News From Teakwood Village Main OfficeBy Lori Fliger___________________________________________________________________
Happy Independence Day! Wow, it’s July already. Half of a year done and I don’t know where it went. Do you ever feel like that? Oh well, lets get to the topic at hand. I normally review phone calls and visits from residents for topics of conver-
sation with everyone, but it seems like everything I have spoken with people about is a retread. Speeding, parking on lots and streets, lawn trimming, and of course overnight guests that don’t get registered, all stuff we have covered before. Quick recap on these things. 1. Speed limit is 10 MPH in Teakwood Village. Be careful - nobody wants an accident and I don’t want to have to do a violation notice for a lead foot. 2. You must park in your own carport. If you use someone else’s, we must have a letter from them saying it is alright for you to do so. 3. Make sure your trimming and edging are being done. Help out your neighbor with the name of a good service (Teakwood Village anyone?) so that nobody has to pay that violation and service fee. 4. Guests. Yes visitors are nice. If they sleep over (or are spending lots of time at your house) make sure to register them. We don’t want to throw anyone out if we can avoid it, but remember the neighbors as well as the Rules and Regulations. Let us know - then no

From Dick Grady
Thank you for all your good wishes! Your kindness is very much appreciated. God bless you all.
On behalf of Camille Boker’s family, we want to thank all of her friends and neighbors who attended her memorial or sent cards. It was greatly appreciated. Camille loved living in Teakwood and we are sure she will really be missed. She was a great friend.
In Memory of Jan It is with a grateful heart that I want to express my gratitude for the support that I received from your cards and your prayer for my family and me. Our Teakwood family is great in supporting those who need it at a time of stress. A simple thank you does not seem to be enough but I will offer it the same. I will carry in my heart the kindness of your remembrance and your prayers forever. Roland Lausier
From Tom Kittel I wish to thank everyone for the sympathy cards and all the kind thoughts that I received upon the loss of my dear brother.

I Am An AthleteBy Sue Dietz_____________________________________________________________________
Actually, I never was an athlete. Oh, I played fi eld hockey in physical education in high school in the ‘60s along with a bit of this and that. Most sports I
hated because I was never any good at them, especially I hated creative dance and found gymnastics dangerous and hurtful. Marty was and is the jock, better than good at everything he tries. He held a high jump record in high school for years. We like to be a part of our community and one way we show support is by attending high school athletics. Marty prefers girls’ softball. Having played beginning in Vietnam pitching and short stop, he played until the pitching/throwing arm wore out and then coached a year of junior varsity girls’ softball; he continues to enjoy taking in the game. Living in Florida, we had to be Bucs and Rays fans. (I liked the Bucs way back before I fi rst married, mostly because they seemed to be the youngest and had the cutest players. I always said someday they would win a Superbowl but never guessed it would take decades to do it.) We also go to minors’ games. So it was that we found ourselves attending the Threshers vv the Manatees at Bright House Stadium for a local chamber fundraiser on a beautiful Florida evening. Marty thought sitting on the third base line with a nice narrow bar and high chairs would be just the place for us this particular time at Bright House Field. Between Innings there are games for prizes and someone tosses tee-shirts to the crowd. The sunset was a bit of distraction to me (and thus for Marty as I did not want him to miss it). A pleasant evening cooled enough that I put on a sweater. A man started out from the bull pen to home base. He had tee-shirts. I wanted one. Naturally I told Marty to prepare to catch me one. This man threw the folded nearly ball sized shirts into the stands along third base line. Now, once upon a time a very long time ago I wanted to try to play softball. I went ready for the practice. However, my idea was that I could pick up balls off the ground as they slowly rolled to me. This was a church league women’s team. Turned out winning was quite important and these women were murderous with the ball. When the ball got remotely close to me, say a football fi eld’s length, I threw my arms into the air in front of my face and crouched low to the ground. And of course, I screamed until the coast was clear. I screamed loud! I did not make the team. I fi gured I saved myself from serious bodily harm.

