SBTJS JAM SETS DECEMBER 28

HELP YOUR BOARD!

Keep OKOM Alive!

Well! Toot Sweet Jazz Band was not only sweet but they were hot! A really good

music afternoon for us all. We enjoyed a transition march on and off the stage

when the Jammers replaced Toot Sweet – what fun! As 2014 closes we extend

special thanks to the dedicated people who keep our organization going. First

mention is to Cecelia Maloney who not only takes the minutes at our Board meetings,

but keeps the South Bay Beat on track. She’s always there when a need arises.

Sadly, Joy Stone who is in the midst of a move can no longer handle the raffle. She

has done an outstanding job and we hope her absence is temporary. Jack Ford is

the keeper of the cash box and tickets. He also does many extras, such as signage

for our various activities. George Trollman gets the Beat ready for mailing each

month. We’re grateful for sure. Jim Rouse is our sound man and hauls all the

equipment back and forth from our storage unit and the Elks. What a job! But Jim

is always there. Jim O’briant has done a great job furthering our youth program

and Kendric Smith keeps our website in perfection. Jim Harget keeps tabs on all

of our wonderful jammers and helps so very much with the hiring of our guest

bands. Behind the scenes with help and support are Sallie Morton, Mal Silva and

Kay McIntyre. Thanks to Jon Schermer who takes Jack Ford’s financial reports

and tends to the year-end financials with the IRS. What a great group of dedicated

folks! We have a special treat for our December meeting - you will want to be

here for HIGH SIERRA. Luncheon by the Elks will be spaghetti and meatballs,

caesar salad, garlic bread and a soft drink for $10.00. Join us for a GREAT 2014

finish.

By Carol Goedde

Wolverine Jazz Band from Boston, MA had such raves from

last year’s evaluations that they were asked back. The band

mixes tunes by famous composers such as Louis Armstrong,

Jelly Roll Morton, George Gershwin and Duke Ellington with

a wide selection of obscure gems from the Jazz Era.

The festival started on Thursday at 5:30 with a full house and

ended on Sunday around 5:15. Fun was had by all the dancers

and volunteers. The Lindy Hop Dance Party was held on

Friday and Saturday from 7:15-12:00 p.m. There must have

been 25+ young dance couples in attendance. The afterglow

party was held from 6;00-9:00 in A.J’s Restaurant hosted by

52nd Street band accompanied by many guests.

Your reporter, Carol Goedde, one of the twins, led many

umbrella parades, passing out umbrellas and boas that I had

brought along, danced, danced and danced all weekend. I

took several handicapped wheel chair young adults and other

handicapped adults to the dance floor to dance and experience

the fun of being on the dance floor. It was so wonderful to

see the smiles on their faces.

Arizona Classic Jazz Festival was celebrating their 25th Annual

event held Nov. 6-9th at the Crowne Plaza San Marcos Resort

in, Chandler AZ. Helen Daley and her staff do an excellent

of organizing and running the festival.

The bands who played that weekend were Cornet Chop Suey,

Dave Bennett Quartet and his Jerry Lee Lewis set, 52nd Street

from Mesa, AZ, High Sierra, Queen City from Denver CO,

Dan Reed Dixie Band Phoenix, AZ, Sun City Stomperz

Phoenix, AZ, Titan Hot Seven with Bill Allred on trombone,

Tom Rigney and Flambeau, Wally’s Warehouse Waifs

Michigan, Wildcats Jazz Tucson, AZ, Wolverine Jazz Band.

The All Stars sponsored by Bill Torrey were Nicki Parrott,

leader/bass; John Cocuzzi, vibes; Jacob Fischer, guitar; Tom

Fischer, reeds; Eddie Metz, Jr drums; Russ Phillips, trombone;

Randy Reinhart, cornet and Rosano Sportiello, piano. Cornet

Chop Suey from St. Louis, MO did a fantastic job as usual.

Brian Casserly, leader/trumpet led the group in Creole Blues,

Dipper Mouth Blues and many other favorites. Brett Stamps,

trombone, worked for Stan Kenton and Henry Mancini. The

George isn’t a member you

always notice but he has

a long background as a jazz fan

as well as other music interests.

He has been going to jazz

offerings since he was a youth in

San Francisco. His interest in

music extends to having played

the violin and being a member of

the Silicon Valley Accordion club

as well as being a proud promotor of traditional jazz. For

years when this society had a parade band, George

volunteered his flat bed truck seven or more times a year to

hold the six to eight musicians who played along the parade

route in many local cities with George as the driver. The band

and the accompanying brightly dressed strutting ladies with

decorated umbrellas were always a hit and often brought

cash awards to our treasury. George never asked a dime for

upkeep. And after that George served as our president for

the two years 2010 and 2011. He is currently the man who

picks up the the finished copies of the monthly Beat at the

printers and patiently does the tedious work of folding,

attaching labels and stamps and taking them to the Post Office

to send on the way to you. We are in need of more volunteers

like him.
