Liturgy of The Word
On a long winter evening we gather to proclaim the coming of the light. Isaiah announces that the people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. Paul reminds us that the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all. In the familiar account of Christ’s birth, the evening sky is bright with the heavenly host singing, “Glory to God in the highest.” Amid our broken world we proclaim that the Prince of peace is born among us. God comes to us in human flesh—in Christ’s body and blood—so that we may be bearers of divine light to all the world.
The Prelude Fantasia on Greensleeves Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958)
“Good King Wenceslas” Tune from Piae Cantiones arr. Reginald Jacques (1894-1969) Callista Sprague, soprano Evie Durant, alto
Good King Wenceslas looked out On the Feast of Stephen, When the snow lay round about, Deep, and crisp, and even: Brightly shone the moon that night, Though the frost was cruel, When a poor man came in sight, Gathering winter fuel. “Hither, page, and stand by me, If thou know’st it, telling, Yonder peasant, who is he? Where and what his dwelling?” “Sire, he lives a good league hence, Underneath the mountain, Right against the forest fence, By Saint Agnes’ fountain.” “Bring me flesh, and bring me wine, Bring me pine logs hither: Thou and I will see him dine, When we bear them thither.” Page a monarch, forth they went together; Through the rude wind’s wild lament And the bitter weather. “Sire, the night is darker now, And the wind blows stronger; Fails my heart, I know not how; I can go no longer.” “Mark my footsteps, good my page; Tread thou in them boldly: Thou shalt find the winter’s rage Freeze thy blood less coldly.” In his master’s steps he trod, Where the snow lay dinted; Heat was in the very sod Which the Saint had printed. Therefore, Christian men, be sure, Wealth or rank possessing, Ye who now will bless the poor, Shall yourselves find blessing. (John Mason Neale, 1818-1866)
“In the Bleak Mid-Winter” Harold Darke (1888-1976)Evie Durant, alto
In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan, earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone; snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow, in the bleak midwinter, long ago. Our God, heaven cannot hold him, nor earth sustain; heaven and earth shall flee away when he comes to reign: in the bleak midwinter a stable-place sufficed the Lord God incarnate, Jesus Christ. Enough for Him, whom cherubim Worship night and day, A breast full of milk, And a manger-full of hay. Enough for Him, whom angels, Fall down before, The ox and ass and camel, Which adore. What can I give him, poor as I am? If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb; if I were a wise man, I would do my part; yet what I can I give him—give my heart. (Christina Rossetti, 1831-1894)
“O magnum mysterium” Morten Lauridsen (b. 1943) Callista Sprague, soprano
O great mystery, and wondrous sacrament, that animals should see the new-born Lord, lying in their manger! Blessed is the Virgin whose womb was worthy to bear the Lord Jesus Christ. Alleluia! (Sung in Latin)
Before the service: TALK to God. During the service: LISTEN to God. After the service: TALK to one another!
Though this text describes winter weather in England rather than in Palestine, the poet is using familiar surroundings as a means of making the Nativity more immediate and personal. The tune name honors a Gloucestershire village near the composer’s birthplace of Cheltenham

The Solemn Proclamation of the Birth of Christ
Many ages from the time when God created the heavens and the earth, and then formed man and woman in God’s own image;long after the great flood, when God made the rainbow shine forth as a sign of the covenant;twenty-one centuries from the time the promise was given to Abraham and Sarah;thirteen centuries after Moses led the people of Israel out of Egypt and Miriam danced in freedom;eleven hundred years from the time of Ruth and the judges;one thousand years from the anointing of David as king;in fulfillment of the times and years and months and days discerned by the prophets;in the one hundred ninety-fourth Olympiad;the seven hundred fifty-second year from the foundation of the city of Rome;in the forty-second year of the reign of Octavian Augustus;while the whole world enjoyed a span of peace,Jesus Christ, eternal God and Son of the eternal Father, desiring to sanctify the world by his most merciful coming being conceived by the Holy Spirit and nine months of growth in the womb of his mother—now in our own times is the nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ, God made flesh.
The Gathering Hymn “O Come, All Ye Faithful” Adeste fideles
At the outset of the New Testamant, the Gospel of Matthew
opens with “An account of the
genealogy of Jesus the Messiah.” The
Roman Martyrology for Christmas Day goes much further,
containing a formal announcement of
the birth of Christ in the style of a
proclamation. It placed the birth of Christ into human
history yet avoids a literalistic accounting
of time.
The international status of this hymn
ranks it as one of the most widely
loved and sung of all the Christmas carols. Both the
Latin original and English versions have
four stanzas, with additional stanzas
added in 1794.
1 O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant, O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem; come, and behold him, born the King of angels;
O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord.
2 God from God, Light from Light eternal, lo! he abhors not the Virgin’s womb; only-begotten Son of God the Father; Refrain
3 Sing, choirs of angels, sing in exultation, sing, all ye citizens of heaven above; glory to God, glory in the highest;
Refrain
4 Yea, Lord, we greet thee, born this happy morning; Jesus, to thee be glory given; Word of the Father, now in flesh appearing;
Refrain