Death Notice_____________________________________________________________________
Betty Thurkettle formerly of 550 Parakeet passed away on June 6, 2010. Cards may be sent to: Hugh Henderson
8111 Hamilton Mill Dr. Chattanooga, TN 37421
The man with the tee-shirts threw one into the section angled to us. Marty turned to see which yelling woman would grab the shirt and be able to hold onto it. The man with the tee-shirts saw me with my pink fuzzy sleeved arms in the air right before him 30 yards away in the stands right on the front row. He was on the green and not in the dirt. He reached into his pocket for a tee-shirt. My arms and hands are wait-ing. The row behind us is up and a few feet away. Marty was the only person nearby. Nobody else seems to want a tee-shirt. Oh, My G. Sailing through the air towards me but feet over my head is a baseball! I felt a tug on right shoulder, torn rotator cuff. It hurts. I bring my arms down to grab my shoulder. (My hands have major problems with feeling and gripping, etc.) You won’t believe it for I still don’t. In my bare left hand is a “real live baseball.” A game ball. I caught a ball! I hear the sarcasm behind and a ways to my left. “She didn’t even know she had it. Surprise, look what I got.” Marty turns around and is stunned, “Where did you get that?” It was a while later that night before I would allow Marty to see and touch my ball. I slept with it tucked under a pillow between us giving instructions that he not touch my ball without my permission. It sits on coffee table to tempt him, beside the remotes. My brother, the Yankee fan, has attended multitudes of games as has Marty. Neither has a genuine game ball. I do.
National Hot Dog Month. The National Hot Dog & Sausage Council estimates that Americans eat 7 billion hot dogs during the summer months (Memorial Day to Labor Day). On average, that’s 818 hot dogs per second. Go to www.hot-dog.org for more information.

Young at Heart NewsSubmitted by Barb Wautlet_____________________________________________________________________
Last month I gave you some informa-tion from Largo Middle School on how we as “Young at Heart” or you
as an individual, can help to support the educational needs of the children at this local middle school. Donating money, materials and manpower were some good ways to help. Here are some other ways we can enter into partnership with the school:
1. Speak to a class about your business or career choice.2. Purchase additional items from the class-room wish list.3. Display student work, notes, or pictures of their school events.4. Volunteer in a class.5. Sponsor fi eld trips.6. Participate in school fairs.7. Serve as a guest speaker during Career Day.8. Assist with printing or copying needs.
Last month we thanked the Teakwood volunteers who “participated in school fairs” by being a Science Fair Judge. I encourage you to think of all the wonderful things you have done with your children/grandchildren, and then think of the difference you could make in the life of a child at Largo Middle School. Next month I will give you information on the MSAP program. The Model School Achievement Program provides support to those children who have not achieved as well in school as their potential would indicate. Some times these are the students who become “high school drop outs.” All is well here. Lots of rain. The corn will be knee high by the 4th of July. I miss my donut on Tuesdays, walking in my neighborhood with my ipod, and I miss all of you. Blessings, Barb

President’s MessageBy Steve Gillis___________________________________________________________________
July has arrived and the warmth of summer is upon us. Summer is a time to be with friends and family away from Teakwood.
But our family and friends in Teakwood are carrying on without us. The activities are ongoing with summer residents meeting for coffees and going out to dinner on a regular basis. Card games, Wii bowling and dominoes are still happening at the clubhouse. Speaking of the clubhouse, I would like to thank John Houle for having extra stor-age cabinets built in the clubhouse as well as having the fl oors stripped and re-sealed. It will be bright and shiny when the snowbirds return in the fall.

Our Ontario friends have held their Annual Teak-wood Summer Reunion. I have not heard any details yet but I imagine a good time was had by all. The 4th of July get-together is being looked after this year by Mary and Guy Shreck. I am sure they will have something special planned for the day. Teakwood West Newspaper Pick-UpBy Ernie Comeau_____________________________________________________________________
During the summer, newspaper pick-up will be once a month - this month on July 22. Please have your papers at the end of your driveway by 8:30 a.m. Papers, including newspapers, catalogs, PHONE BOOKS, junk mail and offi ce paper
can be recycled. We CANNOT TAKE CARDBOARD OR PLASTIC/PAPER BAGS.
Teakwood West Neighborhood WatchBy Guy Shreck_____________________________________________________________________
Now that we’re into our summer months, let’s all keep an eye on our neighbors’ homes and a look-out for any suspicious activity in the park. If you
see anything that looks suspicious - any criminal activity, people trespassing, or an open or damaged door or win-dow call the Largo Police - 587-6730. With your help, we can deter crime in our neighborhood. Also, remember to lock your house and shed (even when you leave for a short while). Also your car, bicycle, etc. Also, have you noticed how many people have started speeding in the park? Just a reminder that the speed limit in the park is 10 MPH. We sure wouldn’t like someone to get hit because the speed limit was ignored.
Hurricane Season Information_____________________________________________________________________
Hurricane season is here and it is not too soon to prepare in case one of those nasty storms heads our way. You’ll fi nd information on the inside back cover of this newsletter.
Sports Cliché Week, July 11-17. This week honors all those sports clichés overused by fans, athletes, and announcers. “The best defense is a good offense . . . We’re taking it one game at a time . . . There’s no ‘I’ in TEAM . . . It’s gut-check time . . .”

