Keynote Speaker:
Engineering and design ( booth 8)
Create an assistive item to help someone in the workforce
engineering competition (JETS)
-find a person in your community who needs help ex: Regina Walls stroke victim/artist
Need: She needed a cart that she could move using 1 hand
Created: a lightweight cart that can be moved using one hand and can hold a variety of objects
Award winning school: Jeffco Public Schools in Golden Colorado
Smartboard-use a tennis ball as their pointer
Clickers- immediate feedback
Elmo or Doc Camera
Teacher librarians-leaders for effective, ethical use of technology
ISTE digital citizenship
Digitally rich society, it’s about the kids and the skills they need, not about the technology
K- class of 2022 What technology will they face in their education??
They use BLACKBOARD in their district to participate in PLC’s
Keynote Speaker: Frans Johansson The Medici Effect
Promote and drive Innovation and Creativity
Integrating ideas from widely different disciplines, fields and industries leads to innovation.
Knowledge is becoming a commodity
15 days to take an idea on paper and put clothing on the shelves worldwide this used to take 6 months.
Facts are not as important because we can access knowledge instantly without remembering it.
Accessing knowledge and networking and innovation is the key.
How do you innovate
1) diversity drive innovation (Find connections between ideas that don’t seem related ideas closely
related are thought about, ideas thatt are far apart are not obvious until they are connected)
-turmite mounds cool and heat evenly use this idea to build office buildings that don’t require air
conditioning = EASTGATE 72 degrees farenheit
Creativity- all new ideas come from existing ideas
2) Innovative teams generate and execute more ideas and diverse teams generate far more ideas-
keep trying many ideas
Find inspiration from fields or cultures other than your own and dare to explore the connections
We assume that innovation means to be on the cutting edge and #1
Take your knowledge, wisdom and experience and colleagues and apply it to areas that you
don’t know and combine those ideas (Diversity)
Allow yourself to fail
Chef Marcus Samuelson throw out ideas of things people would never think to combine and
narrow it down from them Free and out there thought process leads to interesting
food his partner is more technical, he is creative they work together to create things that work
Kindergarten Technology Boot camp
Christ McBee from Wyoming several districts working together
Beebot robots
Wii
iChat
iPaq handhelds
Gather ideas on creating a simple technology program connecting
schools and districts that motivate students and raise student
achievement
Gain ideas on funding options
Learn how to use 5+ technologies
Have Fun
(Promethean board- putting numbers in order in 9 boxes
Measuring with a ruler on the promethean board
Lunch Count
Kid Pix on a smartboard (illustrating a story he read
with the teacher)
Work in small groups with 5 or 6
HANDHELDS:
Grants through Wyoming/Qwest $5000, $2500, $1000
She got a $1000 grant, her district supported her and provided the
rest of the $
Matching grant with Green River
$10,000 bought 48 handhelds (powerpoint to make flashcards letters,
numbers etc.)
Later put on books on tape.
Checking weather at Yahoo weather then graph it for math
Sight words and sentences- they wrote on their hand helds in note
Apple Mod Book- kids can write on this screen, but they
seemed to write on their handhelds.
Kids have taken great care of equipment
*iChat and Distance learning
(Mac) They have a pen pal they talk to about 1 time a
week for a few minutes. Teachers set up questions based on
the academics for their classroom
Went on iChat and talked to other classrooms (skype)
Once a month one teacher would teach an everyday counts
lesson to all groups via iChat (last Friday of the month)
They had to learn to talk clearly and loudly so other kids can
hear them on the other end
EducationCity.com
Starfall.com
Everyday Math online
*Podcasting
iPods & Garage band (record student voices retelling a story)
(Pair and share with older kids to show their podcasts)
BOOK No More Letter of the Week
Digital Cameras
Kids brought in teddy bears, they were to decide what
part of the day you wanted to take a picture of your teddy
bear doing something you do each day.
Class used the pictures to put in order to show their daily
schedule.
VIDEO GAME TECHNOLOGY
PS2 Dance Dance Revolution (fitness)
Wii Outdoor challenge game (coordination, brain base etc)
Wii Bowling (movement, subtraction 10 pins – hold up 10
fingers, put down # of fingers, # of pins and figure out how
many were left. This was the only way she taught subtraction
and they all could do it.)
Wii now has early childhood books they can read and turn
pages with the controller, then part way through they will
stop and have an activity to go with the story.
Also Smarty Pants software good for learning on Wii
Fitness Grant for Dance Dance Revolution
Foundation Grant for the Wii (music, movement etc. and got a
grant, all about academic benefit)
RESEARCH AND PILOTING
BEE BOTS
Bee Bots are small robots shaped like a bumblebee that
caqn be programmed very simply to move on a mat. BENEFIT:
high level of interest and engagement and problem solving
skills all paired with your Kindergarten Curriculum goals
Bee Bot lessons Careers Game Mat slip cards in pockets on the
mat, kids have to program the bee bot to get to the answer.
(problem solving paired with basic curriculum)
EX: Letter b for bear, have to get bee bot to get to the
picture of the bear.
You can make your own cards to use with bee bot, and there is
a curriculum book available to use with Bee Bot.
Roll Dice grid 1, 2, 3, 4 and a, b, c, d.
Roll a # dice and a letter dice and figure out which one you
need to answer.
Sight word cards, teacher says the word, kids have to
program him to get to the word.
(can create or purchase the mats, can be very inexpensive)
** presenter can get discounts on Bee Bot stuff up to 20%
Pro Bots car Type in degrees to turn at an angle
You can drop a marker in him and draw angles etc.

Freshi films
Making videos and video games
Process of film making (don’t need a broadcast quality video camera)
(LA 70 percent drop out rate in lowest performing schools)
Set up an after school program in film making
Gang activity dropped, drop out rates decreased and test scores went up.
*in 27 states and many other countries
Developed a process for teachers to use to make film, digital music and digital game
design & development (not computer programming) the logical thinking that goes into
a game
SOFTWARE
1) Pre-programmed game formats on software, you fill in the blanks
2) Blank slate- you have to program every ounce of that game (multi-media
fusion our of France) logic based statements, program takes the statements
and puts them into a game
Started at 8-12, then tried middle school, then piloted in an elementary and results
were great.
BENEFITS
Films can be inserted into background of games
Worked on line with children from other countries
Could not be political
Did a film on stealing the recipe on humus
80% of the kids involved in video game design and film making are boys *
this reaches many at risk kids
VIDEO GAMES
Educational value-
Series of graphs using logic statements if, then
Uses pictures on the graph to check for the logic statements
MULTIMEDIA FUSION 2
Chosen because it has a blank palette
Not a drag and drop or click program
For Freshi
1) Kids develop characters
2) Can draw/create their own ideas
3) Make the characters move around
4) Define how he moves
5) 14 week program when they are done they can re-program in less than 30
minutes
6) Teaches kids the actual progression that occurs when you play a game
7) They had to have a story to go along with this also
8) Credit screen when you win
9) Disguised learning, they don’t know how much they are actually learning
10) Can set up quizzes that they have to complete in order to complete the game
11) Incorporate curriculum
12) Kids own the copy right when they are done
File these copyrights and Library of Congress will send you a letter saying
that it is in the archives
