The extraordinary biography of Robert J Oppenheimer,American Prometheus, re-counts the life of one of the worlds greatest scientists. As you may know, he was the inven-tor of the atom bomb, the man who unleashed atomic fission onto the world scene. Thebook documents not only Oppenheimers work, but also his life history and the psychology ofa man who opened up a new worldthe world of the atom.

Often, scientists are depicted as aloof, perhaps unconcerned with the vagaries of life. Op-penheimer definitely had every reason to be a proud manhe could speak eloquently on

any subject, he was an expert in his field, he knew how to manipulate people to get what hewanted (as well, he was a good political player), and he had a severe focus on how toachieve what he desired. When the first atomic bomb was detonated at the Trinity sight inLos Alamos, he knew that he had helped to unless a potentially deadly evil, but it was too late to stop theprogress. He quoted from one of his favorite books, Now I am become death, the destroyer of worlds.Did Oppenheimer think that he held such power as to be the determining factor of death itself, or did Op-penheimer realize he had made a mistake? History may never know, but he did campaign to make good useof atomic energy. The worlds governments, however, had wrested control and militaries won the day. Itwasnt until later that the atom would be tamed and used for peaceful purposes.

Today, the world still wars over the use of atomic energy, and for control of its use. Dare we assume theplace of determining death? Dare we presume that somehow the divine has placed those who have power todecide who can and who cannot have technology? These perennial questions will haunt humanity, no doubt,until we annihilate ourselves from the face of the earth. Humanity must find a place where determinations ofdeath or life are not based upon cultural, or political merit. Jesus offers us a way out of this insanity.On the 3rdSunday after the Epiphany, Jesus preaches his inaugural sermon in Lukes Gospel:The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,

because he has anointed meto bring good news to the poor.

He has sent me to proclaim release to the captivesand recovery of sight to the blind,

to let the oppressed go freeto proclaim the year of the Lords favor. The Gospel Acc. to Luke 4.18-19

Its radical and it doesnt sound very plausible. Why release captives? Wont they just reoffend? Who can

heal blind people? Freeing the oppressed sure seems too difficult for individuals and small communities!These are not just words Jesus made up; they are words from the prophet Isaiah 61.1-2. The prophet has avision of what life looks like when God is in charge of the world. It looks extremely different from today.What would it look like if humanity lived in the Spirit of Jesus sermon? Would it look like a community thatcared for all of its citizens, and worked to minister with even those who offend us?

I have seen glimpses of this Jesus culture in the recent preparation of a house for recently incarcer-ated individuals who are on their way back into society. This house is a safe space for such individuals, but ittakes our whole community to work together to help these individuals to succeed.Remember the story from Genesis, when Adam speaks to God, that the woman that you gave me mademe sin? Its the human way. When in troubled times, its easier to point a finger than to say, What have weas a society done to bring about this trouble.

FOOD AND PAPER PANTRYWe are always in need of personal care and hygiene items, paper products, and cleaning sup

plies, such as: laundry soap, dryer sheets, dish soap, paper towels, toilet paper, body soap,

deodorant, shampoo, condioner, shavers for men and women, shaving cream, lip balm,body loon, feminine hygiene products, etc. We also need the following food items: rice,

canned fruit, spaghe noodles, egg noodles, peanut buer, and cereal.

We will be partnering with Promedica Deance Regional Hospital in 2016 to provide emergency food pack

to those in need and being released from the hospital. More informaon on this program will be announced

at a later date. Thank you for your generous support!

Had Oppenheimers friends and colleagues listened to one another, perhapshistory could have come out differently. Who knows? What I do know: once Iwas poor, blind and oppressed, and Jesus brought salvation to me.

What a difference that has made in my lifemaybe it would do the samefor others?

Church Council Highlights

January 21, 2016

Cindy Wendell will ll the vacated council secretary posion for 2016 and 2017.

February 6 & 7 will be Souper Sunday with soup mixes being distributed to the members,

and a Soup and Salad lunch following worship on Sunday with a table decorang contest.

We paid for 30 loads of laundry on the January 16 Loads of Love at Spin City Laundromat.

New LED parking lot lights will be installed.

The youth will be spearheading a recycling program called A Bench for Caps collecng

plasc caps, lids, etc. to be made into a bench for the playground area.

The Innkeepers have created a bookmark with their informaon to be distributed to

schools and other agencies in Deance County.

Approved a $100 grant to each youth wanng to aend a LOMO camp this summer.

Next Council meeng will be moved to February 25.

SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS

VALENTINES DAY is truly loved by children. I recall during my teachingdays that many young children were especially excited to receive valentinesfrom each other. We will carry on that interest and make valentines for others

which will be passed out. Hope you are as excited as we are! 1 Peter 1:22 states Now that youhave purified your souls by your obedience to the truth so that you have genuine mutual love,love one another deeply from the heart.

Our children will plan some type of talent display for you this month on VALENTINES DAY.

Hope you like our surprise!

YOUTH NEWS

LOMO (Lutheran Outdoor Ministries in Ohio) offer Summer Camp &Year Round Retreats at Camp Mowana, Lutheran Memorial Camp, and

Camp Luther. Several discounts are available on the poster display. Be sure to check the in-

formation board. This camp opportunity would be great fun along with a chance to meet new

young people. Ask your parents they may remember and share some of their own experienc-

es. $100 grants are available for children wanting to attend. See Audrey Eis for more info.

We want to provide an inviting and hospitable environment,where everyone feels welcome!
