Campfire ban startstoday, 12 noon

As of noon today, all campfires will beprohibited throughout the entire Kam-loops Fire Centre.

Since Monday, Wildfire ManagementBranch has responded to 26 wildfires, 19of which have been lightning-caused.

The ban is to help prevent human-caused wildfires and protect publicsafety. The fire danger rating is currently"high" throughout the Kamloops FireCentre, with scattered pockets of "ex-treme". With the current trend of warmand dry weather, wildfires in the regionhave displayed very aggressive behav-iour and required additional fire sup-pression resources. Human-causedwildfires can divert critical resources andcrews from responding to naturally oc-curring wildfires.

Wildfire Mgt Branch is urging thepublic to continue reporting any smokeor flames that they may see. You can re-port a wildfire by calling 1-800-663-5555or *5555 on your cellular phone.

Maka-Murray wildfireThe fire is believed to be caused by a

lightning strike on July 14, a rappel crew,airtankers and helicopters had initially re-sponded to it. But last evening, due to ag-gressive fire behaviour at the Maka-Murraywildfire, west of Murray Lake in the JulietCreek area, 5km west of the CoquihallaHwy, ground crews were withdrawn fromthe fire as a safety precaution.

The aggressive fire behaviour, up torank five, means a ‘rapidly spreadingwildfire with a organized flame frontcreeping up into the trees, candling, andwith a high flame height’, according towildfire officials.

At 6:30 last evening, TNRD issued anevacuation alert for residents living inthe vicinity of Murray Lake. There are 30-35 properties in the area.

Last evening, the fire was estimated at80 hectares, double the size it had beenreported earlier in the evening.

Semi fire on the CoqNorthbound lanes on the Coq, 10km

north of Merritt, were closed for more al-most 3 hours Monday evening, after asemi, burst into flames sometime after6pm. The driver of the rig was able to getout just before it burst into flames, andappeared to be okay. Water tenders fromthe Merritt Fire Department and Forestrywere on hand. An initial firetruck madeit to the scene but didn't have enoughwater to extinguish the blaze.