Food Bank_____________________________________________________________________
Our contributions to the RCS Food Bank to date has reached 8562 pounds!!! Thank you to all the residents who remember to bring their non-perishable food items to the clubhouse. It is so badly needed by those in the community less
fortunate than most of us (see list on the board of items most needed). RCS also accepts food coupons - you can drop them in the slotted box in the clubhouse.
Lord, Help Me …___________________________________________________________________
Dottie Gladd read the following at one of our cof-fees. Thought everyone would like to ponder over the messages.
Lord, Thou knowest better than I know myself that I am growing older, and will some day be old. Keep me from getting talkative and particularly from the fatal habit of thinking I must say something on every subject on every occasion. Release me from craving to try to straighten out everybody’s affairs. Keep my mind free from the recital of endless details - give me wings to get to the point. I ask for grace enough to listen to the tales of others pains. Help me to en-dure them with patience. But seal my lips on my own aches and pains - they are increasing and my love of rehearsing them is becoming sweeter as the years go by. Teach me the glorious lesson that occasionally it is possible that I may be mistaken. Keep me reasonably sweet. I do not want to be a saint - some of them are so hard to live with - but a sour old person is one of the crowning works of the devil. Make me thoughtful, but not moody; helpful, but not bossy. With my vast store of wisdom, it seems a pity not to use it all - but thou knowest Lord, that I want a few friends at the end. Amen!

Stars of the WestBy Lorraine Sturtz___________________________________________________________________
Waking up in the late morning for Guy and Mary Shreck at 216 Redwood, is worlds away from their Penn-
sylvania childhood memories, especially for Guy. The sleepy eyes of a small Mennonite boy would open around 4:00 a.m. He would stumble outside to his farm duties, the fi rst of which was milking fi ve or more cows….by hand (pun intended). His four siblings were doing the same, and with 69 cows Dad must have been up much earlier! The milk was put in the Springhouse since there was no electricity or refrigeration. Guy said a barn was never built unless there was a spring. Then they would go to breakfast, which always was a feast to the eyes and the stomach. Mom prepared daily, 2 kinds of meat, potatoes and all the extras. Food was usually plentiful and a community tradition during celebra-tions or barn raisings. Picnic tables were built fi rst so the women could have a place to feed the volunteer Mennonite neighbors who came to work. Another memory is his Mom heating bricks to keep their feet warm during winter carriage rides. Guy attended a one-room schoolhouse until his 7th grade year when he went to public school. During his last year in high school he was allowed to take welding and mechanical classes at a technical school. By this time he was in love with a Protestant girl he soon married and they had 5 children. It took his Mennonite family quite awhile to accept this and was certainly not happy when he went through a divorce. Mary’s car broke down by the Fire Department of Sunbury, PA. She stepped inside the building to tell someone that she would be leaving the car there until the next day. Friendly volunteer fi re fi ghter and bartender Guy, offered his help. He fi xed the car for her the next day since he liked what he saw, and they started dating. Mary was divorced with three daughters and now was thinking of walking into the fl ames of love again. As a strong woman who had lost her Mom at an early age, nursed her dying father, was a breast cancer survivor, and once had her home and possessions wiped out by Hurricane Agnes……. took on that challenge of Guy, marriage and Mennonite in-laws. Yes Guy, challenges could go two ways. It was a long period of time before the family accepted things, but Guy’s Dad helped the process. The new family moved to Ocean City, New Jersey, where Mary fi rst worked as a waitress, but later retired from Verizon. Guy

always used his welding and mechanical skills to make a living and after seasonal vis-its to Mary’s favorite Aunt, they chose to retire in Florida. Aunt Ruth is 93 and Mary beams as she speaks of her. One last interesting memory Guy shared, was of a Mennonite relative who passed away and left a note telling of the location of his savings. It was not the nearest bank, but a milk can outside the door where they found many deposits of hundred dollar bills. They look forward to driving north to a granddaughter’s wedding and Mary will also attend her 50th high school reunion. They enjoy their Teakwood home with all the activities and friends. Guy is happy to be part of the important Neighborhood Watch and tries not to scare anyone when he roams around sometimes in the early A.M. look-ing for intruders. You just can’t take the country (habits) out of the boy, even if cars, motorcycles and scooters replace cows. Thanks Guy and Mary for a fun-fi lled visit that was soooo interesting and eye opening. See you soon!

