From the Pastor

Future after Saturday service coffee hours

The St Paul Lutheran Church Nurture Team would like to start having, after service on Saturdays, coffee

hours starting sometime in the late summer or early fall. To make it easier for any of our members to want

to sign up to coordinate one, we initially want to provide the needed items for an individual to run a coffee

hour. We would purchase the beverages, cookies, donuts etc., make sure these items are available in the

kitchen off the Fellowship Hall and the coffee hour coordinator for that Saturday would execute the coffee

hour.

To jump start funding these coffee hours, we just started accepting donations of any amount to be placed in

a coffee can currently placed on the marble ledge going into the Fellowship Hall.

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

It was June 1, 2015 when I began serving as Interim Pastor here at St. Paul Sandusky. In getting to

know Sandusky the message I often hear, spoken in various ways by the people of Sandusky is,

“Our best days are behind us.” Recently in a conversation about churches in Sandusky, one person

said “The comments I hear from people about churches in Sandusky are usually negative.” The

loss of jobs, business and industry has impacted this community and its churches to the point that

we are tired of hearing about it. Sandusky is a grieving community. Things that once were true are

no more and what we will become is still not clear to us.

So as you listen to conversations about Sandusky or its churches and the drum beat of negativity

prevails, ask a couple of simple questions like; What do we want Sandusky and our churches to be?

Where is that change taking place and how can I/we encourage it?

Something I’ve seen posted in several places lately seems appropriate “We can’t control the wind

but we can adjust our sails.”

Pastor Merlin Jacobs

Interim Pastor

COMING TOGETHER FOR GOOD

A recent gathering is spearheading an effort to create a network for assisting people with a hand up

rather than handouts. Those who gathered represented three churches, Care and Share, Catholic

Charities and the Salvation Army. Other interested churches and organizations are encouraged to

attend the next gathering which will be on Tuesday, July 20 at 10 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Bowling Green and Mansfield, Ohio created such networks that are making good use of the

resources they have to make a difference.

The Call Committee attended a workshop required by the synod on June 21. They have been

working diligently to complete the Ministry Sight Profile and all other requirements for the

call process. The next step is to interview candidates. Right now there are more vacancies

than there are Pastors to fill the positions. Please pray for the Call Committee as they continue

their work.

News from our Firelands Lutherans Active in Mission

formerly known as Sandusky Area Lutherans in Mission (SALM)

The Board met on Board June 20, 2016.

God’s Work. Our Hands. Several churches have plans under way for the weekend of September

11th.

Grace will provide a meal for the Castalia Police and Fire Depar tments and are awaiting a

response from Groton Township’s force. Zion, Sandusky will host a breakfast for the Sheriff’s

Department and the Perkins and Sandusky Police and Fire Departments. St. Peter, Norwalk is sending

cookie plates to Norwalk’s first responders and inviting them to a service. Zion, Huron is hosting an

ecumenical community prayer service for first responders followed by refreshments. They are also

continuing their laundry event by surprising those at the laundromat, paying for their laundry and

providing detergent. Light house repairs and yard work will also be completed for community members.

Huron has sought an action grant from Thrivent Financial to help cover costs.

Our JOY Time ministry continues to meet on the second Thursday of every month from 6-7:30 at St.

Paul’s, Sandusky. This is a fun Christian-based evening for adults with an intellectual or developmental

disability. Consider volunteering to help with our singing, crafts, or snacks.

THE 2016 FLAME GIVING GARDEN at St. John’s Lutheran Church is growing! The Giving

Garden Workers have been busy planting and nurturing the garden. A wide variety of vegetables will

allow us to donate food to area food pantries and other outlets. The other major undertaking this year is

the SWEET CORN! We have increased the amount of corn planted so that we can provide more to area

food outlets.

There are several ways to get involved again this year. First of all, pray for the garden. If you have an

interest and the time, get involved with the watering, weeding, picking and distribution. When the sweet

corn is ready we are going to need MANY PEOPLE to help us pick it and pack it. Or just stop by and

take a look at the garden and rest on one of the park benches.

For information about working in the garden, contact Jeff Justi at 419-503-0424 or Barry Gill

mailto:[email protected] and you will be added to the 2016 workers e-mail list. If you would like to be

on our sweet corn picking “on-call” e-mail list send your name and e-mail address to Barry and you will

be contacted when the corn is ready for picking.

The FLAMe Board wants to thank Paul Stengel, one of the original founders of the Community Garden.

Paul will be retiring from this ministry. Paul, thank you, for “planting the seed”. Thank you to Jeff Justi

who will be assuming Paul’s duties.

The Mission Summit, Moving Forward to Make Christ Known continues to plan for Life Tree

Café® and Dinner Church. Dinner Church will be meeting July 20th at 6pm at the State Room in

Sandusky State Theater. Contact Pastor Phil Gardner [email protected] for more information.

The Crisis Navigation Program Catholic Charities held a meeting at St. Paul on June 21st. This is a

referral and intensive case management program that is seeking to vet clients that churches are assisting

and possibly pooling benevolence funds. If your church was not in attendance, there is another meeting

scheduled at St. Paul’s at 10am on July 19th. Pastors or their representatives are encouraged to attend for

more information. Pastors Gardner and Jacobs can answer questions on this.

Report of the NWOS Assembly 2016

490 Registered Voting Members, nearly 100 volunteers, special guests and supporters. 411 banquet

attendees, and over 100 youth and young adults participated in the Assembly and Youth Gathering which

celebrated the 18 years of dedicated service of retiring Bishop Marcus Lohrmann while anticipating the

election of a new shepherd, Bishop-elect Daniel G. Beaudoin—St. John’s Stony Ridge. Keynote speaker

and Bible Study leader, Rev. Dr. Anna Madsen, and the sermons of Presiding Bishop Eaton and Bishop

Lohrmann reminded us all at the foot of the cross—the surprise of a lifetime and the Gospel in which we

live!

The Assembly passed a resolution affirming this synod’s financial and prayer support of the people living

through the Flint Water Crisis with contributions to be distributed appropriately through the South East

Michigan Synod.

Recording artists Rachel Kurtz and Agape brought joy, energy and inspiration as they joined in leading

worship and Assembly celebrations, and engaged NWOS young people throughout the Youth Gathering.

Some highlights of the Assembly were:

Offerings: ELCA World Hunger ($3,380), support for the Flint Water Crisis ($3,651), support for NWOS

Hunger Ministries and the Fund for Leaders ($2,494.81).

Elections:

Synod Council—Eastern Lay, Susan Lawrence—St. John’s Fremont; Central Clergy, Steve

Edmiston—St. Paul, Jenera; North Central Clergy, Mark Wentz—Grace, Elmore; Toledo

Area Clergy, Peter Bowmer—St. Paul’s, Toledo; Southwestern Lay, James Schwabero—St.

Luke’s, Lima; At-Large Lay, Diane Ninke—Zoar, Perrysburg; At-large Youth/Young

How You Can Help throughout the year…

Please continually raise prayers for Bishop-elect Beaudoin and his family, as well as Bishop

Lohrmann, the Lohrmann family, synod staff, Synod Council, the leaders and congregations of this

synod as we move through this transition together.

Consider a gift to the NW Ohio Synod annual appeal. This year’s offering will support hunger
