alongside OSMOS, monitoring two concrete structures presenting extensive fissuring, but that appear stable. The point of the OSMOS solution is the fact that the moni-toring systems provided will endow us with conclusive information on our bridges’s durability, and useful data for their maintenance without having to opt for disadvantageous.

Our knowledge of structural health throughout our property port-folio turned out to be incomplete and was limiting our capacity to detect any structural trouble precociously, and consequently, com-missioning the work necessary to improve its durability. The pro-cess we have opted for aims to monitor the structure of our main, emblematic buildings. The global improvement of our knowledge of our patrimony’s structural health will constitute a decisive ar-gument in convincing our insurers of our efficient management of these kinds of risks.

OSMOS EVOLVING PROFESSIONSWe are nurturing an ambitious vision, that of a society in which safety and durable building should constitute the de facto standard. We aim to apply our technological innovation to different professional spheres, widening our company’s outlook. That is the OSMOS gamble.

Though the road to systematic preventive monitoringis still somewhat rocky, OSMOS has been including clients and partners in the achievement of our goals for over 15 years. Building Industry experts, study units, operators, architects and insurance professionals alike have been helping make this vision a reality, one project at a time, their very methods evolving in time with their job descriptions.

Innovation is not a dream, it is a group project, impulsed by the notion that it is possible to improve our society, and that every one of us can help in doing so. Innovation really comes into its own when actively beneficial to all parties involved.

93% of entrepreneurs in the building industry opt for innovations lin-ked to safety and durability.

1000 billion € could be saved by 2025, were digital technology to be fully deployed.

CONCEPTION

A catalyst for architectural ambition

Arnaud De PemilleHeritage Architect

To me, the monitoring system seems on-point for managing our Heritage, more so than other options on the market. It seems to me one of the most important precautionary measures there are.

Jean-Paul ViguierArchitect

The link between architectural au-dacity and technical workability is the key ; with OSMOS, an in depth knowledge of structural behaviour in buildings subjected to operational strain is essential in making auda-city secure.

INSURABILITY DURABILITYSECURITY

Architects must combine creativity with durability. Technological innovation en-ables them to improve building’s resilience to wear and the passing of time, while en-couraging architectural audacity.

The data collected by OSMOS technology constitutes a bank of reliable information that can be conclusive in all construction phases to check structural behaviour in innovative materials or methods, but also to help in the preservation of architectural heritage.

Jean TucellaHead of the decennial insu-rance department for SCOR

OSMOS, with their easy collecting of data from structural elements could help us monitor the progression of buildings as they are being erected. This would enable us to react more rapidly in case of any unexpected developments.

EVENTS ANTICIPATE DIAGNOSEECONOMISE

Our partners, professionals in fields such as construction, maintenance and decons-truction, have integrated OSMOS systems to their usual methods and tools. In doing so they have opted for damage anticipation and monitoring based on fine-tuned crite-ria so that they in turn can ensure smoo-th-running operations for their clients, guaranteeing safety for workers and neighbours alike.

Our partners in property and risk manage-ment have realised what opportunities OS-MOS services can provide in anticipating litigation and personalised support for lan-downer clients and facility operators. This is why these pro-innovation professionals are perpetually re-thinking their jobs in order to provide the most appropriate offers, always.

THE INSURANCE REVOLUTION

Conservative, insurers ?They are not! they have firmly set foot in this new era of data, put-ting it at the service of their policyholders! By teaming up with the leader in structural health, SMACL Assurances is proving once and for all insurer’s ability to reinvent themselves, forever looking towar-ds the future.

Risk anticipation is at the very heart of insurance. Though promises to do away with risk entirely would be impossible, the abi-lity to reduce it considerably by anticipating structural fragility is now a very revolutionary reality, made possible with data collected by OSMOS directly on structures themselves.

150 000 accidents declared as construction faults every year

170 000 accidents declared for decennial responsibility every year

300 accidents every year reach a total cost of over 150 000 euros

A partnership for future progress Ours is an ongoing revolution, with the signature, on december 11th 2015, or a partnership between OS-MOS and SMACL Assurances, the French leader in local community insurance. With this signature, Jean-Luc de Boissieu and Christian Ottavioli, respectively Chairman of the Administration Council and Director General of SMACL Assurances, intend to provide their corporations with innovative solutions for maintenance in public-fa-cilities.

Revolution pionneers Only a few months after having signed a partnership with MARSH, the world leader in insurance broking, OSMOS is continuing the adventure by pairing up with SMACL Assu-rances.

A Joint CommitmentOn the very next day after this momentous signature, OSMOS and the SMACL Assurances regional directors spent the afternoon discussing and working on OSMOS services and technology. Our respective teams are now absolutely easy to present this new service to their po-licyholders.

We will be able to fully ascertain the necessity for reparations or total refurbishment after an accident. It is also an extra tool with which to encourage our poli-cyholders to adopt a precautionary approach, ensuring the very best management of their property portfolios and budgets.

As leader in local community insurance, what new necessities have you iden-tified? What do your policyholders now expect from insurance?

The world of territorial collectivity is changing fast: with the territorial Reform, the multiplica-tion of collective operations, increasingly sophisticated facilities and the rise in intangible risks, both insurers and elected officials must continually adapt risk-management and insurance gua-rantees.

Do you refuse to insure public facilities in the event of an overly worrying state of health?

We are obliged to meet the need for insurance in territorial communities. That said, it can happen that SMACL Assurances should refuse to insure facilities or property whose condition is really too dilapidated or unsuited to their intended purpose.

How do you analyse structural risks?

Risk analyses take into account every factor that might be of consequence in the evaluation of said risk. The very existence of a risk-preventive policy is in itself a factor in evaluation. It would have a direct impact on the financial aspects of any community’s insurance program.

In the event of an accident, would OSMOS technology make the SMACL ex-perts’s task any easier?

When a building is seriously damaged after a fire or a climate-related event, OSMOS’s interven-tion along with our experts and the analysis performed by our Compensations Board will help determine how necessary (or not) it will be to commission repair work or total rebuilding.

Do your clients wish to commit to a precautionary procedure which would consist of anticipating damage and optimising maintenance budgets?

Ever since its creation, forty years ago, SMACL Assurances has always maintained that insurance cannot work without anticipation. Any solution enabling our policyholders to better manage risk and anticipate damage is logically conducive to a more rigorous and economical management of maintenance and insurance budgets.

We much appreciated the reactivity, rapi-dity and simplicity in their implementation, but also the quality of the collected data, which en-abled us to dispel our doubts over our bridges’ resiliency when subjected to their usual strain. Now all we need is to monitor them over time to perfect the analysis and make absolutely sure of their durability.