Collect of the DayPresider The Lord be with you.People And also with you.Presider Let us pray.O God, you have caused this holy night to shine with the brightness of the true Light: Grant that we, who have known the mystery of that Light on earth, may also enjoy him perfectly in heaven; where with you and the Holy Spirit he lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. The First Lesson: Isaiah 52:7-10
The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light;those who lived in a land of deep darkness— on them light has shined. You have multiplied the nation, you have increased its joy;they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as people exult when dividing plunder. For the yoke of their burden, and the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian.
This is one of the most popular French
carol tunes, and is associated with “Angels We Have
Heard on High” in our hymnal. The
text we sing tonight conforms to the
traditional Gloria in excelsis Deo, praising
the Triune God.
This poem promises deliverance from
Assyrian oppression, a hope based on the
birth of a royal child with a name full
of promise. While Judah’s king will
practice justice and righteousness, the real
basis for faith lies in God’s passion for the
people: The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do
this!
7
For all the boots of the tramping warriors and all the garments rolled in blood shall be burned as fuel for the fire. For a child has been born for us, a son given to us;authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is namedWonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His authority shall grow continually, and there shall be endless peacefor the throne of David and his kingdom. He will establish and uphold itwith justice and with righteousness from this time onward and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

Psalm 96 is a call to worship addressed to all of creation and all peoples. It extols God’s work of creation; God’s honor, majesty, might, and glory; and God’s righteous, faithful, and truthful rule. The praise of God is to be expressed not only by people but also by the heavens, the earth, the sea, rural landscapes, and trees.

The Second Lesson: Titus 2:11-14
For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all, training us to renounce impiety and worldly passions, and in the present age to live lives that are self-controlled, upright, and godly, while we wait for the blessed hope and the manifestation of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ. He it is who gave himself for us that he might redeem us from all iniquity and purify for himself a people of his own who are zealous for good deeds.

Sequence Hymn “O Little Town of Bethlehem” Forest Green
The Holy Gospel: Luke 2:1-14
Clergy The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.
In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. All went to their own towns to be registered. Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.
In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for see—I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying,
The appearance of God’s grace in Jesus
Christ brings salvation for all humanity.
Consequently, in the present we live wisely
and justly while also anticipating the hope
of our Savior’s final appearance.
Though he was famed during his lifetime
as a great preacher, no sermon Phillips
Brooks ever preached has been heard or
read by as many people as have sung his carol he wrote in
December 1868 (150 years ago this month)
for the Sunday School children of Holy
Trinity Episcopal Church in Philadel-
phia. Tonight, we sing this to the tradi-
tional English melody adapted by Ralph
Vaughan Williams.
God’s greatest gift comes as a baby in
a manger. Angels announce the “good
news of great joy” and proclaim God’s blessing
of peace.
1 O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie! Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by; yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting Light; the hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight.
2 For Christ is born of Mary; and gathered all above, while mortals sleep, the angels keep their watch of wondering love. O morning stars, together proclaim the holy birth! and praises sing to God the King, and peace to men on earth.
3 How silently, how silently, the wondrous gift is given! So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of his heaven. No ear may hear his coming, but in this world of sin, where meek souls will receive him, still the dear Christ enters in.
4 O holy Child of Bethlehem, descend to us, we pray; cast out our sin and enter in, be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell; O come to us, abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel!

The Nicene Creed
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen

1 Good Christian friends, rejoice with heart and soul and voice; give ye heed to what we say: Jesus Christ is born today; ox and ass before him bow, and he is in the manger now. Christ is born today!
2 Good Christian friends, rejoice with heart and soul and voice; now ye hear of endless bliss; Jesus Christ was born for this! He hath opened heaven’s door, and we are blest for evermore. Christ was born for this!
3 Good Christian friends, rejoice with heart and soul and voice; now ye need not fear the grave: Jesus Christ was born to save! Calls you one and calls you all to gain his everlasting hall. Christ was born to save!

Priest We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.
On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said,
“Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”
After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”
Therefore according to his command, O Father,
All We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory.
Priest And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.
We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with . . . and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.
By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever.
People Amen.Priest And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,
The Lord’s PrayerOur Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Words by Richard Wilbur (1921-2017)
Carol “Silent Night, Holy Night” Stille Nacht, Franz Gruber (1787-1863)
The doubled lines in each stanza of this reflection on Christ’s birth and death echo his saying (Luke 19:40) that creation will praise him if people are silent. This text by a former Poet Laureate of the United States is set to a lullaby-like tune specially composed for it.
The tradition that this carol’s tune was created for guitar accompaniment at its first singing on Christmas Eve 1818 (200 years ago tonight!) seems reliable, though a recent find shows that the text was about two years old.
1 Silent night, holy night, all is calm, all is bright round yon virgin mother and child. Holy infant, so tender and mild, sleep in heavenly peace.
2 Silent night, holy night, shepherds quake at the sight, glories stream from heaven afar, heavenly hosts sing alleluia; Christ, the Savior, is born!
3 Silent night, holy night, Son of God, love’s pure light radiant beams from thy holy face, with the dawn of redeeming grace, Jesus, Lord, at thy birth.

Like other material from oral traditions,
19th-century African American spirituals flourished without
being written down. Their refrains were
their most stable parts, and narrative
stanzas were often improvised to fit.
These Nativity stanzas attempt to recall that
tradition.