The fi rst activity this month will be on July 4th - the day we celebrate our country’s independence. See write-up below for details. The dates for our coffees are July 6 and 20. Come join us and enjoy coffee and
donuts with friends and neighbors. For those of you who like to play games, we have Progressive Rummy on Sunday evening at 6:00 p.m., Dominoes on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., and Pinochle on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. Friday is Wii bowling day, and if you’d like to join in the fun, there is a sign up sheet on the bulletin board. We schedule a dinner or lunch out on the third Thursday of every month (let me know if there is a favorite restaurant you would like our group to visit). If you have other ideas of activities we can schedule, please let me know and we’ll see if we can get them started.

Tuesday of every month. We gather in the clubhouse at 9:00 a.m. for fellowship and donuts. This is a great way for you to become acquainted with your Teakwood West neighbors. There is no charge – residents submit donations throughout the year to help cover the costs. Bring your own coffee cup and if you want to take a chance on winning one of the Share the Wealth prizes, bring a dollar for three tickets. NOTE: During the summer we are asking for volunteers to host Coffee Hours. It in-volves setting up the tables, plugging in the coffee pots, picking up the donuts from Dottie VanZandt (those delicious donuts will be delivered to her at 6:15 in the morning!!! - thank you, thank you, Dottie for doing this from those of us who like to sleep in a little later). After coffee, just wipe down the tables and clean up the kitchen and you’ll be done. EASY!!!! Sherry Hartel has volunteered to host the coffees in July; Lorraine Sturtz in August, and Don and Kim Langworthy in September - we still a volunteer for the month of October. Call Buffy if you would like to serve as a host or hostess for one or more of these months.

violation notices, etc have to be done. We are very understanding here at the Teakwood Vil-lage Main Offi ce (727-584-8684). I know we have covered these things before. I just keep fi nding out that these items are being violated and want to gently remind you all instead of having to get tough. Have a great July and hopefully I will have a fun article for August.
T.M.H.A. President’s MessageBy Hugh Austin___________________________________________________________________
Hurricane Preparedness – What You Can Do Now
It’s not too early to start getting ready in case a hurricane comes this way. You can prepare by doing the following (don’t wait until a
hurricane watch is issued – do this now): Shelter: If we are ordered to evacuate – will you go to a friend’s or relative’s house, a hotel, or a shelter? If you have special medical needs, make sure you are registered with the Largo Fire Department or Pinellas County Emergency Management (464-3800). If you will be going to a shelter, have a folding chair, blanket, pillow, medications, special dietary needs, and books, puzzles, or games ready to go. Important Papers: Take your insurance, banking, and other important papers with you or store them at a secure location. Include an inventory of your possessions and pictures or a videotape of them for insurance purposes. Also a back-up of your computer fi les. Automobile: Keep your car’s gas tank topped off during the summer (gas pumps will not work if electricity goes out). Cash: Have a supply of cash – ATM’s will not work if electricity goes out. Medications: Fill prescriptions and remember to take your medications with you. Home: Before you leave, store all outside furniture, potted plants, bikes, etc. in sheds or inside your home. These will become missiles if left outside. Put awnings down and secure them. Turn off your water supply and electrical breakers to prevent potential damage. Contacts: Let friends and relatives know where you plan to stay and establish an out-of-state contact so everyone can check in after the storm. Emergency Kit: Pack a kit with clothing, fl ashlight, portable radio, batteries, toiletries, hand sanitizer, trash bags, fi rst aid items. Food and water: Take enough water and non-perishable (remember the non-electric can opener), as well as paper towels, paper plates, and utensils to last at least a week. Follow the advice of the Emergency Management Offi ce provided by radio or television stations regarding evacuations. DO NOT stay in your mobile home.
